There is ONE band that is completely going around having no record label affiliation, producing their own music, music videos and merchandising. They are touring and even though they are going slowly, they keep what they make, other than paying their tour promotion company. LILIAC. NOT Lilac.... LILIAC. It means Bat in Romanian, which is where they hail from and currently residing in Georgia. For a family operation (the kids are all musicians), they are great. They recognize that the music industry will take all their funds so keep an eye on this group.

Luke anything I’m in... keltner, Jeff’s favorite and mentor, I’m in....sklar, and his beard I’m in....Dom I’m in. Thanks for this I’m in love and owe a lot to these men four their souls and work they played so passionate on. So much of their music especially Toto and jeff is why I keep trying this music thing, which is seemingly so far away as even these men that did it for real, but from these guys passion I move forward in any way I can. Again thank you for this.

Hey Dom! Thanks so much for these videos. I'm a professional camera man for CBS and I can assure everyone: The topics discussed here are affecting EVERYONE, and not just musicians. When we have people in power who DO NOT CARE about the ones who truly make the art/money ( i.e. working in the trenches ), chaos WILL result. So, instead of being a liberal/conservative, be PRACTICAL: Save money, produce good work, be on the lookout for the details in ANYTHING ( including contracts ), work with/learn from people who thrive in their jobs, stay healthy, pay your dues ( yes, whether you agree with it or not, most unions really do save jobs!! ), pick the best politicians who really put their work/lives on the line and mentor to people who WILL need help. ALL of these things really develop over the time in order to help everyone. Love this video. Heed the words on this video, folks.

Real cool. I remember in the beat era 1965 as an 11 year old being part of a youth group. We would organise local youth dances with Beat Bands from close by or a bit further away. They would do sets on a Saturday from 5 pm until 10pm. These were dances. The electric guitar was relatively new. The Beatles and Stones had come out the year before and a host of other bands were coming out regularly. I remember hanging up maybe ten posters in a small town of 5000 people and around 200 young people would show up at the door for the event. Admission was 2DM . The Band would get between 200 to 400 German Marks, which was back in 1965. I remember that it was working very well but also it was the cool thing to do at that time. I remember playing myself with a band at the age of 16, in 1970 doing similar dances and also opening up for some known artists or bands in 1971 in bigger events. I don't know if we were any good, but I remember we had loads of fun. So, there must be some places were young musicians can present themselfes before a life audience.

What Lee Sklar says at 35:00 is true. There are so many technically outstanding musicians out there who have no depth, no soul. People are so obsessed with the surface these days that it makes them blind for beauty.
Dom, you are an inspiration and a music hero to musicians all over the world (I'm in London). I went to my first NAMM show in Chicago in 1968 - my dad was the publicist. Years later I used to go to NAMM in LA. The music trade shows in London are small scale compared to America, but occasionally there's a good clinic. I follow Lee (every day) on RUclips, but the addition of Luke and Keltner had insane chemistry, and when I've seen Paul with you, he always delivers quality info. But it's your enthusiasm and presence that gets the conversation cooking. I know this happened a year ago, but it just popped up on my RUclips feed, and I'm glad I got to see it in its entirety. Keep'em coming!

Also, Steve's comment on Accountants & Lawyers reminded me of James Brown's comment about Disco. "Disco ain't music! Disco is Lawyers & Accountants making money!" Heed the words of The Godfather of Soul.

