  • "Pleyel's Hymn (First)" (Sacred Harp 143) in Cades Cove Primitive Baptist Church, Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
    While Thee I seek, protecting Pow'r,
    Be my vain wishes stilled,
    And may this consecrated hour
    With better hopes be filled.
    Thy love the pow'r of thought bestowed,
    To Thee my thoughts would soar;
    Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed,
    That mercy I adore.
    In each event of life, how clear
    Thy ruling hand I see!
    Each blessing to my soul more dear,
    Because conferred by Thee.
    In ev'ry joy that crowns my days,
    In ev'ry pain I bear,
    My heart shall find delight in praise,
    Or seek relief in prayer.
    When gladness wings my favored hour,
    Thy love my thoughts shall fill;
    Resigned when storms of sorrow lower,
    My soul shall meet Thy will.
    My lifted eye, without a tear,
    The gathering storm shall see:
    My steadfast heart shall know no fear;
    That heart shall rest on Thee.

    Both Pleyel’s Hymn are great I think. Such great melodies make them easier to sing.

    Acappella singing, whether traditional four part as we sing at the Beachy Mennonite church I attend, or in sacred harp fashion as these folks do, brings a power to the message of the song that instrument-accompanied music cannot match. Well done, Cades Cove singers!

    Beautifully sung, but I'd like to point out that the word "lower" in the third verse is pronounced to rhyme with "power." It's a mostly obsolete word. It means, "to frown, to appear threatening," not "to get closer to the ground." One of my pet peeves in Sacred Harp singing is that everyone mispronounces that word.

    I love these folks! I wondered, is this the same group each time they record at this church or is it "whosoever will" come? Husband and I were at this church a few weeks ago and he doesn't sing...I sing Sacred Harp (which is why I love this group so much!) and I wanted someone to harmonize with me but no one else sang. :( Anyway, further info on this group please??

    I seem to recall a different tune called "Pleyel's Hymn" to the words of "Children of the Heavenly King", in the hymnbook "Great Songs of the Church". Or maybe my memory is at fault?

      You are recalling Pleyel's Hymn (Second). Number 523 in the Sacred Harp. The words are different than Children of the Heavenly King. The same melody is also used to set a masonic funeral text.
