I'm 69. Steely Dan my favourite band of all time. Brooklyn Charmers are amazing. Actually better than the Dan live. Fagan's voice doesn't hack live performance.
Liked & subscribed. Although I don't disagree with your point, Edward, that it's good to have current bands playing this song, I don't thing it needs to be kept alive. It's as fresh as when it was recorded in 1973, and way too vibrant to need life support.. It's a classic. and the Brooklyn Charmers do a tremendous job in making it accessible to younger ears. (I recommend this performance as being a jumping off point for those new to "My Old School", because the original benefits from a much fuller sound with it's horn section.) ruclips.net/video/Sq8OU-7JDFA/видео.html
I love this arrangement, especially when the band stops for the riff between 3:38-3:40 ... I can't get enough of it!!! Everyone should play it this way 😲
When my wife and I saw Steely Dan play this on a warm Sunday night at the U. of Toledo in April 1974, this is exactly how it sounded. They did that tour with no horn section or female backing vocalists.
This song is the best evidence of how complex Steely Dan songs really are. The arrangement, the chord and note progressions, the gaps, and which ones they fill. To duplicate this song requires huge cojones. These guys are unbelievable in their approach. I am particularly impressed by the lead guitarist. He not only plays homage to the Skunk, but he adds his own twists to make the solo his. The rest of the band are simply fantastic.
At 72. I've played this 1000+. But it's rare when u find 2 lead guitarists who are more interested in the integrity of the music than competing ego"s. And when they do, you get the fabulous performance you see here. Well done lads. B well done. N3ZRR
I'm 67 ... Loved the original Steely Dan and would never have thought it possible for a band to cover it as well as these immensely talented muso's. Bravo! Your folks will be proud of you!😊
I got to see this band a few years back when they played in East Windsor, CT. I got to talk with the organ player before the show. I told him that I had a Boston terrier named Josie and he said that he once had a cat he named Josie.
Oh man. I'm THRILLED!! When the part about "California tumbles into the sea" was coming up, I was wondering who was going to do the horn tumble riff. THE WHOLE BAND DID IT!! That's fantastic that you realized that was such an important figure, so important that the whole band stopped and did it together!!! I was bowled over! I love the way you guys work out alternative endings to the fade out. You are all such frigging great musicians.
My brother introduced me to Steely Dan when I was 7(1972) he was 15. They are still our fave band. We got to see them in 2000. It was a dream come true. How utterly wonderfully talented you are. I cannot thank you enough. You’ve made me quite emotional ❤❤❤❤❤🇬🇧🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Steel Dan is such a hard band to play covers especially with guys like Larry Carlton doing such complicated lead guitar solos. Congratulations on such an amazing performance.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I love your dedications to the Steely Dan craft(which is not easy). Your cover inspired me that it can be done. Get the right people and magic can happen. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with us.
You guys are from heaven! All your covers are so authentic - you get the complexity and nuances that make you want to keep listening to Steely Dan after 40+ years! Donald and Walter would be so impressed and flattered....
Just witness the Brooklyn Charmers live and in person in Pittsburgh today and was simply overjoyed by the incredible musicianship by the entire band. Their videos, while addictive and enjoyable, do not do the band justice. Do whatever you can to see them live and to support them otherwise. I was like a giddy youngster meeting them. Just phenomenal and I’m on cloud nine! Thanks for what you do! - LZ
I was disappointed that the camera didn't zoom in on the bass when he was playing those fantastic runs. As much as the guitars, keyboard, and drums were excellent, I was knocked out by the bass. PS Haven't seen this video for a few years now and it's still great.
Scary good. It was just one of the pillars of my existence. Nobody could ever duplicate Steely Dan. You guys have crumbled that. What is really scary is dare I say it, better!?
Looking forward to hearing this done "live". Accurate and tight with a phenomenal guitar outro and some magical syncopation at the end to wrap it all up. NICE!
I purchased Can't Buy a Thrill album in my home town (in England) in 1972 from 'Some Kinda Mushroom' record store and have loved SD and followed them ever since. So inventive, original and exciting lyrically and musically with unmatched musicianship and production/recording values. I also watched and admired Nearly Dan 'tribute' band and loved them too. You're injecting new excitement and vitality into the music (as if that were possible) and your sound is true to SD, totally amazing and my spirit is lifted with each new listen. Fabulous work boys, what a truly great band you are, wow, and thank you so much :)
Tremendous! Love that riff at 3:38 as well. Love the guitar work especially at the end. Tasty bass runs throughout and love the drums at the end. A pleasure to listen to. Keep up the inspiring work.
Gotta say, I was skeptical when I saw the lack of horns but you guys totally made it work! Especially with the musical breakdown in the middle. Solid performance.
F**king nailed it! Great job by everyone. So nice to hear faithful high quality renditions of The Dan's brilliant music. 5:33 *BOOM*...and the drummer knew it. Ordered your CD. Many thanks for doing the Steely Dan thang!!!
When this Covid Nasty is done 'n' buried (fall 2021?) I am tracking you dudes down wherever you are playing and I'm gonna obnoxiously applaud the shit out of ya'll. Seeing a younger generation dedicate themselves to covering arguably one of the great music collabs of the 20th Century makes my heart soar!!!
That is some DAMN tasty guitar work! subtle, restrained, and then blistering toward the end, check the drummers smile! There's a real groove going on right there. Thankyou!
My Favorite DAN Song, and you guys did it Righteous! You guys got " the Sound" even without horns and backup singers......and you fill all the Space in the song with a sweet tight groove!
Such a fine idea to do the Dan stuff really, really well. Not likely for this volume of fantastic music/songs to come along thus, recreating magic for a new generation is a gift. The Dan's body of work doesn't seem to be something at all endangered from the standpoint of some group emerging as a pier. What group or genre could approach their accomplishments? Rap music is the epitome of an oxymoron. I describe it as: rhythmic shit talking to the accomnameint of very painful noise. There just doesn't seem to be any likely emergence of the volume of brilliant/moving tunes as Wally and Don created. Hats off to this creative venture.
I’m 66 listening to Steely Dan for over 45 yrs I you guys love the sound n keep it alive for the younger dudes Bravo! Great work!!!!!!
Bravo fellas! The guitarist had quite the challenge covering Skunk Baxter but he PULLED IT OFF! Totally AWESOME cover of a Steely Dan classic

