I started extending my daily face, neck, chest regimen to my hands and forearms - just about 2 months ago. I’m stunned at the improvement. I added a vitamin K product to the top of my hands and forearms at night, followed by a moisturizer. In the morning, vitamin C serum, moisturizer and on the hands a layer of Vaseline, which I re-do once during the day. I’m a big hand washer, house chores, painting, decorating projects person, and that layer of Vaseline makes a huge difference. I’ve also gotten rid of most of the brown spots by treating with tiny dots of RetinA 2/3X a week. Plus Sun Block! I wish I had been so diligent decades ago.
I’m so glad that you’ve shared this comment. I started a skincare program about 6 weeks ago and I have seen improvements. I’m like you in that I am constantly busy with my hands. The Vaseline is a great idea. Can you please share what vitamin K product you use and also your retinol product? Is it an over the counter? Now that I am comfortable with morning and evening face and neck routines, I added a routine for my forearms and feet. Might as well work on the hands now, too.
I have crepey hands, I have used my face cream on my hands. It does not bother me. I don't have brown spots or discoloration. I don't expect to look 30 for the rest my life. As I age, I like myself so much more
I’m 64 years old and my face looks younger than my years. I do of course use good skin care. I don’t use a multitude of serums but I do use vitamin C in the am and retinol in the pm. I have been using both on my hands as well. I recently noticed that I my hands are looking a little older so I now use Gold Bond retinol cream on my arms and hands in the pm. That is something that another dermatologist on You tube recommended. I also have hand exzema and have been using a 22% Urea cream on my hands after every hand wash and wear gloves doing dishes or any house cleaning. I don’t ever intend to do any in office procedures on my face or hands. I will take care of my skin and age with grace.
I also have severe eczema, my hands stay very dry and itcy and red and swollen and bleedy all throughout winter and I recently realized Vaseline was incredibly effective! The dryness was gone in just one day and my skin was back to intact and healed in a few days
Dr. Sam. I see Vaseline and Mineral Oil recommended and used by many. I don’t understand… these are petroleum products, made with hydrocarbons, gasoline ingredients. How is that good on our skin and bodies ? Also…, I would love to know if you have a video for women in their 70s. Seeing commercials and influencers 20-40 yrs. old doesn’t help much. Your videos are so encouraging and you have so much guidance. You are truly a blessing, wish I’d found your channel years ago ! 😊🌺😊
I put sunscreen on my hands Every day, my face, my neck, my ears - all SPF 50 - there is No Way I could ever afford these treatments so I am doing the best I can with my skincare. Very happy to have discovered this channel :)
O’keeffe’s Working Hands is great for overnight. Make sure to get the tube rather than jar. Works wonders on dry hands, is unscented, and budget friendly!
Wow so helpful! I’ve been using my facial skincare on my hands, but didn’t realize that the hands get more sun exposure. I typically just wipe whatever sunscreen is left after applying on my face to the back of my hands. But now I’ll use more on my hands. I also didn’t realize that protecting the hands while washing dishes is anti-aging- no wonder all the people in K-dramas use waterproof gloves! Thanks again, it’s so fun to learn about skincare and procedures and lifestyle choices to look better
Your video is spot on bcos I am about to get Radiiesse hands filler tomorrow. I am 48 but my hands look skinny, with all blood vessels and ligaments pop out since in my late 30s. Used all hands creams out there and retinol cream but no improvement. I decide to get the filler bcos i became afford the price and got discount. Thank you so much for this video.
My hands are fair & I always have been thin skinned (as I’m very slim) I have used retin-A on them for years As an esthetician, I’m also hyper aware of the sun damage. I do use spf daily & often wear spf gloves when driving. I’ve done chemical peels also. My dermatologist used a hyaluronic filler on the backs of my hands & I loved the results. A yr later I asked for another vial , and now am much happier with having some volume to cover the veins & tendons. Thank you for your recommendations! They’re all excellent!
I was getting my brown spots frozen once a year for 10 years. It is very painful. Then I discovered Neutrogina sun block 100%. That was 15 years ago and I never got brown spots again. When I am a passinger in the car, I always put my hands under a hat on my lap for long rides. This is a game changer.
