I literally started retinol last week and am still figuring it out, your timing is on point! This is great advice and I will definitely use it - it has cleared up any questions I had!
After my second pregnancy my beautiful perfect skin was completely destroyed by horrible pregnancy melasma. I tried vit C, AHAs, microdermabrasion, niacinamide etc it improved a bit. Then I went on to Retinols for 6 months and eventually to 0.1 percent Tretinoin. Now after 1.5 years my melasma, fine lines, dark circles and under eyes dryness almost gone. You are right. Purge is a myth. First time I tried to start with tretinoin, my skin really freaked out and I stopped for a year. Terrible purge, peeling...I used it too much.( 3 times a week but no moisturizer underneath) I started again recently. Very very carefully. Now I always put moisturizer first and then pea sized amount of tret 2 times a week( started with 1 time a week for 2 months) I'm so happy! No purge, skin is tolerating well. Those tips are VERY useful for beginners. Thank you! 💖
Please talk about sunblocks for sensitive or irritated skin because most mineral one leave a white cast or just oxizied when we put it. And thank u for sharing this nice topics with us
Even though sensitive skin is different for everyone, I thought I would share my sunscreen as I am prone to rashes: Elta MD Elements Tinted. I was using the Elta MD UV Clear Tinted but wanted all mineral and I like the elements one even more...absolutely no reaction or white cast. The Colorescience Tinted one is also great but more pinkish. If you have neutral to warm-toned skin the ELta Tinted should work well.
I think the consensus now is that chemical sunscreens are linked to cancer so I'd rather use a zinc one and look like a ghost/put makeup over it than have a greater risk of cancer.
Thank you Dr. Shereene for such a wonderful and simple explanations of a major skincare routines and recommendations for the skincare products. It helps tremendously. I do have sensitive skin and made almost all mistakes you explained in your videos but I’m following your recommendations and my skin looks much better now 😄
I'm currently working on building my tolerance with retinol 0,5%. I did start with using it 1 day per week over the course of 2 weeks, then I used it 2 times per week - but I've noticed redness higher on my cheeks, so I had to go back to using it once per week. I guess I just have to watch how my skin reacts. Thanks for all the information :)
Gurl, I’m 51 and have not used Retinols yet. Just ordered some and excited to get started slowly as I do have roseacea. Thank you for sharing this info!
I'm so glad this dropped now since I had just requested an easy beginner guide for noobs like me about tackling skin routine and skincare in general!! It would be wonderful if you could continue this as series about some of the acids/ vitamins etc that you have videos on!! But truly as always, I come 60% for Shereen's energy and humor and 40% about actually learning about all skin-related stuff. (get your priorities straight guys)
You are a true Godsend! I have had adverse reactions to Retinol in the past, so per your recommendation I am taking it really slow this time! Only once a week now, and I will gradually increase my usage! Thank you so much for all your advice!
🎉Summary: Retinol Ester -> Retinol -> Retinaldehyde (Retinal) -> Retinoic acid (tretinoin= prescription retin A) 👆Lowest to highest strength. Start with lowest always. Less is more. Use a pea size amount. Consistency over intensity. Use at night. Most retinols are photolabile (unstable in the presence of light) Use 2-3 times a week as a beginner for several weeks. Until the skin can tolerate then use regularly If skin is sensitive, -Don’t wash face before retinol or make sure skin is very dry. -Don’t use exfoliate same night as retinol -Use moisturiser before retinol to buffer the skin -Cicaplast B5 baume to soothe skin
I think she is implying that retinol purge is when people try to go in too hard and too fast on retinol instead of being cautious. If you are careful and start out at lower doses and start 2-3 times a week like she said, it should greatly decrease the chances of irritation which people call “purge.” Just my thoughts based off her comments and my (admittedly layman’s) knowledge of retinol.
I always watch her videos and think: "wow, I love my dermatologist, she is competent and very clear in her explanations" ❤❤ The only problem is that I never stepped in her office. 🤣🤣

My derm prescribed me Adapalene, and my skin has never been better, but i think my skin is “addicted” to it, because if i stop for 3-4 days my acne booms like babies in the 40s gurl.
Same here, must.not.run.out.of.my.Adapalene. I live in Belgium where it is only available on prescription by your derm and mine has a 9 month waiting list. Oh well :)

