  • UPDATE:
    Listen to a new recording by this group of friends at memphisharmony...
    "O Jesus, My Savior" (old melody, arranged) from the Primitive Baptist Hymnal (#94) in Cades Cove Primitive Baptist Church, Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
    O Jesus, my Savior, I know thou art mine,
    For thee all the pleasures of sin I resign;
    Of objects most pleasing, I love thee the best,
    Without thee I'm wretched, but with thee I'm blest.
    The Spirit first taught me to know I was blind,
    Then taught me the way of salvation to find;
    And when I was sinking in gloomy despair,
    Thy mercy relieved me, and bid me not fear.
    In vain I attempt to describe what I feel,
    The language of mortals or angels would fail;
    My Jesus is precious, my soul's in a flame,
    I'm raised to a rapture while praising his name.
    I find him in singing, I find him in prayer,
    In sweet meditation he always is near;
    My constant companion, O may we ne'er part!
    All glory to Jesus, he dwells in my heart.
    I love thee, my Savior, I love thee, my Lord,
    I love thy dear people, thy ways, and thy word;
    With tender emotion I love sinners too,
    Since Jesus has died to redeem them from woe.
    My Jesus is precious--I cannot forbear,
    Though sinners despise me, his love to declare;
    His love overwhelms me; had I wings I'd fly
    To praise him in mansions prepared in the sky.
    Then millions of ages my soul would employ
    In praising my Jesus, my love and my joy
    Without interruption, when all the glad throng
    With pleasures unceasing unite in the song.

    Hi, Sheila! We're singing out of the Primitive Baptist Hymnal, 2nd edition. The tune is an harmonized arrangement of a very old melody.

  • @monologtube

    The basic melody (of unknown origin) was heard by two separate composers (slightly differently) and harmonized/arranged resulting in both the tune above and also "Symyadda."

    Finally, several years later, I've found the tune they're singing here. It's called "Symyadda", and it's in the Shenandoah Harmony. Interesting it just says "Sand Mountain traditional, arranged 1998", but this doesn't look like the ShH they are using. Maybe it's in the Christian Harmony also. The lyrics they are singing are most popularly associated with the song "Imandra", which is also in the SsH, but I prefer this version better.

      John Bayer (the much-liked Dayton, OH singer who just died a couple months ago) also arranged this tune in two parts in Shenandoah Harmony. There the tune name is "Symyadda." That's not a traditional name, though, but one that John made up for it out of the names of a couple of friends of his. Don't know the page number off the top of my head, but it also sets the tune "O Jesus, my savior," so should be easy to find in the indices. I believe the same arrangement is also printed in the new green Missouri Harmony.