Or get sunblocking gloves. I have a long commute in a sunny climate. Sunscreen diligently but this summer my 3 tiny sunspots on my left, driver's side, hand doubled. Finally bought some gloves. Very comfortable to wear.
Ya I have been doing 2+ hours driving each day in the sunny California to work forgetting to put sunscreen on my hands for 4 years ( I did cover my face and wore sunscreen), and now I’m in my early 40s, and my hand looks so old and dry , and my green blood vessels are so visible 😢
A few years ago I started using Australian Gold tinted sunscreen on my hands. It protects my hands from sun damage and the tint helps my hands look their best!
I'm about to turn 71 & the last couple of years I've REALLY noticed my hands aging. I, like you, carry my skincare, sunscreen & tretinoin down to my hands.I don't kniw yhat they look better, but they aren't worse, so that's something! Thanks for all of your great advice on everything SKIN!
Thanks to Dr Ellis, I have been paying attention to my hands for the last 4 years. Being in my early 50s I have just started seeing some faint dark spots appearing. So now I am on it! Anything going on my face, night and day goes on my hands. Sunscreen during the day and have just bought some gloves for driving. For golf I think I will adopt another suggestion in the comments about wearing 2 gloves not just one - great idea when you're out in the sun for 4-5 hrs in Australia 🦘
Remember your wrists too. They can be easy to forget, kind of like the neck and décolletage. When applying lotions or creams to my hands now, I dot the backs of my wrists first to ensure they get coverage.
I never really did much for my hands until I turned 58 ish when they would feel dry and the dryness felt like the back of my hands hurt with tightness… I now try to exfoliate and put on hand cream more often and even spread my cuticle oil down to the backs of my knuckles and hands. Thank you for this video.
Another great video, Thanks so much for what seems like quite objective information. I am considering treating my hands for the reasons you described. I've had several face treatments, and my hands feel like such an age giveaway.
Please do a video about skincare for breast cancer patients on estrogen reducing medications (tamoxifen, AIs) From what I understand, collagen stimulating procedures don’t work very effectively without estrogen.
I’m currently living in South Korea and people absolutely cover themselves from the sun! I also carry a sunscreen stick to reapply specifically to the backs of my hands.
i bought retinol to use in my face but i have very sensitive skin and it stung and hurt but i don't have any problems now using it on my hands instead!
I was just window shopping Prequel yesterday. Some time between prime day and Xmas, I'll likely splurge on this very modestly priced line. So many great products ❤
I am turning 70 and my hands look it! My grand-daughter asked me, "Nana, what are those spots on your skin?". I told her that it was sun damage and that is why we always insist that she wear sunscreen before sun exposure. Also, I agree that Kiehl's is the best!!! Jury is out if I am going to do any procedure. I will start of by curbing the sun's effect on these old hands by putting your gloves on my Xmas wish list as they are super-cute!
Love the advice that caring for your hands is important for a lifetime! I was blessed with advice from a wise aunt to always wear gloves when you wash dishes. At 66 yo, my hands look pretty good imo 😊. Gloves protect your nails and cuticles, and when winter comes, it’s good proactive behavior in addition to good hand cream! I like Melaleuca Renew Intensive Skin Therapy. Super helpful video! Thanks, doc!
Great video! I'm 59 and I've been using SPF on my face and hands every day since I was a teenager. I'm also now using adapalene, twice a week, again on my face and hands. I have sensitive skin and don't tolerate it more often. It seems to have some success :)
Just started using estradiol on the backs of my hands and have been bringing down my skincare to my hands for years now. Hopefully it’ll be a great preventive measure!
Supergoop has a hand sunscreen SPF 50 and Unsun has a SPF 15. Eucerin has a SPF 30, Gold Bond has a SPF 20 and Sun Bum has a SPF 15. There are also retinol hand creams from necessaire, soft services theraplush, and chantecaille.
This video is very timely for me! I've recently noticed how old my hands are looking. I have never used anti-aging products on them. Thanks for the suggestions!