Started exactly as you said...over the counter stuff, and etc., ended up going to a derm after a yr of not working stuff for me...got the prescription stuff, did what u said-at night consistently for ONE year and woa! RESULTS! Pigmentation amazing and no acne!
yeah... I use way more retinol than that. but I don't find mine spreads well enough to use less... Your moisturiser reccomendations are increadible. They've absolutely been, without a doubt, the key to my tolerance and consistent use of retinol.
Wish I’d been more educated when I first started using tret 10 years ago- I was “more is more” type til I saw how much it aged me! Scared the hell out of me, took years to have courage to start again.
If you use too much you’ll get irritated inflamed skin. I saw myself in harsh daylight and noticed lots of crepey skin around my eyes. Just rougher complexion overall. When I tried again about 5 years ago I was sure to go slow and easy. No issues and saw marked improvement after several months.
The Environ brand's retinol step-up system has totally changed my skin. The five progressive tubes of retinol AVST day/night cream and then the Retinol Serums later on when your skin can tolerate it. Absolutely amazing brand. One's skin adapts gradually so there's never a problem. Not cheap but massively recommend these products.
I have eczema and I tried adapalene for my acne/scars and it worked like a champ but it was painful! but I admit I went too hard😬 so I did my research and I am planning to give it another chance in a much gentler way. Thanks for the tips💜
I started with a low dose of tretinoin from curology. Bad move! Granted I have dry and sensitive skin but it has taken me about a year to get my skin back to somewhat normal. I am now easing into FAB retinol.
The red lip and curls look great on you. Just gorgeous as always ♥ Great advice I use prescription strength retinol but I didn't know what areas to avoid etc. Thank you for educating us ♥
My dermatologist who I've known for 40 years has always promoted Retin A. He has said everything you have said EXCEPT use only the Retin A at night and do not use any other products with it, including a moisturizer. I have always used Retin A (Micro cream 0,05 in my case) this way. Your opinion on not combining with other products especially moisturizer? Additionally, the two moisturizers you like are in containers that you must dip your fingers in. Easily to contaminate. Kind regards.

@@MrrrrMime hey I think you accidentally commented that under the wrong comment? :)
it's not next level for a person who speaks french though
Can you do a Day and Night routine showing what products you use please?Your skin is always flawless 💕
I started using tretinoin as a teen. It requires patience to see its effect on acne, but it's worth it!
What serum do you use if your skin gets dry from tret?
@@ayeishaj9281 I like the Ordinary amino acids + b5. A thin layer of cerave healing ointment over dry areas usually works (although it feels oily)
And thank u for sharing this nice topics with us
@@MissSissiMe I used multiple mineral sunblocks and unfortunately all of them leave white cast or oxizied even La Rochae sunblock 😔😔😔
I have sensitive skin and I love this sunscreen from La Roche Posay, Anthelios Ultra Fluid Face Lotion SPF 50+ :)
Red raspberry seed oil.
I think the consensus now is that chemical sunscreens are linked to cancer so I'd rather use a zinc one and look like a ghost/put makeup over it than have a greater risk of cancer.
I really appreciate you telling not put it in mouth area, that is the most thing that hindered me in using retinol
Oh I started using Retinol literarily yesterday. Good timing!
Thank you Dr. Shereene for such a wonderful and simple explanations of a major skincare routines and recommendations for the skincare products. It helps tremendously. I do have sensitive skin and made almost all mistakes you explained in your videos but I’m following your recommendations and my skin looks much better now 😄
Just in time! I’m a retinol user but had to search a beginner retinol for my sister-in-law!
As a long-time prescription retinoid user, this video was super helpful!
Are you still using it and if so how has your skin tolerated it?
I have rosacea aswell and retin a is currently blowing up my face
I'm so glad this dropped now since I had just requested an easy beginner guide for noobs like me about tackling skin routine and skincare in general!!
It would be wonderful if you could continue this as series about some of the acids/ vitamins etc that you have videos on!!
But truly as always, I come 60% for Shereen's energy and humor and 40% about actually learning about all skin-related stuff. (get your priorities straight guys)
Your hair is looking so healthy and happy ma sha Allah. Glad you managed to revive it ❤️
My goodness, your lips look GORGEOUS! That color is perfect on you! 💄💋
Thank you!
You are a true Godsend! I have had adverse reactions to Retinol in the past, so per your recommendation I am taking it really slow this time! Only once a week now, and I will gradually increase my usage! Thank you so much for all your advice!
Can you make a video about overhyped skincare products?
🎉Summary:
Retinol Ester -> Retinol -> Retinaldehyde (Retinal) -> Retinoic acid (tretinoin= prescription retin A)
👆Lowest to highest strength. Start with lowest always.
Less is more. Use a pea size amount.
Consistency over intensity.
Use at night. Most retinols are photolabile (unstable in the presence of light)
Use 2-3 times a week as a beginner for several weeks. Until the skin can tolerate then use regularly
If skin is sensitive,
-Don’t wash face before retinol or make sure skin is very dry.
-Don’t use exfoliate same night as retinol
-Use moisturiser before retinol to buffer the skin
-Cicaplast B5 baume to soothe skin
You can't just say "purge is a myth " and save it for "next time"😭😱
Red lip is beautiful on you! Would you share the brand and the name of the color, please .thank you for all your informed knowledge!
Been using 0.5% Tretinoin and I never had serious acne since. Highly recommend!
Please how do you it please??
I would love to see a video about teenage skincare. What to use and what to avoid ( products and ingredients) .
There is no difference between adult and teens, unless you are speaking of acne.
So glad you’re not calling us little Nerds it was unnecessary we love you!
Good morning! Thank you being part of my Saturdays ❤️

