R.I.P. Raul Julia, your last role was General Michael Bison, but you'll always be remembered by me as Gomez Addams... the movies went to shit without you man, you left us too soon.
Raul Julia said he decided to star in "Street Fighter" after seeing how much his kids enjoyed the game, as a gift to his family. He was a highly acclaimed actor whose talents were suited to more substantial theatre, but he acted in Street Fighter out of love for his family. This was mentioned in another youtube review of Street Fighter.
This is a guilty pleasure for me. The best things in this movie are, Raul Julia as Bison and Zangief as comic relief. *They look at a truck full of explosives getting closer on tv. They look at the security camera, then back at the TV,* Zangief: Quick! Change the channel!" HA HA HA HA!
That was one of the best parts of the movie. I was laughing so hard at that line. Frankly this movie gets more entertaining as the years go by, and it's definitely more watchable than The Legend of Chun Li by miles.
Raul Julia is one of the most charismatic actors who has ever lived, he is the reason I watch this movie. And for the part where Zangief tells them to change the channel is the best.
Tony Knighton They’ve paid homage to other Street Fighter media in the game, like the “Delicious” meme. And the movie is a cult classic, so having a nod to the movie would be nice.
@@tonyknighton4019it wasn't a failure though. It made them decent money. And still makes money to this day. Capcom executives even bring that fact up, still.

Agreed. Even when he was sick and dying, Raul Julia gave a kick ass performance as Bison. It just sucks this was his last film as he had so many other roles to play IMO.
Julia is great in the role, but the character of Bison is weak af and nothing like the game version. Chun Li beats his ass easily and then he barely gets a shot in on Guile during the normal part of their fight. It’s just Guile beating the crap out of him until he gets his weak levitation powers. They should have had him be the ultimate badass and build up to their fight like Bloodsport. The Bison from the Street Fighter anime series or Street Fighter The Animated Movie is how Bison should be portrayed
+Doug Glassman Based on this and her current role in Agents of SHIELD, I think we can all safely assume that the aging process is too scared of her to do anything.

This review was ahead of its time with the movie is being "rediscovered" again. The editing and pacing are on par with current RUclips review videos and it wasn't until I saw an older meme that I realized this video is almost 10 years old. Good stuff.

+Redhotsmasher -- I dunno. Given that the movie is 23 years old now, I think cutting it to PG-13 was the right move. A lot of gamers point to this movie as being "90% of the way there" in terms of the perfect video game movie. Everything with Raul Julia is pure undiluted gold. The "for me it was Tuesday" scene has gone down in film history. And all the other actors and the director also did the one thing almost no one in a video game movie has ever been able to do -- they accepted the crazy premise on its face and gave a damn about turning in a good performance. It's like how some people just don't "get" sci-fi or spend any time at all thinking about "Big Ideas". In order to make bank on adapting a video game into a movie, you have to approach it as a "remake" rather than an "in name only" cash crab the way you would a book or movie. It's going to take a long-ass time before Hollywood realizes they can't get away with thinking about other media as "lesser" media.
Raul Julia had the best performance in the film. He looks weak and doesn't fight much because he was dying from cancer. He passed away around the release.
Good review. Much more insightful than the others who've assessed this film. Raul Julia took the role because his children were big fans of the video game.
Thank God someone finally gets the truth that street fighter is not a terrible movie it's just misunderstood it's absolutely hilarious and intentionally so and so much fun to watch and great action scenes two.

I will say it. Raul Julia deserved an Oscar for that portrayal. It was astonishing and he nailed it. It is truly heartbreaking when you realize he was dying during this.
Love the commentary, intelligent AND funny. And I double love your collection. Some of those , I thought I was like one of the 4 or so who had even seen some of your reviewed movies.
I remember liking this movie a lot when I was younger, but I always felt disappointed that they didn't have the characters utilize more of their titular special moves, in particular the Hadouken
As an action comedy, this movie is absolutely brilliant. Entertaining from beginning to end, with fun characters, and a witty script. As an adaptation, however, it falls well short. It's kind of the opposite of the Japanese made Street Fighter 2 the Animated Movie. A much more faithful adaptation, but not nearly as entertaining. The recently made low budget Street Fighter Assassins Fist, I feel is a good balance of the two films. Faithful, but still entertaining. I highly recommend it.
Okay, I realize that this is an old video and all the comments are from two years ago, but I just wanted to say how glad I am to see this movie get some love. I always saw this movie as a tongue-in-cheek parody of blockbuster action movies, and on that level I'd say that it was pretty good and a lot of fun.
I own the VHS Version of Street Fighter and I can tell you the soldiers that Bison Kills in the Openning don't "Die of Embarassment" but he single-handedly breaks their necks. I don't know why they edited out the neck snapping sound in the DVD version.
