Notice how I did not attack the rug doctor? I just pointed out a bad business model designed to make you a repeat customer. This is the whole reason for me making this video. Most manufacturer's do this to get repeat business. That business is in the form of more chemicals or the renting of the machines over and over again....not cool and definately not good for you the customer.
I recently purchased a Big Green Machine, I will try these tips. I used the manufacturer's instructions on my walkway, and another small room, and I am not happy with the results. Thank for the tips.
Wow! Someone gave me a Bissell cleaner. Of course, it being a Bissell, it doesn't work. But it does vacuum up the water good. So I've just been putting the water solution on first then vacuuming it up. Works good. So I figured this one out on my on.
Thanks for watching Jen. I hate seeing people get ripped off by these big corporations. As a professional carpet cleaner I end up coming in after the excessive soap has been added to the carpet. It literally takes 15 to 20 mins to extract all the soap the person left behind. People are often shocked when I ask them if they tried cleaning it themselves. They look horrified as if I was some sort of clairvoyant. This is the reason for the video. Glad I could help.
Frank Atwood makes sense....not only probably costs more to keep the carpet clean.....but all that soap being left behind can't be too good for the skin of babies, and younger kids etc....no matter how much I try to discourage him from it, I know my little brother practically lives on our carpet...playing around and when he plays videos games etc..... that could probably be irritating and/or drying to ones skin.
A rather good vid. with some sensible (Common sense) advice which is so obvious when you point it out. MANY thanks for this plain and simple advice which will save me £££ and Hours.
and THANK you, Mr Atwood, for accepting responsibility for this "child" of your analysis. I admire you for not posting this intellectual property and then leaving it to be an 'orphan'. Kindest regards.
Hi! Thank you for the video! I’ve never done this but hoping to use this before we move out of our rental. Please help me with these 2 questions: 1) How wet do u make the carpet with the pre-treatment spray? Or how much water/soap would you use for a bedroom area? 2) How long should I set aside for drying time? We need to leave the apartment right after we are done with this so can I leave it wet or wait for it to dry?
(July, 2019) I bought a new Bissell Pro Heat Essential from Target. I've not used it yet, but I'm definitely going to do what''s said in this video and see what the result will be. Makes quite a bit of sense.
For some reason it wont let me respond to your question. You can use a number of different soaps. Carpet cleaning is chemistry. Soluble and non-soluble. Your simply matching the PH of the soil in order to remove it. You need only three things soap, heat, and agitation. If your missing one double up on the other two. Yes you need water too...
Wow never wouldve thought it was like washing your hands. It makes sense. I will be trying it today/tomorrow and will come back for review of your technique.
Wow, glad I came across this. I plan on renting a carpet cleaner and most say to use the cleaner in the machine. I will try the diluted spray bottle technique since I am pretty sure it will work. I have a 12'X7' area rug I wish to clean. I've had it for 18 years and have never given it a really good cleaning. I thought of buying a new rug, but I have this really weird cat, who for some reason loves to lick the carpet. So, I have all of these small spots of clean carpet, all over the rug, just from my crazy cat licking the carpet. LOL. So I am sure that your method should do the job. Plus I am a little concerned for my cat, the less cleaner I need to use should be better for my nutty cat, because I know she will continue licking the carpet even after it's clean. I'll come back and let ya know how it turned out. Thanks again!!
thanks for the tips. Sounds like using a spray bottle is the way to go. How do i know how much to spray down? I've never done this and dont want to over or under spray the cleaning solution.
You need to dilute the water to soap solution like a pie chart. 1/4 soap to 3/4 water. Or 8 oz of soap to 1 gallon of water for bigger jobs. Only use clean hot water to extract for best results.
