What’s your favourite example of worldbuilding / tying things up neatly in this era?
For me some noteworthy ones are:
    Gwen and Gwenyth’s genetic multiplicity
Elton mentioning all of the alien incursions he had witnessed
Wilf ending up being Donna’s grandad
The Helicarrier, I mean cloud base, I mean the Valiant returning in S4

I miss RTD's "mystery box" foreshadowing for the seasons. Even the single mention of "there is something on your back" in Fires of Pompeii. And i dont know if it was intentional, but "burn with me" in Smith and Jones and 42. He did them in better ways than Moffett. Though I do like the cracks in the universe in series 5. After that, no. Just no.

Can almost smell Disney fancying RTD for Marvel or Star Wars. I would say he is on an extended job interview with this run of DW. He knows how to make a show red hot on a budget, and they desperately need that - he also knows how to build a franchise … if he doesn’t screw it up I can see him being a very in demand commodity. Already I can see that these specials are an audition for a movie, and good for him.

I just really want to make sure this shared Whoniverse isn't spread to thin, or become over-saturated like the MCU. Yes, a UNIT spin-off would be cool, and I don't know, maybe we get some one off's like a series with the eight doctor and some other stuff, but don't over do it. Doctor Who fans have plenty of content to hold them over between series like novels, comics, and audio adventures, not to mention the 60 years of TV episodes they can always go back and re-visit. So these spin-offs need to appeal to more then just the handful of Classic Who fans who want to see Nyssa, Teagan, and Ace team up to stop a Sitheen Secret Invasion. These shows, and potential mini-series need to be deployed carefully, thoughtfully, and have an actual reason for existing. Just like how Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures explored different sides to the world, and had there own target audience. Ideally, you want people who never really cared about Doctor Who, to get into it because they really enjoyed one of the spin-offs, not just the other way around.

I feel the Star Trek Universe is a better example, their current raft of shows are all quite unique
Strange New Worlds is the traditional episodic style Trek
Discovery is the super cinematic, serialised Trek
Picard was the nostalgia fest Trek
Prodigy is the Clone Wars-esque, for Kids, Trek (though is good enough for all audiences)
Lower Decks is the 30 minute animated comedy sitcom (though it has a lot more going for it than that)
They also limit the number of concurrent series too, instead of endlessly putting out new series, making it impossible to keep up. All the series take place in the same shared universe, but they don't rely on each other, so people arent expected to watch all of them to enjoy one of them.

Doctor Who actually had a time skip issue due to Series 1. It skipped 1 year ahead when Rose went missing. So Series 1 was released in 2005 but set in 2005-2006. Series 2 was released in 2006 but set in 2007, series 3 was released in 2007 but set in 2008 (except the main section of Blink which is technically a flashback to 2007 and the ending is actually present day 2008). Series 4 was released in 2008 but set in 2009. Then the specials were released in 2009 but also set in 2009. This is what fixed the time skip. As only Planet of the Dead and The End of Time were set in present day, it was easy to have the timeline fixed this way. (I suppose this would mean that Planet of the Dead is set during Series 4 but it's a time travel show so why not have 2 different Doctor's simultaneously)

