@@Eyepoke42 It really wasn't valve's fault at all in the first place. Any modders know that if there is an update, a thing or two might break as code changes effect the game some being very necessary
The mods aren’t broken in the same way that Minecraft mods aren’t broken when new versions release. It is not Valve’s responsibility to develop their game according to software created by other people, because that would be impossible. It’s Valve’s responsibility to ensure that these legacy pieces of software (History really) can still be used, which is achieved by allowing backdating the game to the previous version(s). There is nothing more Valve can or should do to accomodate modding considering they are already developing a new SDK to allow more modding opportunities.
I got the Platinum Pack that came out circa 2002 and have only played that version for the past 20+ years. The fact that the old, original menu is a novelty blows my mind :P
FYI in either versions you can toggle between the old models and the HD models by simply toggling a checkbox in the settings. all valve did here is just switch the checkbox to use non-HD models on default. you can enable the HD models in settings if you wish to use them. honestly there is no reason to use the pre-25th version unless you have issues with mods, or hate the menu look.

At least they included the pre-update version of Half-Life as an option in the Beta Builds. :)
all the main menu changes went totally over my head, since i didnt actually own half life on steam until this update released. I've been playing on the 1.0 version that you get off of the original disk this whole time, with a slight mod to make it support higher resolutions.

"When Half-Life came out, it was pretty pixelated" (the textures) This is not true, if you had a 3D accelerator back in the day, you would get texture filtering via bilinear filtering.
4:12 it's not that the game was "pixelated'" and got smoothed out, it's just that the game did filtering by default if you had a graphics accelerator card, and if you didn't, the game would default to software rendering which did not include texture filtering. Same as Quake and GLQuake, except Half Life supported this at launch.
Not many people would know about this "software rendering" concept as 3D or acceleration is something any graphics chip set does today. Back in like 2000 games like Unreal Tournament, Half Life and others had this option to pick Direct3D, OpenGL or Software because 3D cards were still fairly new and expensive. If you did not have a 3D card you could not even select the 1st two options, only Software. @@Eyepoke42
Hey fellas thanks for the views and comments and info! If I got anything wrong let me know. I’m no expert just some guy who really likes half-life! Thanks again!
The statement about the models: They didn't change the models, they just turned the toggle to "off" by default for the HD models. For several years now, the SD and HD models were both available, but until the recent update, the HD models were enabled by default. Now it's the SD. But HD models can be turned on with a single click in the settings.
The HD models and Blue Shift were also made for the SEGA Dreamcast port. But it was ultimately unreleased (it did leak) after the SEGA Dreamcast was discontinued. They just ported it back to the PC so it’s not all wasted.

I tried Half-Life: Day One for the first time yesterday to finally see for myself what it truly originally was. It turns out that even back then, the hud didn't scale with higher resolutions, It was only full scale at the lowest.

I don't think I ever remember the tentacle scene being properly synced. I played the Platinum Pack HL1 dozens of times, and that bit always stood out to me.
See I thought I remember it synced… but i don’t think my memory is that good. Lol For example I watched the movie “the leprechaun” when I was a kid and there was a scene that scared the crap outta me! I rewatched it and the scene never even happened! I was blown away. So I definitely could be wrong 😂😂
@@Eyepoke42 bro i remember exactly the same. i'm CERTAIN that it was in fact synced. i would even go as far as to get into an argument about this. edit: so i'm a bit confused after researching this topic. for some people it always worked in the source version. for others it only works with hd models. then you got people talking about how this never worked, even in the original version. and again other people that remember this working as intented.
With the inconsistency between how different people remember it, even going back to the original version, I wonder if the bug is somehow hardware or renderer related and slowly became more and more prevalent as hardware modernized…. or something weird like that 😂
When Half-Life first came out in 1998 the rendering and the textures weren't restricted to being pixelated (software mode), there was an option to change it to opengl or directx, you only had to use software rendering if you didn't have any of those. Even the 1997 alpha can run with a smooth renderer like nglide.
Did anyone notice a few bugs with this version? For example, when i switch weapons by pressing Q, there is no animation, the weapons just switch instantly. Also, some dialogs end abruptly. In the training room(Hazard Course) when you reach the end of the course and mess with the security door, tease the door to get the message "Access is denied", if you do that enough times, and then try to use the security guard to open the door, he doesn't do it. No sequence where he approaches the door and opens it. This never happened to me in the original version i played like 100000 times, and i never played HL Source, god forbid 😂. This game is still not polished, but it looks good. And i kind of like the swinging mechanic, i am getting used to it. Other than that, the game looks good, im always trilled when Valve publishes anything related to HL.
I didn’t know of these! But I did forget to put in the glitch where some boxes float now! I totally forgot to include that! Idk why I did that! 🤦♂️ It’s pretty funny tho!
I noticed the beam in Unforeseen Consequences (the one that blows up the door) doesn't play any sounds after the door's destroyed, and the scientist hanging off the ladder in Office Complex doesn't say anything except for his falling death scream when he, well, falls.

The textures in Half-Life didn't get "smoothed out" over time, texture filtering was present since say 1 for anyone that used the OpenGL renderer. The difference is that in ~1998 much more people would've played it with software rendering, which didn't filter textures. Also - The scientist being dragged away by the tentacle wasn't synced since day 1 either. I think the only version where it was synced was in HL:Source, believe it or not.