From personal experience, if you are prone to melasma, be careful with the use of vaginal estrogen cream anywhere else on your skin! I tried using mine on my neck and chest for only a few days before I noticed a new spot of melasma (with no new or recent sun exposure). I've also been using the estradiol gel since I'm allergic to many adhesives, and after 2 months of use, I have 3 new brown spots where I apply the gel every night. This is, of course, just my experience but if you know that you're prone to melasma, do a spot test with your estrogen cream somewhere you won't mind getting brown sports first before applying it to your hands or your face! Otherwise, the estradiol gel and cream have been absolutely fantastic medications for their intended purpose and I'm so glad that we can all talk about peri/menopause more openly now than ever before. If you're in your early 40's please do yourself a favor and start learning about the symptoms now so you can be prepared. I wasn't and suffered from severe brain fog for 2 years before seeking treatment... don't be me!
@@Alloy-p3u Re the melasma, the same thing happened to me. Have never had brown spots on my arms but within a few weeks of using estradiol gel on my arms I started getting brown spots.
I started retinol about three months ago in the back of my hands, and after that soaks in I use AmLactin at night and my hands look 15 years younger. I used to clean for a living and never wore gloves.
The one thing that I do that I didn’t hear you specifically mention is using AHA/BHA creams on the back of my hands overnight. It’s made a huge difference in removing sun spots. I’m 69 and very happy with my skin.
All of my sun damage on my hands, brown spots, and also on the top of my feet occurred before my 20th birthday as I lived in the Caribbean and I was an athlete. I have been applying my skincare to my hands, tretinoin, Vitamin C and sunscreen and the spots are less noticeable and the skin looks plump. I wear gloves when gardening and driving. I bring all my skincare down to my decolletage as well.
I'm only in my 30's, but I've worked as a farmer, dish washer and preschool teacher, and I garden and do a lot of diy house projects. The skin on my hands is destroyed. Something that I have been doing a treat (I try to never do single use items) is fill a pair of latex or nitrile gloves with lotion, aloe, oil, glycerin, and aquafor or petroleum jelly. I mix it up really well and then have my hands sit inside for 15-20 mins (while taking a bath or watching a tv show). Then I take them off and rub the access into my hands. I feel like it's really helping with my skin barrier. I bet if I remembered to put my sun screen on my hands that would take me over the finish line.
I started wearing 2 gloves while golfing (instead of the typical one) when I was in my 20s to help protect by hands from premature aging. :) That being said I'm really bad about applying sunscreen to my hands and it's something I really need to get better at doing.
I am a formulator and creator for medicinal type cremes and i make a wild yam creme that fixes that. all organic, vegan etc. I am very much against industrial chemicals etc and I have seen great results on myself and customers. I already went thru menopause and I use hormone creme as well and I did not have hot flashes or any of that.
I just turned 60 and noticed crepey skin in the last year or so on the back of my hands. While I've sometimes put serums on the back of my hands, I've never thought of my retinol (I use OTC). I'll start do that. I really like the handcream from EOS. I have tried to be more consistent with using it on a regular basis. It does help.
I just had a few different laser treatments this morning and one was to the back of my hands and my forearms to remove the dark spots. I’m going to combine it with my skin cuticles Silimarin serum and my face moisturizer. Thank you for the recommendations. I’ll post again once the laser treatment has healed.
I have used my Retin A on the back of my hands for about a year now, and it's been a game changer. Also, sunscreen ALWAYS on the back of your hands and use driving gloves!
I rub a hyperpigmentation serum twice daily into any age spots and it seems to keep them at bay. But paying for in-office treatments for my hands would be a big luxury I could not afford. I'll focus on my face for any in-office treatments.
I use tinted on face only over my Korean sc and on neck, dec use Korean sunscreen- on hands I let Korean sunscreen absorb before getting in car and putting on UPF gloves. I use a Korean sun stick to reapply- I think it is more the US mineral sunscreens that leave the zinc cast residue everywhere . I had that issue until changing to the Korean
I used to play tennis for years and the sunscreen on my legs completely discolored my black leather seat (in my latest car), ugh. The younger generation is taught to drive with hands at 8 and 4, not 10 and 2, so I do avoid the sun on my hands by driving that way. In the last five years I was wearing sun sleeves while exercising outdoors, but they didn't cover the hand, although some long sleeve sun shirts have that option. I'm definitely wearing gloves as the weather gets cold here. I think it would be odd to do it in year-round warm weather places but I'd rather get "looks" and questions about that than have all the office work done that she talked about.
