I had a double pink eye. Spell when I heard what he said about Chrome ancestry I had to put on a captions just to read it three times.. thank God for fire emblem fans. I have played and beaten multiple fire emblem games including Awakening and I have not touched it in a long time. So when he said that I actually had to Google Marth's family tree.
Chrom is a counter pick character. I've mained him since the start of the game and he can do extraordinarily well in matchups where the consistent zoning and speed comes in clutch IE Mario or falcon. But has the same problem as Roy that they're both extremely committal. Many characters in this game can go in without doing so, rush in fade back bairs on Mario or wolf is a good example. When chrom picks the moment to go in he has fully committed, if your opponent guesses correctly they will come out on top. The difference between Roy and chrom being when you mess up that initiation you did 50% of the time. (100 in some matchups like joker or bayo.) So often times you play him as a patient zoner slowly taking stage space since one mistake can lead to death. This is the main problem between Roy and chrom, Roy gets rewarded for going in even more so than chrom and gets punished less when he does so. Chrom however is better than roy where you either have a decent way to recover against the char, and the need to keep them out.
I’m willing to bet at least one other person has pointed this out already, but Chrom isn’t Marth’s ancestor. Marth is his. Chrom and Lucina are actually his descendants.
I still maintain that roy is better. It’s not just the recovery, but the sour spots actually work in roy’s favor a lot with his combos, allowing him to do things that chrom cannot. Also the sweet spots that he gets are just so much more potent than chrom’s when they hit that I think roy will always be better. The recovery thing just makes roy way more consistent in matchups where a character can easily gimp chrom on top of being a better edge-guarding deterrent due to its hitboxes. I still enjoyed this video, I respect your opinions but unfortunately I don’t see anything changing about chrom’s lower status to roy. That being said I will never turn to the dark side and I will keep my pocket chrom but never a pocket roy.
Chrom with Roy's recovery would be better than Roy, because Chrom has consistency that Roy lacks, but Chrom with his own recovery just gets cheesed too hard to be viable.
I duo main both Roy and Chrom. Some days one feels better than the other. I think it depends on matchup most of the time and can also be quite situational. For example, if you take the first stock and are at high percentage against most opponents, Chrom might be better because you can Chrombo (Up B suicide combo. Works REALLY well against heavies at low percentage). Roy, on the other hand, can annihilate lighter character stocks very early on more consistently. I feel a lot safer edgeguarding with Chrom as well because of the vertical recovery difference. But I generally agree that Roy is overall the better character solely based on killing power and a less gimpable recovery.
As a Roy main, I can say that chrom feels amazing… most of the time. His neutral and advantage are far more oppressive and lenient than Roy’s, but the second you go off stage, it’s over; especially if your opponent knows how to properly deal with the Up-B. Either way, both characters are fire.
Yea, Chrom has some matchups where it´s way riskier to play him instead of Roy which makes it much more scarier to pick Chrom over Roy in, let´s say game 1 if you are not sure what the opponent plays. And especially when you get counterpicked and you know your opponent has a good char against Chrom.
Now, I don't main either character but I do play roy more than chrom simply due to the fact that when your on stage as chrom, it feels great swinging consistently strong hits but when your offstage and lose your jump especially when you're against a character with a counter, it demoralizing as hell. Chrom basically can't recover off screen without a jump but his more consistent damage and kill options make him really strong. Its like you get the highest highs but the lowest lows which makes him feel so inconsistent and annoying to play while roy is funnily enough feels more consistent because you don't have to worry about just straight up dying from being gimped whenever you get back thrown off stage.
While I don’t agree with all the practicality of switching characters week by week to solve a character crisis, this series is nothing short of entertaining. Been watching since the first one and find myself rewatching others at times. Definitely keep going, all the data you’re gathering is incredibly interesting to watch in sudo-real time.
I loved this video! I lived in Utah for a month last winter and I had a good set against spark, super cool to hear you play against other players I’ve played before
I think the ranking is more so that if you invest the time, the little things that roy does better will take you farther than chrome, and chromes weaknesses will be noticed more at higher levels. At a new to the character level, you might not notice the differences as much.
I’ll be honest, I think chrom is worse just because it feels borderline like matchup fishing someone. I definitely prefer chrom, especially because his lack of a sour spot makes him much more comfortable at a range. Generally, the recovery being completely terrible makes him hard lose to any character with a counter, decent gimping projectile, or generally good offstage game feel borderline unwinnable if your opponent is decently competent with those tools.
Been playing on Elite Smash for about 2 years now and I’ve literally never lost to Chrom. You made him look good here, but I still consider him bottom tier, personally.
