In today's video we go back and look at the history of Rage of the Dragons for the Neo Geo Arcade and home console. This 2002 title was at one point in time planned to be a Double Dragon game, but the developers were unable to acquire the licensing rights. What Double Dragoness is left of this cult classic?

It looks like it would be, just can't beat that arcade cabinet feel. Even if a game is ported "flawlessly" to consoles or PC it's still just not the same. When i was younger a cousin of mine somehow ended up with an old Double Dragon arcade cabinet and for whatever reason it could only run the first two levels of the game and even though we collectively had all the Double Dragon games that had been released at the time we still played those 2 levels Way more on the cabinet than any of the console games, and this was after PS2 had come out so there were plenty of other options for NES, SNES and so on.
One of these days i would like to get one of those cabinets with all the different games\emulators on it. It's probably the closest i'd get to owning a legit arcade.

@@deathsnitemaresinfullust2269 yes there's nothing like a real cabinet even if it's running emulators. The controls just feel better and it feels authentic.
Making your own isn't too difficult or expensive either, just depends on how much work you feel like putting into it.
I've built 6 myself so far.

i have absolutely no clue as to why i haven't thought of just making my own cabinet 🤦♂️ i've worked as a general contractor for both commercial and residential property managers so i have the knowledge and skill to build whatever i want to a certain degree, and i usually enjoy that kind of work especially when it's something i'm making for myself.
i would imagine the components needed for the controls probably don't cost too much either? Man i really can't believe i haven't thought of doing that before, i'm always modifying stuff to fit my needs or looking for something to build myself at home.😅🤔
😐There's So Many ideas in my head right now for what it could be, maybe a raised two person bench to go along with it, Or build it to accommodate the height of my most comfortable chair? Oh, a base that i can adjust by stacking or removing sections to accommodate whatever.

Evoga's story is so interesting that could make an good premise for a movie, this game is one of the most entertaining fighting games of the Neo-Geo.
Double Dragon well at least the first one had a plot so simple, it still baffles me how they messed that up when they made the movie🤦🏾♂️

The last boss is one of the most difficult in the history of SNK.

I remember being the only guy that played this when it was in my local arcade back in the day. Remains one of the top games I would love to see get a release on modern consoles.

In my head canon THIS is a Double Dragon game, and probably one of the best, I wish SNK make a sequel to this somehow if they can acquire the rights.
Its because of Evoga, that Angel from KOF exists.
Guys from Evoga challenged some of the SNK staff to some play of KOF when they were there visiting the Evoga office, betting that if the Evoga side would win, SNK would put in an original character from Evoga in the next KOF game. SNK were like sure, no problem. Legend says they stomped the SNK staff playing that KOF.
Deals a deal. Thats where Angel came from, named after the dude who gave em a huge whipping on KOF.
the character already existed, it was due the result of the bet that she was named Angel and end up as "mexican" ;)

Power Instinct/Gōketsuji is one of the (if not the) weirdest fighting game series. Also there's a character based on real world wrestler Reggie Bennet so that seems right up THGM's alley.
There's a special place in my heart for 'My Small Happines' especially with Urami Masuyo in the background singing the song.

I could get to the final boss on one credit, but could never beat the guy. I wish this game got a home port.
Please do that video on the Power Instinct (Gouketsuji Ichizoku) franchise. It was a long running fighting game franchise that spanned atleast 4 different console generations. It never gets the recognition and love it deserves.
Recently discovered the series and absolutely love it. The only one I haven’t been able to play is Groove On Fight…

Great video! I see no one has mentioned the AMAZING jumping Backfist move "Bimmy" is executing throughout most of the clips from the Neo Geo fighting game. (start at 3:14). I know the Dragon Punch is probably the most iconic fighting game move ever... But that jumping back fist has some SERIOUS attitude. That move needs to be reanimated and put into a modern fighting game! 🤣
This needs to be on PS4 like yesterday.

Hi Top Hat Gaming Man. Just got done getting the bells and whistles kicked of me in this game. I grew up playing Double Dragon games, never got to buy expensive Neo Geo. So I never heard of this game until this year surprisedly. This game is great
Back in the day, I really wanted this to be big in the arcades, and while it had some players, it didn't take off, or stick around long enough (as in, wasn't making arcade owners money), especially during the aftermath of KOF2000 and long before SF4. It was pretty well polished - I didn't know the devs were mexican, shout outs to latino america for the passion.

I actually enjoy DD Neo Geo lol.
But Rage of the Dragon is a masterpiece IMO, at least by comparison to every game that came before it.
Power Instinct is an Atlus series, so it's not surprising they would publish a Power Instinct game. If you're going to do Matrimelee I'd say do the entire series, but I don't think anyone ever remembers that series so it might not be worth it.

The name of KOF character angel comes from a mexican programer from evoga, the story it's his beat everybody on KOF and the prize was a character with his name.

Rage of the Dragon is a great Fighting Game, graphics are great, animation is fuild, sound is great, and the gameplay is awesome, simple to pick not to hard to master, with unique gimmicks, it's kind of a hidden gem imo. Thx for covering it.

I got this game for the MVS and is one of the BEST games for double dragon that is NOT double dragon. Just be prepared for a punishingly difficult game and last boss.

The story ends with the second game as far as i am concerned. The GBA Double Dragon was the greatest effort since the second. The rest went through too many changes to the point where it was pretty much unrecognizable.
Double Dragon Neon was also great, it was both a homage/parody to the franchise and the 80's.

@@Hektols neon was garbage. It was too outside the box. Double Dragon was about fighting a gang in the streets. Not in space. DD4 did better justice than neon.
I have the logic or rule (in my mind) that every fighting game has to have the first battle in the arcade mode easy to win so that one can taste the victory and then they can kick my ass if they want.

I've played the mame rom version of the game. It was nice, the tag team combinations were nice, it reminded me of Double Dragons mixed with Rival Schools.
