What's wonderful and difficult about Beethoven (at least as far as Barenboim's criticisms of Lang Lang's pulse are concerned) is that while Beethoven is romantic, his backbone is so classical and so rhythmically centered. Barenboim really brings out a nuanced tension and release by having Lang Lang obey structure and slip in and out of it, without losing Lang Lang's personal touch to the piece.
True ! Beethoven was in the first period of romanticism, passionate, idealist, intellectual, it was not at all the languid romanticism of Schumann, very far !
Phenomenal! What an extraordinary Master! I found the entire video breathtaking. Lang Lang is excellent without any doubt, but Barenboim's profound wisdom coupled with his lightness and sense of humour place him in a different league for me - no doubt one Lang Lang can aspire to in a few decades from now...

I love lang lang, at this point he was already a renowned pianist, yet he’s humble and still has that curiosity in discovering masters like Barenboim’s interpretation on Beethoven’s work.
I think Mr. Barenboim's answer to the first question after Lang Lang had finished was very instructful because it points to his fundamental view and understanding what music is. I think Barenboim, to his credit, sees and understands music much more than a discipline or activity that one does, no matter how seriously, but as something fundamental to living itself.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Barenboim’s voice before, his voice is so gentle and firm, such a lovely voice combined with a lovely repertoire of his. Probably some of the best pianists ever.

An absolute privilege to be able to sit in on this incredible masterclass- great tips for building even more tension, excitement, musicality and nuance into Beethoven’s piano sonatas- think I’ll go practice again 🎹🎶❤️
Actually, Lang Lang was very gracious to agree to be the student to master teacher Barenboim--Lang Lang who was already a seasoned performer in his own right when this was done. I think this came right after they recorded the Tchaikovsky No 1 together and Barenboim asked him to participate. LL demonstrates once again he's not only a great pianist but a great human being too, willing to take instruction from one of the great Beethoven interpreters of our time.
This is some Yoda level stuff going on here. When he speaks of the order coming out of the chaos and strife, he is talking about pushing yourself beyond your own limits. To get to the next level you have to go beyond what you already can do and reach for the next rung on the ladder so to speak. Amazing stuff to watch happen in real time.
He reminds me of my teacher. The passion, the expression and the perseverance on details. Seems all piano teachers speak the same language. Wonderful lecture!
To get into a composer's head requires deep relationship with the music. That is what Barenboim does very well. Beethovens piano sonatas are all worth of thorough listening. I did it last time when I was in hospital. Lang Lang is one of many rising interpreters of piano music.
For any serious pianist, this back and forth with Lang Lang and Mr. Barenboim, discussing pianism generally and Beethoven in particular is not to be missed. Both serious and dedicated musicians! A banquet of music ideas and performance ideals!
This should inspire students from all backgrounds to continue learning. You have Lang Lang, one of the world's premier pianists, still trying to improve here. Everyone, even the greatest masters, always have something to improve on, and that is a fundamental aspect of an artist's mentality. One never gets satisfied. even before the help of Barenboim... Lang Lang had a LOT of very beautiful things to say with this powerful work! every great pianist has struggled with this epic work!
We must admit that he is a great teacher and great observer, he explains many things that are basic but important elements that are essential for a great pianist. I would like to have a little bit of his memory and talent. Both great artists.
Words, characters, phrases, paragraphs, commentaries etc.. Really the performance of such a masterpiece is like writing an essay. This is so inspirational!
You can see Barenboim face and hear him think, I have nothing to teach this guy, Barenboim was thoroughly enjoying the entire performance of Lang Lang.
Lang Lang is a classical music phenomenon. I think the versatility with which he plays the piano and the way he conducts his career, LL is already a musician forever. He's making his history like the Beatles, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie... Just some of the names I can think of now. There's Ella, unforgettable! All of them, like Lang Lang have an eternal legacy. Generations will come and other musicians will quote him, say his name as an example, frequent environments where they can hear his music. Legacy is more extensive than we imagine, because we don't know where it ends. I don!'t need to make mirabolical elucubations to discuss what Lang Lang means in the lives of people who admire him. He's the man! That's it. Sometimes I ask myself: does Lang Lang belong to the music or does the music belong to Lang Lang? Meanwhile, I go on with Lang Lang drinking from this inexhaustible fountain of wisdom. That's it for today.