The majority of the kit for these two characters are similar to each other but it goes to show how huge it is to have a somewhat okay disadvantage offstage, mixups are huge too. Which chrom lacks somewhat outside of “ohhh how am I gonna space my up b” or air dodging to ledge as the only two options. It’s what makes him volatile, sure it doesn’t matter at the lower levels. But at top level people want to force mistakes and get their win condition, which is kinda straight forward when fighting against chrom. It’s what made Ramin drop him initially but he’s playing him again for sheik’s bad matchups I assume (olimar, icies and gnw)
Incin! I look forward to this when it comes out. Honestly, this is my favorite series because I, too, suffer from choice paralysis. Edit: I just saw your incin video, oops, lol.
I feel like your story about playing that 3rd best in the state Sonic player is clear evidence on why Roy is substantially better at top level. No offense, but it sounds like that player was noticably better than you, but you still almost took a game off him cause you got a kill at 50 cause of Roy's ridiculous sweet spot power. At top level little things like that make huge differences. Taking the wind out of your opponents sails with huge unexpected plays like that are insanely valuable. The fact that Roy has that factor combined with the fact that he's way safer make him substantially better.
Fax. But you gotta admit, Chrom does do better in some matches and he is given wayy less credit then I believe he deserves. But it’s true that his recovery is a bottom 5 lol
The strength of Chrom is no argument he kills like crazy and gets mad dmg from stray hits. Roy is better tho cause he ain't gonna die to shenanigans from 80% of the roster. His combos are a bit more forgiving about percents (cause his sour spot weak hits) and his side b is crazy. Its honestly a lil unfair the difference in threat levels of the dancing blade of Roy, Lucina, and Marth vs Chrom's Dancing Blade
Choosing Roy or Chrom is honestly just a matter of what kind of consistency you prefer. Do you want your opponent to die anytime they reach triple digits or do you want to be able to have mix ups off stage? Choose based on personal preference and matchup and you'll do great with these characters.
Your video has been blessed from the algorithm for me. Glad I found this channel. Subscribed! (Also I'd love to see you play my main Bayonetta, it took me the entirety of ultimate to get above average with her)
Roy having more killpower + having a recovery makes him infinitely better imo. His hilt hits are way easier to hit than you'd expect and jair/jeffsmash are easy kill confirms Chrom has the worst recovery in the game and has a bit harder time killing thanks to not having the hilt hits. He has an addictive advantage state but no disadvantage state. That meaning, he has no way to escape a juggle and WILL die when put offstage
Yeah, but outside of recovery, Chrom is equal maybe even better than Roy despite having slightly less killpower. And besides if Chrom had the same kill power as Roy he’d be infinitely better. Plus, Chrom doesn’t always need to use his upb, he can choose different ways to mix up and avoid counters/gimps. He isn’t all that hard to kill with than Roy tbh. If his recovery was buffed at any point, it’d be more scary.
@@medecko4394 chrom doesnt need his up-b to recover, yes, but no one in this game does. The point made was that he has very few alternatives, none if he gets his jump sniped. His up-b being dogass makes him absurdly easy to kill, not even having a hitbox on top at all + any character with a counter can always kill chrom so long as they play it correctly Not to mention chrom in neutral has a harder time that you'd think, with roy having all the same combo starters (doing more damage all the while) and also having more simple stuff like dthrow nair Every reason you'd play chrom is another reason you should just play roy
@@WiselyCommaBaby While I agree he’s easy to kill, I find the combo starter pretty debatable. Because of Chrom’s having a lot of sweet spots he can find tons more routes than you realize. Sure, having more killpower is very beneficial and would take you a lot higher in the grand scheme of things, like getting a successful read and a combo that can lead to kills. But keep in mind that some of that can apply to Chrom too, and his upb can be pretty beneficial when it needs to be, especially since it could kill you at 0% from a cheese and can act as a finisher to some combos, and you can Chromicide from one combo. If they hadn’t nerfed the Chromicide, if Chrom has any priority on a Combo and upbs you offstage, then its most likely game over. I think you and others are just using “offstage” as the usual reason as to why Chrom ends up being bad and also having less kill power, but in general, the point I’M making is that while his recovery is very shit, he’s just as equal as Roy even if he doesn’t have equal stats as he does. Its the personal preference on what you’re going for. Its the same thing as per se, Pit and Dark Pit, and while comparing these two to Chrom and Roy is a very large stretch since there are people out there who know just how equal Pit is to D.Pit, Pit is still under the radar to some people anyway. They are both VERY committal and share half the same flaws while having their own. Whats really important is how you wanna approach playing Chrom and Roy.
Chrom does have more consistency but Roy has better kill set ups, recovery and a wider range of combos because of his hilt and sour spots. Roy is just harder to use and has a higher skill ceiling.
Nice video. I recommend giving Paisy try. That's my main. Also, I agree and think that Chrom is very underrated, and not really deserving of all the hate he gets.
Daisy was my main for all of Ultimate so I'm planning on saving her for last. Kirby also might take a while to do since I want to get good with characters neutral b's first.
