the solenoid on the bowl is to immediately stop the fuel from going into the intake during engine shut down to help prevent back fires in the exhaust, thats why some older engines backfired once you turned the ignition off is because the momentum of the engine spinning is still drawing gas through the carb and pumping the gas vapors into the hot exhaust where it ignites and causes a backfire
The carb solenoid is to stop the float and bowl from overfilling. It also prevents back firing when shutting down since its a positive fuel shutoff. It is common on all newer large 4 stroke, lawn mowers, snow blower engines ETC.
The "solenoid" is an anti-backfire switch. When I worked at a small engine shop, we would just snip the plunged off with wire cutters and it worked fine!
Pull it out of the bowl, cut the tip off that damn thing, reinstall. and install a manual fuel shut off valve if you are worried about flooding when not in operation.
+MrTheHillfolk that's what I do. However if your carburetor is working properly it shouldn't flood. I use. Shut off so that the gas doesn't varnish in the bowl
+TheKurtTribute yea ill run it a little after turning the valve off too, usually. Should is the key word, I never trust "should",I been doin it too long and the "gettin lucky" times are thinning out. It's a good idea to have a shutoff anyways , if you transport it because float bounce can allow flooding during the journey.
Really no need to replace the solenoid in my experience. The biggest reason for the fuel cutoff is to prevent an after-fire when you turn off the ignition at WOT. If you let it idle 15-30 seconds before shutting it down you don't have to worry about it.(or don't worry about it and enjoy watching the neighbors jump)
Also not true. It just prevents backfiring once spark is cut off. When spark is cut off the engine is still rotating and pulling fuel, this unburnt fuel is pumped into the exhaust and can explode the stock muffler. That is all the solenoid does.
For a future project or something, y'all should definitely do some sort of homemade Goped-like thing with a weed-wacker engine or anything like that laying around (especially if you can fabricatean expansion chamber pipe for it, just to make it more dangerous AND fun!)
put a single or v-twin diesel lawn mower engine on the red offroad go kart, i have a v-twin diesel on my offroad go kart with which has 25 HP and 50 pound feet of torque with the governor removed it tops out over 50 mph!
I had the same issue with the fuel inlet solenoid on my lawn tractor and I did exactly what you guys did. I bypassed it because it went open circuit. I removed the rubber seal then cut the wire then reinstalled it and my tractors run fine ever since.
Hey guys! Great to see the black widow back around. If your going to replace carburetors on these motors for any performance oriented purpose, ditch the butterfly type carbs. Mikuni slide carburetors (and any other slide type carb) is the way to go. Dynamic fuel delivery, adjustable on the spot, and far more aerodynamic. I personally like vacuum slide (CV) carburetors.
I'm a big fan of your channel and have been watchin for a few years. Coming back to this video after watching more of this months vids, well all I can say is that you look better now that you've gone through puberty. lol
Man I really enjoy this channel, congrats on 200 k too guys, really well deserved,, is there such thing as a supercharger for go karts? If so, drop one on this kart to make it super duper fast
You guys should start putting fuel additives in all your go-karts so the fuel wont go stale, or gunk up i use it on my go karts and i had one sit for almost a year with gas that had ethanol in it and when i went to start it it fired right up.
I believe that I've said this before but what's you're opinion on a twin turbo V-twin? I know you guys have tons of projects and real life stuff but it might be a worlds first! I know that you're boosting the 420cc with one cylinder so wouldn't you be able to do twins on a V-twin? Just an idea I've been thinking about, cool video though keep it up!
It's an awesome idea that we've thought about, but ultimately it would be way too expensive. Two turbos, an EFI kit (modified to fit a V twin/twin turbo setup), and the V twin would be at least $2,000 before the go kart it would go in.
+CarsandCameras with a 200K+ sub channel and merch shouldn't you guys be making more then enough money to afford it? The secret to RUclips is put money in to get more money out
the Black Window tank is of a 70s model racing kart from the same company that made Wasp karts. I'm amazed you got the fueling correct in the carbs with those straight pipes.
"Ethanol Free Gas" Biggest scam ever. 10% Ethanol is a federal law, which means when it makes its way to the gas station, it already has 10% Ethanol. Ethanol isnt the issue though, its the Acetone,Butane,Heptane,Methanol,Benzen,Naptha Etc. no numbnuts ethanol free gas isn't a scam. I haul this shit got a living, it is still perfectly legal to sell 100% conventional gasoline I haul alot of it, no ethanol. all e10 blends are sub octane until the pure ethanol gets blended at the loading terminal. 100% conventional gasoline is just that regular old pre ethanol gas. it is also not good to let e10 gas sit for long periods of time, you get what is called phase separation where the ethanol actually separates itself from the gasoline, and you could be running ethanol instead of a blend
