Actually the engines in the square ones (R8 and R10) had been redesigned from the Dauphine engine and so long as you kept the coolant and oil levels up could easily reach 150,000 miles. The body would be gone long before the engine in most cases. We had two of them in our family and they just kept going, longer than the air cooled VWs we had.

I had a Renault 10, no! I had three! I loved those cars. They were outstanding. Off road they were spectacular. They're narrower than Jeeps. I was way the hell up some donkey trail in Death Valley camping, when a couple of Jeeps showed up. They dismounted mouths agape and asked, "How did you get here?!" I always laughed at them. "I just drove here, why?"
Volkswagen beetles were always excellent off-road because they have full independent suspension and the engine weight over the drive wheels. Thee Renaults were the same except their engine is cast iron with aluminum heads, water cooled. They also have big 4-wheel disk brakes! However, I gotta say I had to definitely work with the blistering power pumped out by the most excellent engine. All 47 horsepower. LOL I painted one of them Cadillac Metallic Red. BTW; that engine was so straightforward and compact that I often saw it in midsize garden tractors. Thanks for the blast from MY past!

I left the following comment on your last video:
"I looked at the Automobile Catalog and found some data for a 1969 Renault 10. When fitted with the stock 1100 cc engine and a 3 speed semi-automatic gearbox, the car was claimed to go at 83 mph with 46 hp.
Hmmm... if we assume that P = C(V*V*V) where P is power, V is velocity and C is a constant then plugging in 83 mph and 46 hp into the equation gets a constant of .00008 hp/mph^3.
Using 22 hp and .00008 hp/mph^3, we get 65 mph.
Hypothetically we should see 65 mph with the stock Predator. This seems wildly optimistic to me. I'll be impressed if we see 50 mph before we modify the engine."
But that is assuming that the engine is actually putting out 22 SAE gross hp in the Renault, that the power loss through the CVT clutch is no worse than through a standard pressure plate clutch, and that the 83 mph top speed from Automobile Catalog is actually valid. That said, 55 mph (the former American national speed limit) is far more reasonable than my numbers.

Strange enough, this lawn mower engine doesn't sound much worse than the original Cléon engine. I grew up near the Renault factory of Billancourt and the streets were packed with Renault 4, 8 and sometimes 10. They were all ugly and not very reliable. Did I mention compostable, too? They could rust at the speed of light! Yours is in very good condition for its age: almost new!!! These cars could barely go over a 100 km/h when well tuned (30 minutes after a complete tune-up) and the front wheels would often leave the ground when accelerating, making it a very dangerous vehicle. Adding 50kg of sand (in 2 separate bags) under the front hood (right behind the lights) saved many lives 😨

I've owned a '62 SAAB 96 with the 36 hp 850 cc 2 stroke, it was tapped out at about 60~65 mph in top gear (3rd) ratio for third gear, counting the slight overdrive, it comes out to about 5.10 overall from the engine to the driving front wheels. Also accounting for the 15X165 tires (like a Volkswagen Beetle). The 3 cylinder 2 cycle could be economized by using the freewheel and coasting in slight tailwinds and downgrades. The SAAB has to be about the same weight as the Renault, about 1600# but it's much more aerodynamic. Mine got on average about 28 to 33 MPG. The engine is a long stroke, old school European design based on the old DKW Auto Union's Schnerle piston ported inducted design, but SAAB actually had an ignition distributor with mechanical and vacuum advance control, so their engines were very flexible. You could cruise at about 27 mph in 3rd and then floor it and accelerate slowly to 60. They make fun noises and at night the big spark plug's glass insulators conducts light from the combustion and you could tell which cylinder had a fouled spark plug by which one wasn't sparkling. That's all I have to share, I kind of wish I kept both the wagon and the sedan as they both would have been ripe for reengine-ing with the Predator 620. I predict you won't be able to reach 55, probably best at about 45 to 50 if it's anything like my SAAB, it's happy cruise speed was 47.

