    Hi everyone :) So I'm taking a break from posting ODS videos/answering comments for personal reasons and am loving all of the community support I've seen in the comment sections! Im hoping this continues and everyone can use these videos as a source of relationship building and information sharing! Every one of you are amazing and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Hooyah Navy! ⚓

    Getting into this officer stuff, I had some kind of expectation of everything being so tough and maybe mean. But then I find a video teaching me to shine boots with such fun music and a little cartoon dog with a hat. I like it!

      Jess and Jakii what would you say the difference was between ODS and OCS from the perspective of the individual who is going through each? From the way you sound I guess I am fortunate I get to go through ODS (are the people who go this route considered soft or disliked? I’m a medical doctor and have Little knowledge of the military but I wanted to serve).

    Hi, I am a medical school Naval HPSP commission and am attending ODS this summer. I was wondering a few things pertaining to the female ODS aspects.
    1. You had said to wet wipe shower after PT to avoid shower congestion. Can we bring dry shampoo?
    2. What civilian clothes should be brought if we are allowed to go off base a few times?
    3. On the site it lists toiletries as an umbrella term. Are we allowed to bring basic makeup/allowed to wear make up? (ie. mascara)

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад

      Hi there and congratulations! That is amazing to hear and a huge step towards the future! For shower time a lot of females were able to shower, I just move slow in there and wet wiping was so much faster :) But yes, dry shampoo was a huge life saver while I was there and I cannot encourage it enough! As for make up it really depends on who leads your division. Some let their female officers wear make up and others withhold it as a priviledge that must be earned. My group was personally allowed to as long as it looked very natural. And about going off base, unfortunately they do not allow you to wear civilian clothes while at ODS, even when going through town. So they only civilian clothes you will be wearing is what you check in with and what you check out with. Now, I do not advise this at all but I did hear that some officers would meet with their spouses during free time and stay indoors where they would change into civilian clothes and relax. But if you're caught then you will be punished for breaking the rules D:

    I’m glad to see you decided to do more in depth videos. The first one was excellent.
    I have questions about uniform purchases: Did you buy everything at ODS (dress blues, dress whites, NWU’s AND khakis) even though you weren’t going to wear the Type IIIs at all and were not inspected in one of the dress uniforms?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  6 лет назад

      Thank you! I'm hoping the other videos will be just as helpful! :) So I ended up buying all but dress whites (which later turned out to be a mistake) because my next duty station was an army base and the closest NEX (Navy Exchange) to my current duty station is 2 hours away. Although most bases have uniform shops they can be limited on Navy uniforms and if you don't have a NEX nearby you could end up having to guess your size and order offline. I would recommend buying all of the uniforms if you're financially able to just in case you end up not near a Naval Station. My mistake was that I didn't buy dress whites while there because of space constraints while PCSing and we randomly had an inspection last week and I wasn't able to participate since I didn't think ahead and I'm still waiting on them to arrive ^.^; so it's always better to be safe than sorry.

    Ma’am.
    What kind of black Oxford shoes do you wear for ODS? Can I bring my plastic high gloss shoes. Or do we have to get the all leather ones?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад

      Hi I'm so sorry for the delay! For my class we were allowed to wear both. The warning was that if you had glossy shoes they would be significantly harder on your uniform. So they always recommended having leather and doing your best to shine them (which a good shine also helped with boosting uniform inspection points)

    Hello, thank you for posting these videos. I head to ODS in a couple of weeks and was curious about the knowledge based questions/inspections. How many times per day are you grilled with these questions and how strict are they with the responses? For example if you say "within sight" instead of "in sight," will that be a failure? Also, does every morning start with a uniform/room inspection? Thanks.

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад

      Hi there! I'm glad they were helpful! So it depends on what kind of question it is. There are some verbatim questions that are very strict -- such as the sailor's creed, orders of a sentry, pow rules, etc. -- and then outside of that it's not that strict at all as long as you're in the ballpark. The kind of questions you get will depend on if you're prior enlisted or new accension. As prior enlisted you should already know things like sailors creed and rank/recognition, so they usually won't ask those types of questions and will save those for new accensions. Also, sometimes if you are prior they may ask you questions specific to your ribbon rack or prior rating. As for when you will be questioned, it is definitely not an every morning thing. They usually reserve it for uniform inspections, which will be at least (and usually only) two -- and maybe a practice run to help get you prepared. Nothing too crazy and definitely no morning drills :)

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад

      Also your room can be inspected at anytime but there is only one room inspection that counts and it typically happens during your dress uniform inspection. But occasionally you'll find that the teaching team has gone through to check rooms and flip mattresses.