About the business side of it, the problem seems to be that most of money coming from copyrights isn't there anymore because all the international conventions that are regulating those rights apply only to TV, radio, film etc and not to the internet. And most internet companys made sur that those convention did not apply. Also this whole discussion is really really great!
I agree with the guy talking about not just focusing on chops, or how fast you can play. You have to first play from your heart and soul, and make the music that contribute something meaningful to the song. But don't take that advice in the opposite direction either. What I mean, is that you have to learn how to play well, and you should learn at least some basic theory as well. That way, when you hear something in your head, you'll have the technical knowledge to know how create what you are hearing, or feeling.
Another reason why theory is helpful, is so you can know why a certain passage in a song, or a particular chord change, or how one part of a song changes into another part..., why that moves you. With an understanding of theory, you'll come to know how to make those sort of changes create a musical statement that really has feeling.
There's certain Elton John songs that give me goose bumps, like Funeral For A Friend, or Someone Saved My Life Tonight, or Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. Those songs have chord changes that are effin aMAZing! But with my limited understanding of theory, I only understand how the chords in the last song create that feeling: It's because they're written around a harmonic minor key. I wish I had a deeper understanding of theory, so I could come up with those sorts of things with actual intent, as opposed to just getting lucky once in a while. With knowledge of music theory, your songwriting can be deeper, as well as easier, in my opinion.
Knowing theory, and having good playing technique, are simply tools to help you write better songs. And I'd bet all the guys on that panel would agree. Just don't fall into a hole, where that stuff becomes your primary focus. Sure, go ahead and learn the cool licks and riffs of your favorite players, but use them and incorporate them into your own voice.
One more good piece of advice I heard somewhere was, learn licks from players of different instruments than yours, and try to blend them into your playing. For example, transferring a saxophone lick to guitar will help broaden your musical palette, so to speak, and help you to sound fresh and unique.

I’m getting too old. I can’t buy an mp3 or file. When I purchase, it has to be at least a cd...at a minimum. Even my tape still sound great. They divest an artist.

The live music night club scene is gone due to dui arrest.
Artists have to get together and form their own collectives, own performing establishments and fair distribution systems OUTSIDE of the labels . Its the only way to save the music industry.
Music is not the only part of our society getting pulled apart thus way. Way back in the 1700's it was a crime for a corporation to own another Corp. When things get too big everyone down stream suffers. Be it a King or a Multinational. Peace

I had it figured out... I had a whole career playing bass here in LA and the Ca Government DESTROYED MY JOB in 2020.
Bars just love to call the local karaoke guy for a hundred bucks to come play tunes. Bands are having a hard time getting gigs. A few bands broke apart and now the lead singer plays a solo set to compete mr. karaoke since the lounge won't pay for a full band.
at 48:50, this guy says, that there's lots of concerts...but "no one's showing up". Uh, pal...have you BEEN to a concert lately? All are ALWAYS sold out, our nearly so. I mean stadium shows. Steve says that it could also be an issue of economics. Wrong. Again, not only concerts are just about sold out...but take a look at any televised sport. Baseball, Hockey, Football, Basketball...full stadiums. The issue very well AMY be: Good groups. More and more are retiring, current music is fairly gutless and doesn't leave you with that feeling after hearing it on the radio, "wow...I wonder what THAT would be like, live". THAT ...is most likely, the issue.

The record industry did this to themselves. By continuing to screw the artists...they pushed them to find another way. Artists had to pay out of their own pocket. so many things. And now...they can make their own music, distribute it and what not...without a label. And...no big studios. No engineers...and really, no producers...who were some of the biggest thieves. The industry's greed, and the screwing from Unions...created this mess. And....Jim Keltner lives in a complete dream world...no grasp of reality what so ever. Lukather really tells it like it is....as usual.

Unions can be good or bad. Frank had a great business mind AND a great mind as an Artist. Few people have both. Screwing each other for pennies is the problem. Everyone tries to get ahead by keeping others down.

This is what happens when a bunch of irrelevant people are bought in to discuss a current issue. None of these men will never have to worry about money. Where is Joe Bonamassa and Steve Vai? These two run their own operations 100%. They are much more qualified to discuss the industry today.
Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I looked up Lukather's net worth while watching this video (because some of what he was saying seemed a bit hypocritical), and it was listed at $90M. So I thought, why don't THESE guys, and others like them, wrestle the control away from the monopoly music corps? (Yes, I'm aware of guys you mentioned doing this sort of thing, but seems like that effort needs more artists behind it.)
