"Put your ear on my left hand".
I love that phrasing.
Daniel Barenboim in a previous video (a masterclass with Yang Yang) stated that music can never be a profession; it is a way of life.
All I can hear after he said that is what his left hand is playing...simply astounding
and you did....
I tried but it was too hairy for my liking warts and all

My god the bass of that Steinway 🤯

What is up with this replies xd
its a hundred thousan dollar bass
The sound becomes texture under his fingers: deep, lush, silky velvet. Entrancing.
As someone who's not musically trained, listening to Maestro Barenboim's exposition of this piece makes me feel both humbled and blessed that I am part of this creation called humanity capable of such simple beauty.
Merci monsieur ,quelle fraîcheur c est magnifique

Definitely ONE of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written...
After a day of work on Sunday, on a place where there's no subtillities and lot of consumerism, it is just so kind that I came up to this video with Daniel Barenboim explaining details on Claire de Lune. Now I'm filled with love. Thank you maestro for always having thie will to transmit your love for Music.
My jaw dropped when I heard you play the beginning of the song. Great
Every now and then someone comes along and writes a piece of music that is nearly perfect. And this is one of those pieces.
His playing is so heavenly. It's like taking a few minutes walk in space, far away from this painful planet
What a beautiful man...you will listen in your own way
When I compare his way of playing Clair de Lune and mine, I have the feeling that we don't play the same piece at all aha.. he's amazing!
I have the same reaction. He's not only a much better pianist than me, he has a far better understanding of the structure of the music; I just read the notes and try to hit them.
@@soaringvulture Now,when i'm playing this piece,I hear different things,thanks to this video!
So me
Barenboim ignores the rhythm in the score and makes up his own. Horrible. That may be why his Clair de Lune sounds different than yours. He doesn't count!
@@kitbeethoven I didn't think of that!!!You're right!!!

