Double Dragon - Good Bad Flicks

  • I just returned from PAXeast and had a major hankering to do an episode on a video game movie. After Super Mario Bros this was the next live action video game movie made and it gets just about as much hate. Yes it is silly but the action scenes are good and the overall flick is very enjoyable. If more people would give it a chance I think they would like it.

Michel Angelo the dystopian future of 2007.
I love how little faith they had, or too much faith in many cases, in the future back in the 80’s and 90’s.
They either had us living in an irradiated wastelands resorting to rape and cannibalism, or flying Corvettes to other galaxies with our android sex models.

The Double Dragon fighting game for NeoGeo is a loose adaptation of this movie. The US stages have the same post-apocalyptic setting, Bimmy and Jimmy transform from their grungy 90s wardrobe into their medallion suits, Abobo looks the same, Shuko is the final boss, there's a stage with digitized pics from the movie, and the cover art has the same medallion (and probably some other details I missed). Way better fighting game than the Van Damme Street Fighter games

He was taking advantage of a time when video game movies were just starting to be looked at more seriously out and was intentionally making them suck. No, I just have an affinity for entertaining movies. Not crap. I recognize the difference between a "good" movie and a "good bad" movie. The animated Titanic movie was awful was bad and I have no interest in watching/reviewing it. Did you even watch the Double Dragon video? I poke fun at it as well as talk about what it did right and wrong. I never said it was perfect, I said it was fun.

I agree this might not be a good movie but it's an enjoyable one! I'd love to have it on DVD someday! I love really good 90s cheesy movies! I use to watch the cartoon as a kid growing up! The one thing from the games I'd like to have seen in this movie if I'm thinking right is at the end one of the brother betrays the other... but that might've been the reasoning behind the possession fight scene!

  • @GoodBadFlicks

As a kid, I loved this movie to death. As an adult I still like it quite a bit actually. I kind of treat movies the way I would a meal, this is like one of those weird things that is something a fast food place gave out as a limited time only that you thought was really awesome for me. Strange, unique, but surprisingly kind of good in it's own ways.
Also worth mentioning is that I liked the Double Dragon cartoon series which was worlds apart from this movie. Though I do have to point out as somebody already has I bet, that the mailman does NOT die from the fall. As an adult, I do have to think that if that guy can survive that fall then surely Satori should be allowed to survive that explosion...

Glad you still enjoyed even though you don't like the movie!
I can understand not liking this one, it is very bizarre. For me, there is a certain charm to it.
Hmmm...Showdown in Little Tokyo was pretty violent so maybe an R rated Double Dragon.

Interesting how many of these I watched on TBS growing up. Starting to think turner couldn't afford better movies.

Looks like they wandered onto the set of The Warriors.

Really? That's great! I'm semi-familiar with Cleveland but only in the past 5 years or so. I'm sure many of the locations they filmed are different now.

This is totally a "rose colored glasses" sort of thing. It's cheesy but fun.
I agree, Showdown in Little Tokyo is more Double Dragon than this was lol.

Also, it was a different time back then. Game movies weren't (and still mostly aren't) taken seriously. As I do enjoy the film I do feel like they overthought it. A good rescue the girlfriend would have been fine.

Why do you pronounce Mario's name as Merio?

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  8 лет назад +10

Because I grew up next to a pizza place called "Mario's" and thats how he pronounced it so it stuck with me.

Yeah, Jimmy fights Billy but he is possessed by Shuko. The movie is so silly but lots of fun. :)
