    Professor Picks the Top 3 Binders/Portfolios For Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, and Standard Sized Trading Card Games
    In the now over 4 years of reviewing accessories for Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon and other standard sized trading cards, I have carefully evaluated and graded over FIFTY different brands and styles of Binders and Portfolios. There have been a few extraordinarily excellent products, and many, many extraordinary failures as well as everything in between,
    But here in this video, I point to the three absolute best binders and portfolios currently available. These are the best of the best, even among the many, many portfolios that have received A grades from me, these 3 stand hand and shoulders above the rest and are The Professor’s Top 3 Picks.
    Please note, this will be a brief summary review, as each of these products has been reviewed at length previously. If you’d like to see the FULL review for each item, a link to the original review has been listed in this video’s description.
    And now, the Professor’s Top 3 Picks for binders and portfolios in no particular order:

    I'm a Yugioh player, and although your videos of this type are more geared toward MTG storage and collection you've been incredibly helpful to me! I've fallen in love with the collecting aspect of trading cards, and your reviews and advice on purchasing binders, sleeves and portfolios has easily saved me a great deal of money. I only wish I'd discovered your channel before I got started! Keep up the great work and thanks for all your help!

    I never understood collectors portfolios like this. I always use a heavy duty 3-ring binder and some high quality 9-pocket pages.
    It's easier to shuffle cards around as your collection evolves because you can take the pages out,, move them around, or add more as needed. It's more flexible because you can pick the style of 3-ring binder (zippered, water resistant, etc..). It's more cost effective because you can just replace parts as they wear out. Lastly, you can have a varying collection size because you can just use a larger or smaller binder, or just add some more sheets.
    I've never seen them in 4 and 12-pocket sizes, but that's really the only downside I see. Unless you absolutely need something to fit in a tiny bag or you have to have your playsets displayed in a nicer way, I don't see any reason to purchase these accessories.

    • @draheim90
      @draheim90 6 лет назад +4

      I felt the same. But I think that portfolios serve slightly different purposes than binders. Portfolios are for showing off and cards that aren’t going anywhere (except maybe your deck). Binders are better for standard because things constantly rotate, but having playsets of modern/legacy/vintage in portfolios is a nicer option.
      Also binders can fall apart easier and often have sharp edges/corners that can catch on bags and other things. The Zipfolio and Legion Dragonhide, by comparison, are smooth, look nice, are uniform thickness, and won’t catch on stuff. Easier to fit in some bags too.

    • @darthfuhrer117
      @darthfuhrer117 6 лет назад +2

      i used to use 3 ring binders too , the issue is as your collection grows and you put in more pages or if you close the binder the wrong way you can get binder dings on your cards little marks left by the rings themselves which can lower a cards value. with these portfolios there are no rings to hurt your cards and they have just enough pages to hold a full set of cards i have mine color coded for reference and easy way to pick out what i need , like for my my green is standard and my blue is edh and my red is my personal keep cards. at the end of the day it all comes down to what works for each player , i hope my comment has helped in some way . and prof i love your vids. your one of the reasons i started my own channel :)

    • @dungeonmaster16
      @dungeonmaster16 6 лет назад +2

      That varies on environment and how hey are sleeve. If you sleeve once or double (perfect fit and normal sleeve.) high chance they won't since they are secured in there and moisture doesn't get in. In one of tolarian vids way he does it is like I mention, Put in binder, case, box or drawer and for those last two get one of those anti moisture bags (used for drier food like jerky.) and put it in storage/drawer to prevent curling.

