Explaining Double Dragon IV's presentation requires looking at how the Nekketsu Kunio series has been handled over the last two decades. The Nekketsu Kunio series started with more realistic graphics, and would return to both more realistic as well as higher quality "cartoon" graphics on the SNES, NeoGeo, PS1, and the like. But once the brand was revived, Nekketsu Kunio releases have kept going back to the NES SD style or "enhanced" NES SD style designs. Arc System Works likely felt the same treatment would work for Double Dragon, which arguably saw its own greatest interest during the NES era.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know it had been released, last one I played was neon on I think ps3. But it would definitely have made sense to remake double dragon or 2 in proper HD with no flicker or slowdown. But obviously a continuation of the story… forgetting Rosetta Stone

Wow! Didn't know how much dissatisfaction was out there for DDIV while I agree with the opinion on the graphics the game was supposed to be a return to form after a series of inconsistent sequel's that didn't feel like the original work as the series was passed around to multiple creators and companies. Double Dragon IV felt more like Double Dragon then any of those games (Neon) included. This was no coincidence as the guy who created part IV was Kishimoto the creator of Double Dragon. This was his return to the series after Double Dragon III on Famicom/NES. Double Dragon IV is the official canon sequel to those games like it or not.

NES graphics? If you have any guts, emulate Neo Geo graphics! It's the console that everyone wishes they had, but almost no one did. Okay, the Saturn would make equivalent graphics pretty affordable to everyone, but we still remember that Neo Geo thirst.
My point is, make something we WISH we had back then, not something that's a pale reflection of what we DID have back then!

This game makes more sense if you grew up playing the NES version, which was my case. If you didn't grew up in the late 80s and early 90s, and played the NES version, you won't care for it or understand it. This game seems like it was made for a very specific audience, and definitely weren't trying to please everyone or attract new fans, like Streets of Rage 4. For guys like me, it kinda felt like the proper sequel to Double Dragon 2 on the NES that we never had, aside from the ridiculously hard and flawed Double Dragon 3. Sure it ain't perfect, and it could have been done way better, but for what it is, i don't think its that bad.
Though i can't shake the feeling this would have worked better as a Mini game or an "extra" on either a brand new modern Double Dragon game, or as part of a Double Dragon compilation release.

My argument here would be: there was newer technology, they should not have done the “retro refit” to make this look like a NES. Double Dragon Neon DID take advantage of the technology of the time. Even Double Dragon Advance took that the Game Boy Advance had and made great use out of it. I think I would choose one of these two rather than the 8-bit mess that was DD IV.

@@mr.awesome6011 Shovel Knight's character sprites mesh better with the backgrounds. I don't think the backgrounds were all that more detailed than the characters. Both backgrounds and characters were more detailed than the NES could handle, while at the same time retaining a NES look to them.
By contrast DDIV's backgrounds are as detailed as Shovel Knight's, or maybe even more so, while the characters have been ripped straight out of DDII, and no effort has even been made to touch them up for the higher quality backgrounds.
I still think the game looks quite attractive, but the uneven graphics make it look like a ROM hack.

No enemies from that game return, nor are versions of Billy and Jimmy from that game unlockable (despite the weirdness of 16 bit sprites being in an otherwise 8-bit game, it would have been nice). Around 2006-2007 there was a short video-remake of Double Dragon II (NES) in the page NewGrounds (I forgot the name of the video, sorry). That (flash) short was very popular, and many people asked to have a Double Dragon remake based on that NES style but with the awesome attacks there showed (the drill dive attack from DD4 looks identical to the one in the video). So probably DD4 might have been done based on the popularity of that short, expecting to be as liked as that one, which also seems to have inspired Abobo's Big Adventure. I just purchased DD4 for Switch (I still like my NES DD games), and don't have high expectations, but hopefully will enjoy it. Thanks for the history of DD4.