Thank you! I'll try this tomorrow. I wonder if I can make my own shampoo with products like resolve and the best products usually used for laundry, but since most companies are against this, I wonder if it's still possible to do so. Let me know if you can :)
The soap the rug doctor sells has brighteners in it. It bends the UV light to make the carpet appear cleaner. It yellows the carpeting over time. It is highly discouraged by Shaw Industries the largest carpet manufacturer in the world. I get my soap from a carpet cleaning store in Austin, Texas. It is synthetic like most modern soaps and PH balanced for routine cleaning. They also sell heavier PH soaps for restaurant grease etc. As for use, less is more...i dilute an 8oz cup into 1 gallon of soap.
Enzyme cleaners are usually for urine. The enzymes eat the salt crystals which are the building blocks of the urine. Carpet cleaning is basic ph chemistry balance the ph the dirt comes out...
I had my carpets professionally cleaned and now I have a residue that is making me have a sore throat and cough. Was going to rent the machine and just use hot water and vinegar to help remove the soap? Thoughts? Nice video
Do you recommend using a totally flexible rubber- type Carpet Rake ??(there is no metal in bristles). If so at what stage - after soap, or after final dry pass? Thanks for the video!
A good carpet rake should have plastic bristles. Most modern carpets are made from plastic...mine cost me $60 you can order one from most carpet cleaning supply chains. You rake after you extract. It is the last thing you do before setting up your fans to aid in drying.
I'm doing this tomorrow. Thanks for the great video! You're awesome. I have 2 questions: 1. In Las Vegas humidity is 0%, temp. is 90 degrees. Still no open windows? 2. Carpets seem to be "directed" one way (the threads lay typically toward one way). Does it matter which way I do the passes? Much thanks!
Thank you for this informative video. I tried to see if someone else asked this and didn't see that anyone had at least recently, so I am sorry if you've already answered this. Is it ok to make a pass with the diluted solution first, make a second pass with clean water, then a third pass as a dry run?
You can buy general solutions at homedepot or heavier ph ones for greasy Chinese Restaurant carpeting there also. Less soap is more...1 8oz cup to 1 gallon of water.
I hope that's the information I needed? I purchased a home and was told that the carpets had been "professionally cleaned". I believe this to be an untrue statement from the realtor! The master bedroom has a very strong odor of urine from the previous owner, an elderly person whom may of had a problem with incontinence. I hope I can deluge the carpet with white vinegar, letting it seep in, then using the vacuum from a Rug Dr rental unit to remove the liquid.
Cat Walker Vinegar will only mask the smell. You need to have the carpeting untucked and examine the damage. If it is really bad just get rid of the carpet. Several bottles of urine begone will only dent the surface. If it's bad animals will still use it. Hope this helps.
May not be the carpet cleaners fault if he is not told the nature of the staining. Many people will hire a professional carpet cleaner and just tell them to "clean the carpet' and want the cheapest price. If not told the nature of the staining or agreeing to a low price before asking to put in a lot of work to get the best result this is the end result.
I was wondering why my cleaning results were horrible. The carpet looked patchy like soap and dirt stayed in some areas. I decided to just use hot water for another run and my carpets came out way better! Machine is a Big Green.
How about using soap solution first for the first pass, then change it to hot clean water for the second pass, then a dry pass? That saves you from having to use a separate sprayer, no?
Use very little soap. They tell you the wrong amount on purpose. I use 1 cup 8 oz. Of soap to a gallon of clean water. Their tank is small so pre-mix your solution and add it accordingly, but always use clean hot water for the second pass. Then make a dry pass.
@@FrankAtwood Previous comments suggested 8oz cup per gallon or 1:4 ratio in case others may think 1/4 of a cup. About to have my first attempt with a Britex rental carpet cleaner in Australia, their formula claims to be double strength and recommended dose is 3 capfuls in 9 litres (2.4 US gallons). A 500ml bottle cleans up to 3 rooms (60m2) they say. Guessing I can still probably halve the amount - 1/2 capful to 3 litres spray bottle.
Hi Frank, one question, maybe I am missing something; If I only spray the solution on top, wouldn’t that prevent me from “deep” cleaning the carpet? It would seem to me that the solution only being lightly sprayed on top would prevent cleaning on anything but the surface. Thanks again and happy 4th!
