When i still had a FB account, one day i sent Leland a quick message to tell him how much i loved his tone, mentionning btw that i wish i could talk to him and ask a few questions.
10 seconds later, i received a reply from him that only said ''Ask''.
We chatted for a solid 30 minutes, with me telling him every 5 minutes that i didn't want to hold him up from more important things, and him replying that i had great questions and he enjoyed chatting with me and wanted to continue.
It was a pure joy for me to be able to pick his brain about many bass-related things, and he was the sweetest guy.
What an awesome guy!
One of the most generous people I've ever met. When I was very ill, he was one of a handful of people who checked on my well being, and it's not like he's sitting around with nothing to do.
The world needs more Leland Sklar types.
@@jamesparr6840 yep, real down to earth great guy!
@@RockandRollWomanagree!!
a gentleman AND a scholar...
What Rick brings to us is simply THE FINEST of RUclips.
100%
imagine a Jimmy Page interview?
Rick couldn’t get a word in edge ways.
He usually doesnt get in the way and wants the orher person to do the majority of talking - which makes him such a joy to listen to :) what a great but of music history @Hickalum
Leland is in an incredible physical and mental shape for a 76 years young man. Sharp as a knife.
Jeeeez, he's in his 70's?!?!
@@Livelaughlimpbizkit Well, Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" has been released 51 years ago. Mister Sklar knows how to stay _safe from harm..._
Rick is building a library of music history videos that will be cherished and studied by musicians for generations
This guy is 76 and still rocking??! Bless this man and thank you Rick for this enlightening interview!
Guy is 76 and look at his legs and arms. Gives me hope that I can be that strong, healthy and still working at that age.
Indeed.. its all in the jeans..genes..Lee rocks..
@@Acemechanicalservices Daily walks do wonder for one's health--even a 1/2 hr per day, e..g., mental relaxation, mitigates blood glucose levels, heart health benefits. Keeps you fit!
@@Acemechanicalservices I wish his long-time collaborator/boss Phil Collins was in such good physical condition. It's honestly been tough coming to grips that he'll apparently never be able to play drums again.
Lee Sklar is a National Treasure. Just amazing... Thank you Rick for this interview - and thank you Lee for being you.
an International Treasure ;-)
As a classically trained bass player, I have learned to appreciate Leland for 2 reasons: 1. Leland exhibits perfect - and I mean perfect - technique that all bassists should emulate and 2. Zero Ego. Saw him in San Antonio years ago, yelled out his name and he waved back. Priceless.
Will have to take a listen to this fellow. He seems sincere and no doubt is good. As a "classically trained" composer I have little or no awareness of what commercial music involves. What a great channel and a real education
I went to Birmingham high school with Lee in Van Nuys CA along with Sally Fields. Lee was not only a wonderful musician at that time but a great graphic artist. I'll never forget the Big Daddy Roth Rat he created on his bass case. So happy for him that he has been so successful!
Lee’s daily RUclips segments and his Clubhouse visits helped so many of us get through the pandemic. He never missed a day. That’s real commitment! As incredible a musician as he is, he’s an even better human being.
...and if that's not enough, he's a dog lover!
Well said!!
The Clubhouse has been the source of some gold friendships, and during those early isolated months, it was the only music thing I had that still had a community. I feel very fortunate to have found Leland's channel soon after he started it.
indeed!

👍
Leland is the Gandalf of bassists. Unbelievable. And for 76, the guy is in fantastic shape.
and Rick Wakeman is the wizard of keyboardists!
Funny how we always put an age on what shape someone should be in at that age. Isn't he in great shape for any age? Meaning there are 37 year olds that don't have his guns! In fact most don't. And mentally he's so sharp too!
You Shall Not Pic
Staying in shape is is one of the key components to staying and thriving in the music business along with colossal talent. Also he seems to love every aspect of playing music. I love this.
Gandalf the Bass!
Not only is Leland the Swiss Knife of Bass playing but he also is a formidable story teller. Incredible life he is living. Thanx for having you both.
I went to see Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music a few years ago. The openers took the stage and on bass... holy crap, that's Leland Sklar!!. Met him at the merch table after their set and he was SO nice. He treated each person he met like the only person in the room and time itself seemed to slow down while he gave his undivided attention to whomever was fawning over him at the moment. Just a perfect example of humanity and professionalism.
This was absolutely the fastest hour interview I've ever heard! Such a fascinating guy. Please get Leland back for a part two soon!
There is another interview with Lee by Rick made during the pandemic …..about 20 minutes if I recall. Just thought I’d let you know if you want to look for it and check it out.