Mained Roy day one whenever I play Chrom it’s weird to explain he feels weird to play compare to Roy. It could be because Roy has most hit stun and sends the Opponent further.
I don't think theres as big of a diff between roy and chrom that a lot of other (including top) players suggest, but I do think roy is like s tier to chroms a tier
I'd argue Chrom's neutral is the absolute best in the game (yes, that includes Joker and Mythra), but his linear recovery means he can't press advantage quite as well as Roy can, and his disadvantage state is one of the absolute worst in the game. I'd say that makes Roy better overall, but there are matchups where Chrom definitely shines more with his ability to space. But his bad matchups are worse than any of Roy's
I was wondering why there was no video last week but it makes sense now. Also when you play Pokemon trainer will it take 3 weeks just wondering I don't want to pressure you.
I'm currently planning on releasing a video every other week right now. I spent a month with these characters because I wanted to catch up with my release schedule. The way it was before was I would be making a video about one character, playing another, and then there'd be an awkward third character who I hadn't played in a while but still needed to keep in mind because they would be my next video.
Hey how are you able to get the footage of your local games? Are you just saving the replay and if you are how are you sending it to yourself? I've been wondering ever since I found this channel and I wanna use what you do to record my games as well! Also I'm a roy main and I NEED to get better high key
What I do is I put my own personal switch in the dock and remember to save the replay. As long as I'm mashing the y button instead of the a button it's usually fine although if there's a "no footage found" that's because I forgot lol.
Bruh why is it in this video that I get taught RAR is basically just a pivot cancel jump. Other videos be going into crazy detail about these weird timings. Then you describe it like a pivot ftilit
in a meta where your stock can potentially be deleted after losing neutral once + guessing wrong once or twice in disadvantage, chrom just cant keep up. while he does have the neutral of a top tier, he lacks that X-factor that other top tiers use to close out stocks early and/or force your opponent to play around you (diddy banana, joker arsene, roy side B, incineroar side B, steves diamond weapons, kazuyas ewgf, etc.). hes too honest, for a lot of ppl why play him when you can have another character with equally as good neutral, without a bad recovery, and with an X-factor move
Roy isnt better than chrom just easier...I'm of the firm opinion that any echo fighter of high similarity to the original cannot possibly be significantly worse than that other character...roy and chrom ryu and ken peach and daisy pit and dark pit marth and lucina Simon and Richter...if all these characters share near identical movesets weight movement speed frame data and damage output and ko power no sane logical individual could ever argue any one being vastly superior or inferior to the other..one can be slightly better than the other but so drastic a difference as to be two tiers separated...absurd...tier lists in general are largely biased untested nonsense...most characters considered good simply tend to be the ones the best players use it's that simple...roys like the one sword or range character in the game thats the complete opposite of what every other character with range wants to do...every character with range or a disjoint wants to hit you at max range where their moves are mostly safe if blocked...Roy's the opposite...his sweet spot and hardest hitting hitboxes are all the unsafe ones on block...this is where chrom is better than roy...if you're actually minding your spacing like a proper disjoint character chrom is better since he has no sweet or sour spot...meaning at higher level play he doesn't have to take as much risk while getting greater reward when applying pressure compared to roy...wherass spacing with roy means hitting with a wet noodle...roy does have a slightly better recovery but it's not a grand improvement Roy's recovery in itself is not great and chroms recovery is mediocre but nothing significantly worse than the likes of clouds or aegis recovery...and yet that never seems to be considered a game breaking issue for those characters to people...and while chroms recovery is worse for actual recovering its a better out of shield and anti air option compared to Roy's...its also the most devastating reversal recovery for messing up an edge guard attempt...and Roy's sweetspot damage and knockback are not much higher than chroms...so overall...its not that roy is better...its that roy is easier...roy actively rewards players for bad spacing and his recovery is much easier to just throw out unhindered at lower levels of play...wherass chrom requires some decent amount of intelligence foresight and reaction time to get around the opponents edge guard attempts...roy is simply an easier character to play...specially for lower skill levels...much like lucina compared to marth...literally the only difference between lucina and marth is the sweet and sour spot mechanics...marth having to get consistent well spaced max range hits to get good ko power puts him at a much higher skill ceiling compared to lucina...basically if you want to play marth well you need good spacing period...lucina however has no sweet or sour spot gimmicks so good spacing and precision arent as necessary...making her damage and ko power consistent...and this alone is enough to make people think lucina is somehow vastly superior...no...they literally share all the same strengths and weaknesses...and every match up is identical for the two characters...lucina and roy are simply characters that let you get away with playing sloppy more...at higher levels with higher precision skill marth and chrom reward better spacing as is intended for disjoint sword fighters...as for tournament results...irrelevant...mr r was the only relevant chrom player in the games history and mr r hasnt been top 10 in the world since like smash 4 and his switch to sheik hasnt improved his performance whatsoever...and even roy is seldom seen to any relevant degree anymore...Cosmo dropped him for aegis and who's left...goblin...pfft when's the last time any of these players have been relevant and consistently top 8 at any major
Roy is extremely relevant. Chrom is not. This is because Chrom's recovery is shit. Roy is relevant because he has a better recovery, good combos, and ridiculous kill power. Roy is played by Kola, who has Top-eighted multiple majors this year. I don't know how you managed to miss the best Roy player in the world off the list, also who tf is Goblin lol, Cosmos never played Roy, he played Corrin and Inkling, fact-check your info before posting a whole-arse essay about something that is straight up non-true.
