    Just to clarify something for everyone here, as this is a common mistake made often by many people. A prop gun is often (but not always), a completely functional firearm. Guns that are loaded with and fire blanks are real firearms. They are referred to as prop guns to clarify their role on set.

Supposedly, every single person who was going to be in the scene had to sit in a circle and pass every single gun that was going to be used for the scene around the circle, and each of them had to confirm that it was filled with blanks, or empty. Or in the case of it being a revolver you could easily check the casing (for the dimpled primer). • @slicinndicin7546
    @slicinndicin7546 2 года назад +2789

    As someone who has worked with blank firearms before, this story boggles my mind. Firstly, there is almost never a need to even possess live rounds on a hollywood set. Why in the world were they even there to begin with? The majority of "blank" guns are either dedicated prop guns or real firearms that have been modified (typically there is a plug that narrows the diameter of the barrel or a ramped barrel; this is needed because blank rounds do not produce the required force to blow back a slide, etc. We also use plugs to change how the muzzle flash is perceived). So my question is, how did they let a (presumably) unmodified firearm with live rounds slip into the hands of Alec Baldwin? I don't get it. This is either the biggest mistake in history or there is foul play involved. I don't understand how anybody with a shrivel of self respect or professionality could let this happen. It's unbelievable.

    • @SavageMontreal
      @SavageMontreal 2 года назад +44

      It's a western. Considering the time period, it may be difficult to obtain weapons of the era, let alone from someone who will allow you to modify them so they no longer function (many are collector's items). Actual bullets would be needed to place in the chambers of a revolver so they don't look empty. If one of these becomes lodged in the barrel, as it did with Brandon Lee, then blanks could push it the rest of the way out and into someone else.

      Perhaps had anyone on this set taken one of the many firearms safety courses offered by the NRA or GOA, this may have been avoided. But we all know why firearm experts are not consulted or employed in Hollywood, don’t we? That might make give the impression that firearm advocacy organizations take firearm use seriously as a safety concern, and that is very unhelpful to the political narratives we wish to advance here in Hollywood.
      There’s no deflection here that works. A woman is dead because these assholes were playing with guns. Had I been in charge and people were target shooting with live cartridges in a set piece, I’d fire their asses so fast it would have made their heads spin. There would be a real gunsmith and firearm safety professional handling the firearms, not some diversity hire daddy’s little girl playing at being a badass.

    Info for anyone curious: Live rounds, on a movie set, are any rounds that have a charge. Blanks are called live rounds, as the only other bullets are dummy rounds. Blanks have a case and powder charge but no tip, and dummies have a tip and case, but no powder. A 'cold' gun, usually means it's loaded with dummy rounds. If a dummy round gets caught in the chamber, followed by a blank, you basically put all the parts together to make a bullet. It's the same thing that happened on The Crow. Definitely a complete fuck up from their prop department as a whole, since there's about 3-4 people who are supposed to check off on weapons during a multi-step process. Not to mention that it's standard to reset and inspect the weapons after every single discharge.

    As opposed to replying to every misinformed comment, I'm just going to leave one here and hope people see it.
    1. "He should have checked the gun himself and treated it as if it was loaded."
    If we were talking about a range accident or something similar, I'd 100% agree with you. However, this was a movie set, and therefore a more complicated environment. Making sure the gun was safe to use wasn't as simple as visually confirming the gun was empty. A combination of dummy rounds and blanks were being used for the scene. Particularly dummy rounds are impossible to tell apart from real rounds while they are in the gun. It takes an experienced professional (i.e. the armorer) examining them outside of the gun to tell them apart. Not to mention that actors are typically encouraged not to check their own weapons for this very reason, because they do not likely have the experience required. As far as him pointing the gun in a dangerous direction, the shot they were working on called for a shot to be fired directly at camera. He wasn't pointing the gun anywhere he was explicitly told not to.
    2. "He's listed as a producer on the film, so he's at least partially liable."
    Being a "producer" can mean multiple things. Quite frequently, big name actors will get "producer" credit simply because they receive a portion of the box office as payment as opposed to a flat salary. It doesn't always give them any actual authority on set.