6:15 While there is a disadvantage to not have something to use as a reference, having to make everything up yourself, it's also an advantage in not having the baggage/expectations, too. Torchwood just needed to figure out what it wanted to be (tone, theme, etc.) and could go ahead, same with Sarah Jane Adventures - RTD (or whomever) decided one would skew to the adults while the other would skew for the younger audience, letting the flagship remain in the middle (not a bad idea, really), which helped decide certain things (and they did still pull some things from Doctor Who).
23:15 I'm definitely of two minds about this idea. I appreciate them acknowledging the continuity of character (remembering and having affection for certain characters or things, etc.) but also feel like it's reasonable to treat the change as if the Doctor's becoming a new person because they really do - no 2 Doctors are the same, even if they share aspects (and core traits, generally), and the end of an era deserves that acknowledgement. I don't think it needs to be as rigid as New Who made it (with Moffatt's era generally eschewing RTD's characters/worldbuilding, outside of a few items, then Chibnall doing the same when he took over, almost acting like a sequel to Classic Who, mostly ignoring the last two eras until he brought in Captain Jack and the Fugitive Doctor), but a change in Doctors should still be treated like a moment and a shift (I think both RTD and Moffatt did well within their own eras, with 9 to 10 and 11 to 12, as there were some changes between the Doctors but not as much the tone, etc.)
25:50 I disagree that undoing the Snap (and just having the heroes remember) would've been better - I think the problem is not in the decision to keep the "Blip" period, but rather the failure to really use the "Blip" as a story point as well as they could've. Both WandaVision and Hawkeye give us fantastic moments stemming from it, and the Flagsmashers could've really highlighted some stuff about the period if written better, but I think one other way the MCU could have addressed it better was...not to skip it. Rather than put Ant-Man & The Wasp (mostly a prequel/sidestory to Infinity War) and Captain Marvel (entirely a prequel) in the middle of Infinity War and End Game meant we don't spend any time in the Blip so we don't really understand what it was like (I suppose things like The Leftovers might leave an idea, with some exposition post-title card in End Game), but that was a great spot for a Disney+ series or a Shang-Chi introduction movie, or Ms. Marvel, etc.: "with a number of heroes gone, new heroes rise up in a world devastated by the Snap". Instead, we just got very minimal references to it because of the production timeline and secrets and not wanting to really make waves for everything.
26:30 Yeah, I agree that A Good Man Goes to War would've benefitted from some older, familiar faces from past Who, though I do think the inclusion of Jenny, Vastra, and Strax was a good idea because it's nice to think the Doctor's had adventures we didn't see/know about. I'm not sure that I would've liked spinoffs and a broader universe in that era (they can be tiring), but I can definitely see the argument for it and I'm not against it. Class was...better than I expected, but not as good as it should've been, and it did feel disconnected from the general universe (especially because it ignored past Coal Hill setup) - I think one of the problems with it is that it's not a spinoff, it's just a series that happens to be (tangentially, vaguely) connected to Doctor Who, almost like it was a different idea they just added some DW branding to (not unlike a couple Cloverfield movies). If this was how Clara was written out (at some point before "dying"), deciding to stay in her "normal"/"real life" as a teacher, then it might've worked, but instead there is no real connective tissue outside of some backstory and a couple terms.
30:44 I think this quote may be the thing that clinched the gig for RTD, with the BBC execs salivating at the idea of "shared universe franchise" money. I'm afraid of it, really, as diluting the brand by just doing a ton of spinoffs can really destroy interest. Especially due to budget and other creative restraints - Big Finish audio dramas and comics may be the best way to have these things.

Excellent summary. Nice, nice summary. And good choice to highlight Turn Left.
I’m still more forgiving of Class, though. Following the lockdowns, I’ve continued to dive into a decade-long list of to-do watchlists and re-watchlists … and the surprising thing is how good some “iceberg” series are to watch on their own, having broken off the main shelf of ice and drifted away. I found the same thing with Star Trek Enterprise, another series poorly received - the trick with these iceberg series is to come to them at a totally different time in your life, and not in the middle of a binge-watch of associated shows. Completely on its own, and completely with its own flavour, shows like Class and Star Trek Enterprise introduce you to new tone. And new tone is important, right? Just as true as with Jodie Whitaker, and Chris Chibnall’s different style of outdoor-and-landscape visual language. His picks for incidental music and directors set a new direction and showed us what could be … but you have to give these ideas a chance in isolation.

Great video but I think credit has to go to Quintin Tarantino for creating a shared universe on film, I know his films are loosely connected and don't have many crossovers but the concept of some films being real life within the tarantinoverse and others being films within the same universe was ahead of its time for cinema. Also this probably doesn't really count but the creators of cheers/wings/Fraser also did a very good job at creating a shared universe with regular character crossover

IIRC, RTD actually referenced that Doctor Who would benefit from taking a leaf out of their book, shortly before coming back for RTD2

I would have been extremely disappointed if the MCU undid the time jump at the end of the movie because it would remove the consequences of losing in part 1. I mean sure, some people might still be dead, but that's actually even messier as nobody except them can even begin to explain how this perfectly alive character is just suddenly dead now during at point in time that has no longer happened.

They should do a reversal to get the new spin off's off the ground.
Instead of having the shows exists for a few seasons and then do a team up, they should do a team up and branch off spin off shows from the characters that test well.
And who should be the villain? I think The Valeyard would work perfectly. Have him target people who've worked with The Doctor before like Gwen, UNIT and the Bannerman Road Gang etc and have them all brought together to stop him. Give him some kind of world ending plan that even The Doctor has trouble with and it could re-ignite the idea that other people have to take up the defence of Earth when The Doctor's not around.
Have Gwen head up a new Torchwood team under UNIT with Kate as a Nick Fury type and have Luke Smith, Clyde and Rani bring together a new Bannerman Road team with Luke taking over from Sarah Jane and Clyde and Rani as mentors to the new kids in the group.

Your feelings don't change the fact it did it before Who though.
When NuWho first came out Stargate was literally the biggest Sci-Fi series that was still on the air at that time. Doctor Who probably saw that shared universes with interconnecting plots could work because SG-1/Atlantis were doing it. Though I will grant you that the extent of the interconnecting plots wasn't as big as it was in Doctor Who (no big climax happening in both shows), but each show did feed into each other in ways that wasn't problematic if you only watched one show (*cough* unlike the Arrowverse).
And I'm aware that Stargate wasn't the first to do it either. Star Trek was doing it, and so was Buffy/Angel. I just don't know to what extent as I don't stan those shows. (big Stargate stan).