You take a gallon jug of water pour 8 ounces of water into an 8 ounce cup. Then dump that water out of the cup and refill the cup with detegerent , then pour that detegerent back into the gallon jug. Put the cap on shake it up. Then pour it all into a garden pump sprayer. Solution is ready to use....Then fill the machine with nothing but clean hot water and now your ready to extract. Wait 10 min after spraying solution to give the soap time to bond with the dirt. Rinse as needed. Use a window fan or box fan and Air Conditioning to aid in drying time.
Hello frank I’m dying to know if you think there is a difference between a carpet extractor and a carpet cleaner ?! Thanks this would help me greatly to be honest
I owned a carpet cleaning business in Texas. The term extractor is an industry term. Think of a giant wet vac that can spray, possibly heat the on board water and then suction up that water after it has mingled with the dirt and carpet cleaning solution. It also has way more suction than a household cleaner. An extractor extracts solution and is usually used in combination with an agitation machine like the Rotovac. Looks like a buffer but has spray heads and suction ports. You would run this over the carpeting connected to the extractor to remove residue. Extractors are used to remove water and in the case of flood damage they are great for that too. Carpet cleaner is a generic term Bissell, Hoover, etc have coined. So when someone says extractor they are probably an industry professional. My equipment cost $7,000 dollars so yeah there is a big difference in function. While a Ferrari and a Hyundai are both cars and do the same job clearly one is of higher quality than the other. Hope that helped.
so the unit doesn't HEAT up the water to make it even hotter? so it's not as hot as a steam cleaner? do you know if any steam machine rentals i can use on carpet (i heard the eagle heats up to 300*F so too hot for carpet).
@@michelledatey You can but its more about ph balance. You need a soap that is ph balanced to what your trying to clean. plus hot water and agitation. Then you will have great success in removing the stain. If it is kool-aid or mustard forget it.. it cost hundreds of dollars and special chemicals to treat these types of stains. Red die requires a special red lifter solution. If its that bad just replace the carpet in that area.
Hi, thanks for the video. I’ve ordered a rug doctor spot cleaner to do my rugs (a new puppy in the house) my precious rugs smell SO bad it’s either try to clean them or throw them out. Do you advise the same procedure with the spot cleaner? And what is meant by a pass with water? It looks to me the dirty water in the carpet is being sucked up is the pass actually a rinse?
Hi Archie, thanks for watching. What I mean by a clean pass. Is no water just suction. You want to get as much water out of the carpet as possible. The rug doctors do not have a lot of suction like commercial cleaners so additio al passes without water are need.
Oh Wow this is amzing tip and makes so much sense!!! I have one question for you. As you answered already I have no other way of dispensing the soapy solution so will make a pass with the diluted solution first, make a second pass with clean water, then a third pass as a dry run using 1/2 of the recommended soap in the tank but can I also add some bleach? I will try a small area to ensure it doesn't damage but from the professional carpet cleaning point of view, what's your take on mixing the soap and bleach into the tank?
Would not mix bleach with any soap solution. Chemicals mixing.. you don't know what they might be. A couple years ago, I mixed water, ammonia & bleach---Actually I didn't mix them! The ceiling fans did! 60min later the fire dept showed up with resuscitators, followed by a trip to Emergency Care!!
So vaccuum, spray diluted soap onto carpets, leave for 10-15 minutes, then go over it with clean hot water in the rug doctor, then do the dry pass with no water, let the fans dry the carpet, dont open the windows. Ta!
White distilled vinegar and baking soda, a little water, and some elbow grease will get the spot almost neutral in terms of what animals can smell. They go in the same spot over and over because they smell the last creature that went there. Even 10% vinegar in water sprayed directly from a bottle onto the urine accident will completely neutralize the scent. Like he said: it’s Chemistry.
Great advice!! Thank you! I'm renting a machine tomorrow and so glad I saw this first!!

I love this video! Damn Corporations always screwing the little guys! Very helpful dude. I gotta share this stuff man. Thanks!