    The fact that there was three more "accidental" discharges of a weapon beforehand shows how inexperienced the weapons master was. You would figure that after _one_ faulty discharge, they would actually use their brain and check the weapon to prevent it from happening again, or make sure that it was an actual prop gun, and not the real firearm. The death of the cinematographer was both unnecessary, and completely preventable. Charlie is right about how no one on the set seemed to care, and how they rushed to film this movie. If you gather an inexperienced crew, directors, and producers, something catastrophic is bound to happen. Not only is the cinematographer's family suffering from this, but Alec himself is distraught as well. Imagine dying because of someone else's ignorance, or living with the guilt of killing someone, realizing that this could have been prevented by a simple examination of the weapon.

You can't just shoot the gun until the rounds are gone, sometimes live rounds get stuck behind something in the chamber. Why isn't it labeled as a prop gun and just never have live ammunition touch it? Better yet, if you're gonna be a dick and insist on using the gun at a shooting range offset or something, then why not fully take the gun apart and make 100% certain that there are no live rounds in there?

    The Brandon Lee incident was when they took a bullet apart emptied the powder out and then put it back together. They loaded the revolver with these “fake” rounds so you could see the actual bullets as they were doing a shot where you would notice if they were blanks. Well it seems to gun was fired and the primer propelled the bullet into the barrel but not enough to have it leave the barrel.
    They changed out the ammo and no one noticed one of the casings was missing a bullet and no one checked the barrel. They loaded blank rounds and then did a scene where they fired directly at Brandon and the force of the gunpowder shot the bullet(a .44 magnum round) out of the barrel, striking, and killing Brandon.

    A fact that is often left out of stories about this shooting is that the movie was a WESTERN being filmed with REVOLVERS. This is really important because dummy rounds (or snap caps) are often used for close ups in westerns with revolvers. This is so the camera can show the real lead bullets in the exposed parts of the cylinder, or show the hero loading rounds into the gun one at a time (think the gun loading scenes from Westworld). Brandon Lee died because they were filming with a revolver specifically, which started the chain of events. There are more ways things can go wrong when using dummy rounds with revolvers because a round with powder and a real primer may look identical to one of the dummies.

    • @Skrenja
      @Skrenja 2 года назад +17

      That's not true. CGI muzzleflashes still look like garbage 99% of the time, blanks are still far superior. Also, there are rare circumstances when it's advantageous to fire live rounds on set. If you need to do a scene of shooting an inanimate object or target full of holes it's much easier and economical to do it for real rather than placing costly, tedious squibs everywhere. With the amount of press this is getting, and the amount of casual eyes seeing just how ridiculous film crew working conditions could be, I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being a big moment for film crew Unions, and frankly that’s a good thing.

    A lot of action movies actually use real guns with blanks, a lot of it is for presentation to the audience, so that it looks and feels real, for the actors and the for those watching. There is supposed to be their a weapons master or an armorer on set to inspect and check the tools and props used to make sure they are clean and safe to use.
    However there are a large number of productions that have minor live fire mishaps all the time, because the crew are overworked, underpaid and exhausted from long back to back shoots, with little to no breaks, and it leads to events like this.
    And in case you didn’t know the union for movie set crews or IOSTSI have been threatening to go on strike for months if working conditions and other stuff industry related problems arnt changed.

      There are blank guns designed to only hold and fire blanks for that, using real guns instead of fetching blank guns or just doing a little addition to the barrel so there's no way a bullet could actually get through (as it's better for a barrel to blow than someone to get capped) is just being cheap, even cheaper is not giving everyone on the set a crash course on firearms safety and not. dismissing. blanks. as. harmless.
      If anyone is willing to give an answer on why the fuck real bullets where even within five miles from the set that would be the cherry on top, still, even if for that there's noone else to blame but the bullet fairy dispensing bullets to hungry hungry guns knowledge on proper handling would've helped preventing that.

    I was in the military. One negligent discharge without injury or death could be an eventual career ender. Add injury or death and someone will lose their career sooner rather than later. We went to great lengths to ingrain firearms discipline and weapons safety. Baldwin is the Producer so he does bear responsibility beyond just pointing and pulling the trigger. In the military one of the most dangerous things we did in training was to conduct force on force maneuver training because we used blanks to engage the opposing force with a laser on the muzzle that would engage a buzzer on the targeted soldier. The possibility of accidentally mixing in live rounds was a recognized risk because it has happened several times over the years (although not often). We mitigated it by inspecting all soldiers, all bags and all magazines for live ammo before entering the training area. Sounds like no risk mitigation measures were in place on the scene of Rust.