  • @legendofsmoke
    @legendofsmoke 5 лет назад +1

    I was wondering... i saw the same wool blanket that is used on ods, what if we got the same one from amazon and had the one already set and ready for inspection underneath it 🤔🤔🤭😂
    Anyway, I was planning to a bring a big suitcase enough for 5 week stuff and space for uniform and gear on the way home. They got a space to store them other than our lockers right?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад +1

      I would never suggest doing that >.> ever. Never ever. But if I were to comment on that, I would imagine that it would probably make things much easier in the morning -- but yeah, totally against the rules and half of the class definitely didnt do something similar, lol... 😅
      Anyways! About the luggage, I think that they will always have a room where you can put your luggage into, but I know that it gets locked at day 1 and doesnt open up again until the night or two before graduation. Most of your uniform items will fit into your sea bag-- only thing that wont may be your shoes, dress uniforms, and probably coat. But those they will also have a garment bag that you can check at the airport or lay out in the car :) so really a big luggage isnt necessary unless you want to avoid carrying out a seabag. Wheels are a lot more back friendly!

    • @legendofsmoke
      @legendofsmoke 5 лет назад

      Jess and Jakii its not big of a suitcase (4.5ft x 3.5 ft) probably not packing much, but mostly for items on the way back home (uniforms, souvenirs, shoes, etc). I think that and a backpack (filled w my documents) should do it? That way I wont have to hand carry it.

    In this or another video I believe you mentioned that women would have to get used to wearing the men's khaki top as well. Can you expand on the reason for this? Is wearing the opposite sex's top permissible?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад +1

      Hi there! So it depends on the class leaders. Ours wanted women to wear the male pants because it made inspections fair since the gig line is difficult to line up. But women are permitted to wear the male pants with the blouse tucked in and then women pants with an overblouse. However males are not permitted to wear the female pants/overblouse. But I'm the end it's just to make it a fair chance for both sexes to try and score the best on their inspection

    After ODS, do I get to choose between a direct flight to my PCS or can I choose to go back home and drive there? Also, I was wondering when BAH kicks in because I'm looking for apartments that aren't under military affiliation (to save money). I only know BAH varies from PCS/Zip code, but I'm not sure when it comes in. I'm currently waiting for ODS orders... :O
    Has anyone in your group ever failed ODS or even PRTs :O?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад

      Hi there! So after ODS you can pick between flight or drive :) with flying, they usually expect you to go straight to your duty station and only give you one day. If you pick drive then they will give you a set amount of days to make it to your duty station (350 mi=1 day). So if you are 900 miles away from your next duty station then you will get 3 days. Any extra days you use will count against your leave. Usually people dont need the full amount of days so depending on where your home is you could potentially stop on the way. Your BAH will kick in as soon as you check into your next duty station but if you are in need of money, you can ask for your travel pay in advance near the middle to end of ODS when they have you filling out the paperwork. And then as far as failing goes, you would really have to mess up big time to fail out of ODS. I've never heard of anyone not making it through -- but PRTs you can fail while there and move on but you can only fail 2 PRTs in 3 years and then big navy will kick you out. Most duty stations arent as strict with form as ODS but there are some that are even stricter. So it's best to try your hardest with PRT :) I hope this was helpful!

      I'm glad that its helpful! I was enlisted as a Navy linguist for almost eight years before being commissioned. It is a huge change between the two for sure and although it's been over a year since then I am still adjusting and there are days I really miss being enlisted!