Also in the 25th anniversary update is giving the game Full Controller Support and a Steam Deck Verified status. Now the game has proper joystick movement control, like you're walking when you slightly tilt the left stick and run when you push the stick all the way. You can now navigate the menu using controllers. And for controllers with gyroscopes, they have a controller layout specifically used for gyro control. It's binding the mouse input to the gyroscopes, so you can move the mouse when moving the controller by its rotation.
I love how old PC fps games have been getting updates for their anniversaries by making them more compatible with modern PCs while given them a fresh coat of paint that can be disable if you want the true authentic experience. I hope this happens with more games, assuming the rights either belong to the original devs or devs we can trust that won't screw it up.
Has anyone else noticed the difference in strafing? Now your head tilts the way you're strafing, it didn't do that before. Makes me feel like I'm playing Quake.
if you want to make it so you don't tilt while strafing, type this in console: cl_bob 0 cl_bobcycle 0 cl_bobup 0 sv_rollangle 0 if you are getting sound delays: // sound for new engine _snd_mixahead 0
I may be thrown into exile for this, but I first downloaded and played half-life when it was free and updated, and I’m going to be real here, it looks amazing.
I'm glad they really made it look like the original with the MUCH nicer Menu and even allowing us to disable Texture filters. Game looks much sharper this way (i always hated that filtering) and even the OG weapon models are back. it's only OG with a Glock and not with a Beretta. It just sucks that the music is still only MP3 files and no lossless FLAC. It's also nice to see the "Half Life - Uplink" demo being added as well because it has never really been available officially on steam as far as i know. And the Demo had a completely different story and shows levels and dialogs that are not in the final game. Something that totally confused me back then. It's kinda like "Half Life² Lost Coast". Sadly the Uplink demo has suddenly no german dialogs anymore. The NPCs are just mute....Even though the demo HAD a german version with german audio.
One thing I loved in this update is that they restored screen tilting feature, where taking fall damage or strafing left and right would result in the player's screen being tilted slightly, which was removed on build 1.1.0.8.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THIS, it made me so angry when he kept saying that the original models weren’t in the game before the update. The funny thing is, before the update, the advice everybody would give you before playing half life was to turn off the hd models.
@@3DFellaalso the texture filtering thing was in the previous build too. You just had to switch from 3D acceleration to software rendering.
@deadturret4049 I didn’t think of this because I never had anything good enough to run it. So I just spaced it and assumed everyone played it that way 😂

True! 😂😂
I remember when my and my brother first played a copy of HL on a cd my dad had. I remember seeing the original Valve intro and being kinda creeped out.
Completely forgotten that moment since the steam version never had it. Seeing the original intro again brought me straight back to 20 years ago.
Being born 94, I wasn't too old when I got to play HL1 with my neighbour. Their dad worked as IT-support for a big company so he brought home computers. We played so many hours multiplayer on HL1... But always when I fired up the game I closed my eyes due to being scared for that screen :ppP
i dont think the mods not working properly is valve's responsibility but more the responsibility of the modders.
You know what? That’s a good point! If that’s the case a lot of mods will never be fixed 😂😂
That's true. It's still very unfortunate, however, since a lot of the mods were made 20 years ago and nobody's gonna be updating them now.
Except that most HL mods were released between 1999-2005 and the creators are long gone from the HL1 modding scene.
Tentacle scientist is synced now.
I got the Platinum Pack that came out circa 2002 and have only played that version for the past 20+ years.
The fact that the old, original menu is a novelty blows my mind :P
Oh wow! 😂😂 that’s hilarious!
Thanks for the info! 🔥 and yea that is true! But honestly you gotta play the mods!
Is there a mod list that shows which is supported by the new version and which is not?
It's nice they made the "HD" models off by default, the original models are just much more fitting to the original game.

Yeah, the patch notes say "Fixed the inability to launch Half-Life: Blue Shift and Day of Defeat, as well as many other mods", and "While we work on improving mod support", so I think they realised they screwed up a little and are trying to fix it.

They fixed the tentacle scene now
Sweeeet!! 🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺🪩🪩
4:12 it's not that the game was "pixelated'" and got smoothed out, it's just that the game did filtering by default if you had a graphics accelerator card, and if you didn't, the game would default to software rendering which did not include texture filtering. Same as Quake and GLQuake, except Half Life supported this at launch.
ahhh ok yea that makes a lot more sense, way more then whatever i said LOL!
@@Eyepoke42
You forgot that now half life have a full controller support. They didin't make it verified on steam deck for nothing

The statement about the models:
They didn't change the models, they just turned the toggle to "off" by default for the HD models. For several years now, the SD and HD models were both available, but until the recent update, the HD models were enabled by default. Now it's the SD. But HD models can be turned on with a single click in the settings.
Blue Mesa was the game that came with the HD models for the game. They also changed the MP5 to a M16 or M4 which was a bit weird.
You probably meant Blue Shift
The HD models and Blue Shift were also made for the SEGA Dreamcast port.
But it was ultimately unreleased (it did leak) after the SEGA Dreamcast was discontinued.
They just ported it back to the PC so it’s not all wasted.

When Half-Life first came out in 1998 the rendering and the textures weren't restricted to being pixelated (software mode), there was an option to change it to opengl or directx, you only had to use software rendering if you didn't have any of those. Even the 1997 alpha can run with a smooth renderer like nglide.
Hmmm.....I recall Glide (which did not last long) being only used by 3DFx cards ?

Hey thanks! I appreciate that! 🤝
It’s pretty funny tho!
I noticed the beam in Unforeseen Consequences (the one that blows up the door) doesn't play any sounds after the door's destroyed, and the scientist hanging off the ladder in Office Complex doesn't say anything except for his falling death scream when he, well, falls.
@@Eyepoke42 the box floating thing actually happened to me a few minutes ago while I was playing On A Rail.
