    Gives me chills every time I listen. I remember this music when I was five and six and seven years old with my stepdad‘s father in backwoods Choctaw county, Alabama. I could’ve sworn I heard God sing back then
    When that old Country church choir sang sacred Harp nearer my God to thee.

    This is my new love in singing. I'm 74 years old, in Connecticut, and in September, I will drive 50 miles to find sacred Harp singing. I have been in church choirs since 4th grade, and I need Thee every hour. God has blessed me with a voice to sing. May it be a praise to Him always.

    Every time I return to this I ball like a baby. The spirit moves on her so much and the way her voice rises above the entire chorus is not humanly possible. One of my goals in life is to witness this in person. Praise God.

    She sings her heart out here and any time she sings! I love this woman. When I was just a little girl she saved my life. I now call her mom! I'm so proud of her voice but more proud of her heart and the many lives she continues to touch! I'm thankful for the countless nights she calmed my heart and sang me to sleep!

    I'm Italian, in love with American culture. Didn't know this was a hymn, heard it the 1st time at the end of "Titanic", when the 3rd class passengers understand they have no hope of making it and turn back to their cabins to die holding their loved ones. The song had always break my heart and just recently did I found out it's a beautiful Christian hymn. Thinking this music was originally made for the "uneducated" ones, the poor, the ones who sometimes couldn't even read, really reveals to me the power of Christ. I'm an Italian Roman Catholic Sedevacantist woman, I'd take pride to be part of the "uneducated" ppl that can proudly carry their heart, their faith and their heads high towards God.

      The one thing I hate is "trained" voices trying to sing Sacred Harp. They do it all wrong. You must just open your throat and sing.

    • @PDXVoiceTeacher
      @PDXVoiceTeacher 4 года назад +3

      @@peteeiseman-renyard162 you just described the fundamentals of Bel-Canto technique. The artificial "trained" sound comes from singers trying to use muscle rather than air when they ascend through their scale. Usually results in a warble developing as they age.
      Some sacred harp singers will also use muscle to lock their straight tones rather than trusting air. People like to overthink singing.

    At 1:35 -
    Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
    E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
    still all my song shall be,
    nearer, my God, to thee;
    nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
    Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
    darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
    yet in my dreams I'd be
    nearer, my God, to thee;
    nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
    Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
    sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly,
    still all my song shall be,
    nearer, my God, to thee;
    nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

    This lesson is all about singing the song--not rushing thru it to reach a song count. Yes, there is something to attempting to let everyone lead, but I think sometimes we lose sight of the idea that we're primarily there to sing. So I love the unhurried pace of this lesson. She gives this song its proper time and the group fully supports her in this effort.

    This one touched me deeply and made me look up from what I was doing and I was captivated. I am so wanting to get this going in my neighborhood. And I think it could do wonders at the Union Gospel Mission too.

    Beautiful! More Sacred Harp Singing, something to "experience" live! It's like you are "in" the instrument, words or even the videos can't describe the feeling of actually being there!

    I love playing this on the soft stops on the organ over and over just singing to God in my head and praising him.

    Beautiful rendition. The other examples I've heard of this type of singing are usually quite fast-paced with short notes. This is the first I've heard one this slow with long notes.

    This may be mentioned already, but the tune dates from 1856 and is "Bethany" by Lowell Mason (once the organist at Ind Pres Church of Savannah, GA where I attend) and the words of the hymn are by Sarah Flower Adams, written in 1841. Can't beat the 1800s for great enduring music!

      rhinely850 They really make the shaped note version work! It's a bit ironic, since Mason considered this earlier American tradition primitive and pushed for more European style church music as exemplified by this very tune.