      Thank you for your kind reply! Ok you basically told me your life story lol, now it’s my turn.
      I have rather odd military service, lol! I am a commissioned officer in the New York State Guard but I came into this military organization as an enlisted service member as an E-5 (which kinda struck me in the face as a huge shock because I was ready to come in as an E-1 then upon completion of IET (aka Boot Camp) I would be an E-2, the usual route for most enlisted service members when they initially enlisted at the start of their military service. Due to certain educational and professional credentials, they made me a buck SGT! I made E6 after I completed the Basic NCO Course two years into my enlisted service then on to Advanced NCO Course and finally a training class that combine both OCS and Basic Officer Course that enable me to become a commissioned officer! It’s so kool to have enlisted people to call me “Sir!” and give me a hand salute! Lol Now my MOSs, this is where it get a bit strange, I was a Military Policeman (MP), then I was a Communication NCO in the Signal Corp and finally the Quartermasters Corp!

    Hi,
    How often did u run the 1.5 mile in your 5.5 week ODS?
    How strict was the Navy D.I.with the time limit for the 1.5 mile run?
    Will they kick u out just because u take 1-2 min over the time limit for the run?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  6 лет назад

      So for my class we ran the 1.5 mile for testing 5× while there. Another class only ran it 2x. So it really depends on your teaching team. Unfortunately, if you dont get satisfactory score on your run then it is a failure. You'll be able to graduate ODS, but two failures in three weeks is an automatic discharge. If you are concerned about the run, I would definitely take some extra time to work out in the afternoons and on weekends and definitely push yourself during run morning PT (it's not always run PT) and also during FEP. There will also be a few PT buffs in your class, so definitely utilize them. I know that I hadn't run a PRT in about 5 years when I arrived and after leaving my run time was significantly better :) I wouldn't worry as long as you dedicate yourself ^.^ let me know if you have more questions :)

  • @taelerrwashington9164

    Question!! So I’m going to college this fall but I was thinking of attending the navy after college can u just apply to ODS after finishing college ?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад +1

      I believe you can provided that the career path matches up. ODS focuses mainly on medical, law, nuclear, and religion. If you pick something else that is more 'frontline' then you would likely be selected for OCS which is the 12 week hell version of ODS. So when selecting your degree I would definitely check to see which school it lines up with and then decide from there if the Navy is where you want to go. And if it is definitely start talking to a recruiter 2 years before you graduate and you should be able to start putting together a package and submitting about a year from graduation.

    Hi Jess, my husband will be going to ODS soon, what type of undershirts and t-shirts did you wear? I'm hoping to purchase these before he leaves, is there someplace I can go online to buy these?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  6 лет назад

      Hi there! The only undershirt he'll need is a couple of white undershirts. They should be crew cut with sleeves and made of cotton or poly cotton. Other than that he should be good in regards to undershirts. Everything else will be a uniform item (besides black/white dress socks (white only between May and September) and underwear) that will need to be purchased at military uniform shop or military thrift shop. But usually, if it's a new ascension, I recommend just waiting until getting there before buying anything to make sure that the right item is purchased and fitted correctly. I hope this helped!

    • @JessandJakii

      If it extends past your collar, you may be required to put it up. Normally in the Navy you can do a ponytail if it's not enough for a bun, but I'm not sure what ODS rules will be. When I went, we had to wear our hair in a bun 24/7, but ponytails weren't even a thing yet.

    What happens after ODS school?

    • @JessandJakii
      @JessandJakii  5 лет назад

      Hi there! It really depends on how you went in the first place. Some come in as O1 and then go to their follow up schools (such as law, social work, medicine, etc) across the country to earn their degrees or finish internships. Others come in already with the education complete and go straight to their next duty station to start work, such as one of my shipmates who went straight to San Diego and another out to Yokosuka.

      I'm not sure about reservists but I dont see why not! If she already has her masters or will have it before going to ODS, she will go straight to her first sury station after completing the course. Unfortunately I'm not really sure where most HCA officers go, sorry I couldn't be more help!

      Yes, so the male and female heads are seperated by a hallway, washer/dryer room, And I believe the supply closet as well. Each head comes with roughly 10 showers that look like your average gym showers with the curtains, and 20 toilets that have latching doors (a serious upgrade if you went through basic training, haha!).

      They don't directly to your face, but they will raise their voices to the entire group. I imagine that if someone did something particularly wrong then perhaps, but for the most part it seems like a one team one family kind of mentality :)
