I studied medicine and fought with others about why they continued to prescribe folic acid to people with mutations like myself. What you're stating now is exactly what I fought about for years "if we have this mutation it means we cannot metabolize it, hence it will result like poison for us". I didn't take any because of that, despite the fact that I trusted them years before., I did take it, and the outcome was as expected: I felt awful. People start taking loads of worthless and deadly medicines as soon as they find out they have this mutation, and they also push their offspring to take them., which, In my opinion, it's a disaster. Unfortunately, metafolate did not work for me either.

I lost 7 years of my life due to no one looking into my MTHFR mutations or piecing this puzzle together. I had aching joints, severe exhaustion, depression and insane anxiety, speech loss and dysphasia, major b12, vit d and testosterone deficiencies, liver distress due to no glutathione production, led to ferritin over 1500 and a blown thyroid! I was so so so so sick. I started addressing each issue individually, took all matters in my own hand and figured it out. Literally 2-3 days after taking high methylated vitamins almost all symptoms started to go away almost immediately. I still require synthetic thyroid meds and testosterone, I avoid any processed food and I have honestly cried everyday for having the opportunity to have a second chance at life. I'm 46, I was basically a weak useless man and unable to be a real father. I am now back, working out daily, eating well and I wake up everyday with so much gratitude. Keep fighting and take your health into your own control along with a team if you can find them. My love and support to anyone who has endured chronic health and pain! There's obscure research dating back almost 20 years that connect folic acid (not folate) to regeneration of the hair cells responsible for hearing. This connection was triggered by research on the way birds, especially loud birds like parrots, are repeatedly destroying their hair cells due to their loud noises and then regenerating the hairs. A plausible folic acid role was noted. A 2007 study of a small set of elderly subjects found that folic acid may play a role in reducing or even reversing hearing loss due to aging.
I've been taking 20mg (yes, 20,000mcg!) folic acid daily for more than three years, and at age 72, am the only one of my siblings without the need of a hearing aid. (My hearing tests show only a modest drop of the higher frequencies, less than what is normally associated with aging.) A more recent study suggested that 5mg or more daily may increase the incidence of colon cancer; all my colonoscopic exams have remained polyps-free. This study did not take into consideration other supplementation that may be colon-protective; there needs to be more studies that take a more wholistic approach to assessing nutrient supplementation, as no single nutrient is able to function on its own.
As the folic acid seems to be of benefit and there are no apparent side effects, I'm making the presumption that my physiology has figured out how to use it efficiently and effectively.
BTW, I take a Chinese OTC brand of folic acid; 100 5mg tablets costs 9. That's 9 yuan, or about USD $1.30!

    • @jamesoommen

@@jamesoommen I just summarized; my family genes suggest I'll be actively wearing out my pants well into my 90s (my father died at age 91 from an acute case of job hunting!). I am comparing myself to my similarly aged siblings and cousins, all of whom depend on hearing aids for their everyday activities. I happen to be a composer, and as I lack the mastery that was possessed by Mozart and Beethoven, I consider it necessary to do what I can to preserve my hearing. With that in mind, I've also been following Berg's "healthy" keto diet for a couple of years, so its not just the folic acid; as previously suggested, everything ultimately works together. 😉

High level of homoysteine has been shown to be "associated" with higher risk of cvd, but it has been suggested that it's the result of cvd events not the cause. Taking B12 is suppose to lower homocysteine level and improve cvd risk, but one study showed homocysteine was lowered but not cvd risk. So, it's like blaming cholesterols for cvd when other inflammatory factors, like sugar, are the real culprit.

So when I was pregnant I decided to eat all my vitamin needs instead of taking a pregnancy vitamin pill. I ate loads of avocados, lentils, octopus, meat and vegetables. I tried to find foods high in folate for the first three months and ate extra virgin olive oil every day. Now I’m trying for another and am a lot older and feel nervous about doing that again because of the pressure to take folic acid, even though my child has turned out healthier and better developed than anyone I know. My question then is, is eating folate rich foods and high iron foods enough when pregnant instead of taking food acid? I did start taking a folate supplement but stopped as unsure it was the right thing to do because started reading you should eat folate AND take folic acid for pregnancy… so now I’m confused!!

    Hello Dr. Berg
I found these articles you shared very interesting, however, none of them correlate autism with the use of folic acid. When you make an impactful and frightening comment that the use of folic acid would increase the risk of autism by 17 times, you should, at the very least, also provide robust evidence to justify such a statement.
Furthermore, you talk about folic acid as if only it were synthetic. Methyl folate (Levomefolate calcium salt and Levomefolate magnesium salt) is as synthetic as folic acid. Both are produced by the same pharmaceutical industry…

Telling people to supplement folic acid or folate is quite a unresponsable claim.
Sure, it is better to take folate then folic acid, because folic acid enters the body nearly unregulated.
But even folates themself are a riskfactor in terms of cancer and other deseases.
Thats why anti-folate get used in therapy of those.
That aside, eat healthy, the body than takes the necessary amount folate needed.

I've been taking 3000mg of grass fed beef liver for the past 3 or 4 months and my lab results show my b12 at 86 and the PA said my folate is real low but can't find it in the lab work. How can that be? Plus I take a b complex with Myth b12 added which is about 66mcg daily. What up? I also take HCL and acv with my meals. I have more BM's a day than I've ever had in my whole life. Could the lab have messed up my blood? I mean I feel tired and dizzy but I deal with stress and ear stuff but I also have teeth that need to come out bc they are decayed that could be causing the ear stuff and dizziness. Labs also show my white blood cells are really low. Haven't been sick with even a cold in almost 6 years then suddenly the ear stuff started about 2 months ago. Doesn't make sense.
