    I recently heard about a new kind of "smart" store that was making its debut in Seolleung station here in Seoul. The location is nothing but a short bike ride from my flat, so I decided to roll on over and take a look for myself.
    Homeplus, jointly owned by Tesco and Samsung, is the second largest retailer in South Korea. They are billing the venture as a "fourth generation" store. The official name is Homeplus Smart Virtual Store, and they say it is the first store of its kind in the world.
    Seolleung station is in the heart of the Gangnam business district. Its a very wealthy and affluent part of town filled with tall buildings, ritzy hotels, clubs and shops. That being said, Seolleung station itself is rather unassuming. It looks much the same as any other subway station, with various venders littering the passageways between exits. I assume the reason for the placement of the virtual store in Seolleung lies in the fact that it is a transfer station, linking the inner-city green line and the yellow line that runs to the heavily populated Bundang district of Seongnam...

    I'm an American living here in Korea. I feel this is a good system in certain situations. If you are buying grocerys online I don't recommend it, because they won't always bring you fresh stuff. But like electronics and other items, you could have them at your house the very same day your ordered it, just a few hours after clicking the button, best buy or anywhere else don't have that good of service. This is great if you want to do some quick shopping on the go.

    for those of you who say this is dumb and 2 hours is too long to wait...
    people in korea travel on the subway every single day. The station this is located is very smartly located: lot of people come through this station because of business buildings or for transferring purposes. on top of that, going home can usually take a while, especially on the subway. 2 hours is not at all long when you're going home

    It's not a waste of space. I actually enjoy the idea of picking a shipping date, instead of the standard " 5-7 business days "

    To ppl that say why. Y not home shopping: this store is located in the subway station. They can shop on their way home so that when they get home, they get their products delivered within 2 hours since they check out.

    makes sense to have that in a subway, kind of awesome actually, walking through and its like "omg i forgot i needed [item]" scan, and delivered in 2 hours =D awesome!

  • @JustKillHem
    @JustKillHem 13 лет назад

    Ppl see the video again most of your questions can be answered by it. This is ideal for a commuter who does not want to go to a grocery after a long day, with this they can just go straight home and have their grocerys waiting w/o having to lug around bags through hordes of ppl. This is not meant to replace brick and mortar establishments but as an alternative. And most of the products that will be sold will already be familiar thereby eliminating the need for the touch and smell factor.

    for those people who could not understand. the concept behind putting up these stuffs on subways, is because a lot of people are in hurry specially those who were working that instead of going to the supermarket (which will take you some time), it's nicer to save time and have some rest while waiting your product to be delivered at home... it's much more efficient isn't it?
    and why bash these innovative stuffs, if it's your liberty to choose to use this or to go to the supermarket.. lol

  • @JourneyKorea
    @JourneyKorea 13 лет назад

    @MarkC538 Well, because.. this is not a market that people come to specifically to buy groceries... this is a subway station, where millions of people use everyday to get to and from work/school wherever.. to be able to grab a few things before you go to work, and have them delivered to your door by the time you get home is efficient. This is just a way for people to spend there time better, while commuting. Of course, if you're at home and you want to buy groceries you go to the regular stores.

  • @natenate88
    @natenate88 13 лет назад

    @Toedoog no it doesn't. just hover your phone over it and it get's added to your shopping cart. He was just buying multiple items. besides, subways in seoul have heavy traffic and millions of people use public transport everyday so it's more convenient to pick up a few things so you'll have it by the time you get home.

  • @aaronlosing

    Really cool idea.

  • @JourneyKorea
    @JourneyKorea 13 лет назад

    @MarkC538 of course this isn't meant to replace everything. Like I said, it makes the idle time inbetween commuting more efficient. This works in Korea because it is the most wired country in the world. So yes, it's not going to work in other places, where as you said, are smaller and less populated. Check out my "Journey to Seoul" video on my channel and you'll get the feel of how Seoul is like. Let me know what you think.

  • @MichaelLikesTurtles
    @MichaelLikesTurtles 13 лет назад

    @bhuvansimpy007 True, true. I see your point, but it's also pretty convenient. There's no hassle of carrying the groceries around when you can just have it later when you get home. Maybe the customers have a lot on their plate and don't have time to stop home and put there groceries away before they spoil in the heat or the cold.

  • @a8ftdyha4

    @Lirankn because.. people are on their way to work. millions of people use the subway everyday. it's convenient to be able to buy a few things, go to work, and come home to have them delivered at your door. in a busy work day this is convenient. there are of course still all the regular grocery stores. this is just on the go commuter shopping.

    @markothevrba it's not pointless. it would be in other parts of the world like... the states where.. everything is slow and dull. In Korea, millions of people use public transport... and the subway is a big part of peoples days so while they are there, its convenient to pick up a few things to have delivered by the time you get home. Also, that way you don't have to lug around groceries.

    @jun08548 hey mate, i did understood the concept & thats why I said this can be done from any Internet available device from anywhere so called Internet shopping, no point of just coming to the store & scanning the barcodes & somehow at some points you have contradict your own statement.
    "for those who have no time to go shopping at the supermarket and can easily do it while they are waiting for the subway to arrive or vice versa"
    I will take out my tablet & so the shopping

    @badboykilroy you people are ignorant. millions of people use the subway in seoul everyday. it just makes it more convenient while you're there. you get what you need, don't have to lug it around, and by the time you finish your work day and come home you'll have your groceries. It's the kind of people like you who can't quite grab this concept since you live in a slow paced rural place. This works in Korea...

    Not everyone has a car, so the pick up in store is not an option for everyone and some items you need the same day. it can be an inconvience to go to the store, because you have other things going on or it is just so freaking far away then you have to haul all that stuff back. It would be great for last minute Gifts, have it sent to your house so you don;t have to carry it with you. I think this whole service is promising. It will be improved, this is just a beta it will be fine tuned in the end