Fantastic video. I purchased a Bissell vacuum cleaner and followed these instructions. 👍👍👍👍
Hi! Thank you for the video! I’ve never done this but hoping to use this before we move out of our rental. Please help me with these 2 questions:
1) How wet do u make the carpet with the pre-treatment spray? Or how much water/soap would you use for a bedroom area?
2) How long should I set aside for drying time? We need to leave the apartment right after we are done with this so can I leave it wet or wait for it to dry?
Dude I didnt put the soap in, and my carpets look so nice! THANK YOU
Glad I could help! I ran a carpet cleaning business for the last 7 years. So I know a thing or two.
This actually gave me the confidence to go rent a carpet cleaning machine and think I’d be wasting my money!
This is why I made the video.
thank you for taking your time to make this video!!!
Your welcome, I will be making another soon please subscribe...
This is a great video. I really like how he teaches you step by step.
Wow never wouldve thought it was like washing your hands. It makes sense. I will be trying it today/tomorrow and will come back for review of your technique.
Thank You Frank! I am renting one tomorrow for a move out glad I saw this first. Very useful video!
David Banner thanks for watching.
I'm so glad I saw this video! Truly helpful!
did it work good?
Kelly S Thanks for watching Kelly. I wish you much success.
That was actually very informative!
Very helpful video, amazing tips. Thank you very much for this valuable information.
Great video Frank
Great video! Thank You!
Awesome video tutorial!
Thank you. I had ordinary consumers in mind when I made it.
thanks for the tips.
Frank, you da real MVP 🤘😍 Thanks man!
Thanks Elizabeth! Its because of great subscribers like you!
Thank you! I'll try this tomorrow. I wonder if I can make my own shampoo with products like resolve and the best products usually used for laundry, but since most companies are against this, I wonder if it's still possible to do so. Let me know if you can :)
Great video. Can you please educate us about detergents and chemicals as well
The soap the rug doctor sells has brighteners in it.
Thank you very much. Makes a lot of sense. Excellent advice. 👍🏼

MUST read before you rent a carpet cleaner. thank you!
This was great advice. Thank you so much
I'm happy to be of service.
What about using an enzyme cleaner to break up "grease" in the soap mixture. Good video, thank you.
Enzyme cleaners are usually for urine. The enzymes eat the salt crystals which are the building blocks of the urine. Carpet cleaning is basic ph chemistry balance the ph the dirt comes out...
@@FrankAtwood Thank you for your prompt reply.
@@eydimyers1654 Your Welcome!
I had my carpets professionally cleaned and now I have a residue that is making me have a sore throat and cough. Was going to rent the machine and just use hot water and vinegar to help remove the soap? Thoughts? Nice video
Sorry to hear that. If there is residue left over just use really hot water, only hot water.
My air-con has a dehumidify function. Would that help to dry the carpets more than just regular AC?
Yes, I prefer to put box fans on the carpet and move them hourly.
@@FrankAtwood Thanks!
Excel;lent Video! I have been telling my clients this for years , well not everything covered here. Mainly how to use home units.
Jeff Brown BBC Carpet Care Thanks Jeff I made it with the general consumer in mind.
I'm doing this tomorrow. Thanks for the great video! You're awesome. I have 2 questions:
1. In Las Vegas humidity is 0%, temp. is 90 degrees. Still no open windows?
2. Carpets seem to be "directed" one way (the threads lay typically toward one way). Does it matter which way I do the passes? Much thanks!
Not at all
Excellent advice I was thinking the same about applying the soap at the same time then quickly removing it 👍🏽
My only concern about spraying the solution is not knowing how much to spray. Do you have any advice?
Average Joe Survival You just need to mist it, don't soak it so it pools. Just spray it an let it sit for 10-16 min. Then Extract.
Frank Atwood Thanks! Appreciate the reply.
