There's a great story behind the guitar solos on this song. On Dec. 4, 1966 The Yardbirds played two shows at Lima, Ohio's Springbrook Gardens Teen Club (you can Google the show poster). NYC native Elliott Randall, then a 19 year-old guitar teacher at the local Custom Percussion Music Store, attended the show and introduced himself to lead guitarist Jimmy Page. Less than six years later Randall would compose and play these iconic solos on "Reelin' In the Years" that Page would famously rate "12 on a scale of 10" and say changed his whole approach to guitar solos.
I had heard some kind of third or fourth generation quote that this was one of Jimmy Page’s favourite guitar solos, thanks for putting it all together for me.
@@sixstringsolution I was a 15 year-old Ohio farm kid living just 20 miles west of Lima when The Yardbirds played that concert (minus guitarist Jeff Beck who had guit the tour and returned to England). In the fall of 1965 I had seen another future Steely Dan session player -- Rick Derringer and his band The McCoys -- perform at the Van Wert, Ohio fairgrounds. Many decades later I watched RUclips interviews where Elliott Randall discussed his time in Lima, and his encounter with Jimmy Page. What I don't know is whether Randall and Derringer ever met up during that mid-'60s time period, before they both became Steely Dan session players in the 1970s.
I live in Rhyl North Wales... There's 4guys here play every Thurs at the Imperial hotel..best musicians I have ever watched..they play this perfect vocally and instrum...look them up called the imperials a jam band...
As a rule, I don't have much of an opinion on covers (or tribute bands), but these guys are an exception to that. This is fantastic. I've heard so many people attempt to cover SD, and some pull it off very well. The exception is usually no one gets Fagan's voice, because it's so unique. Colin does it better than anyone else I've heard. Bravo.
Hey you should seriously check out Leonid & Friends - Chicago covers, and more. Mindblowing: ruclips.net/video/P_8aZZ9d_EA/видео.htmlsi=IrrMpaPF2iljV5BI
I’ve been a Dan Fan since I bought my first album in 1972 with my lawn-mowing money. You guys do them EXTREME JUSTICE, and sound incredible. Very tight, lots of sus’s, flats and triads, just like you’d hear Larry Carlton play...very nice! Surely Becker is looking down and is very proud....
Love bands that have a Les Paul and a Strat at the same time! This cover raised the hair on the back of my neck! Rhythm section tight as hell! Vocals and keys sublime! Guitarists highly skilled! You guys ROCK! 🤘🤟🤘🤟🤘🤟
I've just stumbled upon this video right now after searching for a cover so I can learn this song. At the same time I was doing something else on the PC (work related)...well, I just had to stop what I was doing and watch this. Truly Gob Smacked! Blown away. The musicianship here is on another level. This is one of my fathers favourite songs, I have to learn this now and also show him this video! You guys would clean up playing this stuff in my home city of Manchester. Get your plane tickets booked! Incredible.
Very well done. I've seen thousands of SD covers and you guys bring something completely fresh and exhilarating to the songs. Love all your covers. Keep 'em coming.
This song originally came out from the year I was born, 1972 and you guys did an awesome job on this cover too!! I gotta give my props to the lead guitarist, he totally nailed it!! Great job!!
I'm all about originality in cover tunes and this one totally rocks and the vocals if you kick it up a notch your in Donald Fagen country fo sho still gets a 10 from me
The two guitar players work off each other well. From the various clips here, the bearded one brings a bit more rock & roll edge and the clean-shaven one plays these remarkable, clear, and jazzy runs. Having them sound slightly different but also playing tightly together is a magical thing.
Wow! Just Stunningly good! By each of you! and all of you together! Possibly the most inspiring cover I’ve ever seen/heard! Especially for a song with the details and intricately complex guitar solos that Reeling In The Years has! Kudos! And Thanks! for posting it!
Steely Dan's cover of this is decent I hear. Jesus that was amazing.
James Nichols Funny stuff.
Great comment! Made me smile 😄

the goat!
WOW, These guys are great. Holy smokes, the guitar players are phenomenal!.
Just masterful! Don't even bother to cover Steely Dan if you don't have two hotshot guitar players. Check that box!
Great to see two great guitar players on the same page like this. Fantastic job guys.

I thought you guys were nailing it... then the freaking harmony hit. Primo, my dudes. Haven't ever heard a better cover of SD.

Thank you from the bottom of my Steely Heart. I bought every album as it came out, and I still love the music.
Oh yeah. Happy you are keeping the flame alive for SD. Great job.
Played with passion!