I've seen the real McCoy Steely Dan in concert about 6 times. I was surprised that Fagen didn't replace Becker initially after his death.
I love this arrangement, especially when the band stops for the riff between 3:38-3:40 ... I can't get enough of it!!! Everyone should play it this way 😲

Everything about this is incredible, but especially the guitar playing.
Nailed it boys . Good to see young fellas doing the classics

Any Major Dude would dig this!!!

Thats one of my favorite all-time riffs!

I'll say it again,,,what a fantastic ending! I think I played it 37 times!
I love the stop-time after "sea." And the guitar solos are among the best (and overlooked) in the Steely Dan catalogue. Awesome.
Fatten up that dude on the LP and get him some overalls. He deserves to be the whole package! (Denny)
1 dislike? Dude must be stone deaf. Awesome stuff. Subscribed.
It was Donald Fagen.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I love your dedications to the Steely Dan craft(which is not easy). Your cover inspired me that it can be done. Get the right people and magic can happen. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with us.
One of my favourite Dan songs. It works without horns. Great job.
Simply amazing
Better than original. Great cover 👍🎷
There are 'Cover bands'...and , then , there appears to be this guys!.
I have heard this song covered more times that I can count but this is far and away the best one.
You guys are from heaven! All your covers are so authentic - you get the complexity and nuances that make you want to keep listening to Steely Dan after 40+ years! Donald and Walter would be so impressed and flattered....
3:38
HOLY SHIT!!!
THAT WAS FUCKIN' AWESOME!
Just witness the Brooklyn Charmers live and in person in Pittsburgh today and was simply overjoyed by the incredible musicianship by the entire band. I like that the guitarist adding some of his own.....
3:38 goddamn that blew my socks off amazing stuff guys!
2 faux endings! I love it! That song is a full aerobic workout on the lead guitar player. Awesome job all!
A+++
Wow...just wow...not as much "edge" as SD, but excellent in its own right...
To even attemt a SD cover... ya gotta have a big set. THEY NAILEDIT! All at once too!
Looking forward to hearing this done "live". Accurate and tight with a phenomenal guitar outro and some magical syncopation at the end to wrap it all up. NICE!
The cleanest of all covers on this song.
I purchased Can't Buy a Thrill album in my home town (in England) in 1972 from 'Some Kinda Mushroom' record store and have loved SD and followed them ever since. Need a horn section fellas.......you guys are almost there!!!
WOW
Well I have to say that was extremely good
Tremendous! Love that riff at 3:38 as well. Love the guitar work especially at the end. Tasty bass runs throughout and love the drums at the end. A pleasure to listen to. Keep up the inspiring work.
You guys are awesome!!! The guitar tone was spot on!
Just great! I adore Donald Fagan but your voice is so beautiful!
That is outstanding
Wow ! Without horns even . Love it
Very nice indeed
Hi from UK....Superb band,..steely Dan....great stuff!
Maaan Colin is channeling Fagen 100% here, amazing work guys.
Love how you guys are attacking these songs without horns. End drums and false endings were great.
It takes quite a bit to play Steely Dan tunes, and to play them well. You guys nailed it.
Gotta say, I was skeptical when I saw the lack of horns but you guys totally made it work! Especially with the musical breakdown in the middle. Solid performance.
Amazing. I wonder how many hours would take to learn the lead guitar.
phenomenal , only started listening to steeley dan a year ago

By far one of my favorite covers . You guys rock this song . The voices are great for the song dare I say its perfect.

Grew up with steely Dan and love them so much. Good job guys.
Totally took me back to college days in the dorms, where reality was actually fantasy? You guys nailed it .... Amazing!
Holy smokes the git solo at the end was freakin incredible.
Someone set this band on a path they won't ever regret.
F**king nailed it! Great job by everyone. So nice to hear faithful high quality renditions of The Dan's brilliant music. 5:33 *BOOM*...and the drummer knew it. Ordered your CD. Many thanks for doing the Steely Dan thang!!!
You're all amazing.

Perfect unison bends last solo.
These guys are great! I've never been much of a fan of tribute bands, but now I have to reconsider. Guitar work is amazing.
Top notch gentlemen!
So much I could say guys, BRAVO, but maybe the Best surprise I heard was the SOUND of your Floor Tom Tom, @ 5:58 and @ 6:05. !

Great job, it took me back to those Steely Dan days!
