Does a root canal hurt? An honest patient's (not a dentist) story.

  • Ok, so I was talking to a colleague during the edit of this video. She mentioned she has had two root canals in her lifetime. One was painless, and one was the most painful thing she has ever experienced. And she has two kids! Turns out, the amount of pain directly correlates with how early these are detected. So your experiences is defiantly going to be different if your cavity is not detected early. So keep that in mind if you're watching this and wondering if your procedure is going to hurt! Have a great day.

My dentist told me when people say they feel pain during a root canal or filling is because there is infection somewhere around there and infection stops anesthesia from working so often if they catch it early before infection sets in it won't hurt. If it has they give you antibiotics a few days before procedure and then a good dentist will x-ray to make sure it's gone before doing the root canal

An infection underneath a crowned tooth or molar won't go away on it's own or with antibiotics --- that's why a root canal is required. Often when the endodontist drills into your tooth or crown & proceeds into accessing your canals - that is where the true infection is found - along with PUS (🤢) - yep! It needs to be drained and medicine needs to be put in the roots. I know all this because I had a root canal a week ago that went perfectly, however, over this weekend I developed an intense toothache on the opposite side of my mouth - requiring an immediate root canal. I had never experienced so much pain (prior to my appointment with an endodontist). It's now been 27 hours since THAT root canal and I'm definitely still in pain re my jaw, ear, neck & swollen lymph nodes. I'm also on amoxicillin ... Hoping to feel better soon ~ ❤️‍🩹

I had one today. 2.5 hours. The hardest part was keeping my mouth open that long.

You should of had a "dental dam" and a rubber spacer (put on the opposite side) to be able to comfortably keep your mouth open during the procedure. Hope you are feeling better now --- ❤️‍🩹

I’ve had a root canal and I can say I was crying the whole trip there. crying in my seat, crying when they put the gel, but once they put the needle I felt nothing. the needle doesn’t hurt. but it depends where you get it. the needle (for me) doesn’t hurt when you do the upper right and left, when you do the lower teeth (the bitten right and left) it feels like a little bee sting, but it’s really not that bad. just imagine the process without the needle.

In my case there was no pain at all duing the root canal but it was uncomfortable as I had to keep my mouth open all that time...but it doesnt hurt like what you hear about it....again everyones experience may be different but dont be worried about the pain if it is being done properly

I had one pulled in high school because my mother was too cheap to take us in for checkups. Numbing stuff generally doesn't work for me. Lidocaine, epidurals, most OTC pain meds...whatever was in the giant metal Mickey Mouse ear needle worked but *expletive* it hurt going in!!

In my treatment plan , is $2175, including the crown porcelain they’re going to put 😢

I just had two root canals in a week, the second was completely unexpected - due to a massive toothache that appeared out of nowhere! My first cost $1,710 & the second is $2,000 which includes a discount if you don't have dental insurance + pay in cash! Then I will need two crowns 👑 👑 - which are NOT included in the above costs! Count yourself lucky you got both procedures for that price --- 😉
