- Steve Lukather is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Toto. He has also released several solo albums and has played on numerous other artist's records. Lukather has been with Toto since the band's formation in 1977 and has also played on many notable albums such as Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and "Bad" and Boz Scaggs "Silk Degrees”. He has been recognized as one of the most respected session guitarists in the industry and has won multiple Grammy awards throughout his career.

I met SL in 2017 the day before my mother died. Paid to meet Toto backstage and slipped him a note asking him to dedicate a song to my soon to be late mother. I didn't think he would but guess what? He dedicated I'll Be Over You to Donna in such a sweet and honest way that I was in tears for the whole song! To this day I STILL can't even watch 10 seconds of the video but one day I'll be able to watch the whole thing! I LOVE you Mr. Lukather!!!
That was so nice ....I tear up right now by reading this because I feel your loss man... because my Mom died that same year in April...Rest in peace to our mothers. And I love that song too!!

The audio book of Steve's autobiography is amazing. He's narrating it. Couldn't stop listening to it. Super funny and transparent. I highly recommend it.

Has played on over 1500 albums...before and during his 45 years as the sole constant in TOTO. A workhorse who is still on fire for his craft. A true force of nature.

@@timphelan2873 I disagree as well. He is full of himself, in contrast to interviews like 10 years ago where he was much more level headed.
I met Luke about 10 years ago, at a VIP meet and greet for a small solo show he had, back when such things were still possible. And he was the nicest, most humble, most grounded rock star I've ever met. I came away honestly thinking "what an incredibly nice guy". Then I saw him live after the meet and greet, and I came away thinking "what an absolute and utter master of his instrument." I was blown away, twice, for different reasons. There are a lot of rock stars who could do the second part, but SO few rock stars that can do both.
Steve Via is the same way. I met him early 2000's. He was genuinely concerned if my wife enjoyed the show and talked to her more than anyone else.
Me too, but after the gig through a friend. Completely blew me away playing, then just the most humble and nice guy you could hope to ever meet in your life. Touched me in a really positive, special way that is impossible to describe. Steve, if you see this, thank you from the bottom of my heart. 🙏

Perfectly stated. I can say personally that Satriani is cut from the exact same mold, as is Timmons. So many of the all time greats literally don't have an ounce of pretension in their bodies. No posing, no over-infalted egos. Just pure love for their art. And what an incredible document of musical history these videos from Rick Beato are to every one of us music lovers. Truly a gift as well.
Lukather is a fantastic storyteller and Rick is the most gracious interviewer. Really enjoyed how devoid of pretension this interview was. It feels like meeting old friends for drinks and talking until dawn. Luke is a legend and it's good to see he's comfortable in his skin - natural hair looks great!

@@cherrysunburst1959 A bit off center, yeah, they are not on the same page right off the bat. Rick is the only guy (I believe) that these "living legends" recognize as a real peer of theirs, a monster musician. Every interview he does ends up being a real treat. That shows just how much respect professionals in the music industry have for Rick.
What a legend! A friend of mine and I met Steve Lukather just weeks ago in Champaign, IL, by chance when we walked out of a restaurant. Also if it was freezing cold, he took his time for taking a picture and having a quick talk. Just awesom!
He was impressed that we flew all the way from Germany for the Toto and Journey concert.
He is an absolute legend and meeting him was really one of my most special moments of my whole life

Great for you! Love it. Around ten years ago Chris Rea did a massive work of blues and art and then tour. To my surprise the band didn´t come to Sweden so me and my wife had to sacrifice and fly to Amsterdam. There is only two ways to travel safe; Music and Hockey.
Rick has become to music what James Lipton was with Inside The Actors Studio, letting the outsiders into the artists' worlds in a way that was NEVER available to us.
These interviews are a Godsend.