Thank you for this video. Would like to see on on the blood leakage under the skin on the forearms of seniors. They even bleed sometimes. This is opposed to the purple bruises on arms that seniors get.
I’m a horseback rider and I wear my long sleeved sun shirts with the thumb holes year round. And usually riding gloves on top. But I will be more diligent with my facial treatments on my hands ❤
I am an Australian woman in my sixties, and living in the skin cancer capital of the world. My advice to everyone…..use a sunscreen everyday, make sure you apply the appropriate amount and reapply regularly, and DO NOT consider using any sunscreen product that is less than 50+. Almost every person I know has had treatments for skin cancer, including melanoma. Please take skin cancer prevention seriously.
I have always included hands in my beauty routine…especially sunscreen. I also like to cover them when I plan to be outside a lot. That has helped…but as I age further, the loss of collagen is more noticeable…but I am 61… I am ok with that
I use Lipobase Repair.I have terrible hands,i used to wash soooo often and bad (i have ocd..)Now im better with ocd-thanks to God,only God helped me!!And help me every second!
I wear full length upf gloves when I drive, I also buy the short ones when I travel and I know I’m renting a car. I don’t care what others think of me. I also use glycolic acid and retinol on my body and use abibi sunscreen stick as well.
I had to start wearing arthritis gloves much of the time. I don’t know why I didn’t think of the sun protection benefit but then saw the prequel driving gloves. Spot fading def goes faster when your hands are covered & my hands do not have any new spots that Ivenoticed since last spring!
I was thinking about getting Bellafill in the backs of my hands. Dr. Rajani has said that Bellafill is a good biostimulator to use. However, I do have very visible veins so perhaps Radiesse would be better.
I've always used the same products on my hands and forearms that I use on my face. Now that I've gotten into more sophisticated skin care, I mix two or more of the products I'm going to use in the palm of my hand and apply it on my face, neck, and chest with the other hand. When finished, I scoop up, so to speak, half of the product left in the palm and apply it to the back of tht hand and then using the rest of the mixture in the palm, apply it to the top of the other hand. If there's enough, I also spread it up onto my forearms. So the skin on my hands looks terrific! Yes they're bony looking because of the fat loss, but it is what it is and I'm more than happy with how healthy and youthful the skin is.
My hands looked old even as a young kid. I noticed the difference early comparing my hands, nails and palms to others. My nails have always had vertical lines and only small half moons on my thumbs. My palms are full of lines and the top pf my hands have always had thin skin. Nothing I've tried through out my life time has made a difference. I do need to use a lot of lotion and wear rubber gloves when cleaning, As a healthcare professional excessive washing of hands made it difficult.
My favorite heavy duty hand cream that I have used at night for at least a decade is The Body Shoo Hemp hand protector. Pretty clean product, but unfortunately the body shop doesn’t exist in the US and canada any longer, and it’s not impossible to import it from abroad. I’ll look at Kiell hand salve, but in the past, I have found some of the formulation too chemical or perfumy which I avoid. I’ll get the gloves (or actually suggest them as a stocking stuffer for Xmas ;)
This is great info - thank you! Unfortunately, Kiehl's is not cruelty-free so I'll just use up what I have, then buy your Prequel ( which is cruelty-free and vegan, yay!). And the gloves look like they'd work really well for Pickleball, outdoors or in! 😊
Since my twenties I’ve been wearing cotton gloves, thick hand cream and cuticle oil at night. Though to be fair I’m also pudgy 😂so the fat helps. I also do the skincare on my hands , and always carry sunblock. I’m not worried about aging, but due to health issues I’m usually getting an I’V in my hands every few months and I want to make sure that my skin is able to handle it.
I've always used sunscreen on the back of my hands so no age spots but I am very slim so the veins and bones are visible. Radiesse would help smooth out the skin over the bones but that's a lot of filler and $$. I'd rather spend money at the dermatologist office for my face, because my $ is limited.
