    As always Stewart, great info. I’m already ready to step up from my first drone, the Mini, and have been doing my homework as to what I should go to. Since I am new to droning as well as the photography/videography aspects, much of what you talk about goes over my head LOL but I’m working on it and about half through your tutorial I purchased.

    From southern California, USA. Mr. Carroll, love your presentations; I've seen most of them. Thank you very much. I went from a 4/3 sensor camera to a full frame sensor camera. The improvement was amazing (noise reduction, cooler pixels, better highlights and shadows, etc.). For the same reasons, I'd select the Mavic 2 Pro over the zoom any day. Lesson learned.

      The used prices are so cheap here, that I have purchased both, and also the Mavic Mini, all 3 for about $2800 USD.
      Now I can experiment , back and forth, and the batteries are interchangeable. June ,2020.

    Thanks for the video. I purchased the M2P mostly because of it’s ability to shoot higher quality photos. I am not a professional, but I do have the potential of shooting an excellent photo. Since a drone can get perspectives you cannot obtain with a regular camera and there is the increased possibility of getting a “once in a lifetime “ photo with a drone, the M2P is the better of the two drones for that purpose. As others have mentioned, most videos are viewed in a format that does not take full advantage of the potential video quality, but with the M2P, an amateur photographer can take an outstanding photo, send it to a quality lab, and hang it on the wall for permanent view, give as a gift, or perhaps sell. While it is primarily the photographer not the camera, there is more chance of getting this type of photo with a larger sensor than the smaller one in the M2Z.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +2

      Totally agree. The funny thing is, the better the camera, the worse a photographer/videographer you can be. On a DSLR/mirrorless shooting RAW photos, you can make all manner of mistakes with your exposure but still fix it in Lightroom. Sure, the video of all the drones might look similar on YT but that's not test. It's the ability to work with colours in post that matters, if you are at that stage. It's not essential but it's nice to have the option at least.

    I am upgrading from a phantom 2 vision plus so like you said, both the Mavic 2 pro and Mavic 2 zoom are excellent drones but at the end of the day I just want great video without having issues with my older IMac struggling to process the footage from the Mavic 2 pro.
    I pickup my zoom today.

  • @lwdcourt
    @lwdcourt 5 лет назад +8

    Slightly confused! You say that arguably the narrow view on the pro can enable you to get a better image when you zoom in on post... however, I think that misses the point of the mavic zoom. On the zoom, to get closer you just need to turn the zoom switch and you can do that quickly and easily. On the pro if you're filming at the widest view then to get to the narrow view you have to stop filming, change settings in order to restart filming at the narrow view (in order to then get the advantage you discuss). Am I missing something here?

    I don’t agree with cropping in when switch HOV on the Pro as being the same as having the 2x optical and 4 x lossless zoom which is on the Mavic 2 zoom. Yes you can do zoom and dolly zoom in post buts it’s not the same when doing it while flying out in the field from your bird. I got a really cool shot today of some alligator basking in the sun here in florida without disturbing them from a distance by zooming in on them, they didn’t even know I was there. I couldn’t have done that with my previous DJI drones they would take of running in the lake because I got to close. I believe the Pro has its purpose with is more for photography and the zoom a more flexible creative type drone.

      Simon F B I am saying it’s different being able to do it right there in the moment instead of waiting to go and do it when you get home or to the office etc. for me dolly zoom is not the main reason I bought the Mavic 2 zoom. But it’s being able to get close to those alligators Baskin in the sun with out disturbing them, and it was very exciting and adventure filling to do that haven’t felt that way in a long time when flying a drone. It makes me what to go out and fly more. I am very pleased with my purchase!

      I just do not like that 1/2.3 sensor. I hope they give us an option later on for a 1 inch sensor with optical zoom - that would be awesome. The best zoom lens I ever used was the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 for Canon mount, but that was a beast as far as weight was concerned. I am sure we will see some incredible things to come from Hasselblad / DJI in the next iteration.

