What I loved about the soundtrack is some of the original tracks felt like they were inspired from other belt scrolling brawlers. Case in point, the Level 6 sound "Glad I Am" reminds me a lot of a mashup of two songs from the 1993 Konami brawler Violent Storm: Stage 1's "Who'll Be The Hero?" and Stage 5's "We Are Free." All it needed was the sax solo from the latter.

@Gaylord Focker The fact that their main reason for not liking the game was that they believed beat-'em-ups to be an inherently bad game genre, and that they tried to pass off their opinions as though they were objective facts is what made them ignorant.
Like, I personally don't get much enjoyment out of the first-person shooter genre as a whole, but if I were a professional games journalist and I said that the newest Call Of Duty was bad because it was a first-person shooter and all first-person shooters are inherently bad, then I too would rightfully be laughed at and called an idiot.

Ya even if they only had a full review from one person, they would have a side section with 3 or other reviewers with distinctly different tastes give their opinion in a short statement so players could see how a given title was received by people with different tastes. Even the IGN review would be valid if it was presented as simply being from the perspective of someone who dislikes the genre rather than objective fact and was offset by a couple lines by reviewers who do enjoy the genre, all presented as subjective views that are equally valid.

This game is the best game in the series that I've played. The comparison to Streets of Rage 4 is apt. This game is very similar in how it seems very nostalgic on the surface but the mechanics have surprising depth that reward skilled play. Using the gleam mechanic and rolling and dodging through the stages is extremely satisfying.
I love that it doesn't just draw from Double Dragon but also from '80s culture broadly, I get Big Trouble in Little China vibes from the whole experience.
And my God the music! Jake Kaufman is a wonderful composer, and when I first heard Mango Tango I stopped playing and just listened to how dead on of an '80s track it was. It's still a track I listen to regularly - it is just so incredibly well done.
I know that this game is on Steam but I really think it needs to be rereleased on PS4/Xbox One and playable on new consoles through backwards compatibility. It makes no sense that they would re-release it on Switch and nothing else.

I think the problem is that the tapes/stances are not explained well and not turned on my default, meaning you get absolutely smashed when starting off. Now that I've played it properly (after figuring out the tapes) the games has lots of depth and gets much more enjoyable as you progress. Lots of replay value too!

I've always absolutely loved and adored this game ever since it originally released on PS3. Even the soundtrack is an absolute gem. NEON JUNGLE baby!
You have to go into the game realizing it is more of a Double Dragon/80's parody than an actual DD game. It also can be very difficult if you treat it like a typical button masher beat em up and don't learn now to make use of the dodge roll/gleam system.

I’m not a big fan of WayForward and Arc System Works’ takes on the Technōs Japan games:
    • The look of their games never targets older audiences.
    • Double Dragon Mobile is more faithful than Double Dragon NEON.
    • Double Dragon 4 looks like a glorified fan-game hack of the NES/Famicom classic sequel.
    • River City Girls is River City Ransom that has been given the Ghostbusters treatment, with Kunio and Riki looking like two Gaysian-Hipsters.
The companies that did both Double Dragon and Kunio-kun better justice is SNK and Atlus. Those two should teamed up and owned the rights to Technōs Japan’s games.

The problem with neon (aside from the slow characters and odd models) is what the first guy said, It's basically a parody. Double dragon didn't exist in a vacuum. The cartoon, movie ect. The cartoon especially is more faithful than this games theme. DD is basically a hokuto clone. Neon is more of a weird parody of both double dragons and the 80s. This attempt at the 80s sucks. Because it wasn't how the 80s treated it.
Look at skullmegeddon. That is not a serious character, his very name is not a serious attempt at making a cool name. It's a joke name.
And serious doesn't mean a deep drama. it just means a straight forward presentation with less humour.

Think you might do a full history video on Kunio-kun sometime? You mentioned the franchise in your Double Dragon history video, but I've been researching it a little after playing River City Girls and I'm surprised just how deep that rabbit hole goes, especially including the myriad attempts to localize the franchise during the Tecnos era and all the games we didn't get.