I pretty much know everything there is to know about this movie, but I'd still love to see you do an Exploring episode on this. On a slightly happier note to Raul Julia choosing this movie for his kids, when the school did that thing where you have to stand up and tell the class what your parents do for a living, you know Raul's kids felt good throwing shade at other kids' Fireman Dad or Dentist Mom when they mentioned their Dad played the Final Boss of one of the biggest games of the decade. R.I.P.
I agree that Raul Julia's Bison performance was absolutely legendary! I still have the movie on a VHS tape that I've owned for about 20 years or more. Every time I pop it in, I find myself quietly reciting his Shakespearean-like lines as I watch. RIP Raul Julia, and as it said in that title card just before the credits, "Vaya Con Dios".
I remember seeing this with my best friend in the theater and we were so stoked. We were not only huge fans of the SF franchise, but also big Van Damme fans and we thought that it was going to be epic. I didn't expect the film to be so much on the funny side, but I did enjoy it because to me it was awesome to see actors I like in a franchise I spent so much time with. My friend, however, was angry and did nothing but complain about it, primarily due to the lack of seriousness, fights (like you mentioned), and a more important role for Ken (his favorite). I would've liked for the film to be more like the game, but I can't complain. It had Van Damme, Raul Julia, and was a fun film.
One of my favorite GoodBadFlicks to rewatch, and I heard Raul Julia’s M Bison’s “As I beheld satan” line in a Terminal Montage’s street fighter animation. Great line and Raul delivered.
Many of the people who criticized the film at the time, wanted a gritty, dark interpretation. A sort of on MMA tournament on film. But if you read the back stories, and see the super powers of each character, such a thing probably would not have worked.
Street Fighter had to distinguish itself from Mortal Kombat somehow. I think the arms-dealer plot was a pretty good gambit. If a non-state army like ISIS had existed in '96, I don't think anyone would have batted an eye at Shadaloo being the same sort of syndicate. If anyone were to do a remake now, I think you could get a lot of mileage out of Guile being an ASIS investigator tracking stolen American "combat enhancements" across the globe with his SAS contact Cammy. The pair break up Bison's money-laundering operation (an illegal MMA fighting ring) by beating everyone half to death and find allies along the way. Meanwhile, we keep seeing and hearing news reports about Bison playing Mussolini by way of General Zod until Team Guile finally has to make a stand when Bison takes a break from conquering Thailand and comes looking for them. If anyone actually sells a script based on that idea, I want 10% of what a writer normally gets, a credit in the movie or at least a phone call from a qualified writing agent.
This movie is awful and cheesy to the max and I love every minute of it. Just found your channel not too long ago and was hoping you talked about this movie at some point. I know it's terrible, but it really is so bad it's good lol
I’d love an updated version of this film with the exploring treatment, given how with your newer videos and by example the Mortal Kombat film you went beyond the film with the mess that was this films production and subsequent tie in game development
I was thinking about it but then just the other day Sony/Universal copyright claimed this video. So, it kind of killed my mood to give this further attention.
@@GoodBadFlicks okay one holy shit you replied I feel blessed and honoured great work with every single one of your videos, and two yeah that must suck to happen especially after it being up so long
This movie was part of my childhood. It knew what it was and never tried to step out of bounds of what it is. The Kruek and Black-Eyed Peas Vega Street Fighter was so shit because it thought it can take itself so seriously with a plot that was so shitty. JCVD and Julia in 1994 wanted to have fun making this "bad movie" and they definitely did from the entire tone of the movie. This is the Best video game movie ever made!
tonious35 they wanted the movie to be silly and fun, which is what it is. I don't understand people who don't get that. They tried to make the new one serious and it was awful
GoodBadFlicks it's because it doesn't respect the source material that's why people don't like it, they don't even use their powers. Also it's pronounced Ree-you not Rye-you
@@Juan_rivera Ree-you is not the correct pronunciation either. In fact there is no correct English pronunciation of the name, so either Ree or Rye can be acceptible. If you want to get the "proper" pronunciation, it can be closer to Roo, Dyoo, or Jew, depending on the accent.
What?! Even Mortal Kombat was far far far better & stuck to the source material compared to this. I dont get why make a movie called "Street Fighter" based off a video game with "street fights" & then try to make it some clown silly movie? Its not about "taking it serious" as it is sticking to the source material & what it is.
Thanks! Oh that is fantastic. I wish more movies did this sort of thing. Most of the time the costumes and props get destroyed, they should give them away as contest prizes! Well, at least you got something so all the work and extra shipping was worth it. ^^
Thanks, man! (I absolutely love your videos!) ^_^ The contest was a Street Fighter the movie art contest from a videogame magazine. (I'm not sure which one, it might say on the letter that came with the prizes, though) The contest rules said to draw a group shot of 4 or more Street Fighter characters together and I literally had to next day mail my entry to make it by the deadline. After what felt like forever, I received a huge box from Capcom that said I had placed 2nd...