I started using OTC retinol and moisturizer on hands recently haven’t done it long enough to see results Wish I would of thought of it sooner I’m 58 🤞🏼
As someone who previously had this issue which I could not fix for over 5yrs... I would recommend stop using current lipsticks and other products and only use Tatcha Kissu lip mask both night and day for a month. I had eczema and sensitive skin and this fixed it after using countless other options. Less is more until they settle down. ❤
Elizabeth Arden 8 hr lip protectant! I discovered this by accident recently when I got one as a gift. My lips were constantly peeling, every day I used high quality hydrating lipsticks from Estée Lauder, Lancôme, YSL and even Fenty as well as balms, with Cera Ve ointment applied first. That helped but the day I used the EA lip protectant I couldn’t believe it. Now I use it morning and night. No more peeling and flaking. Ever. Their lipsticks are really hydrating and beautiful too, among my favorites..
I am 50 years old and have been obsessed with hand creams since I was a teen. I apply hand cream daily, at least 4 times a day and I also exfoliate my hands weekly. While I do see a loss of volume these days, I'm pretty happy with the way they look, no visible age spots so far. Also Dr. Sam, I can't take my eyes off your lip colour, so pretty! May I know the name and the brand? Love your videos btw.

Thank you 🎉
@@Alloy-p3u Re the melasma, the same thing happened to me. Have never had brown spots on my arms but within a few weeks of using estradiol gel on my arms I started getting brown spots.
@@jacquilamont1078 What did you do to get rid of it? Or did the brown spots disappear on their own?
I started retinol about three months ago in the back of my hands, and after that soaks in I use AmLactin at night and my hands look 15 years younger. I used to clean for a living and never wore gloves.
Would be interested to know which Amlactin you use - the normal or the one with ceramides? I’d not heard of it before and looked it up but not sure 😊
Yep my hands look awful, great ideas, Happy Holidays 🎄🎁
Mine too🤣my hands are worse than anything else on me!
The one thing that I do that I didn’t hear you specifically mention is using AHA/BHA creams on the back of my hands overnight. It’s made a huge difference in removing sun spots. I’m 69 and very happy with my skin.
What brand do you use thanks
All of my sun damage on my hands, brown spots, and also on the top of my feet occurred before my 20th birthday as I lived in the Caribbean and I was an athlete. I have been applying my skincare to my hands, tretinoin, Vitamin C and sunscreen and the spots are less noticeable and the skin looks plump. I wear gloves when gardening and driving. I bring all my skincare down to my decolletage as well.
Hi - what Vitamin C product do you use?
Great video
Thank you for the reminder! Btw that lipstick color looks very nice on you 🥰
My mother's advice has always been to treat my hands with the same care as my face 🤗 I'm 46 and still enjoy baby-soft hands 😊
That color blouse and your lipstick look great on you. Thanks for the tips for hand care.
I’ve done laser twice for my spots and it works! Now to combat the crepey skin 😮…
I love your blush; looks so natural and lit within. What kind do you use?
Is there anything to do for deep knuckle wrinkles?
I just turned 60 and noticed crepey skin in the last year or so on the back of my hands. While I've sometimes put serums on the back of my hands, I've never thought of my retinol (I use OTC). I'll start do that. I really like the handcream from EOS. I have tried to be more consistent with using it on a regular basis. It does help.
This channel is sooo informative
I love it❤
I just had a few different laser treatments this morning and one was to the back of my hands and my forearms to remove the dark spots.
What strength are you using?
Thank you!
That color looks amazing on you 🌷
What about hydroquinone cream for hand and arms?
I rub a hyperpigmentation serum twice daily into any age spots and it seems to keep them at bay. But paying for in-office treatments for my hands would be a big luxury I could not afford. I'll focus on my face for any in-office treatments.
Ok but can we talk about all the sunscreen residue in the car and on my coats and on my leather purse😅? Is it just me???
Try non tinted ones 🙂 the colour makes me dread too for my clothing
The gloves are so lightweight- I live in Arizona and do just fine with them- no one gives me looks and seriously, who cares??
Dr. Ellis, your sweater and lip color today is definitely "your" color!!
Thank you for this video. Would like to see on on the blood leakage under the skin on the forearms of seniors. They even bleed sometimes. This is opposed to the purple bruises on arms that seniors get.
