About 10 years ago at NAMM I went across the street to a little pizza place, ordered up a slice and sat down. Leland comes in right after me, asks if the seat next to mine is open. Uh, yeah, it's open! Spent about 45 minutes having the best time talking (and mostly listening to his great stories). I'll never forget it. He's exactly like he comes across here. A real gentleman and as we know, an extraordinary talent. Legend indeed!

Something so important that Leland points out here, is just to UNDERSTAND the difference in expertise.
Mostly how well people are talented at those differences!
A lot of times people make you feel like you have to perfect at all of it.
Which doesn't even make sense from the amount of it.
Coming up with something new and refreshing just takes completely different skills than having to change the way you're playing 5 minutes before going live.

Leland is the professional’s professional. After first watching “The Wrecking Crew” documentary , I have learned to really appreciate studio musicians. I actuality, a great studio musician is first a musician, second an arranger, and third a writer/composer. I’ve always thought of them as engineers. Someone gives them an idea and they make it work. Have similar experiences with 'church music'! We instrumentalists show up with no idea what the music is going to be for that service; or if it's going to be played in the written key. The music itself (the contemporary stuff) is usually written by amateurs for organ and crudely adapted for guitar; so we usually have to do some editing to make it work. All-in-all; it's great training for band work!