Contention for best video on youtube and I'm only 0.01 seconds into it.
I’m in. 👍🏼
I think someone around might be a bass player
I am, full transparency. Lol.
Ditto.
Lee is the consummate professional, and always has been. His credentials are mind-blowing, and he was the go-to bassist for decades and still a big hero to me. Sort of like Jim Keltner on the drums. No bravado, such a class act and probably too humble to acknowledge how important he is in the tapestry of music. Hats off to Rick, he definitely hooked a big fish!
I discovered Lee’s RUclips channel early on in COVID and I was hooked. He is such a genuine guy, reponds to comments you post all the time. I kinda imagined him as some aloof strange guy when I’d see him on stage with James Taylor or Phil Collins but completely opposite and a musical treasure and hats off to Rick for letting me just talk, and not controlling the interview. I could listen to him talk all day.
The man is not just an American treasure he’s a treasure to this world. I’ve been a member of his RUclips channel from 1 month after he started it… what a bass player but more importantly ‘WHAT A HUMAN BEING..’
It's been a while since I saw a video on his channel. He looks really healthy in this interview. I was really worried about him getting through the pandemic in one piece.
He is truly a treasure to this world at a time when we really need one.
I had the good fortune to meet Leland at a book signing. My wife “pimped” me out and told him I’m in a band. Here’s a man who’s played with literally the world’s most talented artists, and he was making an effort to make me feel like I was doing something special. First-class musician, and more importantly, human!! ❤️🎸🎶
Nice story but just wanted to point out that you need not use the word, "literally". It is NOT to be used for emphasis. Emphasis is not one of its definitions/meanings.
@@thomasluby1754. You sound like fun 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
@@amfwelsh Thank you. 😄😄😄😄😄They call me, "The life of the party".
@@CraigDR .....that response was too good .....
@@CraigDR 🤣😆🤣😆🤣 Where do I start? (1) You misused the word, "literally". It is not to be used for emphasis (I thought I made that clear), as you incorrectly wrote, "...is literally acceptable." That should read, "...is acceptable". (2) Your sentence of, "...is not generally used for emphasis..." should read, "....is not used for emphasis...". My use of a comma was correct English. (3) Never try to correct someone with a higher IQ, more formal education and much higher net worth. This lesson is over. 😆🤣😆🤣😆
Leland is truly inspiring as a musician. So many decades of experience to discuss, and just a musician who enjoys what he does. Love him so much
First, he’s an inspiring human being. If there’s such a thing as a “feel good” interview, this is it.
Dude's beard is barely bigger than his arms.
Although it's bigger than Rick. 😁
He also comes across as genuine and with zero pretension. Great musician and seemingly a better human being.
Wat band was he in??
@@rona4851 , I don't believe that he was ever a full-time member of any famous band, but he has toured with and recorded with many big acts over the last 40 years or so. You've heard him on a bunch of hit records. Look him up.
This must be the nicest dude alive, what a pleasure to listen to Mr.Sklar.
Lee “you take everyday for what it is. Its a constant adventure every day and that’s the thing that keeps it exciting. You just dont know what tomorrow holds so you want to be there for tomorrow. “
Lee of all days, this is the day I needed to hear this thank you for just saving my life. Love what you do and I value your advice that you share. Thank you
The stories from these older guys of when session work was HUGE are gold. This is an era that will never happen again. It is a shame most of that is gone now. Listening to these stories is magic.
The story which ended up with him adding a fake switch to his instrument was hilarious. Loved it.
Could we get three more hours of this please?
"We're just gonna cuddle" 😂
Leland is a super-talented legend. I love hearing his stories. Nearly every time I listen to him tell a story I learn about another song that he played on. His musical resume is incredibly immense and impressive. He's a consummate professional but incredibly down-to-earth and kind as well.
Rick is a great interviewer. He allows Sklar so much room to express himself but is soo good at stepping in without being disrespectful or intrusive. He knows if he allows Sklar to talk he would never stop.
I noticed that about Leland. He will help the interviewer, especially the younger ones, by anticipating their questions. Lee`s an ol pro, what can you say.
yes thats a talent or discipline to respect, to appreciate
This interview could have been 8 hours long and I would still want more !
All of Rick's interviews are like that! Best YT music interviewer ever.
Not only is Lee a supreme bass man he is a the perfect gentleman. Another great interview from Rick.
as always - Rick is the best interviewer, ever. Ask an appropriate, informed question and get the hell out of the way. Thank you Rick for this gem.
