I can't wait for you all to come alone in this build!
Thanks for watching
Holls
2002 Liberty I call 'Bert'; One of our Mack semis was stuck in the sand on my jobsite with an empty aluminum rock trailer- hooked ol' Bert up to it and dropped into 4low, eased into the accelerator and Bert dug in then popped the truck right out. Everybody on the jobsite was high fiving me and couldn't believe it. KJ simply means Keep Jeepin'
That’s so awesome!! 🤩
23:15 Do it! I'm going with the same approach with mine. Lovin' this build so far!!
If the stock tank has baffles in it use it. If it doesn't use the fuel cell. Because as you know when your out wheeling those funky angles will slosh that fuel around and starve the fuel pump. I think you have a great plan for your build. I'm a fan of fab rats and Colt and Ruddy's and I just became a fan of yours.
Good to see Walter again 😊
Thanks for keeping the build "normal", it's good to see from time to time.
In the U.K. jeep did a safety recall which required the fitting of a towbar or a bar without a receiver for crash protection of the fuel tank, I believe it was the same in the USA. The 3.7 l in the U.K. was rated to tow 3500 kg with a braked trailer ( over 7000lbs ) !!! The Jeep Liberty is known as the kj in Europe.
I agree with you on the fuel tank situation.Plus that free's up some money for something else if needed..
Keep the stock cell. Save the money for something else. A little fall back money never hurts. You've got this.💯👍
As long as the fuel tank is in good condition and clean Use it. Just reposition it higher up inside for clearance. It's good that the hidden damage was not any worse than it was and should be easy to fix. It's coming along.
Pulled a 12' fully loaded uhaul trailer, cross country with a 2002 Liberty Sport. I also pulled out a 2wd obs in 2' of snow, low gear in reverse. Our Heap de Azul, was a great little beast till I got tired of replacing dried out bushings at 250k miles.
For the fuel cell, just do the "tank tuck" with the stock tank. That's more of a realistic thing for someone with this budget (budjet) to do.
Honestly, the other builds are cool, but they are just novelty. You are going to end up with something that will actually be worth driving and wheeling.
Definitely watching to see how this turns out.
Also, I want to come wheel with you in my WJ (also unibody with 35s and D44s from a JK) someday.
Hollz! ❤ Missed you!!
Your THRIFTY Scottish side is shining thru...LOVE IT!! Smart girl you are!! 🎉🎉🎉 #TeamHollz woohoo
I have a liberty also, they are a tank. Dont need much to have fun with it. We dod a budget lift got armor underneath, got bumpers for it. Very capable rig.
That’s great to hear!
The rear hitch was a Jeep recall to protect the gas tank.
I really like how realistic you are keeping it can’t wait to see how she turns out
can't wait for this build. I have always thought it would be fun to build one of these. taking the front fenders gives it a cool doved look.
It’s cool that you are able to do a build this year. Glad you are doing better

Hollie swings a hammer right handed with a left handed grip.
Glad to see the start of this build, but what happened to the rest of the giveaway build? Would have loved to see the rest of that awesome build!
I would shift the old fuel cell up and add some extra rubber for protection
I own a 2002 Jeep Liberty that is solid axle swapped. I would recommend if you do keep the stock fuel tank get a skid plate. Or do a fuel cell because the fuel pump is not attached very well to the inside of the tank.
Good morning i like the progress you all were able to get done. I hope to one day see Off road and chill as part of the on X build challenge. I am a big fan of those two
I would stiffen the unibody with 3/16 plate. Looking great so far!
Yes, especially since they removed the front cross car structure from the K-Member which is what adds a lot of torsional rigidity to the uni-body construction. That front member does more than just support the engine and is a major structural member keeping the body from twisting and getting out of square. There is a reason why they are a modified K or X in design so one has to plan things out so you can maintain structure before cutting into it.
It will be interesting to see how they replace that structure to maintain integrity.
Best!
I would design and build an extension to support the axle, lift the fuel tank. This is not a road build but an off-road device/monster.Great detail video of a take down. Good show.
Love it!!! Very excited watching this build! Voting now!
It's looking good, I would re -use the old tank if it will still work because there might be other unexpected cost later on.
This is probably gonna get lost but you have the prettiest eyes!!!!!