@@castormontesquintillan6752 Give him time, I'm sure that he will. Bear in mind that he only recently did a feature on Jeff Beck. As another commenter notes, there are so many great musicians from Rick's generation, and his taste is so expansive, that it's difficult to get to them all as fast as we'd like him too. Think of it as something to look forward too...
What a wonderful person! He’s like a genius and a rambunctious puppy at the same time. The smile on his face when he plays, how can you love something after doing it all your life? I know nothing about playing an instrument, but I’ve noticed something in common with another musician I follow, Tom Bukovac. They are real, natural, people lovers, and they’re grateful to their mentors, and love to communicate, love to talk music.
And they are true to themselves; they’re comfortable with their skills. Not boasting, just comfortable with their natural, hard earned skills. And they seem to play in service to the song

Well said. So humble. Got to see Toto open for Journey last year. First time in my entire life I got to see both bands. Toto was incredible. They were beyond tight and they really enjoyed being on stage and playing. It was fantastic.
I saw Toto live on their XIV tour when I was 11, and watching Lukather play guitar inspired me to start playing, And I’ve been playing ever since, Steve is my inspiration for guitar, so I’m super happy to see this video
Luke is one of those rare people who is so incredibly humble, and who truly cannot comprehend how phenomenally talented he is. His music is such a gift 💜🎵

hes far from humble, baffles me how most people here in the comment section dont think that giving self-praise on every two sentences and painting yourself as a mary sue on most of the stories you tell in an interview isnt a sign of obvious vanity
Both Lukather and Rick have been so good to each other. Steve gave Rick's channel more credibility in the beginning ... and now I have even a greater appreciation for Steve's musical genius / legacy due to Rick's channel.

O.M.G. I saw this pop up on my way to bed and now I'm getting to sleep an hour and 22 minutes late. This was the greatest interview/conversation I have ever seen with Luke. How could you not just love this guy? He is so real, humble, self-effacing and brilliantly talented. Rick, you have become THE ambassador between us everyday players and our heroes/influences. I cannot thank you enough for what you do. I know you do it because you love it and - because you can. There is only one Rick Beato, and we are so grateful to have you.

This is the absolute best interview I've ever seen with Steve Lukather. It seems like he's really excited to do this and is having fun. I just love hearing these stories of how these legendary musicians came up with this incredible music in a time where you had to have serious talent because you didn't have the computers to create it. And Jesus, that solo at the end that he improvised over that backing track, I had chills running throughout my body, WOW. Rick Beato has hit another one out of the park with this interview and like I said before, Rick Beato is the best music channel on RUclips.
If you haven't seen it you might enjoy The Wrecking Crew documentary. Goes deep into a lot of of the people that Steve was discussing. Amazing talent level.
@@ChuckChrome oh yeah, The Wrecking Crew is legendary and it's were some of the greatest Talent came out of including Glen Campbell who was an amazing guitars himself. Crazy all the albums that they played on and didn't get credit for and a lot of people don't even know. A lot of those mid-60s bands that came out of Laurel Canyon had The Wrecking Crew playing on them.

So relaxed, so down to earth
It is sad when someone has so much talent, has done so much hard work to hone his craft but (apart from Toto I guess) hasn’t been financially rewarded commensurately for the stuff he did. Yet someone can do something on Instagram with little work and earns millions. Luke is a freakin’ legend and his legacy will last beyond the social media cycle.

