Just bought my Mavic Pro (first drone). I'm a still photographer and was pleasantly surprised to see a video on drone photography. Really appreciate your doing this and hope you will do more still imagery tutorials (along with the videography ones). Your tips on settings are very helpful. Editing tutorials would be great. (I'm a long-time Aperture user and just now trying to learn Lightroom!) Appreciating your work!

Thank you for the video, some really amazing shots. It's frustrating you can't fly the drone over the beaches or Presdio here in SF (I see you are in Bay Area too).
I've not experimented much with still photography from the Mavic but this video has inspired me to get RAW mode turned on and get out there and take some aerial stills!
One comment, and I know I'll sound like the drone police, but your shot flying over the beach seemed very low given the density of people underneath. As an experienced drone pilot myself, I'd be a little worried if I saw a drone fly over me on the beach at that altitude.

Excellent video content! You're from old school when it comes to image processing and I like it. I do the same.
I am a wedding photographer and I'm thinking about adding a short drone video footage/still images to my services. So I need a drone and I already ordered a cheap $100 drone as my practice toy. Once I got confident in flying my drone, I will get a better one. So I have a question.
You know that DJI is going to release new Mavic Air 2 tonight and its price is set to $799. With a fly more package, it will be close to or over $1000. You can get a good used Mavic pro for under $700 or little over $700. Do you think the Mavic Pro is still a good buy today?
I recently bought a mavic pro fly more for 550$🤯 once you get the hang of it its incredible. I'm using it for weddings and it's definitely worth the money. You don't need the newest one to make great content. If people could make incredible content with it over the last couple years I don't see why you can't either. Remember the best gear is the one you have with you.

Thanks for the video! Question: If you had to choose, I know you don't want to, but if you had to choose one setting for mostly landscape videos in nature and on the ocean AND could NOT edit later, What settings would you choose?
I would pick the neutral color profile!

I have only had my Mavic 2 for a few months now and am getting more comfortable flying it and taking videos and also want to learn how to take better stills. Your video is extremely helpful in guiding me towards that goal and need to learn more about post editing which I have never done. Have used Adobe Photo Shop Elements and a few other programs for adjusting photos but have never shot in RAW. Do you have any suggestions on what to use in getting started?

Lovely.Actually I find the default settings for video shooting on the Mavic pretty decent although too bright, but the pictures are not exceptional indeed, thanks for the settings Attilio

I am not sure if dji fixed it, but if you set sharpness to anything below +1 it will force noise reduction in dark/ shadowed areas and smooth it out completely.
I am not experiencing this issue with sharpness set at -1!

Good video again! What LUT have you used for the video parts? It would be good if you do a tutorial on how to edit the Mavic photos as they always look quite 'pale' in my opinion!
Thanks Paulo! I didn't use any LUT on the video this time. And I am planning to make a video on developing the photos in post....if you shoot RAW, the photo is really flat, so it needs some adjustments!

I recently got a Phantom 3, I also really like taking pictures. I'm not so new to flying one but, taking pictures with one is new. I've taken it up a few times in Beginner mode and taken afew test videos to get used to the prospective. I'm interested in taking the pictures higher and I'm interested in how far some of the higher photos can get you? I really enjoyed your presence in this video, I will be watching more. Presence is one of the things I lack most in my videos. I hope to do more Interview style videos. I'm interested in your microphone use, brand and style? What camera do you use in interview settings? Do you have any videos that go over your gear more? I really enjoyed watching you pack your bag, did you gather all the things, pack and then repack? I can never seem to find everything I want to bring until the last minute.

I thought California didn't allow drone flying on beaches? And I would think San Diego would have many no fly zones due to the Navy base there. Was that a challenge there?

As an advocate of large sensors and new to UAV aerial photography (having used my airplane and medium format film and full-frame DSLRs for 15 years in this regard), I must admit that I've had (highly surprisingly) spectacular results with photostitch panoramics (Lightroom Photomerge Panorama utility) using the Mavic camera in Portrait mode (vertical), overlapping by about 1/3 (utilizing the grid markings). The proof is in the printing, having enlarged the below referenced image to 19"x49" (printed area; Epson 9900)... so far. I plan to try 36" wide roll paper in the near future. The image resolution is quite acceptable-and I'm quite fixated on resoultion. This is in addition to the fact that the dynamic foreground (surf) of the referenced image was somehow ("automagically") merged into a scene that is visually successful. This is how I've managed to get the most out of the Mavic's tiny sensor and lens. Currently in my "New Additions" gallery there are two other photostitch Mavic images, another at Montana De Oro (my first attempt, done on a whim with no idea it would be successful) and another of a vineyard near Santa Margarita in San Luis Obispo County, California (Though I'm working on fixing an issue with some of the straight lines of the vineyard not quite merging, as seen at higher resolution; this will be a do-over in better light anyways), and eight single-frame Mavic stills which are technically pretty good when printed (South Fork Eagle River, Alaska waterfall x3, along/above Shell Creek Road x3, Property at Kelsey, California and South Fork of American River at Colma); not to the standard of my Canon 5D or the Fujifilm GFX 50S I hope to acquire someday, but quite good within bounds, nonetheless.

Great information, thank you. I have learned about video mostly since I got into drones. It's now time to learn photography with it. Do you use nd filters with pictures? they probably aren't as necessary like with video are they. Except uv filters or polorizers.
Thank you! Yes, you are correct...they are not as necessary...at the same time, it happens to me that I will be taking videos as well...so an ND filter is often on my camera!

Anche io non uso mai i Preset su Lightroom. Al limite ne posso creare di volta in volta alcuni semplici con delle impostazioni base per una serie di foto con luce simile. Cmq si, poter cambiare il punto di ripresa e fare foto con il drone è fantastico. Ho visto che usi il filtro anche per fare le foto vero? Non solo per i video.

Stavo notando in questo video (min.3:54), quando descrivi l'impostazione del video in manual mode, che diversamente da quando descrivi nello stesso video fatto in Italiano, la regolazione dello shutter dovrebbe essere impostato affinché il maggior numero delle informazioni siano all'interno dei midontes (e fai vedere l'istogramma). Mentre nel video in Italiano descrivi che l'impostazione del valore dello shutter è dato dal doppio del numero di fps impostati (es. 30fps = 60 shutter). Scusami per la pignoleria ma è per capire meglio se alla fine la best configuration può essere il mix dei due metodi. grazie! Max
Ciao Massimiliano, si qui parlo dei settaggi fotografici, invece per quanto riguarda il video vale il discorso del doppio del frame rate, per dare alle immagini video un minimo di motion blur...

+1 sharpening is the only one that works for me, anything less gives a mushy image...

Shah Rc well you saw the settings I use for photography, in this video! Then I would recommend to plan your photos ahead and be aware of how the sun is lighting your subject... good luck!
Just curious how this is legal? Even as a hobbyist I thought you weren’t allowed to fly over a densely populated area?
Style settings don't matter as you shoot in raw :-)
