    If you want the spacers, use Google. Walmart.com usually has them, though sellers change often.

      The engine light will set when the cat is only about 95% efficient instead of 100%. That's why I've used them on my cars. If the code comes back with the spacer on, then the cat is very inefficient and needs to be replaced

    My situation is different and I hope this works. I live in PA and i bought a used Buick Enclave that happens to be a ULEV CA car. I get a P0420 code. Just found out all three cats were replaced. I still get the code because the cats that were installed were NOT the ULEV CA cats. So hoping that installing a spacer gets the downstream sensor out of the exhausts direct flow, gives me a better (lower) reading and tricks the ECM to think that everything is good. Because those cats are like $1000 each to replace

Luckily I was Able to permanently register my vehicle in Montana which does not require smog, however I still want to turn off the CEL light.

    Reading all the comments from people not knowing whether to install this before or after the cat got me 🤣.. Some real special people out there.
    What I wanted to know is would something like this help prevent a check engine light with an aftermarket downpipe that is bigger and has a high flow cat..
    My turbo keeps melting OEM cats, I got two replaced under warranty, now my warranty is expired I'm thinking I might just put a 3'' downpipe with a high flow cat but I don't want any CEL's because that might trip the engine into limp mode.

  • @HailAnts
    @HailAnts 11 месяцев назад +5

    I can verify that these do indeed work. Check engine light goes off and stays off.
    As far as 'getting away with it' goes, I can't speak for California, but in New York all inspectors do is plug into the OBD2 port. If there's no persistent check engine codes, it passes. Mechanics don't care about anything else..

      Do you need to put the spacer only at downstream sensor or on upstream and downstream?

    • @schwuzi
      @schwuzi Месяц назад +1

      @@disturbator Only downstream/after the cat. The upstream sensor measures your air/fuel ratio. If you mess with that signal your car won't run right.
      The second O2 sensor measures the activity of the catalytic converter. You want the spacer there so your car thinks the cat is fine even if it isn't.
      It's a hack job but it can help you pass inspection if they don't look to closely.
      If your cat is clogged up then it can lead to burned up valve seals because of the increased backpressure. If your car burns a lot of oil and you have a faulty cat then that's what's probably causing the issue. It's a cat and mouse game to find that fault. Were you burning oil for some reason and that's why you cat clogged up or the other way around? Not nice to diagnose these issues and generally a lot of work (and money).

    • @schwuzi
      @schwuzi Месяц назад +1

      @@disturbator It depends if your one remaining cat is clogged or not.
      Why did you leave that one in?
      There is also 90 degree/right angle spacers that might better suit your needs. They can help when there is no cat at all.
      The permanent solution would be to have your ECU reprogrammed by a tuning shop so the errors are gone. Though that's way more expensive than one of these little spacers.

      @BigBensCarsAndCycles  18 часов назад

      @wr_replayzz5937 if the cat is below efficiency enough to set a engine light, it's possible the emissions will be above a threshold for it to fail emissions. It's not a guaranteed fail

  • @AnonymousCaveman
    @AnonymousCaveman 16 дней назад

    My car they recommended to do this (I'm getting a 90 degree angle) and they said to try it due to the cat being a new one (they don't make the originals anymore) but it would confuse the sensor and ECU MIL unit to think there is a problem with the cat, however doing my MOT in the UK where they do emissions checks, they stated that the cat was actually fine and the O2 sensor just couldn't understand what was happening. So I'm hoping when I do this, it fixes the issue.

      P2099 and P2097 mean that your system is running LEAN, NOT "rich", and that the ECU has commanded as far RICH as it is allowed to go, and the exhaust is STILL too lean.
      The spacers will do NOTHING for those codes, and WILL just make the problem worse.
