  • In this video we look at the performance differences between the fan-less i5 and the fan-assisted i7 editions of Microsoft's new Surface Pro 7 plus with tiger lake cpu. The i5 8gb/128gb cost £849 whereas the i7 16gb/256gb cost us £1390, how much extra performance does the extra £540 really get us?

    I know this video is 2 years old, but just wanted to say Many Thanks! I have a work laptop, and when I travel for work, I didn't want my own personal laptop to take up that much more room! I do need a windows i5 or higher for some of my apps/programs, so the Surface form factor is perfect for me. And even though it's a little dated, the 7+ i5 will suit my needs and I especially appreciate the usb c charging, while still retaining and usb a and micro SD!!! So for me it's perfect while not breaking the bank! Thanks again for your video answering many of my questions, Cheers!

    I'm currently in need of upgrading my SP3 and the i7 is the only logical one simply because I do quite high load work. I do run a 2nd laptop that has nvidia graphics and that typically handles well but as the difference is only ~500 it might be worth the upgrade (taking into account versatility and portability also considering I use it more out of habit). I'll wait for that Lightroom video as that'll help me decide as well. That i5 version is not the LTE version correct?

    I think this is the only video which is doing such a comparison between i5 and i7 in pro 7+. Thank you so much for sharing it. I have one concern. So far I used i7 with 8GB RAM (HP Spectre) for 3 years, and it worked wonderfully well but bit loud at times. I could able to run R studio, matlab, and other office stuff and programming together. Now I wanted to buy surface pro 7+ and thinking of i5, 8GB, 128GB option. My usage is lightweight illustrator/XD, office, and once in a while video editing. Mostly I do programming websites on nodejs and JS. I am wondering if the chosen configuration is good enough for this task. Because i7 version is $820 expensive than i5 which is huge. I wish they had i7, 16GB with less SSD in the spectrum. Please guide.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  3 года назад +1

      It will be perfect for those tasks! The only listed task that will tax the system is the video editing and in all honesty it will cope fine with 1080p video but the render times may just be a little slower than a larger laptop, but for me, I will usually go and take a quick break whilst rendering out a video :)

    Hi i'm struggling to decide between a Pro 7+ i5 and i7.
    The issue is that I need at least 512GB of internal memory and since i5 doesn't offer this setup I was wondering paying the difference to get the i7 with 512GB and 16GB RAM.
    The question is if the Pro 7+ does have a noticeable fan noise or not. I'm intending to used it most of the time in desktop setup (with a 27'' 2K monitor), still having the option of getting the Surface on the go whenever needed. The idea is to replace my DELL laptop and a tablet for one device.
    In short, how is the noise (fan noise) of the Surface Pro 7+ with a i7? Is it really noticeable? Or would it be better to stay with the i5 if I want a quiet device?
    Thank you very much for your thoughts on this topic! And congrats for the great videos.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Gustavo. Ok well in answer to your questions:
      1.the 7+ has an easy to access upgradable SSD. I bought the i5 128gb model for myself and upgraded the SSD as seen here: ruclips.net/video/TZevH4soLmo/видео.html
      2. the i7 fan only really comes on when you are pushing the device hard, so installing updates, video editing, 3d modelling, gaming etc. If you are just using office you will probably rarely hear the fan.
      3. Obviously cost comes into the equation, it is so much cheaper to just get the base model if you are ok with 8gb. My i5 was £840 and Gary's i7 with 16gb/256gb was almost £1400!!
      Hope this helps but any other questions please just ask :)