I was thinking of starting retinol 😃 just before this was posted
I always watch her videos and think: "wow, I love my dermatologist, she is competent and very clear in her explanations" ❤❤ The only problem is that I never stepped in her office. 🤣🤣
🤣😂😂😂
Could you do a video on how to get rid of broken capillaries and your thoughts on LED light therapy and in particular your thoughts on the LED “face masks”
Dr Dray had a video on it, the conclusion is more or less - only laser treatment at a derm's office can help that.
She talked about it a bit in the previous video. The giveaway video.
Yes!!! This!
my retinol is going to be delivered tomorrow, i appreciate all of the tips so much
You look like better version of Lady Gaga , and the lipstick looks so nice on you 🎀

My derm prescribed me Adapalene, and my skin has never been better, but i think my skin is “addicted” to it, because if i stop for 3-4 days my acne booms like babies in the 40s gurl.
😂
Such a specific example lol
Same here, must.not.run.out.of.my.Adapalene. I live in Belgium where it is only available on prescription by your derm and mine has a 9 month waiting list. Oh well :)

Same!! I'm using epiduo forte and without it my skin just doesn't wanna give me a good life lol
Can you talk about The Ordinary products ? What do you like, dislike, not use, to use, your opinion on the products.

Ooh, can you also do a video on which ingredients/products work best with retinol and which ones to avoid?
The red lipstick looks great! :)
PLEASE do a video about chemical peels and the benefits that they offer.
Wish I’d been more educated when I first started using tret 10 years ago- I was “more is more” type til I saw how much it aged me! Scared the hell out of me, took years to have courage to start again.
It aged you? It can cause wrinkles, you mean? Ai!
Thank you for educating us ♥
I love how you’re so informative and funny as hell at the same time!
I use a new q tip each time to scoop out product...works like a charm... no contamination!
Certainly! Here's the corrected version of your message:
Hello, dear Dr. Shereene Adriss. Thanks for your information ❤️
I'm 32 years old. I have a question: I recently bought retinol serum, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid for my skincare routine. However, I'm unsure about how to use them. Which one is more necessary to use, vitamin C or retinol?
How should they be used over the years?
Literally I’m praying for you doc. Thanks so much everything is illuminated about retinol in my head 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Just binge watched all your videos... learning so much from you, your explanations are detailed but always so easy to understand. Can't wait for more videos (especially on the myth of purging!!)
Please, make a video on skincare devices(red light, current tool, nuface, and more), is it worth saving money and buying them for a long term results, or is it not efficient enough and going to aesthetician who uses similar devices would be more effective (better tools) ?
Watching this even tho I've been on epiduo (adapalene +BP) for over 14 years lol. Knowledge is power! Thank you for making this :)
Queen Shereene!! ❤️❤️❤️ The retinol video drops right on time for me ! Also, you're looking BOMB with that red lip and fancy hair! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ You da beessttttt !!
How come nobody’s asked what brand of lipstick is that? Love the stunning color. Can you also tell what color you have on your hair? Its beeeautiful habibti! ♥️
Great video and you look amazing in the red lipstick! Can you please do a video on skincare for 20s, 30s, 40s, etc and on devices like NuFace? I’m wanting to try it but I have concerns about going at my face with electricity on a regular basis and any long term negative effects of that.
Would love to see a video about freckles! How to keep them while still evening out skin tone, other pigmentation etc. Thank you!
Thank you for talking about the neck and chest! I started 0.025% tret + clindamycin combo three weeks ago, and decided to use it on my neck (over a thick moisturizer) every ten nights. Seems to be OK so far! I've had a few zits pop up in the area but they haven't been the inflamed variety.
Heads up! Differin is prescription in the uk so if you’re looking for it and can’t find it over the counter in your country that might be why.
This literally feels like a university lecture! In what age can we start using retinol? Keep it up, lots of love!
Hi not a professional, but I was prescribed Tazaortene when I was 17 for acne and hyperpigmentation. I have been using it for five years now with no problems, and from my research you can safely start retinol use in your teenage years
No, it really doesn’t feel like a university lecture. Kindly spare us the fawning BS.

Thanks Dr Idriss. I've just bought a lot of your recommended products. I'm going to start with the A313 cream in the "sandwich" method, but the pharmacist recommended me to start after the summer and not to use it in the summer months?🤔. Thanks ever so much for all this wonderful information. You are an amazing Dr.
Such a great breakdown, and I really appreciate the time stamps! Currently using a 0.2% Retinol and considered stepping it up, excellent timing 💕
Can i ask at what age u started using?? And so u have sensitive skin?

I'd love to see a video regarding moisturizer recommendations for cell turnover, pigmentation, oily skin, etc... :)
I am 56. I tried Tretinoin for an entire year. Every three nights then two then every night for the first couple months. Moisturizer before, moisturizer after... before AND after. My skin was ALWAYS red and flakey. Thank goodness I had nowhere to go thanks to the Rona. About 2 weeks ago I gave up. Not going back. I wish everyone who tries to use it all the luck in the world!
you should try it again but stick to a lower % and only use once or twice PER week if your skin couldn't handle it before. my skin never used to like tret but since the beginning of this year i no longer get irritation from it.
I am currently consulting with another dermatologist. She is recommending hydration before acne treatment. Your video is giving me more insight
