    1- Doesn't thin out skin
    2- Doesn't exfoliate skin
3- can be used with exfoliating acids
4- can be used with vit c
5- low strength can also work, consistency over intensity, number related to type of retinoid is imp
6 - can be used around eyes

      I KNOW THAT FEELING.
At least you get 15 minutes… mine only gave me 3 minutes and didn’t address what I was there for.
Every autumn/winter my skin around my eyes gets dried out, chapped, and really irritated… so I got ahead of it and had an appointment back in September. Instead of treating my dry, cracking skin, she sends me home with fluorouracil cream and tells me it’s because I have Solar damage. The first doctor I ever saw (per my parents) was a dermatologist because of dry skin. I was as not happy… and I’m currently irritated and burning and very pissed off at her right now (since my skin has gotten worse over the past 2 months). Next appointment is in February… but I do t think I can wait that long. My skin hurts 😝

0:30: 🧪 Dr. ShireenIdris debunks common myths about retinols in skincare.
4:26: 🔑 Retinols and exfoliating acids are often confused, but they have different effects on the skin.
8:31: 💡 Combining vitamin C and retinol can be beneficial for the skin, but it's important to understand the ingredients and potential irritation.
12:23: 🔑 Using a lower concentration of retinol consistently over time is more beneficial for the skin than using a higher concentration infrequently.
16:22: 😊 When using tretinoin around the eyes, it is important to avoid applying it directly on the eyelids and instead apply it on the bony part of the lower eyelid, buffering it with Vaseline to reduce irritation.

This was super interesting! I always cringe when people say Retinoids are exfoliants...thank you for the explaining that so clearly. And like you...I have used Rx Tret around around my eyes (not too close) without problem but can NOT tolerate it anywhere near the corners of my mouth or my chin. Instant dermatitis! And nobody ever talks about that area so thank you! And yes please on a Retinoid Deep Dive...especially the difference in strengths.

Yes, please do a video on the percentages & types of retinoids, and how we can gradually increase the strength we are using. Is strength linear as you move across different types? (e.g. is the next step from retinyl ester a low retinol (0.25%) and the next step up from 1.0% retinol a retinaldehyde?) Also, I'm afraid to use products that don't state the concentration, as I have sensitive skin - is that a legitimate concern? How safe is it to assume that eye creams with retinol are a lower concentration? If my eye area gets irritated, that sets me back weeks or even months, but that area where eyelid meets cheek is THE place I need retinoids more than anywhere else.

    • @crimbleland
      @crimbleland Год назад +1

You don’t need to specify between an eye cream or moisturizer, so if you have a 1% retinol you like you can use it around the eyes SPARINGLY and only IF you tolerate it. Go low and slow like she says. I’ve gotten myself used to retinAL around my eyes but no more than 1-2x per week, and NEVER use my retinoid (tretinoin) there.

    • @crimbleland

I also want to encourage you especially if you have hooded eyes/natural bags around your eyes to start to love your natural eye shape. There are some “bags” that will never go away and cannot be helped with even the strongest retinoids. Changing my mindset/goals has really helped with my self esteem. Hope this helps!

I started on a 0.025% and only used it once a week for a few weeks then started increasing it to two times a week and so on until I knew my skin was ready to move up to 0.5%. At times I stopped it altogether if I noticed irritation then started slow again and changed how I applied it according to the seasons i.e. retinol sandwich. It's worth perservering

I'm 32 year old, my skin is naturally very resistant, no wrinkles or lines yet. I started to use tretinon 0,5 consistently about a month ago ( I used it inconsistently several times over the years). I can tolerate tretinoin even on my eyelids, but im afraid to damage them, so I dont apply often. I can't tolerate strong retinol or tretinoin on my neck... I use a retinol serum instead. To manage tretinoin dryness, i listen to my skin, and I use natural oils, niacinamide serum, korean creams and mineral sunscreen, during the day, according to the need. If my skin gets flakey, I skip the retinoic one of two nights, or apply sandwiching with moisturizer. My skin is glowing.

I think a more accurate representation would be that it does thin the stratum corneum (the dead skin layer), but also thickens the dermis. That dead skin layer is protective though, so I personally feel we shouldn’t be overdoing it (hence why our skin feels so sensitive and sun burn prone using retinol or exfoliants).

As far as someone asking if trentinoin can cause cancer, isn't it caused by ingesting Vitamin A in the beta-carotene form? So, not sure if Trent is made out of beta-carotene or regular vitamin A. That might make the difference?