Thank you for this. Unrelated, but what is the lipstick you’re wearing please? It is gorgeous!
Yes wanted this vid, thank you 🙏
Excellent information. so appreciated :)
I’m a horseback rider and I wear my long sleeved sun shirts with the thumb holes year round. And usually riding gloves on top. But I will be more diligent with my facial treatments on my hands ❤
Nice video, 👍❤️
Very helpful information
I use all my skincare products as well as my devices on the back of my hands.
Agreed I don’t think anything under 50SPF is worth buying.
I don’t use any sunscreen at all. And I don’t have any spots of any kind.
I think we all react differently to the sun.
I have always included hands in my beauty routine…especially sunscreen. I also like to cover them when I plan to be outside a lot. That has helped…but as I age further, the loss of collagen is more noticeable…but I am 61… I am ok with that
REALLY need the Barrier Therapy cream to come back in stock. That's what I use on my hands; it works the best.
Love this video. Thanks for clarifying the “liver spot” subject.
I use Lipobase Repair.I have terrible hands,i used to wash soooo often and bad (i have ocd..)Now im better with ocd-thanks to God,only God helped me!!And help me every second!
Excellent!! Thank you.
Great information - thanks. I also find myself curious to know what lipstick you are wearing. Can you please share?
Radiesse and resurfacing and Restalyn Lyft . How much does it cost for each procedure? 😊
I wear full length upf gloves when I drive, I also buy the short ones when I travel and I know I’m renting a car. I don’t care what others think of me. I also use glycolic acid and retinol on my body and use abibi sunscreen stick as well.
Which gloves do you wear?
I've had great results from Habelo Beauty serum and gloves.
Do you know many syringes would be used? I'm thinking that could be expensive. Not hat ever stops me... 🙄
Since red light treatment gloves are available for the hands, do they provide any effective results?
Would love an answer to this question, too!
interested also!
I was scrolling the comments to see if anyone else thought of this. Thanks for bringing it up. Hopefully she’ll answer
I'm 36 and all of skincare products that have left on my fingers after applying go to the back of my hands. And sunscreen, of course.
What about glycolic peels?
My hands looked old even as a young kid. I noticed the difference early comparing my hands, nails and palms to others. My nails have always had vertical lines and only small half moons on my thumbs. My palms are full of lines and the top pf my hands have always had thin skin. Nothing I've tried through out my life time has made a difference. I do need to use a lot of lotion and wear rubber gloves when cleaning, As a healthcare professional excessive washing of hands made it difficult.
Same. You sound like me.
Once I do each step of my skin routine what is left goes on my hands. Vitamin C and tret get there own full application on the hands.
Thanks for the tips! Can I ask where you got the sweater you’re wearing in the video? I love the color.
I've always used sunscreen on the back of my hands so no age spots but I am very slim so the veins and bones are visible. Radiesse would help smooth out the skin over the bones but that's a lot of filler and $$. I'd rather spend money at the dermatologist office for my face, because my $ is limited.
Any advice for nurses who have to us also good sanitizer and wash several times a day?
I started using OTC retinol and moisturizer on hands recently haven’t done it long enough to see results
Wish I would of thought of it sooner
I’m 58 🤞🏼
Dr. Ellis, could you please recommend something for peeling lips? No matter what I put on my lips, has not helped at all!!! Please Help!!! Thank you!
Pure lanolin, the kind new moms use when breastfeeding :)
I apply and reapply sunscreen religiously to my hands. Hoping it’ll pay off when I’m older 😂
Beige and brown gloves would be nice
Loved the video. It was very helpful.
Would love to see your review and medical opinion on the Medicube Age R Booster Pro
What Vitamin C product is best to use on skin?
What about the lights that are used after manicures?
The video addresses volume loss in the back of the hand opposite the palm, but what can you do about volume loss in the fingers?
Hi, anyone we can do for eyebrows.
Dr. Ellis, speaking of hands, would you please address the issue of nail psoriasis?
please do a video anout dyshidrotic eczema!
I was wondering about her lip color too, so pretty!
What is the best tool to use in the shower for cleansing (loofah, washcloth, etc)?
Radiesse ! Wow !😀