Leland Sklar is a legend among musicians. An amazing bass player. He's worked with so many great artists. Cheers! ✌️
Cheers! ✌️
Session musicians are the unsung heroes of the music biz.
Can there be anyone more enchanting or better experienced than Leland Sklar? He's the best!
Given his VAST career, Lee's absolute COMMAND of names, dates, studios, etc is nothing short of AMAZING!! And at 76?!? Even MORE AMAZING!! (I have a hard time remembering what I had for breakfast!!) A National Treasure for Certain!!
…Yes not stuttering at a name, Amazing
Been following Lee since I saw him playing with James Taylor when I was about 12 years old. I saw the beard, the cool stage presence and heard the solid playing and said I gotta know more about his guy. Pre-internet I just started buying records with his name on them - the journey began !!
You have a good eye for world class talent.
you must have quite a big collection meanwhile.🤣🤣🤣
My God this is history! And I would rather watch these amazing interviews than ANYTHING else. Rick, please know that what you’re doing is completely invaluable to us. What a super cool human being, astounding musician, and the most incredible interview!! ❤
I guess we are all having the pleasure of just watching and listening 2 friends , just chat it all out , letting the stories flow , with Rick nicely prompting the questions and flow ; just talking business as they know it ; its just when you hear the names they are casually talking about , are the people we are in awe of ; the named behind epic albums , music that has soundtracked decade after decade ; and behind all this , helping this all along , is this man right here ; and the Big names Called HIM ; they needed HiM to make the magic happen .
Legendary , and so nice to watch these Buddies chatting it all out .
Lee Sklar said it..Brand X & Phil Collins..Underrated for years and deserve recognition..Would love seeing an in depth look at their music and interviews
At the end of "Don't make waves" from Brand X you can really what's Collins ' drumming was about... The guy is a genius
Under rated? By whom?
Maybe not under rated but not well known by many.I was a big fan of theirs and as a young bassist at the time,Percy Jones was wonderful to be amazed by.
Just imagine if everyone behaved like a member of a band - we'd all be listening intently to each other and be wondering how we could best contribute to the benefit of the whole group. These great musicians are always so wonderfully humble - much respect.
Love the way this legend plays the bass. Also a class act of a man.
You know why Lee is the best? Because he is genuine. Absolute diamond of a musician. Fantastic interview.
I remember seeing Lee in various video clips in the 80s and thinking "whos this old bloke"? 35 years later Lee looks the same and Im the old bloke. Age has taught me time is wasted on those who dont utilize it. What a legend.
Integrity, progress, and love of passion transcend a person's life.
I don’t know how many times I’ve looked up who played that awesome bassline I had just heard, only to see Leland Sklar’s name. Legend!
Truly a musician’s musician. A rare combo of sophistication and cool. I could listen to Lee’s stories for hours.
Same
I admire and wish to own that kind of speaking skills.
You two, the older you appear, the younger your convictions and your own minds enchanting the minds of young people with your experiences and teachings.
Talking is good.
I am so utterly impressed that Leland Sclar can remember all these moments and names with such crystal clarity, at his age. I sure hope my mind remains that sharp when I'm 76. :)
expat Aussie here. Glad to hear leland mention Billy Thorpe. Thorpe was a legendary muso from and in Australia. Such a pity he is gone now.
I met Leland on Cape Cod when he was touring with Lyle Lovett’s Very Large Band. Beautiful easy conversation. When my wife & I went in and met Lyle, the first words out of my mouth were: “Dude, I just met Leland Sklar! That guy’s a legend!” Lyle said “Yeah, he’s pretty good.” (Kinda forgot who’s show I was at.) Lyle was a true southern gentleman, very classy guy. There are some very cool people in this business. 🤔🍷🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩
Such a great professional. As Leland talks about the importance of 'the song' and how all the decisions revolved around the music, I can understand why he enjoyed playing so long with Phil Collins. Two peas in a pod. Two laid-back perfectionists on a gig. They both understood the importance of 'what does the song need'? Both did their homework to make it look so easy!
Rick and Leland: two brilliant minds and incredible talents. Rick is so brilliant he shuts up and lets Lee talk. What a wealth of information! "It's a constant adventure"
Rick, I was so excited to meet you and see Lee Sklar again after Lyle Lovett's show, that I forgot to thank you for turning me on to Lee with your first interview with him during the pandemic. Thank you! Lee Sklar is truly a global ambassador of music and humanity. He is such a nice, friendly guy and I appreciate his history with music in Japan being that I'm of Japanese descent. And Lee is such a humble guy. If you add pictures of all the people in the world who like him into his book, "Everybody Loves Me", it would be the biggest book in the world! Thank you again, and I look forward to seeing more nice musicians you will introduce to us in September as well as yourself.
