    NOTE: This is an updated version of a previously released video. The original release stated that attacks would be hindered by the Grabbed condition, which is not true because attacks DO NOT have the Manipulate trait. No other content has been changed from the original release.

    I feel like you're secretly some kind of psychic God of the Dark Tapestry. My players and I were JUST having a discussion on Grab/Grapple on Sunday, and I have been flubbing this ability hard. Thank you (again) for the excellent content!

    The Grab thing is one of the things i have issues with in PF2 rules wording. I think it should say "1d6 plus can [1-action-symbol] Grab". That's all that's needed to clear it up and make it great and clear and perfect.
    Now if they'd just print focus spells with the feats that grant them rather than making you thumb back and forth through 300 pages, too, we'd be 90% of the way to perfect ease of use...

    Super funny, we ran into the "plus Grab" in my second ever session as a player last summer. Turned a fairly easy Hyena encounter into a bloodbath where my barbarian dwarf was nearly pulled of into the woods to be devoured in a single round of combat due to the free actions, drag and pack tactics, and no armor being attacked during long rest, all combining for a deadly scenario.

    This series is a good idea. The way P2e handles monster abilities was one of the hardest things to grasp as a new GM. Took me awhile to find them and some still confuse me.

    Hey I just want to thank you for all your work. I'm a long time D&D 3.5/PF1 player/gm and the move to PF2 has been a bit rough for me. Re-learning a lot of the rules has been a struggle and I've found your videos extremely helpful in helping me recontextualize a lot of my knowledge and has greatly smoothed out the moment to moment play time for myself and for my players.

    wow this is really good. Just wandered here wanting clarification on Escape and got it on Grab too. odd but you just use an action with a hit and grabbed. thanks!

    I love your posts and they've helped me a lot with my Pathfinder 2e characters. Can you answer a quick 'grey area' question? Since the Grapple action under Athletics has the Attack trait, does using it against a flat-footed opponent grant a -2 circumstance penalty to their Fortitude DC when it's used on them? I have a Monk who trips opponents (making them flat-footed) and then grapples them. Thanks for any input you might have.

      I don't believe so. Flat-footed only applies to Armor Class, not to any other DCs.

    The worst part of moving monster abilities to the glossary is that it’s not even clear that “Grab” is a monster ability, given how innocuous it is as a term and how easy it is to confuse with the player ability “Grapple.” It’s purely out of luck that I even thought to look “Grab” up and wouldn’t blame a GM for not doing so.

      Not to mention if you are like me and only bought the Bestiary Cards (not the books), you have to search online. None of the universal monster abilities are in the core rule book.

    Thank's a lot for your videos. you are a light in the darkness. i've a question: Astrademon can make a jaws attack with "and Grab", but astrademons don't have the athletic ability. How can i calculate the dc for an escape attemp?

    I am wrestling with these conditions. As far as a understand it: Grabbed is a condition monsters can achieve as a result of an attack. Players can grapple to achieve the grabbed condition against NPCs. What are the limitations to the player that is doing the grappling? A monk character claims they can grapple then use Flurry of Blows against there grabbed opponent. I say no, how can you continue to hold someone if you are going all out on attacking? To me, if you are restraining someone enough to cause them to be flatfooted, that is all you are doing.
    For example: Someone is using just one hand to hold me and I want to attack them by slicing the arm holding me, you. Why do I need to make a flat check? Their arm is immobilized while it is holding me. I should get a bonus to hit them.
    The way I see it, if a player grapples an NPC and wants to maintain the grabbed conditions, that is all they are doing.
    I should explain that back when I had a badge i quickly learned that restraining someone who did not want to be restrained is one of the most difficult things to do. Even with two people trying to restrain one, the one had the advantage and the two often acquired several injuries.

    Is there a way to pull enemies in pf2e? I think Shove is just pushing? Or can you grab/grapple someone and pull them back with you (move them with you)? I ran into a situation where the enemy is surrounded but has high AC. I wanted another PC to flank, but there was no space behind it, so I thought maybe pull it instead. Then I learned that there are no rules about that it seems.

    Me and my players are curious if there is any system or mechanic for trying to move a grabbed target somewhere with you? As far as we can tell its not possible because of the grab RAW. some rare creatures have this ability but that's an exception (ex Jungle drake)
    They asked to come up with a homebrew solution:
    I simply changed it so you can move a creature you have grabbed or restrained at half your speed. Then I added a reaction available to a grabbed creature, it is to "Resist", and so they perform an athletics check against the fortitude DC of the creature that's trying to move them. If they succeed the movement is resisted and they cant be moved for the remainder of that round. if they fail they go along for the ride.
    What are your thoughts?

    One small question, HIP, does the Grab action has the Attack trait? That is, does it count against de MAP? In case the monster decides do Attack, Grab, Attack, is the last attack subject to MAP -10?

      No, the Grab action does not have the Attack trait, so the second attack would be at -5, not -10.

    When the Constrict action on the monster does not list a DC to avoid the constrict damage, how do we calculate the DC? Such as with the Giant Octopus, where it does not list in the bestiary.

      Yeah, this looks like a goof from Paizo. Some people on the PF2 subreddit reverse-engineered other Constrict DCs and determined that they were Hard difficulty DCs based on the monster's level. Based on that, the Giant Octopus would have a constrict DC of 26.

    Question. a black pudding (ooze) has someone grabbed, can it make another pseudopod attack on a different enemy and still have the first creature grabbed since it doesn’t have a defined body with limbs, etc.? Basically can it create more pseudopods from its mass?

      That's the way I've always done it. I think it's largely up to the GM to determine how many pseudopods the pudding has. I would think most would allow at least 2, but it's not defined in the rules.

      @@HowItsPlayed Thanks for your thoughts on it. How I was going to initially handle it having a second pseudopod attack but then was thinking maybe having it as an elite creature to get it. Most encounters are for 4 players but there is 5 in mine.

    So, i have had this come up and handled it okay. Player/bad guy kept breaking grapple. But, this lead to two questions:
    1. Can a PC (at this time Vine Leshy) Constrict a grabbed target? (If so how much damage does it do?)
    2. Can multiple gabs effectively restrain a target?

      1. Not unless it has an ability that allows it to Constrict (which I do not know of any).
      2. There's nothing in the rules that says "x-many grabs creates the Restrained condition", but the GM is definitely within their right to impose Restrained if they believe it is appropriate.

    Is the creature doing the grabbing or the grabbed creature flat-footed? This came up in 1 of our games.

      The monster doing the grabbing is not flat-footed, but the creature which is grabbed is flat-footed.

    Help! :( can greater constrict knock out any creature without taking the Hit points to 0?

      Yes, as long as the victim fails their fortitude save. But once they succeed, they are immune to this for 1 minute.

    The Blue-Ringed Octopus has an attack that lists:
    Melee (1 action) arms +6 [+1/-4], Effect Grab
    Since Grab isnt listed in the damage entry (the attack does no damage), and is instead listed as an effect:
    Would you rule that the Octopus can grab a creature in the same action that it attacks, or would you rule that the Octopus still needs to spend an additional action for grab?

      I would rule that when it hits with that attack it grabs (no need for an additional action). Although I kind of wish they had said "Effect: Improved Grab", just to be extra clear.

      @@HowItsPlayed Thanks! That matches how I would rule it as well.
      This all came up in a discussion about whether creatures can ready an action to grab an enemy (they usually can't since grab takes an additional action). I was considering giving some enemies such an ability in a campaign with flying PC's. This way the creature (like a wolf or panther) could ready an action to grab a character when they come close, similar to how an animal in real life might prepare to pounce on a bird that is pestering them.
