    Would have been nice if he could’ve filmed slower when showing which way he’s flipping the gears with the Crescent wrench. Makes it helpful for people who are putting together a car and need to know when Installing a shifter.

      J.M. go to the setting icon (gear) and choose what speed you want to play the video at. You can slow it way down or speed it way up. FYI

    If there is linkage on the side it’s a side loader. Top loader all shifts are done through the top.

      Top Loader name derives from the removal top access plate.Single rail shifter screws in from the top and has an aluminium case.

    What about the T & C overdrive "RTS" not RUG or SROD where the shift mechanism is built into the top cover.

    Question: so I just finished rebuilding my 4 speed toploader. It is in same stage as one in this video. I noticed when u switched to first gear , third and reverse u had to push in from the output shaft because of the "play" . I have to do the same thing on mine. The output bearing slides out about 1/16 inch and if u don't hold it in flush it won't shift properly. Does anyone know if this is normal or am I missing a spacer or washer ? Or does it remain flush once the tranny is installed and driveshaft installed. Any help or comments I would truly appreciate !!

    Steven what gear oil?

    • @scarto3887
      @scarto3887 3 года назад

      they recommend 80/90 gear oil.For years i've used 50% gear oil 50% Auto trans oil which equates to 1 quart (litre) gear oil 1 quart (litre) auto oil .You'll really notice how easy the trans will shift when it's cold.

    • @williamstidham2163

      75/90 only, you will cook these with anything else,

    How is a 4 speed top loader different than a standard 5 or 6 speed stick?

    • @legostar55
      @legostar55 5 лет назад

      No overdrive. Most of the time 5 speeds have one overdrive gear and 6 speeds have 2. Sometimes you can have 5 speeds with no overdrive but very rarely.

    • @deeremeyer1749

      @@legostar55 "Most of the time" means nothing. Most PASSENGER CAR 6-speeds have two OD positions/ratios while LIGHT TRUCK 6-speeds typically have a "granny low" position/ratio that is unsynchronized and designated "L" on the shift pattern or a lower than "normal" but synchronized First/1 position/ratio OR an "extra" underdrive position/ratio that makes them more of a "close ratio" transmission than the 5-speed OD transmissions they "replaced" so the pattern is 1-2-3-4-5-6/OD or L-1-2-3-4-5/OD.
      Typically the LATTER is found behind gasoline engines and the former behind diesels.
      The FEW factory 6-speed manual passenger cars have high-performance pushrod V8 or V10 engines with a lol of low-end torque sufficient to "pull" a second OD position/ratio along with a "lower than normal" 1st gear roughly analogous to "granny low" in a light truck transmission and relatively "low" rear axle ratios also on par with many light trucks made even "lower" by the significantly shorter/smaller rear tire diameter/circumference.
      The list of passenger car AND light trucks models/years/powertrain packages with 6-speed transmissions AND that can make good, efficient and practical use OF THEM is shorter than the list of "factory" vehicles/models/years/powertrains they have been standard or optional equipment in/for/with.
      Ford especially and basically exclusively has put 6-speeds in vehicles that can't possibly get any or all of the benefits out of them compared to a "5-speed" and as has always been the case, the few real "Ford" transmissions of the "modern era" are overrated failure-prone boat anchors overhyped for "unique" design features that supposedly make them "superior" but are in fact made necessary by INFERIOR "engineering" when Ford's "suppliers" are unwilling/unable to meet Ford's "demands" in a practical and profitable "partnership". And generally those "unique" features are nothing remotely new in/to the "auto industry" and USUALLY they're long "obsolete" by the time Ford "adopts" them and sells them as "new and improved" to Ford's core group of "loyal customers" who are generally only buyers of "vintage" Ford products and generally "first-time buyers" drawn to Ford by "low cost" and "commonality" and Ford's biggest "investment" in it's products by far called "marketing".
      Ford or rather the "Ford family" has a far larger financial "stake" in the "industries" of automotive advertising and automotive publishing and automotive recycling than in automotive engineering and manufacturing.

    • @deeremeyer1749
      @deeremeyer1749 4 года назад

      @@legostar55 UNLESS it's one of the MAJORITY of "Ford toploaders" that's a "3-speed" OR a "3-speed w/OD" transmission instead of an actual "4-speed manual" with a "4th gear" after 1, 2 and 3 instead of an "OD".
      There are also essentially ZERO 5-speed or 6-speed "toploaders" which aren't also TOP SHIFTERS with an actual "stick" instead of a "shift lever".

    • @legostar55
      @legostar55 4 года назад

      @@deeremeyer1749 Uh, How about a Nissan Versa or Kia Soul. Both have 6 speed manuals with enough power to use them. I check both have double overdrive. As well as the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS. All those don't have V8s or V10s. And really all I was saying was that 95% of the time 5 speeds have one overdrive gear and 6 speeds have 2. But there exist 5 speed transmissions with no overdrive and 2 overdrive's. Also 4 speeds with one overdrive (in a manual). And 6 speeds with 1 overdrive or none (formula 1 cars are like that).

    • @deeremeyer1749
      @deeremeyer1749 4 года назад

      @@legostar55 Those are TRANSAXLES. And the Versa no longer has a 6-speed manual option while the Soul has it as the standard transaxle option on the BASE model vehicles only. It's not available with any "high performance" engine/powertrain. And despite having THREE "overdrives" the overall final drive ratio is 4.563:1. That's a lower overall gear ratio than has ever been available in any "heavy-duty" 3/4- or 1-ton light truck with NO overdrive since the original Dodge "Power Wagon" based on the WWII Dodge WC 3/4-ton 4x4 military chassis/trucks were "canceled" 60+ years ago. And those had 90-HP 230 cubic-inch flathead inline six-cylinders and 9.00-16 tires roughly 35 inches in diameter.
      So clearly those "cute utes" do NOT have sufficient power to get the benefits of multiple overdrives. They're also both known for manual transaxle "issues". Particularly the Nissans.