So far this and the one Robbie is building are my two favorites. Keeping things as stock as possible while making it into a offroad vehicle is they way most of us would do it.
This little rig really has a ton of potential. Grab some D44 Rubi on axles, a Jeep steering box and some used or new 2.0 coilovers and you will have an awesome fun trail rig!
The fuel cell/gas tank idea is good.
I would also put the tow receiver hitch back and use it as a recovery/tow point.
This is going to be one solid KJ
I like the realistic build!!!
When the Jeep liberty first rolled out, I hated it and thought it ugly, but you have now made me change my mind. I can't wait to see it.
Yea I think your ok with the stock gas tank. I would say make a skid plate for the gas tank.
You have me beat! My daily driver KJ, Black, has it's original spare, too. The date code on it is 2006... and it's a 2006 KJ CRD. I also FB messaged you a photo of our other, bigger KJ build, Grumpy, towing... well, something far bigger than a lawn mower... ;-)
Why do I love this thing so much!?!? Love me some Liberty Biberty!
Glad you are going to make protection a priority for the fuel tank. The liberty was known to have issues with rear end collisions. I was lucky and had the factory trailer hitch installed, didnt have to add an aftermarket for protection. That is why it took me over 6 months to find a replacement 4 years after I traded off my first one. It had to have that factory trailer hitch package.
Yay! Been waiting for the Libby!
Love the teamwork and the energy on your channel so much.
THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO
Looking good!!!
Those tow bars were also put on there as a part of a recall. There was a gas tank problem. Very similar to the pinto. As part of the recall, they put the tow bars on there to protect the gas tank. I really wish my 2004 had been done. I have ZERO recovery points on mine!
Could have looked in the owners manual where to put the lift
Hey Holly,
In case you did not know, looking at your American flag from the shop it is backwards. The direction it is hanging the field of stars should be in the upper right corner. Not a huge deal, but it irks me when the US flag is displayed incorrectly. Love your channel and watching you wrench on things.
I think it's a huge deal...I reviewed U.S. Code Title 36, Chapter 10 closely before hanging the flag and it states - When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.
Apparently a lot of people get this incorrect assuming the union should be to the OBSERVERS right.
@@MischiefMakerTV Well, I must be misremembering what I learned 20 some odd years ago, or it has been changed in the years between then and now, whichever is the case I stand corrected.
This is exciting!
I do love this build I owned a 2003 with a level lift and 2 inch wheel spacers and decked out with lights and other stuff sold it after to many engine problems
I am concerned about that myself, but this one seems solid for 160K miles
No fuel cell. Keep the original tank and raise it up, with a skid plate under it too. Way cheaper and you don't lose the fuel capacity, as fuel cells are often too dang small for my liking. On the other hand, Tom Tom is real good at making a custom fuel tank?
Go Holly ❤
YES 🙌
Let's go holly !
Gonna have to add more to your budget. I didn't see mention of either the front, or rear bumpers. HAVE to have a safe place for the winch and also tow points if needed, Front and rear. I dare say, plating and boxing is also going to be needed for the abuse this lil machine is going to be put through. Also, sounds like you are going with hydro-assist, but still have to factor in your steering linkage. I hope you are planning an Exo-cage to help protect the body lines and windows in case of a flop.
Save the money use the stock fuel tank
I would just get a fuel cell. Personally i dont like how ugly it is when people raise the stock tank through the floor it looks much better with a fuel cell. I just cant stand the look with the stock tank. But if you were to cover it up or something then id think about using the stock tank.
It is about damn time!
Dont cut the top off, with a unibody, it require ALOT of strenting if you do it, and it not someting other then a master builder shoud do.
That’s what cages are for. The body of the rig is basically just a covering for the cage at that point. It’s not something I consider complicated, but I’m also not going to spend the time or money needed to do that. This is a budget build and it needs to be off the lift by the first week of September.
Stock Tank
Chrysler put the hitch on to protect the gas tank it was a recal
Makes sense. that tank will be moving for sure it suits far too low and too far forward. The new, larger, axle will need more room and will be stretched back further.
@MischiefMakerTV yes I had an 2003 in 2012 they sent out a recal and the hitch wa ms there solution to protect the gas tank in the event of a rear end collision
I vote keep stock tank raise it up and save the money and spend some on some awesome lights from the on x partner Rigid like rock lights A-series and some Adapt xp or something that would be awesome.