Street Fighter is and always has been a HUGE part of my life. I'm nearing 40 now and my wife asked me years ago why it means so much to me (long story) but it's essentially ingrained into my DNA at this point, suffice to say I own SF merchandise, comics etc. Anywho, I was a young teen when this movie dropped, myself and all my arcade rat buddies were pumped to watch it so we went to a theater and, well, you know the rest. So many questions after seeing it. Afterwards I remember us getting a VHS copy of the Street Fighter anime movie and thinking Holy shit, THIS is what should've been in theaters. But as the years went on I actually wound up liking it due to how cheesy it is, plus Raul Julia's acting is so goddamned awesome in it you can't help but love him!
Lol he said gram crackers and Mountain Dew Mountain Dew red!!! 😂😂 JCVD and Stallone Jim Carrey are the reason why I became an actor I literally saw this the first day it came out and then right after that I went to go see dumb and dumber. I miss the 90s. When JCVD gets shot in the beginning I thought he really died I was so pissed, I yelled in the theater!
I am a looooooooooooong time Street fighter gamer and it never dawned on me that this movie had so little fighting. I guess because I loved the movie and was so caught up in the humor and goofy/fun characters that the lack of fighting never bugged me. My favorite video game movies Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter Double Dragon and Mario Bros.
Finally (well, I am 7 years late, but nostalgia only kicked in this past few weeks because of the lockdown - I saw this one in on the big screen back in '93) someone that actually understands that the humor in "Street Fighter" was intentional. To this day, I am still amazed when most people don't realize this was a huge farce that didn't take itself seriously, despite the movie clearly stating it every step of the way. After all, De Souza was the guy who penned the deleted scene in "Commando" where Arnie beats a soldier with his own mutilated arm while shouting "Stop hitting yourself!".
Wow, I'm actually kind of surprised because when I heard the DJ talk, I instantly thought of the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam", so to hear that was the actual DJ is pretty cool. Loved this movie btw, I genuinely found it to be really entertaining and I think if they're gonna make another live action movie adaptation of Street Fighter, they should have fun with it like this movie did.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the unintentional comedy remark. Its so weird that even until this day people say that the movie is unintentionally funny when it so clearly isn't! Just goes to show how much audiences preconceived notions of films colours their perception of it in the most profound ways.
You know...at first I didn't like this film at all after seeing it years ago. But upon seeing your review, I now have a whole new appreciation for it. Thank you very much my friend.
i swear, that fucking john wayne gacy portrait and everything that it inspires brings death wherever it goes. its almost like you have to be really conscious of it to see that shit coming
Thanks! Understandable, I know more than a few people who just don't like the movie. I think MK was the first video game movie to really get it "right" for both mainstream audiences and game fans.
Thanks! Yeah, youtube blocks some of my videos in other countries. However, if you go to my website (the link is in the description) you can see all of my videos, including the ones they block. Hobgoblins definitely, I never heard of Daniel der Zauberer until now but it looks like something I would check out. I'll give it a view, thanks for the recommendation!
The best thing about this whole movie was Raul Julia's performance, and the fact that he as a classically trained actor decided to star in a movie as chessy as this tells you how awesome he really was and why his death still saddens me all these years later.
He did it as a final gift to his kids because they loved the game. He acted his ass off & did all his own stunts, all while dying from cancer, simply because he loved his kids that much.
Understandable, its not for everyone. More action is always welcome and I agree I would have liked more fighting. I guess they didn't want to focus on Ryu because then they would have felt the need to make it a tournament movie instead of a military film. MK is excellent. Haven't seen Legacy but I'll check it out.
So happy folks are picking up on the reference. I was worried it might be too subtle. Hollywood is reboot/remake happy. Sad JCVD coudn't get the sequel off the ground before the reboot happened. Now we'll never get the proper sequel or any Street Fighter movie for at least another few years.
The guy who played M.Bison died a short time after filming so the dedicate the movie to him (11:10). Talk about adding insult to injury. And the part about going with a different sound fx when Bison looks up his bank account had me rollin!
The one biggest regret from this film was we never got a spin-off buddy action-comedy film with Dee Jay and Zangief. Those two were untapped comedy gold together.
Raul Julia knew he was dying and he did this movie so he could take his family on one last Vacation. Dude was a legend

If anyone actually sells a script based on that idea, I want 10% of what a writer normally gets, a credit in the movie or at least a phone call from a qualified writing agent.
Not to mention the game did not give a ton of lore for the movie’s writer to work with.
This movie is awful and cheesy to the max and I love every minute of it. Just found your channel not too long ago and was hoping you talked about this movie at some point. I know it's terrible, but it really is so bad it's good lol
I had to talk about this movie its too wonderful lol
Ming Na Wen is STILL smoking hot!