Erin Howell And what your preaching is a marketing scam, made by brands like IsoHeet, who put pure Methanol or Isopropanol (Depending on the bottle) in your gas tank to "Fix" the ethanol issue. As if using Alcohol will make your "10% alcohol" gasoline last longer. Its a scam rehashed by mechanics who cant look past a sticker. If the government tells you its "1 Change Ethanol" You can bet there lieing for there benefit, not yours. History has shown this, time and time agein. BTW, you receiving a load and distributing the load doesnt prove a thing. Other than you believe what your told. And blender pumps are for mixing 87 with 93 to make 89..(The majority are, unless there running an E85 stations which require upgraded equipment)
+\ 0909 all blend pumps do is make mid grade gas for places that don't have a mid grade tank, mid grade is made of 65% regular and 35% premium. I have made it on my trailer before it's called splash blending (in the past it was the only way to get mid grade). You don't realize how stupid you sound, it's like listening to somebody talk about cars, that knows absolutely nothing about cars other than what somebody else tells them. as I said before, ethanol is blended with the cbob (sub octane gas) at the loading rack. You could get 2 snowmobile carbs, and use the adapters from the snowmobile and mount them to the motor intake ports, and you can use the throttle cables off of the snowmobile and then get a jetting kit to tune and then run separate k&n style air filters
More of the off-road cart please. Like a straight pipe on the off-road cart and maybe an intake just to let it breath better and get the tight spark plug
hey, ike, I've worked on small engines for thirty years, and have my own business. what that solenoid is supposed to do is cut fuel flow to the engine when the ignition is turned off, preventing raw fuel going through the cylinder and valves to the hot exhaust causing a backfire as the engine winds down when turned off. I'm sure you've had a riding mower make a big "bang" when you shut it off after mowing. this is to prevent that. but half the time, it will still backfire.
You guys kind of got it right on what that solenoid is, it's actually called a back fire prevention solenoid its job is to prevent unburned fuel from getting into the exhaust, most mower racers remove them, you don't really need to put it back unless your finding that the engine is flooded. One of the new trends in Mower Racing is putting Mikuni carburetors on lawn tractor engines they actual perform extremely well, something else you should consider doing.
I bet the dual carb would work well and give a small performance buff. Only thing I would be sceptical of would they may be jetted a tad rich but easy fix if needed by jetting it down a size. Just make sure you grab a carb synchronizer to balance them otherwise it may run funky.
Ive been using these engines on equipment since they came out. I have 3 of them. What Ive figured out is that the vacuum diaphram fuel pumps are just junk. The engines run great if the fuel source is above them, but they will not pull fuel very far at all. I replaced my fuel pump with one from a vangaurd engine and all is well now.
Yeah, seeing that 670cc or a small motorcycle engine (250cc maybe?) in an AWD format would be pretty awesome to see and I bet y'all would like it A LOT just because you can go more places and do a lot more with it - Of course it would be rediculously powerful aswell!
The solenoid is a anti backfire solonoid. Small engines idle at higher speeds which causes the engine to draw fuel into the cylinder at shut down. The hot muffler fills with unburned gas causing a backfire after shut down.
+CarsandCameras That fuel solenoid is just so that the carb doesn't flood and so that the gas won't leak into the crankcase. It just shuts it off when it's not in use. I deal with that everyday as a lawnmower mechanic
That plunger is an anti backfire valve. You did the quick fix by cutting it off . All it does is when you shut off the engine and it's winding down keeps the carb from pulling fuel causing it to backfire.
The solenoid is the EPA anti backfire that all manufacturer put on lawn mower engines. unscrew and cut the plunger off and then install a fuel shut off valve to prevent the gas from filling the carb. been doing it on riding mower briggs engines for years. no problems after this mod
I got a Honda GXV390 mounted to my wip race mower that i had the carb replaced with a $15 chinese version that works surprisingly well actually. A couple of those should work perfectly fine provided a nice kit to get the carbs properly mounted. A GXV390 uses the same carbs as a GX390 since the difference between the two is that the GXV is a vertical shaft engine (Hence the V in the name).
I was thinking fuel silonoid when you said fuel wasnt reaching the carb and filter. The silonoid is just incase you backfire in the carb it shuts the fuel off to keep it from burning up.
yes stwin carbs will work you need carbs from half the cc your running and a few diff jet sizes also you need to set up a dual link thottle with adjuster or they could be off balance
I have a honda vt500 with factory dual-carbs and it runs nicely if the rubber needle valve liners don't snag on the carb and stop it from moving. as long as you watch out for that Go ahead.
It's called an antibackfire solonoid. I deal with them a lot with mowers. They are expensive and somewhat pointless. You'll get some flames occasionally then you shut it down.
You should use dual round slide mikuni carbs. They are great carbs, easy to find and you could more finely tune them in comparison to the honda gx carbs. Also just about every power sports dealer carries jets for them.
Just started watching your vids tonight and I had a lingering feeling you were from NC. Glad to get my assumptions confirmed, hopefully will run into you one day.