Can't remember if the game engine was original or made with one of those "game making" programs that were so popular back then. This might be a nice one to cover. If I remember well, this was sort of a 16 bit looking remake of the first 2 DD games from the nes, with some platforming. Great video. I thought this game was pretty good. Much better than the first and third NES games. Even better than the second NES game in alot of ways. The third NES game is not balanced well difficulty wise but is a solid game. Theres alot of different enemies in this game and the survival type mode with all the playable characters was very cool, despite being able to spam certain moves for long periods of time. The game uses modern hardware to really put alot of enemies on screen and the wide screen gives more screen to work with than the old games. The AI is no dumber than previous NES games though. I think it holds up pretty well for being based on those older games. Design wise its a little generic but the gameplay is alot of fun. I also agree that it wouldve been better to have visuals on par with the arcade games or the GBA version which is my favorite beat em up of all time. The NES games were never anything like the arcade games they were based on but were fun for what they were. Still a downgrade gameplay and visually wise from the first arcade game.

Most mock 8-bit graphics commit the cardinal sin of using 4 colors + Transparent, while the NES is usually restricted to 3 colors + Transparent per 8x8 tile. If two sprites are drawn on top of each other, the limit doubles to 6 colors + Transparent, but it would flicker badly from the 8-sprite-per-scanline limit, and possibly exceed the 64 total sprites limit.

DDIV was indeed a disgrace, because it harkens back to 8-bit NES era. That's not the direction we wanted.
Instead, they should've made a sequel to Super Double Dragon, one that also fixes all the issues with that game.

What? I loved the 8-bit NES games so yes, that was the direction I wanted. Who wouldn't want it be designed after the best era in the series? In no way is that a disgrace

The funny thing is I felt DD Neon was more of a disgrace by being less of an beat em up and more like a RPG tbh. I didn't care much for it.
I think DD4 despite it's flaws was probably the most criminally misunderstood game of the generation by critics and fans of the series. It played like DD2, made hotkeys for specials, every single character in the game is playable and the tower while insanely hard is simply survival mode that surprisingly very few beat em ups have had. The music isn't too shabby either even if there aren't as many bangers.

To be honest i never heard of this entry until now. It sucks ArcSys executed this game in such a poor and/or lazy way, but nonetheless still looks fun to a point. I like it has unlockables (I miss that), the gauntlet mode seems nice, I may consider playing this honestly.

I think its called DD4 as its the 4th chapter in the story and not a reboot or remake or spin off or side story. Sorta like Contra 4 on DS even though we had like a half dozen Contra games between 3 and 4. Or Start Wars ep 9 had Rogue 1 and Solo and that Clone Wars movies

DD2 on FC is very popular in Japan to a point that the PCE version is based on it so it is understandable that this game uses DD2 as a base.

Gameplay wise feels like an upgrade of DD2. I played NES DD and then DD 2. Then, played DD4 to compare it. This was all done within the same night and DD4 took the best of both games. The music from DD1 with the art design from DD2.

The NES graphics are not a problem, lot of us played the 8 bit games even more than the arcades! i was so hype of the 8 bit graphics. The main problem are some backgrounds, the music is just "meh", and the gameplay is garbage

I understand why this game got its bad reputation. It could have used a bit more attention to detail and TLC, like having individual beaten-up thug pictures instead of groups built off of one template. Some missions could have felt a little more lively with some more enemies. Or even taking the time to give villains or old heroes their own little mission plots.
That being said, I enjoyed it, especially with the retro versions of the new music, which I think was the best part of the game. The combat is tight and feels like it should, and I love that each character has their own movesets. Abobo is crazy with the new moves they gave him. And the Tower is a nice challenge even if you have to cheese your way through it a bit.

Not a disgrace, but still has the feel of a janky mediocre rom hack. Glad I got it on a Steam sale for like 2 bucks.
The really sore point for me is that when I first heard that Arc System works was going to release a new Double Dragon game, I was absolutely salivating at the thought of a Double Dragon game with Guilty Gear-esque graphics or something similar. Not this passable, at best, glorified rom hack.

Soo...the game is ugly as sin but you had fun unlocking ugly sprites?
This game would of been pretty awesome if it had the art style of the arcade. An this comes from sombody who grew up on the nes version. Nostalgia can't save this lol
