    She did exceptionally well under circumstances where many people would have a nervous breakdown. I'm glad to see that Lang Lang has kept hold of the wisdom provided to him by Barenboim in regard to this piece. It's far too common for players to be overly 'romantic' with Beethoven, losing the rhythmic pulse of the music.

    2019 here, but I just wanna say I don't play the piano and I never knew how much difference it'll make between pressing the keys softly or hardly or with accent or flowy in each phrase/note... However, when Lang Lang plays the same keys I can ear the differences between the two playing style.

    • @JohnSmith-ei2pm
      @JohnSmith-ei2pm 4 года назад +3

      Playing the keys softly or with more pressure makes little if any difference. The difference between loud and soft is dependent on the speed with which the hammer hits the string. Thus pressing the keys down quickly makes more sound. Id est it is the kinetic energy of the hammer as it strikes the string which makes the difference.

    • @cloud-dv1wb
      @cloud-dv1wb 3 года назад

      @@JohnSmith-ei2pm If there is more pressure then they key goes down faster since the action of the key is the same... lmao

    • @JohnSmith-ei2pm
      @JohnSmith-ei2pm 3 года назад

      @@cloud-dv1wb You are mistaken. If one plays or pushes down the key slowly, even with great pressure, no sound will be produced. This is because the hammer will not travel far enough to strike the string. It will not reach the string because it will not be going fast enough. If one applies a great force to the hand it will accelerate rapidly (Newton's second law: acceleration is proportional to the force applied) thus arriving at the key bed quicker and faster. The hammer will thus move faster and with greater kinetic energy and a greater collision or sound will be produced. It has nothing to do with pressure. You can press as hard as you like, but unless you press quickly enough no sound will be produced.

    • @cloud-dv1wb
      @cloud-dv1wb 3 года назад

      @@JohnSmith-ei2pm What do you mean "Newtons second law" If you press the key with pressure it goes down faster and the hammer slams the strings harder. If u hit the key hard the hammer hits the strings hard and vice versa.

    • @JohnSmith-ei2pm
      @JohnSmith-ei2pm 3 года назад +1

      @@cloud-dv1wb Newtons Second Law states that the acceleration of a body is proportional to the force exerted upon it. If you use great pressure you may not necessarily apply great force until you reach the key bed by which time it is too late to matter. Indeed you may not get even the slightest sound. I suggest you find a pianoforte and press the keys slowly using all the pressure you wish. Then you will see what I mean. Forgive me for saying, I think you are confusing yourself with loose language. You say if you press the key with pressure it goes down faster. That is obviously not correct and you can easily verify that as I have said. Do not use language like 'hit the key hard'; it has no clear meaning. It may seem clear and simple, until one begins to think about it.

    I love watching masterclasses because some of these great performers have such clarity of vision that they can illuminate the most complex pieces and reduce them to their essence so that us ordinary mortals can finally get it. Now, with this girl, I was really perplexed: I could hear a lot of emotion in her playing and she has an obviously superb technique so I couldn't understand why the piece was giving me nothing, leaving me confused and underwhelmed. Then Lang Lang comes in with the most basic comment on timing and it suddenly all made sense! It's something I've seen a lot with young performers who have built an impressive technique and repertoire yet in the process they forget the basics, beat/pulse, tempo, clarity, balance between harmony and melody etc. A piano teacher told me a similar story about a Kavakos masterclass where someone had played a very technically demanding piece and Kavakos' comment was: I don't hear the pulse - you need to refocus on the strong beats etc Now with Lang Lang there have been so many masterclasses I've watched on youtube where he has really opened new horizons to the music while using the simplest of means and that is a delight and a real university for any music lovers and aspiring performers.

    ...explaining how to interpret emotions while hardly having lived.....both perhaps not realising this was her best moment ever to touch the lime light... of course when you look up to some-one to be validated - through hypergamic eyes to some-one with superstar status, there is and always will be better, better and better. How ever, her joy and spirit and purity of emotion already teared me up. I shared the emotion - until Lang Lang decided tot cut it Short! So much for Lang Lang... Love to hear him play. Giving masterclasses is the hardest thing one can do to judge those whom eagerly look for consent validity - approval and directions while perhaps - so much emotions further down the road of live, it never mattered in the first place any way...

    I’d also tell my pupils to read the sheet with their hearts and feel what the composer was trying to convey via the beats. Music is a language, the better you understand it, the better you can speak for the composer as well as yourself.

    Lang Lang and these young musicians are working hard to carry the legacy of classical music into our future, Unfortunately, there are negative comments about Lang Lang which were made by those people whom knows very little about music and sometimes full of jealousy. ironically, critics from these Lang Lang haters will infact prolong the legacies of classical music and Lang Lang even longer into the future.

    To: Bruno Escoto: She may have a positive problem of being too enthusiastic to apply his profoundness to the piece. I believe that she did listen and learn quickly and is enjoying the class. However, when one is critiqued in front of a house full of people, with her heart and soul of dedication left bleeding, she is "boot camping" and improving her skin toughening ability to be able to absorb this admonition whilst admiring the audience. Every note played was correct: it now needs to line up with Lang Lang's legacy's interpretation of this.
    Within the scope of classical music, life, and other salient aspects away from the piano, certain things become trite. One needs to worry regarding making a living from this. If this were easy, one could listen to criticism all day long -- as long as the bread and life's important things are taken care off. Who is going to care, anyway? -- except for the one whose stipends are secured for the mentoring of a masterclass, *making money to "make a mountain," with mental molehills in his mind.

    A message to the Lang Lang haters in the comment,
    I don't understand why you people don't like him but regardless, you guys have to admit that he does know his musical stuff and can play excptionally well. I get that people might get kind of a "cocky" person vibe from him, but who cares? He plays well and deserves the title as one of the best pianists out there. To the people in the comment who called Lang Lang a "clown" (You know who you are :)) either you are absolutely foolish or just purely jealous. He might not be as good as Barehoim, who taught him for a period of time, but you simply cannot compare another person's skill set and style of playing to another's.
    To the people, who are down to earth, and enjoy classical music as I do. I wish you a very pleasant reast of your day.

      I find Lang Lang the closest to modernization of classical music.
      Not those playing smooth criminal on violin, but him.
      He has a sensitivity and a more physical approach of music. Because times do change.