    • @mr02gixxer1000
      @mr02gixxer1000 5 лет назад +3

      Jack Bisson I understand everyone has there preferences nothing wrong with that at all. DJI could have made 1 Mavic 2 with 1inch sensor and optical zoom!! But you know its about the $$$, because according to them they have a program coming up where you buy either camera from them and they swap it for you and send your Mavic 2 back to you with its original camera so the end results is you end up with two cameras. There is two guys on RUclips who swap out these cameras and everything works as they supposed to, so it can be done in less than 5min with a screwdriver.
      My take away from flying my zoom for 2weeks now is that it’s amazing!! To be able to have optical zoom on a drone!! It’s just fun and it really changes the way one can use there drone.

    Good comparison. I have just downloaded some sample 10 bit D-Log footage from Mauro's Films. I used DaVinci Resolve 15 (free!) and applied Mauro's free cinematic LUT and a couple of other tweaks and it looks good and rendered quickly. This is on W10, i7 Skylake @ 4.4GHz, GeForce 1080 and 16GB RAM. You are correct that software like this takes time to learn but it is free, works with proxy files if required and will allow grading and editing of the MP2 Pro footage. I believe it will also correct barrel distortion. I'm a hobbyist with a Mavic Pro and find it hard to justify an upgrade at the moment but, for sure, the Pro would be my chosen drone, especially as I like taking photos as well. I am waiting a bit to see what 'missing' features DJI add back in with firmware updates.

    Awesome video as usual!!! My only caveat would be that digital zoom and mechanical zoom are not the same? I wouldn't think that you'd get the same parallax effect with the digital zoom of the Pro 2 in comparison to the mechanical zoom lens of the Zoom version because there is no compression with digital magnification.

    "Fullness of time"? You're being kind. I think we're a bit tired of the dolly zoom already! The trick is to use the effect sparingly and for dramatic purpose. In any case I'm more interested to see if focus can be held on a zoomed in point of interest with a soft background.

I am now testing in Dlog-M to try to protect the highlights. This is the best drone I have flown to date and I have flown the P4P and I2. The Mavice 2 Pro HQ 4k is awesome!

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад

      Glad you're enjoying it! Absolutely, with photos, because the noise doesn't move, you can get away with a lot more of it and do a little clean up in Lightroom or such like. Noise reduction is harder for video so having a camera like the M2P's is great.

    Great video! I have a question, though: at 5:51, your 3-way comparison shows the middle example (Mavic 2 Pro Dlog-M) being VERY blurry compared to the top and bottom examples. I've noticed blurriness in my own M2P photos, and I'm wondering if this is something you've noticed, and if so, is there a way to fix this (I'm running +1 sharpness and it's still evident). Thanks in advance!

    • @DroneFilmGuide

      Hey Craig! If you haven't seen it, we did a second video on best settings for the M2P and we talk about the sharpness issue.

    • @craigeastwood9941
      @craigeastwood9941 5 лет назад

      Saw it and it was very helpful. Seems as though the sweet spot for the aperture on the M2P is 4 or so - anything at either end of the aperture range is going to get blurry.

    Thanks Stewart, I was hoping you would put up a video on this subject since I was torn between just keeping my old MP and the new MP2. I am still struggling with turning a bland D-log video into a nice full color video. I will have to review your tutorials. Any chance you can put up a new one for this MP2, can I simply use LUTs to bring back the colors? I know you are busy so I will keep my hopes down a bit. I will have to sit down and learn FCP a lot more I guess. For me, the things that are putting me over the edge into keeping the new MP2 is signal strength, sensors, and knowing I can squeeze out a better picture in post. You can tell DJI that I am keeping the new MP2 after watching your review. 😉 Thanks again Stewart!

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +1

      Hey John! We'll need to put up a video to show some easy colour corrections/grading for DLog-M. In a nutshell, add loads of contrast and saturation! Hang in there with the M2P. You'll get great results with it. That being said, if you're struggling with the colours, use Normal mode in H.264. It's still a great picture so although you won't be taking full advantage of the 10-bit colour, you can get to that once you've had more time to figure out how to make it work for you.