Don’t scratch my skid plates 👍😂
Jeep Cherokee doesn't have a frame either. So just do the best you can.
I believe the Cherokee xj is also supposed to tow 5000 pounds which i think is interesting i have used my xj to tow various different trailers mostly dirt bikes or garbage in a small trailer towing 5000 pounds is too much i think ive towed that much its sketchy even an empty 1500lb cargo trailer is not fun. The liberty is the replacement for the xj I've owned many xj's and a few zj's but never a liberty i think this is an interesting build and a neat vehicle to start with. Im not too familiar with the liberty I've worked on a few of them but i don't know much about them. I think it is a neat platform to start from it could look pretty cool im excited to see this build. The straight axle swap is a definite must, also do people weld on frame stiffeners like with the xj unibody? I dont even remember what these have for running gear does it have a good engine and transmission is the t case any good? Im really curious to hear from liberty owners i know these have a following too.
Good Video Very Good Progress
Hey if you get to Pennsylvania I could use help putting on a lift kit on my Liberty. I have MD so things are not that easy to do for me.
PS there's a pizza place right across the street
I was thinking use the stock tank and save 1300 😊
GET HER DONE, FIGURE IT OUT
That thing is like a car, and it has Arizona plates which means by law the seller has to disclose salvage status.🚗
They certainly did not disclose the damage, but who’s to say it wasn’t from another previous owner. I am planning on cutting out most of what they pulled out anyway.
It would have been nice to know, but No harm done in this case 😁
great as always great content very entertaining
I've got an 05 limited that is super clean, but the rocker panels are roached from salt damage. 😢 Dont know what I'm going to do about it yet. Everything works perfectly on it and there are tons of new parts on it. I want to restore it as much as possible, but have never done any kind of body work. I really want to remove the rockers completely and replace them with 2x6 steel as a kind of rock slider, but have no idea of where to begin. Any advice is much appreciated 🙂
Ummm...budjet? Are you putting a jet engine in it? Oh Holly, it is budget. 😂😂😂 ❤
Pratt&Whitney R2800 for the Win !!
I really thought more people would catch that 🤣🤣
@@MischiefMakerTV I am sorry for my spelling thingy. I have been told I am a walking dictionary in my family. Love your videos Holly. One day I want to meet you, your husband and of course Fergus! I have been a Jeeper since after high school.
keep the stock fuel cell
Get a bigger purse!!!😂😂
I haven’t seen much from you, and you weren’t on the live stream with all the other builders, but neither was bleep and Jeep. Not sure if you’re still still in this competition. But I am curious as to what you do with this platform as my adventure buddy who travels with me will eventually need her own rig and I’ve been looking at liberties because they are so low priced and yet they’re still fantastic option with a rock solid drivetrain.
We did a separate live stream than the other 4 teams since we were the original competitors/teams from last year. You can find it here:
ruclips.net/user/liveC6wjAn4fQC8?si=DBFAGJa84IMypcvE
I'm curious, everybody is building rides for Ultimate Adverture rides. Not for Overlanding. So wouldn't they be judging on overlanding accessories? Just curious on their definition for the builds. Because everyteam is building for extreme 4x4.
As far as I can tell, Robby is the only person building an actual overlanding rig. Personally, I would never build something I had zero intention of using and enjoying regularly. I’m not an overlander, so I’m building a fun budget rock crawler and I’ll do what I would usually do when we go on our group trip… pack some uncrustables/lunchables, a tent, and a sleeping bag. Sure, I’ll be drinking warm sodas after a day or two, but getting on/off the trail are always what matters most to me.
I don’t think there are any bonus points or penalties for keeping it simple. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of budget left to buy all kinds of overlanding gear, but I can’t justify owning a RTT or fancy cooking/camping gear because I’d have no use for them. I’m a rock crawler at heart ☺️
It’s the Scots way!
Basically making a WJ lol JK I know it'll be unique in MM kinda way.
What was the date code on the side of that spare tire???
In eu crd liberty can tow 3300kg. And it did quite good. I know americans can't tow without duallies, but on the other side we manage just fine without your oversized pickups.
Can I ship my 2003 Jeep KJ from Germany to you? Seems like you have nice parts for it 😊
Hollie, are you allowed to sell the used parts that you take off to offset the price of new parts??