One thing that stood out to me was the fingering choices for the trill sequence around 30:22 Because he does everything with the right hand he's tempted to stall in the displacement. Now compare to Barenboim's 33:50 where he uses his left hand for the transition notes so each trill is followed by another seamlessly.
*EDIT* to answer my own question: Barenboim called in Lang Lang as a last minute kinda thing. The latter had to give up catching the world cup live despite having bought a ticket already. Also according to Lang Lang himself, Barenboim had taken him in as him teacher/mentor for many years. Lang Lang even stayed at Barenboim's house occasionally. He said he was terrified of maestro(while having the upmost respect for him), and rightful so. This masterclass took place during that period. ============================================================== What I noticed after going through the whole series of 6 is that Lang Lang is the only student that referred to the sheet music. I'm a little curious as to why. Barenboim is truly an inspiration. One learns so much about life from listening to him talk about music. Highly recommend his BBC documentary "In his own words". Both here and there there exist so many quotable wisdom :D
I think his face expressions and body movements actually prove that he is really feeling the music and the notes he played. He actually did some movements when he played those big legato sounds for example around 11:45-11:54, and those movements really helped him get those sound out. That‘s lot of misicians would do. If someone play piano seat 100% still with absolutely no face expression and act like a zombie, I am sure that the sound would also like "zombie" with no emotions and airs into music. That‘s nothing wrong with Lang Lang and he played this sonata very good actually.
I think its a pianist related thing, you could describe Horowitz as sitting like a zombie in some performances, yet he manages to put in more emotions than anyone else. Take his performance of Schubert's impromptu no 3 for example.

One thing that can be said about Lang Lang is that he has deep devotion for what he does . He is finding his voice but has a way to go before approaching musiciàns such as Glenn Gould and Rachmaninoff .
Kudos! The producer of this video did justice to Music. Very interesting and useful to piano teachers. This tandem of two masters is rare. Maestro Barenboim taught very well and Master Lang Lang is a good student. The facial reaction of Lang Lang is awesome. He internalizes ss he said he sees construction of big bldgs. Me? I imagine my childhood.--direct frm the Philiipines
Yet completely out of his depth intellectually as well as emotionally in his playing, when faced with an eminence of Barenboim's gravitas ;-) Which of course is fair enough, given their age difference back then. But it also shows how weird it is that Lang Lang is almost a household name compared to Barenboim who is definitely less well known internationally... When it comes to Beethoven, Barenboim (an amazing conductor in his main profession) pretty much is the one to go to. Lang Lang arguably will master other composers to greater effects than him these days, tho.
I’ve never forgotten what Barenboim once said when he was rehearsing a violin concerto with Maxim Vengerov. He held up the score and said, “This is not the concerto. It contains everything but what is essential to make music”. Simply playing the notes without a sense of what the music is trying to communicate isn’t music making. Barenboim’s performance at the end of this video is masterful. It highlights the gulf in musicianship between the master and the student. It comes as no surprise that very few amongst the myriad of instrumental players ever become masterful musicians.
Lang puede ser de los mejores de la actualidad pero particularmente nunca me transmitió nada a comparación de barenboim que cada tecla que toca lo hace con una expresión diferente y me transmite diferentes emociones...
That first comment from Barenboim is something that I always had in mind in regards to Lang Lang's play. He is exceptional there is no question about it, but it seems like his playing style does not seem to be structured. It seems like he is playing moment by moment. Passage by passage. and I felt like back then not anymore, it was due to his physical pompous style of playing.
The teachers sometimes still learn.Or like The chineses say:teachers are not who teachs but that one who learn.Congratulations Lang Lang you have so much humilty.
For those of you who think this video is somewhat long and like to skip, please be sure to listen to the QA section where it goes to a completely new, wonderful level.
He is doing amazing work with his Eastern Diwan. Outstandingly engaged, against a lot of hostility, esp here in Berlin where they fabricated a scandal against him for political reasons. Trying to further dialogue and peace between Israel and Palestine is not something certain powerful circles actually appreciate very much, sadly and shamefully.
Hardly a fan of Lang Lang, I am impressed by his playing of the first movement of the Appassionata here. This was very good piano playing and he prepared meticulously. The numerous nuances impress me more than Maestro Barenboim's supposed improvements. There was a musicality, thoughtfulness and humility that had become less obvious as he became more famous. I love in particular his choice of tempo. The tempo of this movement is tricky; there are twelve beats to the bar and even famous pianists make the mistake of playing too fast and turning twelve beats to four beats in a bar. Here, you can hear all twelve beats. This is an aspect of Beethoven not often mentioned. If you follow his time signature and count every beat, you have got the right tempo, and that's what Lang Lang achieved here so beautifully. However admirable and impressive though, the interpretation was only a work in progress. The pathos, the anger and the metaphysical are dimensions of this work hardly touched on yet. Within the confines of a masterclass, Barenboim was only dealing with the trees; there is a wood and a mountain out there to be explored. Barenboim's Beethoven cycle in Berlin is a testament to this. Paradoxically, the wide-eyed approach adopted by Lang Lang makes easier listening than Barenboim's mature and tortured interpretations. You can love this music to death.
@@teufelhunden8308 And thus is the age-old debate. Does the interpretation of the composer supersede that of the musician? If it does, then do we bother listening to new performers? If it doesn't, then are we disrespecting the composer by bringing individual style to their repertoire?