  • @draheim90
    @draheim90 6 лет назад

    Maybe I should add this comment to the video in which you talk about it, but the video is rather old and thus comments are less likely to be read.
    Ultra Pro makes the zippered 9 pocket binder that you reviewed and gave it poor marks. However, I feel like you did not give it a fair shake. Maybe the style I have is different but I bought one many years ago (8-10?) and there are a couple things about this binder that make it one of the better options in my opinion.
    First, it can be used in conjunction with Ultra Pro platinum pages. Thus if part of the page breaks you can simply replace it, which you cannot do with the other portfolios.
    Second, you can add a LOT of sleeves to the binder, allowing for storage of more cards. In line with this, you can put close to 10 cards in a single slot (yes the page will be forever stretched but if you dedicate pages for bulk purpose, then it's fine) for carrying lands or things of that nature.
    Third, and perhaps most importantly, there are those pockets that mean you only need to carry this single binder instead of having to carry multiple binders, deck boxes, cases, etc., when you go play. The two slots next to the binder rings fit Ultra Pro deck boxes (and maybe other deck boxes but idk) allowing you to hold two fully sleeved decks along with your collection. Or you can fit a deck in one and use the other for tokens, lands, other cards you might need (like for a draft or for stock). The other pockets are perfect for dice, coins, extra sleeves, pens, etc.
    So tl;dr - I think the Ultra Pro zipped binders, while maybe not the BEST quality or durability (though had mine again for almost a decade and had 0 issues with it) are something to consider due to their versatility and utility.

    In my opinion the best binder is The Ultra-Pro Standard 9 pocket. The cheap one that holds 180 cards.
    Available in many different colours, including black, black, and Pokemon.
    I have 2 of them, one of them I have had for 8 years now. Still no rips in the pages, none of pockets are ripped. Never has any cards ever fallen out.
    And for only £10 - £15.

      I understand the concern there, but the bigger problem I am hearing is that I have simply reviewed too many items at this point for people to easily go through. When there's 16 Deck Box videos and 12 Binder videos, people can't parse it all easily. That's the idea of these. "Look, you want to know the 3 best? These are them! Now feel free to dive into the library of reviews if you like."
      Especially helpful at Christmas time!

    Professor, what binder do you recommend that uses clear pages?? I want to start an artist proof collection, and to be able to look at both sides of my cards would be amazing, thanks!!

    Have you ever done a review on the “Top Deck 500 Card Pocket Binder Pro”? I’ve seen good prices online but not many reviews. What’s your opinion on this one? Hard to get zip binders, so please let me know quickly, if you can! Thanks

    Dear Professor, are you going to do an "Unstable" video in the near future ? I think it's an amazing set and a lot of people are interested in it.

    Hi, Thanks a lot for this great review.
    This review video helped me a lot giving the insight. I was wondering if you could do another review for 2020 for binders and portfolio? Mostly trying to find some thats actually transparent so the back can also be viewed. For example would have been great if theres a portfolio or binder as good as Dex Protector or Legion Dragohide if it was transparent.
    Also if possible could you please check if its worth to invest on Yanoman binder and their sleeves as they and Mayday games and Gamegenic have different sizes that is not made by any other brands like dragon shield and kmc. The cards used is not related to magic the gathering cards though so not sure if you could review it.

    Another great product review Professor! Just curious what your thoughts are on how well these binders hold cards without penny sleeves on them? More importantly, can thy hold multiple cards in each slot (unsleeved of course)? Perhaps these binders are only for showcasing and protecting one card per slot rather than mass-storage. On another note, have you reviewed high capacity heavy-duty traditional D-ring binders (like 3" or larger)? I'm always on the hunt for the perfect bulk storage binder. I'll offer a word of advice to all card collectors storing their cards in D-ring binders: Always leave the top left pocket of the first 9-pocket page empty. It invariably will leave a binder mark over time. Also, always get a D-ring configuration, not a circular ring...unless you're buying one of these ringless binders shown in this review. Those are pretty sweet.

      All of these can hold stacks of unsleeved singles just fine. None have pockets so tight that they can only accommodate 1-2 cards, far from it. I'd say out of all 3, the Ultimate Guard line has the largest pockets for what you are looking to do.

      Are the pockets in the Ultra Pro quad-row binder the same size/tightness as the Ultimate Guard line?

    This video just made me realize that it's pointless to get into anything other than singleton formats if I want to afford to otherwise pay bills.
    There's also something funny about storing thousands of dollars of cards in a $30 binder. :-)

    What are your thoughts on today's press release that Duel Decks are being discontinued and the newly announced Standard legal Challenger Decks that R&D are forging ahead with? I've collected all the Duel Decks and will be very sad to see these portals into MTG's past disappear...plus i loved collecting the funky Ultra Pro boxes that launched with them!