      A movie set isn't a military training ground though. So many people are so quick to blame Baldwin, when he was clearly just following a well established filming practice. I think it makes a lot of sense to me think that Alec was handed the gun by someone who should have already checked it. I'm not sure what him being a producer has to do with anything tbh. He was filming a scene where he had to fire at the camera. He was just doing his job at the end of the day.

      Exactly this - your comment deserves more likes. I feel like negligence of that degree can only happen on account of gross disregard for rudimentary firearms safety guidelines, and no one trained on-set to correct them. Anyone with any kind of firearms training would have been able to practice better trigger safety and have been cognizant of the type of ammunition they are loading. The fact that no one bothered to check the gun getting fired is criminal - especially in light of the history of misfires.

    Film set conditions across the board are in dire need of some improvement. I've worked as a crew member (albeit breifly) on a film set with relatively good working conditions. At least compared to other sets. But even then I found it pretty hellish. 12-14 hours straight just working, doing heavy lifting with film equipment without being allowed to sit down for more than ten minutes, in sometimes downright oppressive weather. Not to mention the driving to and from random locations that can be in the middle of nowhere everyday, just to get back up in six hours and repeat the process. The fact that most crewmen are accustomed to that type of work, but STILL felt the need to walk off set speaks volumes. Fucked up situations like this can really start to kill my passion for film.

    Here's what I know from my knowledge:
    When people were asking and wondering "Why not just use prop or fake gun???"
    Believe it or not, most mid-tier budget action movies tend to actually use an actual real gun, even The Matrix used real guns.
    Some of the reasons are;
    1) Prop guns are more expensive and harder to sell again than their real counterpart. And the departments tend to choose real guns since it's cheaper and easier to sell again after the production of the movie is done.
    2) Authenticity. They want anything to feel as real as it could be (recoils, weight, sounds, details)

      Prop guns in hollywood movies are almost always rented to specialized staff like the set armorers who are employed to keep the set safe, therefore no need to sell them on the open market (even if it were possible or legal). There's actually a couple outfits in California who specialize in making real guns into blank firing movie guns, such that they will never fit a real bullet into the chamber and therefore cannot fire a real bullet ever again. This is especially true of prop machine guns, as they are still classified as machine guns and require a special license to even possess them, especially places like California.
      There would be obvious exceptions, such as if the scene called for showing a gun being loaded--loading a blank into a revolver would be obvious to anyone who saw it, so in that case you'd use a cartridge with a bullet but no propellant, and a real gun with the firing pin ground off so even if a live round somehow got into it, it still wouldn't go off.
      Finally, weighted plastic 'blue guns' can be painted to look incredibly real on camera.
      What happened here was a failure on every possible level.

    I remember reading something about The Crow and the death of Brandon Lee... Apparently (correct me if I'm wrong), they modified live rounds to be blanks, which have cardboard bullets instead of lead, but somehow, for some reason, they'd loaded a live round into the chamber (I think they were actually shooting in some scenes), and a lead bullet got lodged in there, so when they went to fire a blank, it caused that lead tip to shoot out... I think that's how it went...
    But still, this caused most movie sets to be more careful about this kind of thing. Like the old adage, treat every gun as if it's loaded, the #1 rule in gun safety. They're supposed to use forced perspective and never point it directly at a person. I know we shouldn't blame Alec for this, but man... Like you said, it was such a preventable tragedy.

    the working conditions on film sets are abysmal. My close friend was working on set of a Netflix show being filmed in the uk.
    Every day he would wake up at around 4 in the morning to be on set. He was more often than not expected to work over-time, and because of the long drive, he literally wasn't able to make it home, sleep, and drive back the next day, so during his employment there, spent most of his nights sleeping in his car. This was common enough that people had taken to taking coke just to stay awake during the day on set, something that he was lucky enough to be able to avoid himself.

    Due to this and many other things, after that gig wrapped he simply didn't want to continue working in the film industry. Its fucked up to me how we hear so much about working hard to get your foot in the door in the entertainment industry, but when you actually do you're just met with one of the most scummy/corner cutting/skirting the edge of legality work environments on the planet.
