In 1998, Stan Winston Studio was experiencing a pause in its project schedule following the success of the beloved action comedy film, Small Soldiers. Besides the work for hire that had established the studio, for a long time, Stan Winston had been creating his own intellectual properties (IP)--iconic characters and creatures. Suddenly, he had the team and they had the time to bring these characters to life, as actual figures. Stan envisioned collectibles, comics, trading cards, all with his original creatures, characters and storylines. In the early 2000s, Flash websites were skyrocketing in popularity. The studio website had launched and was getting attention. A Stan Winston Creatures #website seemed like the best way to introduce, support and promote the proposed line of #toys.
Stan Winston School of Character Arts co-founders Matt Winston and Erich Grey Litoff chatted with three of the original website’s creators, character designer/digital artist Jim Charmatz, screenwriter/director Stiles White and character designer/illustrator Terry Wolfinger, about the vision for the website and the time, effort and creativity it took to construct it.

I was there at SDCC and was blown away at these new figures and picked up a few back then.I have such fond memories and these toy lines and were way ahead of it's time.
I cant tell you how much this video means to me. This was such a huge part of my inspiration and excitement as a kid, i was 11 years old when series 1 released and i was already a huge fan of Stan's other works. Predator, Pumpkinhead, Terminator, Aliens, Jurassic Park and many others. I was just starting to self learn how to sketch but these figures and characters pushed me so much harder to be creative and continue to improve. I remember just being ecstatic when a new wave of Stan Winston Creatures was announced and going to Toys r Us to get one, such a special time in my early years. I would say this was a bigger impact to me than even a movie alone would have been. I can't thank you all enough and Stan (my idol and so very missed) for your hard work and dedication and for providing me with inspiration all these years.
weird, I just started collecting Stan's figures from the early 2000's, seeing that character now in my feed had me do a double take. Mutant Earth and Extreme Gargoyles ftw
Exact situation here man!! Those mutant earth are one of my old time favorites.
@@xxbeholderxx Indeed. In many ways they were better than their competition, Mcfarlane, who was way further in the game at the time. From a sculptural and detail point of view anyways. I wonder what else they would've done had they stayed around...
I wonder if the studio still has that 3D Trakk model. I would very much support another attempt at a Mutant Earth movie if it was ever considered again (the comics are pretty cool). Now that I think about it, Stan's comics are also pretty great source material for games as well.
Hell, if you guys ever decided, for whatever reason, to take up the mantle for Stan's last movie project, The Suffering adaptation, I would totally support that as well.
This one goes straight to Matt Winston himself reason why we love your father so much and why we love you representing your father so much is because he is like the Jackie Chan the real deal we want to see that versus CGI! We loved and respected that art form but when you know what you're seeing came from real human being as a collaboration as a team is by far more! Love and respect CGI when it's absolutely necessary but the biggest respect goes to the humans bring in the live-action to life! Why? Because it wasn't as easy and was the bigger challenge accepted and succeeded like no other that's where the love in the fanbase comes from
He was always right you have the Renaissance artists trying to come to life
so much work went into that dang website that hopefully a lot of people saw...I sure never knew about it. Glad to know about these lines now, can't believe I went so long without knowing...