I have the same question i use a rug doctor x3 and i use there detergent what ratio or dilution do i use to get a good misting ?? And good vid
Thank you for this informative video. I tried to see if someone else asked this and didn't see that anyone had at least recently, so I am sorry if you've already answered this. Is it ok to make a pass with the diluted solution first, make a second pass with clean water, then a third pass as a dry run?
xXKairiXx -chan If you have no other way of dispensing the soapy solution yes. Just use 1/2 of the recommended soap in the tank.
Frank Atwood Thank you!
What carpet cleaning solution do you recommend?
You can buy general solutions at homedepot or heavier ph ones for greasy Chinese Restaurant carpeting there also. Less soap is more...1 8oz cup to 1 gallon of water.
Frank what is the ratio of soap to water to pretreat the carpet before using the machine?
I used 8oz to 1gallon of clean water or a 1:4 ratio.
Cat Walker
Vinegar will only mask the smell.
Why does he say NOT to open a window?
@William Keen What is a good rinsing agent to use?
Very useful and interesting advice. Glad I saw it now, as I'm considering buying or hiring a carpet cleaner soon.
Thank You John!
Thank you so much
His long does it take to use the carpet vacuum on a room about the size of the one you showed? Is the machine unwieldy?
If done right about and hour.
Hi how much water should i use with the soap in the spray bottle? 50/50?
No, 1/4 cup per gallon of clean hot water.
Thank you! A true unbiased tutorial!
I ran a carpet cleaning business for the last 7 years and guess who called me the most? Do it yourselfer's if that's even a word...
Thank you great valuable Advice , I should had known this before I should had saved my back many cleanings ago!;
TecunUman Tonatiu Yes sir, this is why U made the video. I wanted to save people time and money.
William Andersen when you spray the carpet you let it sit for 10 to 15 min. gravity does the rest...
How do you dilute the detergent into a spray bottle though
You take a gallon jug of water pour 8 ounces of water into an 8 ounce cup. Then dump that water out of the cup and refill the cup with detegerent , then pour that detegerent back into the gallon jug. Put the cap on shake it up. Then pour it all into a garden pump sprayer. Solution is ready to use....Then fill the machine with nothing but clean hot water and now your ready to extract. Wait 10 min after spraying solution to give the soap time to bond with the dirt. Rinse as needed. Use a window fan or box fan and Air Conditioning to aid in drying time.
@@FrankAtwood You sir are amazing, replying in such a short time. God bless and take care.

Carpet is spun plastic. You need three things to clean it properly heat, agitation, and a ph balanced soap. 300 is too hot. Hot tap water is fine.
No these store rentals do not heat up the water. Hot tap water is fine for extraction.
Great video. Thank you! What solution or formula would you recommend in the sprayer?
You can use their soap just use it in a separate sprayer, and hot clean water in the machine.
@@FrankAtwood ok thanks for such a quick reply. And pretreat stains with oxiclean or such? And leave overnight?
@@michelledatey You can but its more about ph balance. You need a soap that is ph balanced to what your trying to clean. plus hot water and agitation. Then you will have great success in removing the stain. If it is kool-aid or mustard forget it.. it cost hundreds of dollars and special chemicals to treat these types of stains. Red die requires a special red lifter solution. If its that bad just replace the carpet in that area.
Helpful tip you can use a mixture of vinegar with a tiny bit of soap and hydrogen peroxide with water, it works rather well
this video actually gives good advice!
YES!!! SO TRUE!!
Will a dehumidifier work in aiding drying time?
So thankful for this video
Thanks for your great work.
Love Ya Sydney!
Thank you 🙏🏾
Oh Wow this is amzing tip and makes so much sense!!!
Never use bleach as most carpeting is olefin or spun plastic. It will fade or discolor the carpeting. Garden pump sprayers are cheap....
Very helpful 👍
Thank You Debbie!
So vaccuum, spray diluted soap onto carpets, leave for 10-15 minutes, then go over it with clean hot water in the rug doctor, then do the dry pass with no water, let the fans dry the carpet, dont open the windows. Ta!
Love this video.
Amazing advises , clear and direct to the point. Love this video 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you