I saw Ringo Starr earlier this year with my daughter. The band is all old guys who are still great musicians. My daughter is 40, but she knew many of the songs.
She was blown away by the entire band, especially the multi-talents of Edgar Winter and Steve Lukather's guitar work. Whenever he played a solo, she kept saying "Who knew?"
She didn't have to explain. I knew exactly what she meant, because he wore a very loud jacket and he had this big head of pure white hair. He basically looked like a parody of Doc Brown from Back to the Future, but, his solos were effortlessly fantastic.
My daughter later said something to the effect that he sounds like a young, hot shot, gunslinger gutarist, but he looks like a mad scientist on a kid's TV show.
To be fair, I am willing to bet there’s a large number of 40 year olds (like myself) who not only know every Beatles song that isn’t “Carnival of Light”, but have opinions on whether Edgar Winter was better with Rick or Ronnie on guitar.
@Tyrannosaurine I didn't mean to imply that ALL 40 year Olds don't know older music. My comment was mostly about my daughter, who, in fact, did know the majority of the songs on the setlist but she was less familiar with the extreme level of musicianship on display at a Ringo Starr concert
I also highly doubt that if you questioned 100 different 40 year old WOMEN, you'd be having multiple long conversations about the merits of Ronnie Montrose vs. Rick Derringer with Edgar Winter, or how many different instruments Edgar can play, or the fact that Steve Lukather played guitar on hundreds if not thousands of recordings, or the fact that Ringo sang lead on so many different early Beatles songs and covers.
I know this is true because I couldn't even have those conversations with girls back in the heyday of Ringo's current bandmates. There's a good reason that I saw two different Journey concerts, about one year apart in the 70s and one concert was a total sausage fest and the other one was a sea of love struck crying teenage girls.
No, disrespect to women, but in a general sense, there's simply no comparison to the level of absolute musicianship/musicology nerdiness of males compared to females. We will geek out over odd guitar tunings on certain songs, or weird time signatures, or the fact that Dick Dale played guitar upside down, even if we don't play guitar. Most non-musician females don't do that.

For sure. Saw him live last year. He radiated kindness and stayed so humble throughout the entire show, you could tell he enjoyed every minute on that stage and was grateful for being there with the band.

This is a masterclass musician interview. No BS, no PR, just a discussion about and true passion for the music... and some playful stories along the way. Great job.
Absolutely and that’s what makes Ricks interviews so unique. Be it Billy Corgan, Sting, Tim Henson,… - they all feel that this is about music/passion, no record-/tour-promotion or whatever. Just 2 musicians talking MUSIC. So once again: thank you, Rick for providing your guests this “safe haven” and us with this great content, insights, stories.

When he starts playing to that backing track, you can see the instant transformation into full on musician mode. He listens for 1 second, then talent, instinct, and inspiration just takes the wheel.

Luke is just a beast who tries at every opportunity to talk about how great OTHER people are.
He has it all..time, feel, ideas and technique.
People can dislike Toto or whatever they want but there is absolutely no doubt that Luke is an astonishing musician who takes time to look out for other players.

I love this interview so much, I can't thank Rick enough.
I watch it when I am bored, I watch it when I need some laughs, I watch it when I need some insights, I watch it when I feel like I'm stuck in a rut with my guitar playing, I watch it during my lunch breaks. It's just such a wonderfully easy-going interview, the way Rick leaves Luke the space to let him tell his war stories, share his musical insights into all of those records and sessions and just making it feel like there's two buddies talking about the old days.
Such a humble dude and a natural storyteller. Awesome.
For me, this is the best interview in the universe. It's like being down the pub with Luke and sitting there, head in hands, listening to this guy telling you the story of your teenage musical dreams. One of the best 90 mins I've ever spent.

What separates Lukather from almost every other guitarist is that he made and contributed to memorable songs. That’s the highest compliment you can give to any musician.
100% - too many people lose track of this fact when assessing and rating musicians. For me, the bottom line in valuing a musician is, how great was the music that you produced from your instrument?

However, there's many other legendary guitarists who've also had some pretty memorable music careers IMO. 2 guitarists Steve already mentioned & admires in this interview being Dean Parks & Larry Carlton. A few other legendary guitarist's are Joe Messina, Tommy Tedesco, Steve Cropper, Hank Garland, Glen Campbell, James Burton, Chet Atkins, Brent Mason, George Barnes, Tim Pierce, Paul Jackson Jr., etc... Whether you think I'm being bias or not I'd also put my buddy on that list who's had a pretty stellar career in music & one of the top go to studio session players & touring guitarists in Nashville & still kicking azz! "Tom Bukovac" AKA Buk, Little Tommy, Session Man, Starship Trooper, Uncle Larry. Plus, Buk's just a really good dude who continues to pay it forward as busy as he is in the studio or on tour. Buk still takes time in his day by giving free guitar lessons & insight to the music business, guitars & gear. Which to me say's a lot & separates Tommy that you don't really see to many other pro musicians doing out there to much. Just saying... +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul+