She carried a broken piece of the choke assembly in her purse, and would show it to each new person she met, wondering if they knew how she could find a replacement. PS some guy named Redbeard has a RUclips program, he is building an off-road cart with one of these motors, put a supercharger on it, has it up to an estimated 70 horsepower. That would get you up to 70 mph, I figure, but the upgraded internals for the motor are probably pretty expensive. Good luck with that lawn!

What a cool project! I love those old Renaults. That's how I found this video I searched for videos on old Renaults and this was one of the first that came up. would be really cool to get that car in Daily Driver condition and use it as an actual car with that little lawn mower engine.

I love that it sounds, and looks, like a gigantic lawn mower. For laughs, you need to make a "spoiler" that looks like the handle of a push mower.

Over time, the surface of your headlights will oxidize and become foggy or yellowed. You can clean them up with toothpaste, which is a very mild abrasive. First, clean the headlights with soap and water. Then, squeeze some toothpaste onto a soft cloth and rub it into the wet headlight in a circular motion. Keep adding toothpaste and water as needed. Once finished, rinse thoroughly, and dry it with a soft cloth. Apply a headlight sealant for future protection.

Most people have a can of WD-40 in the garage, as it’s good for so many jobs around the house. But this magic lubricant can also help you remove dried up, dead bugs from the front of your car. Just spray it on the affected areas and let it sit for about ten minutes. Then, with a sponge or soft cloth and a little elbow grease, you can wipe those bugs away much more easily. Afterward, wash your vehicle as usual.

When winter comes and freezes up your windshield, have a quick fix ready to go. Add one part water and two parts rubbing alcohol (70 percent isopropyl alcohol) to a spray bottle and shake to mix. Spray the solution onto your iced up windshield and the frost and ice will start to break apart and melt.

I'm thinking sub- 50's ( around 40 mph ) depending on flat roads and wind direction ( Thats right KANSAS ) never mind ! LOL . My grandpa use to say you can move a semi with a 5hp motor depending on gearing ! So with a bigger Drive clutch ( snowmobile ) and a bigger driven clutch ( snowmobile ) i'd say 80 mph ! Im French an the Plate registration is from the second half of 00’s.
XN, in the 01 department de l’Ain must be around 2006-8
So i’m not sure about the 37 year thing…
Plus in France you cannot modify almost nothing, even a remap can be found by police experts in big accidents. So she must have her original motor, and a valid technical control to be street legal, so she must’ve been perfectly functioning 15 years ago…

I had a Renault 12 and its reverse gear shift was odd and maybe the 10 has the same style - it's worth a try.
On the 12 you had to not only move the gear shift towards where reverse was meant to be, but you also have to push the gear stick down towards the floor at the same time. Otherwise it simply won't engage. Might work.

  • @davemeerts5301
    @davemeerts5301 Год назад +2

For reverse gear pres the stick downwards so like you wanna press it thru the floor....hold it pressed in and make the movement with stick for reverse (move to the left and backwards ) for this gearbox

I got a clapped out first gen ford courier with the 4 speed. Made like 70 something hp new.. I'm pretty sure it's closer to 50 or less now. Took it out on the interstate and after many MANY nerve racking miles, I was able to achieve a top speed of 83 mph using gps. New it weighed 3900 lbs (give or take almost 5 decades of weight reduction). Given that Renault probably weighs about half of that, I would assume similar aerodynamics and half the HP and probably insanely low rear gear My best guess at top speed is 60-65 flat out stock with the predator. I think aero vs hp is going to be the biggest obstacle to overcome. I'm stoked to see what this thing will do on the highway.

55 was my best guess also. Glad Mr ai Robot we think alike. Shoot, it may do 62mph with a long enough flat straight away. Somewhere the torque horsepower curve will meet air resistance but 70mph it won't be unless the tires have 95psi, and the wheel bearing grease is changed out to wd40.