    Found myself here as a result of my late 2016 SP4 succumbing to the battery swell fault which only came to my attention after clean blowing the bottom of the screen off the chassis, cracking it all the way over in the process.
    Still perfect and perfectly serviceable in every other respect until this single catastrophic event, I’m furious to now learn (through Microsoft support) that Microsoft’s solution to this design fault was the purely “damage limitation”exercise of extending the warranty by 12 months.
    As my device managed (by luck or chance it would seem) to last longer than the warranty (despite clearly and obviously being one of the affected products), the suggested remedy/solution basically reduced to “sorry but look for a good deal on a new model.”
    Now I’m not completely adverse to periodically looking at things in a whats new, whats useful, whats changed, “what would I now prefer or benefit from” kind of way that we all do from time to time but, in this seemingly never ending environmentally waste challenged, disposably culttured world that we live in, it saddens me that such basic consumables like battery and SSD’s (at the very least) have even been allowed to be welded into these devices at the expense of practical, user and environmental friendliness.
    I basically have to trash the whole thing as far as they are concerned because its “not economically sound” to repair them.
    Its the one reason i opted for my 2013 mac book pro over the also available macbook air at the time. I could change my battery in about 3 seconds if it failed or when i needed to.
    I could swap my SSD in about 2 minutes if it failed or when i wanted to.
    Some things are just common sense. I just wish these all consuming companies would get some!
    In fact I’d love to see the market research that formed the basis for the corporate decision to not make these pivotal items accessible and removable. Id love to talk to the customer who said they’d rather throw upwards of £1,000.00 in the bin than change its battery if it was still working well fir them. Just madness.
    Anyway, rant over, your video has convinced me that the i5 model will likely be the direction I go in as I haven’t yet found an alternative that caters for my needs on a day to day basis that ticks as many boxes as the surface. And as you rightly point out, they have at least prolonged the life of all my existing surface accessories like keyboard psu’s etc, so I guess I should be grateful for small victories. Who knows, I may even take a trip to ifixit and see about how to change my own battery and screen so i at least have a back up device for the future. At least i can thank MS for speeding up the screen removal part of the job :-)

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  3 года назад

      Oh man, sorry to hear about that. Battery swelling has been affecting a Lot of brands of laptops but its made worse with the battery not being easily removable and also behind the screen so swelling will damage a screen, most laptops its just the base plate or trackpad that's affected.
      It is not that hard a job to replace the battery, the hardest part is getting the screen off without breaking it but you won't need to worry about that and you can pick up spare screens at quite a reasonable price from eBay.
      At least with the SP7+ you can now access the SSD, that for me was a big win as I didn't have to pay M$ the stupid price to increase the storage.

      There is no such thing as ethical consumerism. Something/someone/somewhere gets screwed one way or another. When it comes to technology, its even worse. People thinking buying Tesla's will save the world, its usually more along the lines they bought the belief so they can sleep better at night. Whatever helps coping with reality I guess. Everything is about profits and market shares. Half the crap that's labelled "recyclable", they tell you ask your nearest facility for details in fine print lol basically its not recyclable unless your jurisdiction handles that kind of material but least they can market themselves as eco friendly. Really I agree with you, the best way to be ethical is actively pro-long the life of whatever you bought, whether its fix a part in a broken computer or sew that hole in your clothes. Technology companies (coughTeslacough) really have no interest in making it easy for you to do that or charge an arm or a leg, at the same time I understand why, consumers want the thinnest and lightest devices, got to cut out parts and weight somewhere in order to compete. In our mobile centric world, I don't see that changing ever. That's why I still prefer to own a desktop, its so easy to fix/swap out a part and the parts themselves can last easily 10 years (mines 8 years old and will probably need to replace the video card soon since it died), but end of the day, its not mobile at all (nor do I need it to be, but its not an option for everyone). Just crazy we want the crispest image on the touchscreen, but one little part breaking makes a completely good screen garbage.

I'd prefer to buy a top of the line computer a this time but I'm having a hard time choosing between the Surface pro 7+ vs Surface pro 7 vs ThinpadYoga vs Thinkpad Carbon X series. I don't have the option to wait till the Pro 8 comes out as the funds must be used within the next month or so. I want something lightweight and prefer the versatility of a touch screen. the pro 7 i7 is not much slower than the 7+ (although the 7+ XE gfx are much better but most people probably won't even notice this). so it will easily last you a couple of years and if you look out for a reduced priced model (there are lots of sales on as they have now released 7+) you probably wouldn't even loose too much if you sold it when the 8 arrives
