In real life, flying into battle like this would have been sooo scary. If you crash into the sea and the enemy doesn't pick you up, well, theres a rotten horrible way to slowly and torturously die of dehydration and exhaustion
I saw an actual Corsair in a small airport in WA and also did a dive on a crashed Corsair off the coast of Oahu while visiting a diver friend in Hawaii. It was supposed to be a check flight and pilot checked everything except the gas tank it seems. Ran out of gas and had to ditch the plane. It sank in about 100 ft of water and it was pretty deteriorated from sitting on the bottom since 1947 or so.
F4Us did not make straight on glide paths for carrier landings. The nose was so long that pilots field of view was very restricted. Many landing errors happened. The Brits came up with a fix that had the Corsairs turning left at the last moment onto the deck to have the pilot's eyeballs have the most time to see where they were going.

With rockets you should attack the broadside of the ship. Don't fire with the machine guns while flying your attack to be focused on the rocket attack.
Agree, when "pacific Fighters" was released for the original IL-2, that was about all I played, pacific theater and the corsair and lightning are my favorite aircraft.
I used to play IL2 Sturmovik online quite a bit, through Hyperlobby. Now, with Windows/machine upgrades all that fun is ancient history. Have any of you people found a way to play IL2 on a Windows 10 machine?
@@TheKusa5 Yeah... unfortunately it has fallen by the wayside. There are still a couple of servers still quite active - the Russian IRSS=Dogfight server and the Fun~4~All server. Games on Hyperlobby used to be a whole lot of fun... until they started getting all PC about it - you can't swear any more and shit like that! haha
In the normal game they don't. We edited the ships.ini to enable .50s to be able to damage ships. If you look closely at the attack at 32:11 you can see the destroyer get sunk by machine gun fire. When a ship gets destroyed there is a yellow flash on the water surface that reliably gives it away.
@@Fishyyy that's great, thanks for the reply! I always thought that cannons and such should be able to damage cargo vessels and other unarmored naval targets.
I cant help but feel that a 127mm rocket with the destructive potential of a 5" Naval gun shell is a little different from a 55mm rocket with just over 1 lb of explosives inside lol
@@01Laffey Not to mention the "tiny tims" (which were designed for attacking warships) had nearly 3 times the amount of explosive that the HVARS had if i remember correctly.
Not very good formation flying for the first 10 minutes! No 1 out front, his wing man was way behind where he sould have been and the rest of the squadron were scattered all over the sky! if they had been bounced they would have been shot down like fish in a barrel. Other wise a good video.
Actually, a lose formation is way better for situational awareness and makes it way more likely to spot enemies, since you're not busy looking at the aircraft next to you.
@@Fishyyy Yes we know that now but at the time a tight formation was always preached, especially in bombers but also in fighters. The British took a long time to change their tactical formations the "finger four" was no good compared with the German tactics.

Apart from the Spitfires and Hurricanes, the Corsair's were a fantastic fighter and light bomber aircraft.

Everyone and their mother knows that story. You don't need the curved approach in IL-2.
The u.s. Navy had a fix too. Give them to the Marines
In il2 you can raise the seat / pilot view and see the flight deck. It is a flight sim 100pct accuracy can be applied or not it's about fun.
VF-17 did land on carrier's before settling in the slot islands for bases.

HVAR rockets have the same explosive content as 5 inch naval shells. A Corsair fitted with 8 HVARs was equivalent of 2 broadsides from a destroyer.