Not this year. If that were the case, I think we could easily have gotten $1,500 for what we have removed so far.
be real, Holly...your coming in under budget is because your like me...Scotish 😁😁😁 we cheap !
🏴🏴 Deep pockets and short arms 😝
Your rebuild steering box and drive shaft are overpriced. If you bought them out of the junkyard and rebuilt them, it wouldn't be nearly as expensive as you figured.
PLEASE CLOSE some drawers on them tool boxes!!!! It only takes 1 to many drawers open to tip them boxes!! Take it from me i had a 7 foot snap on box tip on me cause i had 3 (heavy) drawers open and i might add it was one way to rearrange my tool box and it sucks!!! Take it from someone that LEARNED THE HARD WAY
That’s great advice! Thank you (and sorry that happened!)
@@MischiefMakerTV It was for sure a mess but like i said i got to clean it all out and reorganize it as all the tools were on the floor LOL and thank you
re using the stock fuel sell would save a bunch of $$$ that you could put to use ElseWare like an on-X system for liberty biberty . or a good sound system. better yet a tent off the back hatch. not that would be a wise investment
👍
I bet Kevin and Brittany will come get your used parts off the jeep liberty.
That is exactly where they will be heading!
@@MischiefMakerTV hopefully not my skid plates 🤷🏻♂️😟
Why do I want to go get my own liberty now?? Just raise the stock tank and SEND IT!
Well......how old was the spare??? Dont leave us hanging. You looked at the DOT what is it??? Im guessing factory.
That will be the start of the next episode 😊
How big of a lift and what size tires are you using
YES!111one ;-)
For over 3g for rubicon axles you would be cheaper to buy junk yard or marketplace 1 tons really.
That’s not true at all. You’re gonna spend $2500 on gears and lockers alone. Add housings ($250 each), master rebuild kits ($150 each) brakes and rotors for each corner ($180 per corner) and you’re way higher already and that’s assuming you are fine wheeling on used unit bearings and with stamped diff covers.
This is meant to be a simple and more realistic solution for beginner builders…but I absolutely agree that the smarter long-term DIY solution would be to build one tons and it if you fab up your own trusses and brackets, it will probably be the same cost as building take off 44s. It only gets expensive if you have to buy every new part.
Leave it Holly you may need the money on other stuff.
On x will not let you vote now unless you subscribe...
Yes, there was some ‘irregularity’ with the voting and this was the only way to keep things fair. They definitely did the right thing IMO, but it’s going to make it way more difficult for all of us to get votes.
I got mine for 500 and it wasn't even in a wreck... LOL
Zero rust & low miles?
@@MischiefMakerTV Zero rust. (PNW) 237k miles.
@selador11 I was trying to start under 150K miles
@@MischiefMakerTV I just needed a vehicle, and a friend had one. What a pleasant surprise it was, to find out how well it performs in the mud and snow. I live in the mountains, and it can get pretty bad in the winter. I love mine, no matter how many miles it has. 😁
Did you get lucky enough to buy a liberty with the three skid plates never mind the answer would be no, and are you going to put sliders on it. Oh Kevin at Litebrite bought 5 liberties to convert for a project of his.
I did hear someone speaking Spanish in the background?? Anybody
Yup Marlon from @offroadnchill
@@MischiefMakerTV oh ok I see it makes sense. Great video by the way. And it was nice meeting you in person at the off road games
Do you know Hollie that to vote ,you have to be a premium or Elite member??? This is not the way it was last year.
They had to change the rules to keep things fair! Unfortunately! Some of the trans have some very enthusiastic (and tech savvy) friends.

That name sounds like you copied a Liberty Mutual Insurance commercial.
🌮🎣🧁 🐿
Why are you building a liberty thats a fake jeep
What would you build?
@MischiefMakerTV personally I I would do a old school willy's with a twin turbo Cummings with a Alison transmission sitting on 45s with a 12inc lift
@@waynehollars5048 I think that would be great for a build without a budget. It would be hard to get the vehicle, motor, trans and the rest of the driveline for under $20K
@MischiefMakerTV true but it could be done if not that would have done a xj cheap and easy to find
@@waynehollars5048 I don’t see myself ever owning an XJ. I’m not a huge fan of em…a TJ would have been nice, but I like that the Liberty was cheap