I saw him being interviewed for a Premier Guitar RUclips video a few years ago and that’s all he did was interrupt, kept playing stuff while Jon Bollinger was trying to ask him questions and was just all over the place. Maybe he’s got ADHD or something.
This was such an enjoyable interview. Rick barely had to say anything and Luke just went off with all these great stories about the old days. What a complete legend both these guys are. Thank you Rick for making this happen.

To see Lukather talk about EVH like that shows how great Eddie was and shows how much of a humble guy Luke is.
I keep watching this video as many others. Luke is absolutely larger, far larger than life. When he is around, magic really happens in every sense. And Rick... Well I don't think we never will be able to repay you for all the good and happiness you are bringing to our lives, Every time life is hard, watching your material is a relief and a huge deal of hope. I'm always amazed that no one ever mentions Lukather's solo on Peter Cetera's song, Limelight. One of my all time favorite solos by anyone ever. He just rips with such incredible emotion.

Check out Michael Boltons first 2 albums, before he went down the soft pop road. Bruce Kulick from Kiss did the solo work on the second album....good stuff.
I’ve just spent the last hour and 22 minutes with a huge grin plastered to my face. That has to be one of the coolest interviews of any kind I’ve ever seen. I’m 52 so I’ve seen my share lol.
It helps that Lukather is not only one of the greatest session musicians in history but he’s like listening to your buddy tell stories from when you were kids and a genuinely cool dude. You’ve out done yourself Rick! Rock and roll

See his interview on Musician`s Hall Of Fame on here. There`s a lot of great stuff on there. The host recently passed and he was collecting so much valuable info on there.
Steve got that old-school 70's and 80's vibe in his personality --- the kind of dude you just wanted to sit on the back porch and share some beers with him and watch him just jam on his guitar with whatever came in his head --- lots of laughs and just hanging out!
Exactly Christopher I was wondering if I really had an hour and 22 minutes and it was entirely riveting. I can listen to this kind of stuff all day and I'm not even a guitar player. I'm a drummer.

Absolutely love Steve Lukather. He is such a generous and humble person despite his incredible resume and all around musical talent. I’ve never seen him give a bad interview he is just such a joy to listen to.
I love that about him (& others like him). I can't stand (for an example) 1980's Steve Vai "Look at me! I need attention 24 hours a day!!" schtick & stage routine (not mocking the guys playing & these days he is way chill compared to the DLR era - another guy I can't stand btw).
Jesus, when he just blazes out in the solo and it's just perfect. Worth waiting for.

This is a gift! Rick Beato, you are a gift to all of us who love the history of music, and for me especially the history of the studio musician scene I would have loved to be a part of. Toto is probably my favorite band along with Steely Dan. I long for stuff like this, The Wrecking Crew, all of that stuff. This is such a brilliant interview. So inspiring and so touching at the end. I didn't know anything about this man, now i'm in love with this man!!! So prolific and knowledgeable, yet so easy going. I am myself a rhythm guitar player, so i know exactly what he is talking about saying - it's not as easy as it seems to be. I got to play drums one night at a show with Larry Carlton and Terry McMillian with no rehearsal at a club called Cafe Milano in Nashville. Talk about sitting high on a drum stool watching and listening to every note hoping not to make a mistake. One of the greatest musical highlights of my life.
That was a GREAT spot. Never got to play there but saw some cool acts there.