He actually did some movements when he played those big legato sounds for example around 11:45-11:54, and those movements really helped him get those sound out. That‘s lot of misicians would do. If someone play piano seat 100% still with absolutely no face expression and act like a zombie, I am sure that the sound would also like "zombie" with no emotions and airs into music. That‘s nothing wrong with Lang Lang and he played this sonata very good actually.
Horowitz wants to see you
I think its a pianist related thing, you could describe Horowitz as sitting like a zombie in some performances, yet he manages to put in more emotions than anyone else. Take his performance of Schubert's impromptu no 3 for example.
Barenboim is a true master if there ever was one.
Yes! Great Barenboim, tell the undeetable Great Lang Lang how to play! YES! PERFECTO!
One thing that can be said about Lang Lang is that he has deep devotion for what he does . He is finding his voice but has a way to go before approaching musiciàns such as Glenn Gould and Rachmaninoff .
Lang Lang I just love it smooth and so motioning like a feather I wish to see you next year in philly
Exquisite performance by Lang Lang.
Bethoven master really can challege Lang Lang’s technique, magic
Viet nguyen hoang phong I don’t think he’s challenging, just assisting, nothing too much wrong with his technique,
This should be called mastersclass
This masterclass is so precious!
never touched piano and why am i here finish the video like huh interesting.
Hopefully you're inspired to play one!
That first comment from Barenboim is something that I always had in mind in regards to Lang Lang's play. He is exceptional there is no question about it, but it seems like his playing style does not seem to be structured. It seems like he is playing moment by moment. Passage by passage. and I felt like back then not anymore, it was due to his physical pompous style of playing.
just imagine how they playing it. but even more crazy the dude who wrote it !
I don’t play any instruments in my life, but I can’t stop watching this video.
Barenboim turning pages for Lang Lang? - surprising ... like a GEICO ad.
.........😐 his teacher.
Like that you can be really sure there won't be any page-turning errors.
De las mejores masterclasses del mundo
The teachers sometimes still learn.Or like The chineses say:teachers are not who teachs but that one who learn.Congratulations Lang Lang you have so much humilty.
For those of you who think this video is somewhat long and like to skip, please be sure to listen to the QA section where it goes to a completely new, wonderful level.
No sé nada de música, pero las explicaciones de Barenboim me parecen brillantes.
wow! ejemplo de grandeza y humildad de #Lang Lang! Se aprende de los mejores siempre!
Back when Lang Lang was normal.
he isn't anymore?
Hiep Ha Le he's a god now
When next to Barenboim he doesn't allow himself his usual exuberance
he's just respecting barenboim
@@orb3796 a god? HAHAHAH if a man plays faster is that synonym of god? what a concept
I am not a musician, but I can really hear the feeling of his keys.

This is why Barenboim works for peace finally because the peace is balancing to completely
Its not a matter of interpretation. Its a matter of Beethoven’s intention.
@@teufelhunden8308 And thus is the age-old debate. Does the interpretation of the composer supersede that of the musician? If it does, then do we bother listening to new performers? If it doesn't, then are we disrespecting the composer by bringing individual style to their repertoire?
Whaau!!!!! How privileged Iam to experience this class.