I personally didn’t think it would do anything and anytime I had excess mascara that wouldn’t come off with my cleanser I’d just apply more of the roc under eye because I liked it’s consistency. I have started the retinoid journey with retinol and planning on retinal then possibly Tretinoin. I also am planning on using red light therapy panels in my endeavor to age well. I have been doing research on these. I read tonight to “avoid red light therapy if using Retin-A.”I know that is the same as Tretinoin. My questions for you is 1) Is it true that I need to choose between red light therapy and Tretinoin? 2) Does this only apply to Tretinoin or also to lower-strength retinoids? 3) Could I use a red light therapy mask instead of a stronger panel and still use retinoid products?

This has been my favorite skincare medication since I began practicing👍🏼. So glad you made a great video about how to use it right. I’ve had sooooo many people on Tretinoin “slugging” & coming in with chemical burns🤬 over 2022-2023. If you want to keep your skin to look younger longer this is the best go to medication. Also explaining Fibroblasts, chefs kiss! This is a way to make patients understand what they’re wanting most(for 25+ anyways) more collagen production. One thing I would add is if Retina-A Micro isn’t working, it’s usually because you’re pillowcase is absorbing the little “beads” or it’s getting rubbed off, this is why I prefer just regular, “non-fancy” tretinoin lol. But soooo many patients thought it’s not working, so I switched & my husband didn’t have a prob, but I noticed my skin wasn’t reacting like it should & it clicked, I’m someone who moves a lot while sleeping & my pillowcase actually was the one getting all those benefits😂-teens are usually who I prescribe Retina-A Micro too, not adults btw. But now don’t even prescribe them anymore. Did you also notice this? Just wondering, I’ve never seen it spoken about.

Thank you Dr Shereene! I am 63 and just starting with an otc retinol at unspecified strength (0.3% I read in an article). Used Retin-A in my 30s for adult acne but did not like it. I tend to be sensitive overall but on my face I do not use fragrance or oil. Pores get blocked very easily. This one has a touch of shea butter at the end of ingredient list. Better than comedogenic soybean oil! And I adore my vitamin C, E, hyaluronic acid and EGF serum. I have not had a reaction to either. So my takeaway from this video is that I may be able to use both on the same night once I am used to the retinol. And yay to low dose retinol on chest and neck! I will eventually alternate my glycolic acid and vitamin C serum with the retinol every other night. Maybe never go to every night bc I have to exfoliate regularly! And possibly remain with this strength retinol? Why ruin a good thing if it seems to work over time...I also use products that contain niacinamide, ceramides and peptides. Already have meibomian gland dysfunction but I will try using the retinol over my eye serum only lower on the outside of orbital bone and out to the temple. Thanks for answering everything I needed ❤

I have always been using tretinoin on top of my vitamin c and niacinamide.

First Aid Beauty makes a 0.3% retinol with peptides that is great for people new to retinol and want to start small and work your way up, or if 0.5% is too strong for you. I love it and am using it religiously until I can go back to using my Naturium 0.5% retinaldehyde, which really broke me out when I first started using it. You can get it anywhere. Just FYI 😊

I recently bought the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Serum, which has 0.05% retinol and ascorbyl glucoside (unkown percentage). I immediately started hearing that vitamin C and retinol shouldn't be mixed and that retinol products formulated below 0.2% won't do anything.
I was already looking into buying something stronger despite the fact that my skin was tolerating the serum well and I could use it every night without irritation.
Thank you for the education that you provide

How long is the efficacy of Tretinoin? In other words, when I apply it, how long does it take to "absorb" and start "working" and how long will the effects last? If I apply it tonight, will it still be "working" in the morning? Do the effects of one application last 4 hours or 24 hours, a few days etc?

I’m really glad I found your channel, since my dermatologist retired after I finished my course of treatment with the prescription pills for my acne and successfully switched over to the topical prescription cream, it’s been a long time since then and I’ve just forgotten a lot of what I learned about my prescription cream since then and I have been trying to be more consistent with using it recently so it’s good to have a little refresher course on the dos and don’ts of tretinoin. The only thing I really remember well is that I need to avoid as much sun as possible between 11 and 4 use sunscreen consistently and use shade like a hat or parasol, although I might be conflating a few different doctors advice because I also have heat sensitivity and light sensitivity from some other medications.