And Steely Dan... They were always on the radio when i was growing up, so I just took them for granted. It's amazing how much better they have gotten in the past 40 years. 😉
Most of the music from that time sounds dated but theirs is really timeless.
He wasn't in as many Steely Dan songs as suggested around the web.
I have watched this interview at least three times. It hasn't gotten old yet. Steve is like an old friend that you can't get enough of. The man is so much fun, down-to-earth and an inspirational individual - so unassuming. Toto is my favourite band of all time, from their debut album to present. Never get tired of listening to their music - such a unique sound. Every song is so different; Sometimes, I just play a marathon of their songs in my car for the whole day! They're so good! Wish I could have met these fellas. Thank you Steve for the music and being such an inspiration to many young musicians. May you continue to us fans great music. Peace man.

No one in this planet approaches guitar like Lukather. The taste, the choice of notes, the tempo, the melody. And he carries so much soul with him. Not to mention when he SINGS and PLAYS, specially the ballads. What a WORLD CLASS MONSTER MUSICIAN. God bless you man

In this instance, perhaps, but I've seen a friend of mine, who's a professional guitarist, to just start playing on completely never heard of track that i provided and gotten the idea of it within 5-10 seconds. It's an amazing skill that's been hones to razor edge by playing 8 hours a day (I've witnessed him practicing daily, it's crazy) over decades and audiating, composing, reading music... understanding chords and modes... it's not a skill you get by just noodling around aimlessly.
And he's done this multiple times... so it's completely possible thing to do.
Rick, I think you ask all of the questions that musicians actually want to have asked and respond to. They get to speak whats on their minds with someone that understands uniquely what they are saying which makes for amazing interviews...not just the standard questions that a musician has been asked a million times. You know how to approach it from the ultimate fan point of view and we as fans get to enjoy fantastic interviews like this one.
Man, Luke has been one of my favourite guitarists, singers and composers for so many years. It´s a blessing to be gifted with so much talent and to keep working hard on doing always his best for so many years. His expresiveness always catches my ear. Chapeau.
What an absolute champ of a human being and so talented. It's a shame we can't all sit down and have a beer and chat with Luke sometimes in our lives.
People do not really understand who Steve Lukather is and what mark and contributions he has left on the music world, a true musician, true guitar player in every sense. His life experiences and stories are amazing. I could sit and listen to him for hours and hours and hours. I could rewatch this 10 more times and learn something new.
They don’t? I do.
He’s a match for Beck for sure. His contribution to music is enormous.

You have no clue about what people know or don't know. Stop pretending you're above the crowd.
One of our all time best stories was a bunch, as in about 200, of us sitting on the floor, amps, you name it in a smallish music store for a guitar clinic with the guitarist from Autograph S. Lynch. At one point he said every one of you in here has at least one album/cd with a guy on it that you will never guess. We threw out names like SRV. Bunch of different heroes. Even EVH. S. Lynch said, nope, not even EVH. Studio time is so expensive when EVH is having an off day, they bring in this guy because his timing is so dead on. (true quote, not making it up. and S. Lynch had total reverence when he said it). When we finally gave up, S. Lynch said Steve Lukather. Luke is so dead on, his timing is so perfect, if they need someone in a pinch, they call Luke in. Our minds were blown. We looked at one another (all 200 of us lol), almost in disbelief. Can't speak for anyone else, but this metalhead, G. Lynch disciple, King EVH follower, ended up being a HUGE Toto fan. Even made a point to go out and track down all things live Toto, especially dvd, could get my hands on. If you haven't seen it, highly recommend the Live In Paris 1990 show.

lol Rick your patience is amazing. Steve isn't trying to be rude he just interrupts and takes over because he's just such a big hearted kid when it comes to music and guitar playing and it's nice to see him still have that spirit! Thank you for allowing him to demonstrate that in this interview!
That was a very good way of addressing that, @Tony Telfort. I had to look past it, too, but knowing his background and seeing him be real helped with that. And then it becomes a pure joy to witness two experienced, savvy musicians and pros "talk shop". Fabulous!