a backfire is just a symptom of the engine being lean (temporary or long term), so yes you are right, but you way overthought it lol

It has brakes
Cause all the work time and money went into the motor.
+Jack Mehoff that's the definition of a bad time lol
That's why it's called the black widow lol
the most powerfull kart has a yamaha R1 engine... look it up on youtube
anything with a wheelie bar passes the badass test
Ichiban Moto why are u always say "BaddAss"!?
It doesn't have to have a wheelie bar that doesn't matter it matters if the wheelie bar has a functional use. Then it's BaDAsS.
So a stock civic with a wheelie bar is badass?
I am an amateur RC Builder, and now thanks to you guys I am moving up to go karts. thanks for the inspiration!
awd go kart or turbo diesel go kart or one with a bike engine or a awd go kart with bike engine
TURBO DIESEL?? IF THEY COULD PULL THAT OFF THAT WOULD BE COOL!!

Hell yes that would be badass with a stage 4 and twin turbo
Carburators and turbo’s don’t mix
Yes
Thats not possible all though you can supercharge it with a hair dryer or something but I dont recommend it
Anti-backfire solenoid. It is only needed if you are turning the engine off at full rpm, such as in a generator application.

maybe you guys could extend the frame a couple of inches cause you look pretty uncomfortable riding it lol
will handle worse, then will need a larger wheel base, mad work
We already added around 3 inches to the length to fit the engine. We don't want to lengthen it any more because it will weaken the frame.
needs to be wider

I just learned a lot about troubleshooting a carburetor
Dude that was awesome!!Hahaha...pulling wheelies like a beast!
The Black Widow is the best kart you guys have built.
Love the sound of that engine!
The shutoff valve helps the engine not to backfire when you shut it off as well as keeping the engine from hydraulic locking with a gravity feed tank.
i am a small engine machanic and i think that the dual set up carb should work but u will need to set the air fuil and maybe the jetting.
I love that garage
For sizing carburetors: buy carburetors with a throat diameter larger or equal to the intake valve diameter .
The solenoid prevents the muffler from loading up with unburned gas on shutdown and igniting and going bang. It could possibly prevent dieseling too.
That engine on the drift trike. My God!
The solenoid that is on the carb bowl, is actually a backfire solenoid. When it's faulty it doesn't let the motor run
I see that mint Z32 on the lift back there. Nice.
Damn I love that sound gosh dang man
I have a honda vt500 with factory dual-carbs and it runs nicely if the rubber needle valve liners don't snag on the carb and stop it from moving. as long as you watch out for that Go ahead.
Hi from newzealand..that thing is sick nice job guys
channel and both of you have changed so much
It's called an antibackfire solonoid. I deal with them a lot with mowers. They are expensive and somewhat pointless. You'll get some flames occasionally then you shut it down.
I have dual on my 6 cylinder homemade go kart and it runs like a champ
that looks ridiculously fun....good shit
You should use dual round slide mikuni carbs. They are great carbs, easy to find and you could more finely tune them in comparison to the honda gx carbs. Also just about every power sports dealer carries jets for them.
Nice pyrotechnics at the end!
Just started watching your vids tonight and I had a lingering feeling you were from NC. Glad to get my assumptions confirmed, hopefully will run into you one day.