    As he said it really depends ur needs. normally the zoom would have been the better drone for me as my time doesnt give me too much space for post production work. And the zoom looks better in normal mode about colours and sharpenss without editing out of the box then the Pro. Just sadly i have an event company and also need to do some lowlight stuff of our lighting gear and hear the zoom just cant handle it. So i have to go with the pro even i would prefer for 80% of the work the zoom but the 20% left that are really important to me just cant be dont by the zoom. and to buy both makes no sense. i just will check camera swap options.

    In the Mavic 2 Pro, can you switch between the wide and narrow FOV without interrupting the video? If yes, then the claim that you get two focal lengths that approximate the two ends of the Mavic 2 Zoom's lens is true. If not, then there is no equivalence whatsoever.
    So, can you switch while filming?

      Hey! It was The Film Poets guy who found out about the +1 sharpness thing for the original Mavic Pro so maybe he'll find something for the M2P also. Personally, I find DLog-M (0,0,0) a very workable picture format. The picture is a little soft because it doesn't have the digital sharpening we are used to seeing but it's better because of that in my opinion. So far I haven't felt the need to play with sharpness, contrast or saturation.

      @@DroneFilmGuide Thanks for the elaborate answer. I'm using it for travel vlogs, to either get some great scenery in there of to film myself in the car as I'm driving some gorgeous road. The ability to keep up to 70kph is one of the aspects that wants me to trade up from the old mavic pro. But it will be mixed with GoPro and Sony AX53 camcorder footage. So, that might be a bit of a concern, as I'm also working on a 2015 macbook pro on the road. At home I have a 10-core iMac Pro monster that should be able to handle H265 fluently.
      I might do a few videos with drone-only footage. But I guess if it is too much of a hassle, I can always use "normal" for the vlogs worst case scenario...

    When the pro zooms in 'HQ' mode, it's cropping the sensor. Does this crop produce the same optical result in the difference of depth, like an actual optical zoom? I don't think it does, but I'm not quite sure. Also, a guy did a test and said the pro pixel bins and skips lines when filming in 4k which was super depressing to hear. This results in the pro being MUCH less sharp than it's phantom 4 counterpart and equally as sharp/soft as the mavic zoom.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +1

      Hey! Yes, the crop does produce the same result as an optical zoom. The level of compression is the same. As for the quality difference between Full FOV and HQ, we can't tell the difference. If anything there is more noise in the HQ FOV!

      I'd say the Pro. If you're doing indoors then you will probably benefit from the better low light performance of the Pro. Plus for photography the Pro gives you a 20mp image. Field of view is a bit tighter but if you need a wider angle you can take more than one photo and stitch them together in Lightroom.

      That's a new one for me. We don't have the Zoom anymore so I can't double check but I'm 99.9% sure there is no difference between the two in terms of the focusing options. Maybe people are talking about a disparity in performance? Either way, I wouldn't have noticed because we never use continuous autofocus because if the focus changes during your shot then it could spoil your shot.

    • @EtheriumSky

      @@DroneFilmGuide But what about then if you start in a close up shot of your subject, then fly out to extra wide? Everything would go blurry if your foxus doesnt shift? Or simply if you follow a subject, wouldnt ot become impossible to keep it sharp?
      Maybe these are irrelevant questions, this will be my first drone but im just darn conflicted on which one to choose heh. You make the most solid case for the pro, and another friend similarly is all for the zoom.
      I work in this field professionally too, so having DLog would be such a huge advantage - but optical zoom vs. actually cropping the image is also just bound to look better...

    • @airindiana
      @airindiana 3 года назад +1

      Is this in dlog? I’ve never shot dlog on a drone as new to drones (ordered a mavic 2 pro). But on the zcam for instance shooting in log, under exposing at all is a big no no. Log curves tend to retain comparatively more highlight detail than shadows. There’s a saying that floats around when it comes to log called “ETTR” or expose to the right. (A term that comes from histograms). You tend to over expose by 2-3 stops (without massively clipping the highlights of course). When you bring the highlights down the info is still there. But you have to be so careful not to blow out the highlights which is very hard without any waveform monitoring . But if you underexpose when you come to bring the shadows up you’ll have lots of noise. Log is really prone to noise in shadows if underexposed. Not sure if same using dlog. Just a thought? There’s articles on log and exposure online. I really don’t know if dlog is similar as other log profiles in this regard but worth looking at?