J’adore!
Daniel Barenboim is a good man.
Admirable.
So this little video made me cry. What a beautiful powerful example of the good that platforms like RUclips can bring....
100%
I dont get how anyone can dislike this video. the master is teaching people how to appreciate the music in its rightful form, its construct. Not to only indulge ourselves in this pieces' nice melody and atmosphere but he teaches us to understand the logic behind it which authenticates its mastery.
It's RUclips. Some people have a pathological need to denigrate the work of others, it seems to inflate their flaccid ego.
Nicht von dieser Welt 😳how very weird you chose a German You Tube name, and you don’t even speak German. Just like you are a snob about art
I think you are trying to appear very sophisticated....alas...gotcha😂🤣!!!!!
@Nicht von dieser Welt Out of curiosity, what music do you enjoy?
Fruit boots, Nicht?
herr barenboim-sie sind ein grossartiger künstler
"...on the ground....in the air ". Great visual. thanks maestro!
I never realized the first sentence is actually of syncopation since my first time playing clair de lune twenty years ago. What a revelation! Time to revisit this masterpiece.
I always say it as an anacrusis, so the second chord was on beat 1
Means you weren’t really counting! Lol
I've always called it "playing after the downbeat".
Still learning what really is special in music at 87 and pleased as punch in doing so!!
Please be sure to place 9 beats in a measure, as indicated in the score, and certainly NOT reflected in Barenboim's playing, whose rhythm here is disgraceful.
Thank´s YOU
Thank you Mr. Barenboim
It's a joy to see you thinking and feeling about music
Thank you very much
This piece of music brings tears of joy to me EVERY time I hear it.
It has a profound effect on me.
Please post more sir ! You have no idea how much we love and respect you !
Muchas bendiciones.
The art of listening...thank you very much
Barenboim has made the world a better place for those with little or more knowledge of classical music. Brilliant, effortless musical gift.
you say brilliant effortless and i say brilliantless effort.
Oh, there's effort behind that, don't you doubt. Years and years and years of sweat and toil make it =Look= effortless.
At 80 You inspire me to learn more! Thank You!
great idea - training the listeners' ears - it makes the musical piece more tantalizing - the listener is no longer being dragged along - but more alert - and eager - i wish this had been available to me decades ago
Great Barenboim. It's my favorite piece of piano solo.
How I love Baremboim❤ I could listen to five hours on (composer's name) with him ❤❤❤
This piece is so beautiful, it makes me stop whatever I am doing and just listen. So beautiful it makes me tear up. Short. Simple. Masterful. Beautiful.
I just love the sensitivity, I feel at home
Thank you Sir. Listening from the Philippines and sharing with everyone I know. ❤
Wow....so beautiful it hurts, but in a good way.
I just watched a video of the recording of Debussy playing Clair de Lune. This has all the wonderful feeling of the composer's own performance. Mr. Barenbolim obviously knows his music. Lovely!
Thank you Daniel. We love you.
Thank YOU! Maestro!
Thank you sir, for bringing a bit of culture and beauty to RUclips. This music reminds us of the best of humanity. In this world of war, hatred, oppression, and destruction, if only we could all focus on the good, the beautiful, the sublime.
Amen
Saying that the first phrase begins, "in the air" as opposed to the second time with a more elaborate left hand being, "on the ground" is such a simple but beautiful metaphor. It's perfect. I'll never hear it the same way.
Thank you so much Maestro Barenboim, never stop believe in, only music is our salvation and you are doing a great job indeed, supporters are always here to backup you.. that's what fans are for
SALUDOS DESDE ARGENTINA PARA EL MAESTRO BARENBOIM , QUE NOS REPRESENTA TAN MARAVILLOSAMENTE EN EL UNIVERSO DE LA MUSICA .- EL CLARO DE LUNA DE DEBUSSY ES UNA GENIALIDAD MUSICAL DE MI PREFERENCIA . UN GRAN ABRAZO Y LO ESPERAMOS SIEMPRE EN BUENOS AIRES -
A hero for our time. Pure light, in a time of darkness.
Exquisite… the most beautiful sound and composition in the world
A rare gift to humanity.
And thank you Maestro.
Now…I was, 6,7 and thought this piece is so beautiful…I want to hear it many times…not knowing anything about chord changes or syncopations…
When I was 4,5 I always cried when the Purcell theme comes after the fugue at the end at Britten Orchestra guide for the youth. So….WHY? Why did I have to cry with that music.
The great mistery.
Oh, my goodness, you opened it right up for me. It's about loneliness and longing. Of course. Thank you so much.
Wow!
The Master himself!.
I was completely mesmerised by this your Video.
A veritable Masterclass on this beautiful piece of music.
I will be following all your Presentations.
I cant believe I have been so lucky to see a quality Presentation from a talented Pianist.
Thank you Maestro.
I've listened to so many renditions of this masterpiece,.....but Barenboim to my ear takes the prize,..... bravissimo.
Thank you so much Maestro for uploading this video.
Bravoooo....Maestro
A genius playing the music of a genius.
Bravo MAESTRO!
Merci,Maestro!
oh bullshit!
Its a tease....thankyou mr. Daniel - absolutely beautiful play.
Wonderful Thank you !
You are a Genius.
Thank you, Maestro.
Thank you Very much. ❤
Thank you for sharing your great knowledge for viewers like me. Clair de Lune is also my favorite one.
Seeing this makes me realize that learning what is written on the sheet music is merely the first step- the beauty and magic comes long after (and sometimes not at all).
We said. Bravo !
Que Maestro!
We need more of these videos from the masters of our time talking about the masterpieces of the past.
I very much appreciate that Barenboim is one of the few performers (another is Lang Lang) who draw attention to the gentle dissonances in the piece rather than trying to make them just softly dissolve into the harmony. It enhances the overall wistful effect of the piece dramatically.
I love how Daniel breaks down the piece on an emotional level. I'd love to study under him. Such valuable information!
So much passion in such subtlety.
what a fucking pianist! .... he literally lives by his fingers connected with his heart and mind. the way he plays seems like caressing a woman he loves. 😊
Thank you that was beautiful. I loved it all the way from Africa.🐘.
My god! So beautiful!!
4:19 comparing the different parts was really mind blowing to me and also really amazing
Gracias Daniel !!!! Saludos desde tu querida Argentina.
Grande Barenboim, thanks to you to share with us your wisdom!
Beautiful, so relaxing
Absolut amazing! Fanastic Master bouth.! Thank you Mister Barenboim. Your super beautiful sound! Your super soft, delicat just perfect timing and phrasering. What A beautiful Debyssi dreaming, moonlight
i now understand why debussy was once titled as the 'monet of piano', his pieces are phrased so beautifully yet still robust and firm, it is beautiful how he can shape it using odd chords or phrasing/rhythms in his pieces which can complement other phrases in unimaginable ways. He is an impressionist of music.
Viva luengos anos.
GRACIAS MAESTRO!!!
Great Master teaching us how to listen and understand 👏
This peice represents the beauty of life and it's mysteries, the ability to create new life and exile old life to make room for new discoveries. It's a peaceful representation of the complexity we as not just humans, but as creatures hold all together in one life.
The way he touches the keys is so graceful
I love how he doesn't offer any explanation or interpretation of the piece beyond factual description "listen here for the syncopation... and then here, the chord is different" and yet I feel richer having watched and listened.
maybe you don't really understand the word "richer".
Love love such music....drift away...simply lovely...👍👍🎵🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵
He teaches like he plays. Everything has meaning.
Most amazing piece of music. It touches the deepest depths of my soul. Debussy played and teached on the hands of the master. Thanks for your sensibility and love for the music Mr. Barenboim
I can't wait to finish this piece it's so beautiful
you will never finish it hopefully, hopefully it will be with you forever, always changing......
i learned it about a year and a half ago, still trying to master each step at a time. I hope I'm able to finish this in time for my grannies to listen.
And? How is it 2 years later :)
Yes! How it's going?

Daniel, you are a miracle of God on earth. Your music has done so much good for the world. Thank you.
There is a reason this is one of the greatest compositions of all time....its like floating down a river
what a delightful gentleman !
Maestro Barenboim ❤️
Prachtig, voor mij zeer emotioneel❤️
As someone that listens to heavy rock (AC/DC , Zepplin and the likes) but produces dance music ..... this is actually my fave piece of music, anytime I hear it I sit back and sigh at the feeling it gives me ❤️
Hey. I am the same. Led Zep and I create dance. Can you send me a link where I can hear your music please?
Continue with these insightful and inspiring mini clinics! The music world needs you! You are leaving a legacy.
Daniel Barenboim has already left a legacy in ways I do not even know - but as an exponent of Beethoven, conductor of the best orchestras... He is also known for being married to Jacqueline du Pre who passed away far too soon (MS).
Breathtaking, fabulous....the man has soul...as important a musician who has ever lived