Great video. I remember not liking this game when it came out. I didn't mind the look, It wasn't great but I was cool with the look. Ironically, it was only when I let go trying to compare Neon to it's original two, when I started to fall in love with this game. This game kick ass. I think it was before it's time. We weren't ready yet. It's one if the beat beat em up games ever made.
There's so many games I didn't like until years later. Sometimes it's just that way. Music is that way with me too.

While I didnt like the art style of this game, it grew on me and the game itself was awesome to me. I really enjoyed the RPG style progression that was added in. It gave a different feel to the game and the carryover into the hardest mode with new game plus made the game very addictive. The combat is also fluid and fast. It didnt really feel like a DD to me, but a very enjoyable beat em up.

The game looks awesome, but I'd rather it be an original beat 'em up inspired by Double Dragon than an officially licensed Double Dragon adaptation. The world of Double Dragon is inspired by Mad Max. And you just can't do _Mad Max Neon._ Even the cartoon and live action film adaptations attempted to make their worlds feel post-Apocalyptic. This is just 80s nostalgia cranked up to 11.

I agree that it was pretty bold of them to make the game pretty much a parody and perhaps shouldn't have used the Double Dragon name... but i still loved it for what it was. Neo Contra is another example of a game being chock-full of jokes and at first glance looking like a mockery of it's franchise, and it's also a great game. Sometimes good gameplay + a lot of humor does result in something great, even if very different from preceding titles.

Hated this game due to the art style & especially the limiting, 80's mixtape system that only allowed a single extra move to be useable, at any given time 👎. Man, I usually love Way Forward dev'd games.

If you come into this with a low expectation of, and presumptions about, the typical IGN reader then 3.5/10 is probably reasonable for such a group. For lack of a better term to describe this crowd, how many "dudebros" do you think would enjoy DD Neon? Fortunately in this case, Neon was popular enough amongst more dedicated game fans to enjoy the success it deserves. So lastly I ask no one in particular, "90`s grunge nostalgia version WHEN?!"

This is a problem that I have with gamers who are 30 years old and younger, with no appreciation for anything other than call of duty 18: they think that older games don’t require a strategy or quick fingers or good timing and accuracy. If you right off the bat just run up to the bosses and enemies and just get as many hits in until you die, and that’s ALWAYS gonna get you killed in a beat em up game! I don’t like many new games that are released outside of the open world type games and maybe a few shooters like overwatch but that doesn’t mean that I hate an entire genre or don’t have appreciation for games that are good that I just have no interest in. This was VERY POOR REPORTING by an uneducated extremely biased journalist who didn’t wanna play let alone review the game before he even turned his system on! Who lets this out to represent their website and style of reporting? A VERY irresponsible party that’s who! This shows me that I can only half way trust ign for anything because they do irresponsible journalism and publishing. Remember when Sushi X provided reviews for EGM? That was responsible reporting. He had a VASTLY CONSERVATIVE grading system but he played ALL GAMES and he played them as the games they were. What I mean is, regardless of how much hype surrounded a game and no matter how far a game flew under the radar, he pulled out all of the negative and positive things about that game then weighed them against each other and then churned out a very heartfelt but non biased review that many different types of gamers could rely upon and get a just review of the ACTUAL GAME REVIEWED not a bashing of a genre or the trashing of a specific company. This review by ign is akin to Fox News doing “fair and accurate reporting” on the presidency of Obama or MSNBC doing the same thing about Trump. When you hear about these outlets and the people who they are reporting on, you already know what kind of information you will receive and have a basic slant on which way they will report their information. That’s poor journalism. You could never ever say that about a Walter Cronkite or a 80’s era Tom Brokaw because they were just reporting news and they were doing this to the best of their ability and they tried to keep personal feelings and opinionated information out of their journalism. It was called journalistic integrity and it seems to have gone directly out the window in every area of major mainstream media in the 21st century. The ONLY place that people can now get unbiased information is online and if you don’t find the correct sites that just report the facts, you will find a skewed opinion there as well. It’s really bad nowadays that everyone feels that their opinion deserves to be heard instead of putting oneself to the side to get the actual facts out. People are more concerned with having multiple bodies on their “side” than to be the loner who stands by themselves telling the truth using accurate fact based information which can be checked out and verified. I guess that once you have had a president who was flat out lying to his country to get his way, there’s nothing that can be done to reverse this trend.