It was great meeting you too!
I’ve met Leland a few times. He’s always been really awesome to be around. He has such an amazing energy & makes you light up.
It's impossible to dislike Leland. I hope he lives forever and plays just as long. 😎
Incredible, 76 already and still so vivid, still having so much fun in making music. Chapeau.
This wasn't an interview, this was two friends who respect and honor each other who are having a fun and interesting conversation. I have watched many of Rick's and many of Lee's interview and podcasts. This was one was different for both of them. Both acted more authentic and enjoyed each than I have seen in a long time. GREAT video with two greats. Kudos
So happy to see Leland Sklar with you here! He has literally played on the soundtrack of my life. Thank you so much for every not🙏💗
What a joyful interview. Leland's approach to music is so interesting and beautiful at the same time.
A great example of what 'graceful aging' means. What a legend!
Leland is such a great guy. How blessed we ALL are to live in this day and time, to be able to listen to his wonderful contribution to music, and to be able to enjoy his kindness and goodness! Thank you, sir, for everything!
My favorite bass players, Leland Sklar and Abe Laboriel. Between them they have recorded their bass in thousands of hits!
Two of the very best for sure.
I wonder if Lee has ever worked Abe Laboriel Jr!
@@jjbsnak95096 I think so. I've heard in another interview that Leland is very good friends with Abe and his son Abe Jr. which by the way is Paul McCartney's drummer!!
That's cool! I knew Abe Jr. is Paul McCartney's drummer but not the connection with Lee. Makes perfect sense, tho :)

I could listen to Lee's stories for hours and hours, so interesting and entertaining. And he is talking english in a way, that even I as German is able to understand 😀. Thx Rick for this great interview !
I got to play on stage with him at a festival once and it was a serious highlight for me. I’m sure it was no big deal for him but man. I think he’s great.
Never clicked so fast lmao. Lee is amazing and such a cool guy.
You must have 'cause you beat me!
But for Rick, I would not have found Lee - what a glorious turn of good luck for me. ;^) What a fun conversation!
I could listen to Leland all day. Great stories. I love his RUclips channel.
These two.... could it get any better??? WOW. Lukather once said in an interview, that Lee may actually be on more albums than he was! Lee is a national treasure, and what a great guy!
Fantastic! I found Leland's YT channel just before your 2020 interview. Since then, I've come to adore this talented and hardworking dude with a giant heart. I've been through all the venues he's played through his videos, and gotten to know The Immediate Family.
With the documentary coming out soon, many more people will get to meet Lee, his basset hounds, and many of the musicians he's played with.
Great to see Mr Beato interviewing yet another of our national treasures.
Hey there! 👋😁. So many of us have come to adore the man. As you so rightly said : a giant heart and one helluva human being.
This was fantastic!!!
Leland was the bass player on Gene Clark’s “No Other” album (among many brilliant albums that he has played on), one of the greatest albums in recorded history.
Respect.
74 , love Gene Clark!
👍
In your opinion lol.

Of course! Who else’s?
Lee Sklar... 76 years of age. The epitome of love, humility, talent and wisdom. And still as sharp as a tack. Totally inspirational.
Rick….. Thank You..!! Truly an enjoyable show… I’m a drummer that played out in the late 70’s in LA….. never actually broke thru the gate .. so I returned to NYC .. got married and ended up being a cop ( NYPD/28 years on the job )…
Still play almost everyday..
I love your show… you cover all the bases when it comes to music and music theory…
This interview with Lee was just so great…!!!! I have always been a big fan..
Thank You So Much…!!!!
Lee is a brilliant musician! Definitely in my top5 best bass players.
Thank you both for a dialogue that was worth being recorded.
Holy smokes, never thought I'd see Lee on here! The hour went by like nothing, I could listen to his stories all day.
40:26 .. "...first final farewell tour..." 🤣🤣🤣
The Charlie Watts and Andy Griffith stories! Priceless!!!
The legend Leland Sklar! I think one of the reasons he has been so succesful is because (in addition to his great talent) he's so friendly and such a good communicator.
I met him once, and I just wanted to shake his hand, and tell him that I respected him. It became a 10-20 minute conversation on the industry and philosophy that only ended because his ride showed up. He is the essence of what it looks like to give back to the community. 🤟🤟
Great interview, Rick. Smart move - just let him talk.