@@carverac Yes and no... I just feel like there were many floating points that come into the light and then fade to the next point, creating a warmth that both of these musicians are familiar with; it's called live performance. There is no predefined structure; they both know that they want to have fun and build a bit of banter (musically speaking - Tension) and they don't need to resolve every phrase. It's a rare and beautiful thing in my opinion :)

I am a little ashamed to admit that I had never heard of Steve Lukather but was completely engaged and mesmerised listening to this interview. Amazing stuff.

Crazy,I grew up with Steve. We went to the same elementary school,lived in the same neighborhood,played little league baseball together and listened to Beatles records in his bedroom. Such fun times.

I’m here because we saw Toto perform last night in Baltimore. They were absolutely amazing, and Steve was the highlight of the evening for me.
One of your best guests. Then musicality is just pouring out of him. What a treasure trove of great anecdotes.
As a guitar player I remember the first time I heard that outro solo in Rosanna, I was like HOOOOOOLD UP, who is this guy? And the solo for "I'll be over you" is still to this day my all time favorite pop music "slow" solo. It's so simple but there is so much passion and musical swagger in that solo, gets me every time.
Watch the Montreux 1991 gig- they play 'I'll be over you' and it's pretty special.

This was probably the greatest interview of a musician I've ever watched. Full stop. So much information. So many golden nuggets.
Man, the '70s and '80s, and the L.A. studio scene. All those absolute monsters.
Only one regret. Towards the end, Luke mentions that there aren't many new players, or new music, that advance the harmonic game. (I'm paraphrasing.) It was a perfect lead in for Rick to bring up Guthrie Govan, the ultimate example of what they were describing at that moment. I really wish Rick would have mentioned Guthrie. They needed to talk about him. They talked about basically everyone else, including people like Tim Henson, but GG needed to be mentioned there. I thought for sure Rick would jump on it, but nope, he let the moment pass.
Rick, whatever you have to do, make a full-length GG interview like this one happen. You're the one to do it. It has to be you. As thoughtful and articulate as GG is, it will be a Mt. Olympus-level interview. The one he did with Lee from Anderton's a few years ago was great, but Lee can't talk guitar/music the way you do. Now that you've met GG, and made the "Scariest guitarist in rock" video, this has to happen.
Right. Although I think he mentions Tim Henson in the sense that he has an "arrangers ear". I don't like TH music to be honest, not my style. But I can hardly doubt the guy makes incredible intricate arrangements.
Toto played in Singapore in 1992. I met them when they went to the Hard Rock Cafe after their concert. They jammed on stage with the resident band for at least 4 songs. Eager to play and had fun doing so. It wasn't a chore for them. Wonderful bunch of guys. Much respect for them.
First interview I've heard with Lukather, always liked his playing, but after this interview I'm an even bigger fan!!! 🎸

Mind completely blown. Luke is 65, I am 68, every thing he talked about I lived those records when they came out. It was like "this is your life of music" as told by someone on the inside. I have to watch this 50 more times. Huge respect, new respect and new appreciation for/of Steve....wow. Thank you Rick!!!

Wow! Steve has such humility when he speaks of The Beatles as if they were sent from Heaven, but I have seen Toto perform countless times and they are incredible. They are truly one of the greatest bands to ever exist.
(Moreover, he echoes the sentiment of many "Greats" when it comes to mastering music: don't skip the fundamentals. Go back to the basics everyone! =))
Beatles bearly knew music theory. If I can remember, Rick or some other music channel did that samething on the Beatles on how much music theory did they know.
@@henrys.6864 yet Steve considers them as some sort of “God sent” group of people. It underlines how important creativity also is…they were true pioneers. People such as my 15 years old daughter being a Beatles fan in 2023 probably echoes his sentiment🙏🏻

i saw them play twice on the Tambu tour, after having seen steve vai of which i knew ToTo more, but seeing vai technical ability is one thing, but seeing Lukather and ToTo was technical with feeling, steve is a mighty mechanic of music, and so incredibly musically switched on and it shows in everything he touches. if someone doesn't have respect for Steve it's because they do not know what and who he is, the Music Man, and i can't respect someone who cannot respect him!
