- Thomas Lang had the pleasure of experimenting with the brand new "Drum Workshop California Custom Shop Collectors Series Hybrid Shell Configurations". Yes, that's quite a mouthful! But more importantly, it's also quite an earful! Check out Thomas trying these new DW shells in a series of improvised solos over a loop. These drums are AMAZING! Thomas recorded and filmed the full testing process and a "Behind The Scenes"- video will be up soon!

First of all that is one beautiful sounding kit. Wow what a warm tone. Second: I actually think I prefer TL on this smaller set. His technique is so amazing and clean I feel sometimes it gets almost lost in the "stuff." When he's just sitting back and in a groove like here it's a wonderful thing.

To my ear, those maple hybrids have such a nice high end and punch, that I really really dig. But the mahogany has such a deep rich tone that would also be great! Sounds killer.
These kits can go anywhere. I think your noticing the higher end of the maple more because it states the tuning is higher. For cherry and mahogany the tuning is low.
Just when you think Thomas Lang can’t get any better after watching him on “Trigger” he drops this. Mind blown.

Very mature playing. Sweet groove! Underrated when it comes to just laying it down and being sensitive. All solid and tight. My favorite drum sound btw is the maple hybrid shell.
The Tominator is fast at everything even changing his clothes in a matter of seconds.
Christ thats beautiful sound and magnificent fluid precision playing. So damn smooth. Thomas is really a unique player. Very nice camera work, that wide angle perspective is great.

Seen you play makes me smile, it is not because it is funny, it is beyond entertainment, watching the technique taken to a level higher than any other level; I love these drums and your demo is spot on. When I used to play I was a weekend top40 warrior, always enjoyed what I could do and was blessed to be able to play drums; nothing beats beating and banging for a living! It was not after well into retirement (gigs are not the same like they were anymore anywhere) I got me that Purple Heart 7 piece set and $$$ in studio equipment to do many things I could not do when I was gigging; that is the last drums I will ever own; to me they are classic and sweet. It is a real shame not to be on stage with mine because seen your demo here makes me wish and dream I will again! - Call it drummer's nostalgia, keep them videos coming please and thank you!

All decent sounding kits! The Cherry hybrid has a more pronounced mid-range dipping a little into the lows, Mahogany hybrid was deeper and more low end, and the Maple hybrid possessed the most direct and punchy sound. Maple hybrid would be a great recording formula. That one gets my vote.

Maple hybrid all the way. Maple knows how to sing the others are just a little to low. Basically you can't hardly distinguish one tom from the other but those maples you can hear the distinct pitch of each tom. That's why I personally own maple kits and you can tune maples high, mid and low. The most versatile wood in my opinion✌

Last time I was this early I had never heard Thomas Lang and thought I was a halfway decent drummer.
We are always our worst critics. Don't underestimate your skills when comparing yourself to one of the best drummers ever born. Just do your own personal best, and always push yourself to that next level, practice your paradidles, all 40 rudiments, and polyrhythms, and you will amaze yourself and all of your friends and family. The main thing is to just love what you are doing.

I came for the drums but stayed for the drumming. The snare of the darker kit lacks body (it's the tuning, imo), but the drumming of Thomas Lang made me forget this. Love to watch him at work.

One of the main points I think many miss in TL's playing is the way he makes the kit sound. A lot of people sit in practice rooms trying to emulate his blistering chops. They may play to speed, but does it sound good? Thomas makes the kit sound good with quarter notes or sixty-fourths. Work on the later before adding the speed. You will get more gigs.
Cherry and maple were my favorite combos for my taste in sound. Maple 1st then cherry second with the purple core. I honestly prefer the maple sound because of its very extreme range in tuning. No mater if tuned high, medium or low maple always has that rainbow effect of even tones across each different diameter drum. Maple in my opinion is the most versatile of all woods that can be tuned to fit any genre of music with just one kit. That's accomplished by proper tuning, dampening applied in the right spots(prefer moongel) and experimenting with different heads, preference any Remos and it's always works perfectly for me. My kit is a Star Maple so with its high quality I can achieve any sound I need with those tips I gave with this one awesome kit👍

Not a purple heart fan but when added to maple it balanced it out, even tones high to low. Maple is simply the gold standard of woods if you want a kit you can tune high to low for any style of music. Maple, one kit gets the job done for all genre's of music. The most versatile wood of them all. I currently play a 7 piece Tama star Maple. It's the one kit you can bring to any gig for literally anything. Changing heads and specified dampening add many other variations of tone. Maple simply has no limits unlike other woods which are too specific in sound so it's limited in range unless that's what you want! I simply play too many styles so I need something to fit accordingly without owning 30 kits😆

Hallo Thomas! Welche Felle hast du da benutzt, 1 lagige? Das Maple projiziert sehr kräftig, das Mahagony klingt wunderschön dunkel und warm. Die Mahagony Snare war mir aber zu weich, liegt aber sicher am Tuning und Muffling, oder hast du alle gleich getuned und gedämpft? Lg