It was great to listen to two true gentlemen talk about the true history of the greatest years of recorded music.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this video. I'm 39 years old. Since i began playing music 30 years ago, I've never seen someone share so much passion and inspiration for artists or their music. You love music. That's obvious. Had no clue who Leland was until this evening. You have both changed my life for the better. With the current state of the music industry and the world as well, seeing this has inspired me to continue recording and also inspired a change in my playing. I began playing piano and now play over 20 instruments. When i play, i will always think of this conversation. Such greatness and so humble. Thank you, Rick. God bless you, brother!
When I was a child, I used to watch a VHS tape of Phil Collins "But Seriously Live In Berlin" that I had at home over and over, and I felt in love with all the musicians in the band, specially Leland. On those times internet didn't even exist yet and these people seemed so far from our lives. It's incredible that nowadays we have them telling us beautiful stories about their experiences, as well as shearing their knowledge, all of it within a distance of a "click" from our phones or computers. Watching the VHS I mentioned above I had to imagine how would them be in real life, and Leland really goes far from any idea or expectation... what a warm, nice and charm guy! Just love him. Thank you Rick!
One of the coolest and smoothest interviews I have ever heard. Rick didn't need to hardly say anything...
Lee is such a great storyteller.
Remarkable Leland Sklar. The Best. From Paris, thank you so much.
He defines the PRO in professional musician!
I absolutely love Leland! He is my bass hero. Played on everything with everyone. Absolute legend.
Only one word for Leland Sklar - Legend
That's how Lyle Lovett introduces Lee and Russ. Every musician in the Large Band highly accomplished and some with long, impressive histories. But, there's only two Legends.
As you mentioned BrandX - John Goodsall -guitars, Percy Jones - bass, Robin Lumley -keyboards, and Phil Collins drums. Saw them in London 1979 at the Town & Country.
Were amazing and since then i see Phil as one of the greatest drummers on the face of this earth.
What an incredible and creative work ethic Lee has. He's been doing this forever, yet he still approaches it with such enthusiasm. My hat's off to him.
I could sit here and listen to Lee tell stories for hours. Such a gem.
Lee amazes me at his age! He’s 10 years older than me (his music has been part of my life for 55 years), but then, my two best friends are 75 and 73 - still ride motorcycles, shoot pool and golf. And I still play a Saturday matinee every week!
Love Lee!
Cheers Rick!
Peace
Transposing on the spot for a gig - nothing like it. I'm a keyboard and vocals guy (when I'm not on FOH). If I'm with a group who is guitar led and I notice the capo is on a different fret, I shift and go with it. Sometimes the band starts to play something I don't know and I start playing along. They ask, "Do you know this song?" I say, "No. I'm just paying attention." I was in a gig where we were playing with a speaker. I was sitting in the back at a round table with the rest of band behind me and heard some papers shuffling. They were writing out a song by hand, making copies, and passing them around to everyone in the band. Something the speaker said gave a couple of them an idea and we went to the stage and played this song we didn't know, had never heard, it was perfect for the program, and we nailed it. You never know what you're going to get into.
I saw him live with Phill Collins at the Garden in 86 and he was fantastic and looks exactly the same!!!
Great interview! The reason that Andy Griffin called Leland is because 10 minutes after meeting, or in my case, watching and listening to him, you think he's your best friend! What a personable guy and a great story teller! I enjoyed every minute.
He just made my day point to the drummer!
"Everything we do is etched in mud". Beautiful quote! Awesome guy Leland, full of talent and stories.
I do like Leland, such a happy person. He makes you feel good.
Great to have you both together and chatting. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.
Oh man this is great.. Lee is so fabulous and what a nice guy.. LOVE his support and remembrance of Jeff Porcaro
Leland Sklar the philosopher. ''You just don't know what tomorrow holds...so you wanna be there for tomorrow'' wow ! this is strong. Very strong. This is immensely helpful. Thank you Sir. Thank you Rick
"Everything I do is etched in mud." What a great line.
What a remarkable thing it is to be able to listen to two incredibly talented and versatile people.
Best interview ever…🎼😊🎼🎼🎼 both of these gentlemen are gems…!
wow,76, live on bro, thats super,am 70 and kept learning and listening, to music and fascinated at what i missed ,in my youth
Omg what an amazing bassist, but what makes him even better is how human he is. So many songs he has played on that makes me think of Leland as on the level as the Funk Brothers.
This guy is a legend.
And he doesn't have an OFF button.