i've mained chrom since the day the game came out, i don't play seriously but as far as online strictly, he's one of the worst characters in the game imo.
It's a hot take but I rate Cloud very highly. Although that may have been my bias showing as it felt like a hard matchup back when I was a Daisy main lol. We'll see if my opinion changes after playing both of them.
Nah im not going through a character crisis im going through a normal one

You didnt have to run into a counter. You didnt get jokered, marthed, incineroared, etc. I think youd have a strong conclusion if you did.
chrom is literally 100% a better roy. if only it wasn't for his up special at higher levels of play.
chrom shouldve had what the mii fighters up b was. press up b once to do marths up b but do it tiwce to do the aether move
Love this series. I just started playing Olimar and he is pretty fun. You should give him a try
He's one of my least played characters but Duck Hunt surprised me with how fun he was so I'm looking forward to playing as the tiny space captain!
@Ben Servey congratulations, you're getting an Olimar video in a couple of weeks
@@TuesdayTasticcool that you did that
I need this to better understand how to beat these twins
Douglas J. Falcon. You wont regret it.
He was my secondary for almost all of ultimate before my Character Crisis. I can't wait to play him again
roy is true jab to bair if u do the back tilt jump canceling
Character Crisis? For me, it's just Tuesday
Tuesday is the best day
Pretty hard character to learn in a short time but joker is a great time.
can you do marth / lucina next? since we're on the page of swordies
Let's just say I have something in mind for Utah's major Crown in a couple of a weeks. #ComeToCrown
If you ever do zss i am QUITE interested in how the outcome will be
Damn this shit look like Dashwalk Dueling
Best channel on RUclips fr
Chrom is Marth's descendant, not his great great great great grandfather of Marth.
Yeah my bad I didn't fact check before writing that line.
@@TuesdayTastic no problem bro I just thought I got the lore wrong since a lot of FE mains are fans of the series lol
Add Luigi to the poll
Hey how are you able to get the footage of your local games? Are you just saving the replay and if you are how are you sending it to yourself? I've been wondering ever since I found this channel and I wanna use what you do to record my games as well!
Also I'm a roy main and I NEED to get better high key
What I do is I put my own personal switch in the dock and remember to save the replay. As long as I'm mashing the y button instead of the a button it's usually fine although if there's a "no footage found" that's because I forgot lol.
I know that when you get to MK you’re gonna struggle
Bruh why is it in this video that I get taught RAR is basically just a pivot cancel jump. Other videos be going into crazy detail about these weird timings. Then you describe it like a pivot ftilit
change his recovery and you have yourself the best character in the game
Thats so beyond cap
Suggestion you should try wii fit trainer
Except from the up B I think Chrome is better.
in a meta where your stock can potentially be deleted after losing neutral once + guessing wrong once or twice in disadvantage, chrom just cant keep up. while he does have the neutral of a top tier, he lacks that X-factor that other top tiers use to close out stocks early and/or force your opponent to play around you (diddy banana, joker arsene, roy side B, incineroar side B, steves diamond weapons, kazuyas ewgf, etc.). hes too honest, for a lot of ppl why play him when you can have another character with equally as good neutral, without a bad recovery, and with an X-factor move
I feel like you'd enjoy Diddy Kong, so I'm gonna ask for him since you already did Incineroar. Also please don't main Olimar.
Too late 💀
Not watching. Yes he is
ZERO SUIT!
week 3 of begging for mii brawler, PLEAASE PLEASEPLEAPLEASE-
He was so close to winning the poll too. Duck Hunt just ended up winning the tie this week.
@@TuesdayTasticyeah my boy got robbed
Chrom is awful.
Awfully amazing, yeah
He is worse tho, not like bottom tier but a lot worse
Wario
i've mained chrom since the day the game came out, i don't play seriously but as far as online strictly, he's one of the worst characters in the game imo.
Did you put cloud above joker!?
It's a hot take but I rate Cloud very highly. Although that may have been my bias showing as it felt like a hard matchup back when I was a Daisy main lol. We'll see if my opinion changes after playing both of them.
