    Thanks for the nice comments about the Adventure Games. I was lead programmer on them, and it was an absolute dream come true for me to work on them, as a lifelong Who fan. Also, I met my wife when she came in to do animation on the Gunpowder Plot, so they had a pretty major impact on my life too 😀

      Any fun stories about the development of those games?

    • @James-Sutherland
      @James-Sutherland Год назад +218

      @@crashbash8549 To to honest, the development itself wasn't a huge amount of fun for the most part - it was a very small team with a tight schedule (that couldn't move, as we had to release the episodes in time with the TV stories). The main reason we went for a single large story for the second season was the difficulty of essentially making four games at once for the first one :)
      That said, we got to visit the then-new TARDIS set in Wales, which was a great day. And, for a classic Who fan like me, it was amazing looking round the prop store. For some reason, they had the 5th Doctor's TARDIS prop in there, along with loads of other stuff. There was also a press day they did at our studio where they brought journalists in to see the game and also watch a preview of Time of Angels before transmission. So I got to watch that in our work meeting room before it was on TV. They also brought the paradigm Dalek props out to Sheffield train station, and had Nick Briggs voicing them live talking to commuters, which was a lot of fun.
      The video mentions the voice acting in the final episode - that one was directed by Gary Russell and recorded at Moat, where Big Finish do their recording, which probably helped a fair bit. I'm not sure how/where the others were recorded.

Also just wondering if you could disclose any details on the potential stories of the second series? @@sircampbelltenson7297 I'm not aware of any other plans for season 2. There may have been discussions internally at the BBC but certainly by the time we started working on Gunpowder Plot, it was always the plan to just do one longer episode for that season rather than the four we'd done previously. We didn't have other games planned that got cancelled or anything like that.

    Can we all agree that after the Story Pack on LEGO Dimensions, the BBC and LEGO should have just done a full blown LEGO Doctor Who game? Was the biggest love letter to the franchise any game has managed, and a full game of that style would have been amazing.

    • @simeonyves5940
      @simeonyves5940 8 месяцев назад

      @@plantainsame2049 IIRC, in Extended Universe Dalek Chronology the Silver and Blue "Skaro" Daleks actually came after the (Grey and Black) Renegade Daleks! so they had a lot of upgrades from them, hence why they could Levitate, just not very high or for very long as it drained their power battery banks too much..so Stairs were still a no go , but, originally restricted purely to the Ruined Bunkers and the New Dalek Dome, some downgrades as well, such no Internal Nuclear Reactors for power like the Earlier Renegades, hence the need for the little "Dish" on the back to Receive Broadcast Power. Hence why they could Levitate for a short while to a low height while the Renegades couldn't, but Renegades did not need the Dish on their Backs and could use their Guns more Frequently, an inboard Nuclear Reactor rather than a Battery-Bank like on the Skaro Dalaks.
      So the 1960's "Skaro" Daleks are sort of the "Missing" Mutation between the Renegades and the (White and Gold) Imperial Daleks, as Davros based some of the Upgrades for the Imperials on the Upgrades for the (by then Extinct due to the events of "The Daleks") "Skaro" Daleks, with the Bronze "Time War" Daleks being the Successor to the Imperials, then the Paradigm Daleks, which also attacked an Alternative Universe that featured a Human "Doctor" ...thus making the Peter Cushing Films Canon, but only via AU!, being their Successors based, as were the Renegade and Skaro Daleks on Pure Kaled Genes rather than a Mix of Kaled, Human, and Thaal Genes like the Imperial and Bronze Daleks.
      There is also a "Fandom" Mutation that combines the more "Tank" like Bronze "Time War" Dalek Design with the "Imperial" Color scheme, (and it looks Incredible!) so possibly the Missing Mutation between the Imperial and the Time War Daleks.
      Dalek Lore is proper Complicated.. and that's before we come to "The Abomination" that is the "Special Weapons Dalek" ! Mutated Even Further and Sent Insane by the Massive Radiation Backwash from it's Nuclear Barrage Cannon, resulting in a Mutant so utterly unhinged that the Other Dalek's are terrified of it and Refuse to go near It (Hence the Rust and the Dents and the Oil and Grease Stains and General "unmaintained" Appearance that it has), and would even Exterminate it (as "Impure" and "Not a Dalek" due to the Extra Mutation from the Gun's Radiation) if not for the Emperor Dalek (Davros) Personally Ordering its Survival!
      There are also the "false daleks" from Jubilee (Daleks. Do. NOT. Sing!) , Old Disused Cases taken from Dead "Skaro" Daleks that lost the 1903 Dalek War against Earth (6th Doctor Big Finish Extended Universe) in Another Universe, and controlled by Mutilated and Brainwashed Slaves (People with Dwarfism and other Disabilities) to think and act like a comedy "Music Hall" Dalek for the Amusement of a Dictator and His Wife in a Terrible, Nazi Germany Style (like in "inferno") , "English Empire" that came about as the Result of the 1903 Dalek War.. if you really want to get Complicated.
      Yet, it does explain why 1960's Dalek's could just about Levitate.

