We have about 6 hours of daylight currently, it is always cloudy (raining at least half the time). I am also melanated and work an office job. I am a great example of using or not using sunscreen. I am 70 and in my growing up years no one stressed using sunscreen. We used to bake on the beach with baby oil. I had a skin cancer that needed an incision from my below my eye to my lips to surgically remove it. The surgeon did a great job, but the scar will be there permanently. I also could have died from this if it had not been found. I wear sunscreen every day and use a hat when outside. Once the damage is done it’s done and will keep showing up as you get older. Wear the sunscreen. Your face and body will thank you. I also wear sunscreen on my exposed body parts during the summer. ❤️

    Some of the worst sun poisoning I ever got was skiing in Austria. I was sick for two days from over exposure. I had no idea about the reflection of the sun until the nurse at the lodge told me. I told her but I am black and she looked at me and said I will alert the sun:( That was 20 years ago and I wear SPF 70 when skiing, hiking swimming and SPF 50 walking around NYC. The more you know.

She had a pretty brown skin for austrian standarts. That helped me and my husband to develope a habit of applying SPF because no one is safe. Old generation here likes roasting themselves on a sun all summer and i call those people "a skin cancer group". Unfortunately, many of us learn on mistakes and we are lucky if it was just a bad sunburn in Austrian Alps

I have been very careful to wear sunscreen daily since I was 23 ,(I am 53 now,). My facial skin has thanked me for it. Unfortunately I was not thoughtful enough to wear sunscreen on my forearms and hands. I thought because I was olives skinned and never burned in the past that I was safe. Now my forearms and hands show it. I thank you so much Dr. Eris for discussing blue light from our phones, altitude and the location on the planet. However, I have to take into account that we have snow a lot of days, and that I sit right by the window the whole day. When your ventilation system is old (I know the drill) and you can smell whatever your neighbor is having for dinner (over here, the above one looooves his f-ing bacon, every day, it smells💩) What I do is, put on the oven, put in a little bowl (oven safe) with cinnamon and something to dissolve it, like a tiny bit of butter, neutral oil or such. Habit from years and years living in sunny California (don't live there anymore 🎉) being a bus driver and in the sun all day, i don't wear makeup so that makes it easy since I love my sunscreen and it feels so wonderfully moisturizing on my skin it's a pleasure to wear. Big plus: I just don't worry about UV index, i know I'm protected and at 56 I'm grateful for my obsessive habit!😅 If you find a sunscreen you love it won't be such a chore to use it. In Poland sun in December rises a few minutes before I leave my house (I have 20 min to the office) and goes 15 minutes before I leave the office. On weekdays wearing sunscreen doesn't really make sense, although I sometimes use it as moisturiser.
    On the weekends, if I plan to go for a walk, I do put sunscreen on.

    LOL, it has been known long ago that sun after 10 am and until 4 pm can be dangerous and the morning one is fine. Mid latitudes Europe do not need any sunscreen if you go to work at 6.30 am and come back after 5 pm. Or if you drive to and back from work anywhere. Thanks for putting some common sense in this insane push to lather oneself in sunscreen 24/7/365

    The uv rays being reflected on the snow is why you are supposed to wear ski goggles or at least sunglasses while skiing. You can get snow blindness where you go blind for a few days. I'm surprised you didn't get it from not wearing ski goggles when you skied.

    I only go out for a walk after 4 in the shade, with a UPF hat and clothes, a portable fan and plastic rimmed sunglasses. I use tinted mineral sunscreen as well as makeup with mineral sunscreen in it. I live in Houston where the UV is typically above 6. I walk in the shade, but still have issues with my Melasma getting worse 😢

    • @Espritlumiere
      @Espritlumiere Месяц назад +1

      Your mineral sunscreen and makeup might be the problem. SPF makeup doesn't give the correct SPF unless you apply the correct amount, and that's near impossible with makeup. I'd suggest trying chemical sunscreens with better filters under your makeup and seeing if that helps!
