2 monsters no question...Thomas: chops all around (impressive), Virgil: lets the music breath (ultra musical)...the track isn’t great tho. What a treat seeing them together!
Thomas Lang is a more-than-incredible drummer. But I think Virgil is the most advanced drummer on earth. He is less showy than Thomas Lang, but if you take time to understand what he does, you will get what I mean..
Thomas is a great straight player. After 2 or 3 phrases though he's just doing the same ideas but moving his arms to new places. Virgil on the other hand, so much more creativity and exploration going on...
VD is almost always in top form. Sounding poppish and soloing in 4/4 isn't just his thing. Been listening to him for years and as far as I could tell his style doesn't fit on tracks like this one. I'm positive he can say that for himself too :D
They need to turn up his mics. When Lang played his solo you could hear every little note, but that wasn't the case when Virgil played. Lang's snare sounded like a "box top" to quote my old high school band director. I'm not sure what it is but I just can't get fired up about Thomas Lang.
lang does the same thing all the time, hes very limited in my opinion. Donati has a few more tools in the box but in my opinion still a limited player, both sound quite poor in the musical setting, quite robotic. i usually listen to their stuff to see whats going on today as i have not heard them in a few years, but it all pretty much sounds exactly the same.
I first saw Virgil Donati play at a small gig at the Grainstore Tavern in Melbourne with Evripidou whatever his name was on bass. I stood there in absolute AWE as he continually blew me away with his drumming magnificence. That was about 25 years ago, and I presume he has only gotten better over the years... I spoke to him briefly after the gig and soon realized his ego was as great as his drumming talent - oh well. But still, fantastic musician.
You must be another Melbourne resident. A punter below made a comment that he would have been a fan of Dream Theatre, who I saw a few years back, had Lang got the gig. Well that's selling Mangini short surely. Therefor on the day, MM got the gig and the two lads in this video didn't. Simple. But there's more to the team and me reading your comments suggests ego lost Virgil the gig but maybe nerves and fitting in and overtaking the other 3 lads in DT may have caused Lang to miss out. Oh well, all of them are the best but sometimes technicals alone don't bring the 'feel' to the group.
I think this video showcases the reason Virgil is so much more mature than the majority of "power drummers" out there. He introduces Dynamics and phrasing elements that are clearly very foreign concepts to most listeners and players. Thomas is milking the 32nd note for all it's worth, but he plays with the feel of a caveman. Virgil steps outside of the confines of these very traditional, showy feels that frankly just get boring. Everything Thomas played sounds like any shed session video you can find on RUclips. In other words, Thomas is a drummer and Virgil is a musician, and at the end of the day I know which one I prefer.
Both amazing drummers, but I find Virgil's solo to be more interesting. With Thomas solo, it was fairly easy to figure out what he was doing. Virgil's solo, however, seemed more creative and dynamic in my opinion. Still two of my favorite drummers though.
I like Thomas's heavier foot. Not that they both can't do the precise thing they want to do at anytime of course. Virgil is an alien it's crazy, completely his own next level thing going on.
You're crazy as h3ll if you think even for a nano second that Virgils fills were even close to the complexity of Langs. You must definitely not be a drummer. I've played my whole life and play a lot of clinics and seen these guys live in person. You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Lang made Virgil look like a beginner. Fact.
Saying anything negative about either one of these virtuoso players is crazy. Even if you have a favorite they are both worthy of the greatest respect.

both badasses for sure. no need to compare them. appreciate them for their skill is all.
Amazing. 2 superb drummers having fun.
Virg is the best who ever lived. Noone is even close
I dare anyone to find more fluidity or effortlessness than what Thomas has. He makes everyone else look like they are struggling and he is just killing it laughing.
Dave Weckl? :) Dave's playing is like a water running and you don't get more fluid than that. But in all honesty, you can't compare musicians like that. :)
@@RandomlyDrumming Weckl, Colaiuta, Donati, so many more before Lang. Lang's sloppy and boring compared to these three for example. He's a legend but he can't touch the real GREATS
Colaiuta, hands down.
It appeared to me they were having a lot of fun doing what they did. That's really what it's all about guys. Think about it. Why did we start playing drums in the first place. We saw our heroes and it looked like they were having so much fun that we picked up a pair of sticks and the rest is history!!Always share what you have learned. Keep your chops up and never stop playing. Have fun!!
💯%
Thomas is in a different galaxy than everyone else.
Just had to watch this again! Just no words!😳😁👏👏👏👏👏
These monsters killed it!!!!
I think it's fair to say the "V" is on another level.
So true!!!!
2 Stars ... Shining in different ways ... but every one with it´s own unique way!!!
LoVe 4 u´s 🌈
2 monsters no question...Thomas: chops all around (impressive), Virgil: lets the music breath (ultra musical)...the track isn’t great tho.
What a treat seeing them together!
Thomas is just on a level no one can touch
Thomas Lang is a more-than-incredible drummer.
But I think Virgil is the most advanced drummer on earth.
He is less showy than Thomas Lang, but if you take time to understand what he does, you will get what I mean..
There are actually many drummers that can touch him or are even better than him.
Not a Dream Theatre fan, but would’ve become an instant one, had Thomas joined. I still find it hard to believe that he didn’t pass the audition.
This is awesome!! Love both these guys! Monster players
That was unreal guys.
Just great .
Loved it.
I love how Lang is total showbiz and Donati is all business. Not a single smile😂
Lang is outta this world...
Virgil and Thomas worldclass
Thomas is a great straight player. After 2 or 3 phrases though he's just doing the same ideas but moving his arms to new places. Virgil on the other hand, so much more creativity and exploration going on...
Objectively wrong for Thomas.
VD is almost always in top form. Sounding poppish and soloing in 4/4 isn't just his thing. Been listening to him for years and as far as I could tell his style doesn't fit on tracks like this one. I'm positive he can say that for himself too :D
Tim Dioko 100% agree bro :)
I would love to be a limited player like either of these two icons.
We all would...
thomas killed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing watching one of the 2 best drummers
My favorite drummer with my #8. What a treat.
That track is killer!!
Donati.....master of the universe
Awesome duet !!!
I want to live in this room forever.
26 Dr Who Doctors disliked this video because these guys are the true time lords.
Virgil is the best ever !
Thomas is KING
Thomas Lang is a freakin powerhouse
Left eye - virgil
Right eye - Thomas 😎
Both amazing drummers, but I find Virgil's solo to be more interesting. With Thomas solo, it was fairly easy to figure out what he was doing. Virgil's solo, however, seemed more creative and dynamic in my opinion. Still two of my favorite drummers though.
Virgil's vocabulary is pretty much completely unique to him.
easy to figure out hahaha,,, ya ook then,,
I like Thomas's heavier foot.
Fact.
@@rbuk2112 exactly, anybody that says that doesn't have a clue what they're talking about
Oh the madness! The Sickness!
Thomas the best to me, very powerful and very clean fill in
Speechless, Abosolutley awesome!!
Only reverence for these two incredible drummers!
Saying anything negative about either one of these virtuoso players is crazy. Even if you have a favorite they are both worthy of the greatest respect.
World drumming headquarters people !! Wow with extra cap W.
disco has made a comeback...drum disco virtioso