    I always thought that the best way to make a Doctor Who game would be to make it an open world RPG with loads of different locations to explore from the show. There would be a character creation system so you could make yourself be the newest incarnation of the Doctor, or you could design your character to look like your favorite Doctor from the show. There would be multiple branching quests that you can complete in a number of different ways to complete your objectives. You can use persuasion to solve problems diplomatically; you could use your hacking and stealth skills to avoid enemies and solve puzzles. You could find and recruit companions to accompany you on your journey, or you could go it alone. Regardless, the choice is yours and you could carve your own Doctor Who adventure!

      After spending way too much time playing around with Doctor Who mods for Garry's Mod(which are still the best video game Who content), I agree. These, like the really fun to fly and completely functional Tardis, would work so well in a true open world RPG.
      There are even some games that have figured out how to deal with open world time travel(No Time is one that comes to mind, but it's the simpler one), there really is nothing that'd stop a dedicated studio with today's technology.

    Final Fantasy XIII-2 had a time travel mechanic which I think would suit Doctor Who completely... Where you can basically travel to multiple timelines whenever you feel like, and when you return it being as if you never left... So you could have different quests and storylines happening concurrently (but, obviously, main quests being the focus to keep you following the plot). But I think a game where you have two or three stories you can switch between when you feel like or when it gets too difficult, all building to a final overarching plot, could be really really cool

    Wow, the Lego Dimensions stuff is genuinely really impressive, it looked really fun and creative, I’d love to see a full LEGO Doctor Who game since I love LEGO games and Doctor Who. I really loved seeing all the old references, like Davros being in the barbecue-dalek from Remembrance with the 7th Doctor. It was so awesome to see some more great acting by Capaldi, the LEGO animations were really smooth, as a fan that really warmed my heart! Also, bonus props to the Jodie games for name dropping Spirodon, tears an obscure Classic Who reference that I loved to see.
    The adventure games also seemed really good, and I’m curious about The Eternity Clock, I heard about them years ago but never really had a chance to try them, but now I definitely want to give them a go. After years of Chibnall, I’m desperate for some good early-revival Who writing, and it’s really awesome to see Matt Smith and companions again, they’re written and acted just like they’re from an episode and I just love it, even when it’s through computer graphics. I think if I’d had them as a child I would’ve loved all of them, it really felt like going back and playing some “lost episodes” from the golden age of revival Who, and it really made me miss those days as a kid where I first watched those episodes when they were new.
    Considering the state of Doctor Who on TV, I’d really love to see more adventure games created starring the older Doctors, or even computer animated adventures, I know that’s basically what the Big Finish audio dramas are, but I never got into them since they don’t have any visual element. I think that could be a great way to give us some new awesome stories with our favourite characters.

Only problem is, those sorts of games are already pretty rare on account of how intensive and time-consuming they are to develop, so the realistic odds of seeing one from a _licensed_ property are about 0.00000001%.

  • @elise205
    @elise205 Год назад +6

    Corrections (because I have been obsessed with Doctor Who for longer than I can remember):
    Daleks were first seen going up stairs in 1988. However, Daleks have been climbing stairs since the 60s, as in Dalek Invasion of Earth, humans run up stairs to escape Daleks, it cuts to them running away down the street, and then cuts back to the Daleks at the top of the stairs (without giving clues as to how they managed it).
    The third game on the BBC Micro didn't have Daleks or K9 due to the fact that the BBC does not own the Daleks or K9 - not due to the game being a Doctor Who reskin of a different, unreleased game.
    The Dalek Emperor was first seen in the 60s story Evil of the Daleks, which is a TV story (and the last time Daleks were seen until the mid 70s). The Dalek Emperor would reappear in 1988, but it's not the same Dalek (Davros usurped the Emperor off screen, and the giant white Dalek structure he rides in during the boss battle in Lego Dimensions is how he looked when he was Emperor).
    You called them "Saltarans" - they're Sontarans.
    Amy in Evacuation Earth likely has the Sonic Probe her older self had in The Girl Who Waited.
    Despite these mistakes, thanks for the video!

    I’m surprised you were ballsy to say that Jodie’s run took a dip. I mean I totally agree but I just figured you’d stay away from that lol.
    Also I love doctor who so this is cool to see.
    EDIT: So also the best game is just doctor who simulacra?
    Neat

      @@MichaelM28 I mean I think the quality of it is too overhated imo. Well expect for the timeless child. But like I don’t think the episodes are really bad per say. They’re like popcorn theater where you can turn your brain off and enjoy it if you don’t stop and think about what’s going on. But I love the show bc it’s not that. It’s clever and has all these great ideas and cool stories and cool characterization and can get quite philosophical all of which are just not there in Jodie’s run lol.

      It’s only ballsy for Jon because he’s such a kind person. “Jodi worst doctor” is the most common Who take on RUclips. He’s right that it’s not her fault though.

    51:20 This is why in most games when a non cutscene conversation takes place I stop dead in my track to not risk running into a cutscene or something else that will cut off the dialogue.