@@GoodBadFlicks okay one holy shit you replied I feel blessed and honoured great work with every single one of your videos, and two yeah that must suck to happen especially after it being up so long
Oh thats excellent. Do you remember what the contest was? Was it a mail in with the action figures or something?
@@salvatronprime9882 I'm never saying Rye-you, do fucking pronounce Miguel as fucking My-gwell? I rest my case lol
What?!
Even Mortal Kombat was far far far better & stuck to the source material compared to this. I dont get why make a movie called "Street Fighter" based off a video game with "street fights" & then try to make it some clown silly movie? Its not about "taking it serious" as it is sticking to the source material & what it is.
A possible reference?
Sagat says his stage name was 'Iron Fist'
Iron Fist in Japanese is...Tekken!
I took my teenage brother to see this after I got off work opening day. I still love it, it's a lot of cheesy fun. RIP Raul Julia.
Can't believe I saw this at the movie theater back in 94
"I guess you didn't see that"
DAMN.... Damn... those burns
sir, this was the best youtube video i have seen in years. thank you for bringing light to this movie.
Thanks!
Oh that is fantastic. I wish more movies did this sort of thing. Most of the time the costumes and props get destroyed, they should give them away as contest prizes! Well, at least you got something so all the work and extra shipping was worth it. ^^
I knew it. Mountain Dew and Code Red is the secret ingredient to being Blanka.
to0muchtoan I’ll have to remember that for cosplay purposes 😂
Thanks, man! (I absolutely love your videos!) ^_^
The contest was a Street Fighter the movie art contest from a videogame magazine.
I forgot how awesomely hilarious Bison was in this movie
8:57 van dams voice cracking when he says vacation hah ah that made my day
Street Fighter is and always has been a HUGE part of my life.
Back in college my friends and i would always say 'You've lost your balls' whenever the moment called for it
Lol he said gram crackers and Mountain Dew Mountain Dew red!!!
6:21 Epicest dialog written in the movie history! 😂😂😂
I bursted into tears laughing at the punchline. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's a crime that this masterpiece didn't win an oscar.
Raul julia was one of the greatest actors ever may he rest in peace
Wow, I'm actually kind of surprised because when I heard the DJ talk, I instantly thought of the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam", so to hear that was the actual DJ is pretty cool. Loved this movie btw, I genuinely found it to be really entertaining and I think if they're gonna make another live action movie adaptation of Street Fighter, they should have fun with it like this movie did.
Thanks!
JCVD is awesome, he is still making some great action dramas. If you haven't seen it yet, check out Assassination Games. Really good stuff.
Your commentary is hilarious!
That Bison rebuttal is fantastic and I still remember it!
I think you hit the nail on the head with the unintentional comedy remark. Its so weird that even until this day people say that the movie is unintentionally funny when it so clearly isn't! Just goes to show how much audiences preconceived notions of films colours their perception of it in the most profound ways.
That lightning bit is legendary
You know...at first I didn't like this film at all after seeing it years ago. But upon seeing your review, I now have a whole new appreciation for it. Thank you very much my friend.
Cadillacs and dinosaurs was an awesome cartoon!
One of my favorites!
i swear, that fucking john wayne gacy portrait and everything that it inspires brings death wherever it goes. its almost like you have to be really conscious of it to see that shit coming
At 8:08 when you said wait an actual fight I shit you not I got a random call
This is Raul Julia's best performance ever.
Thanks! Understandable, I know more than a few people who just don't like the movie. I think MK was the first video game movie to really get it "right" for both mainstream audiences and game fans.
Years later and I took for granted how good this movie was
I remember, I was 7-8 years old and I had to beg my father to go rent this for me at blockbuster... twice. And he did both times, such a great man.
Best movie ever, miss u raul, nobody can do a bad guy like u did bison
For I beheld Satan.
And he fell from Heaven!
LIKE LIGHTNING!
Secretary General: Have you lost your mind?
Colonel Guile: No, have you lost your balls?
It’s like a live action saturday morning cartoon.
We really need Jean Claude Van Dame to give more rousing, inspirational speeches.
WHERE........THE F#*K...........IS FEI LONG??!! That was the first question I asked after the still shot at the very end.
I just love you show the part where chun li holds the knife and it bends when it hit the other guy's body.
I tell my friends about Raul and what he did. Changes their outlook on the film.
The guy who played M.Bison died a short time after filming so the dedicate the movie to him (11:10). Talk about adding insult to injury.
And the part about going with a different sound fx when Bison looks up his bank account had me rollin!
haha! he does look like mojo jojo!
Bison is the only thing in this movie that doesn´t make me want to cut my veins.
Why? He sucked
The one biggest regret from this film was we never got a spin-off buddy action-comedy film with Dee Jay and Zangief. Those two were untapped comedy gold together.
Good point it does have that vibe.
