    I do have to admit that your vids of the M2P are more pleasing to the eye than others I have seen. It is warmer than the M2Z if you like that, I do not. I think the M2Z shows the real shades better. I don't think I'd be happy if every time I flew I would have to reset settings to get a true picture. I think the M2P is for people that spend more time in the edit room than out flying and filming, which is fine if that's what you are into. The M2Z has been a surprisingly "right out of the box" perfect drone/camera for me. I edit nothing and save all my vids. Along with the Zoom feature which is totally AWESOME, this has got to be the best in my opinion. But remember: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    Well you just convinced me that zoom isn't bad deal at all considering the optical zoom. For RUclips and similar applications the nuances that the pro has as advantage are negligible and the adjustable aperture seems to be the only thing that makes sense over the zoom

    • @SeanOzz
      @SeanOzz 6 лет назад +3

      Dr One DrOne yep. You nailed it. If what’s being made is for Facebook or RUclips or social media of any kind due to the very slight differences between them. Then the zoom is just fine and has benefits due to the zoom itself.

      One more thing I've just learned from one of the content makers today. The new codec H265 is so processor intense that his 2015 MacBook pro has issues even with playback, let alone editing and coloring. A quick check on the market showed that at least another $1000 should be spent on having a Win laptop that can cope with the task of managing the files... If Mac it's 3500-4000.

      Dr One DrOne I agree both drones can shoot is H265 and in order to play back in this format you are going to need really powerful machines to edit or do play backs. My MacBook Pro 2017 model get a really good workout processing the playing back the H265 video from my Mavic Zoom.

    Great video! and that lightning @6:12.
    The Mavic 2 Pro's big benefit is 10bit which is only available in h.265 dlog-m or hlg and needs color grading. Then the zooms big benefit is the 2x optical 24->48mm zoom which beats out the Pros HQ 55° *39mm* .
    I have yet to see a showdown style of h.265 profile comparisons (h.264 vs h.265 normal vs dlogm vs hlg) then basic editing tutorial. Then compare that to the BEST shots you can get with the Mavic 2 Zoom. (My goal is to figure out dlog-m or hlg one day) XD. *might need to wait for the dlogm/hlg barrel distortion firmware fix.

    • @Ben-rz9cf
      @Ben-rz9cf 5 лет назад +4

      Really the pro has these milky blacks and MUCH better colors. But in terms of color accuracy, the zoom is not bad, it is just the sort of missing these subtle colors and more dynamic range in the shadows that makes the pro look amazing by comparison. Honestly i don't think i would have anything to complain about with the zoom if it wasn't side by side with the pro, but you can see the difference it makes--and really, i think most of that is less about the larger sensor and more about the 10 bit color. If you drop the contrast settings down on the zoom and shoot in D-cinelike, i think you can still get a bit more dynamic range to work with, it just lacks all of that high frequency color information.

  • @MrKuba105000
    @MrKuba105000 6 лет назад +11

    To be honest, I don't understand why you performed the comparison like this. In the Zoom you can set any focal length, so the best way would be matching FOV to the Pro's current mode. Also, I would buy Zoom to shoot at 48mm most of the time, because it's its biggest advantage. And you only show wide angle...
    As I wrote under your previous video, the most valuable comparison you can make of these drones, is to compare Pro's HQ mode and Zoom's 48mm.

    Thanks for the comparison. I'd like to just clarify something about the Depth of field, using a depth of field calculator you can see that on a full frame sensor like the 5d mk2 or a7sii shooting at 28mm at f2.8, if the subject is at 10meters (32feet) or more everything will be in focus beyond this point (there won't be any blurry background). And in the Mavics with that tiny sensor the hyperfocal distance is even closer, so probably if the subject is at 3meters (10ft.) again everything will be in focus, so we can't really talk about any shallow depth of field. Link to the depth of field calculator I used www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev 6 лет назад

      True, but you gotta be really close to the subject, if the building is more than 20ft away from the drone, everything will be in focus (no shallow depth of field)

    • @CodyCha
      @CodyCha 5 лет назад

      The depth of field of f2.8 on an 1” sensor (Mavic 2 Pro) is equivalent to f7.5 on a full frame sensor. You’re not going to much of shallow DOF on Mavic especially at 28mm, which is pretty wide.

  • @FloridaLife
    @FloridaLife 5 лет назад

    The Mavics down sampling algorithm is crap (that's what makes the P4P footage so much better by comparison... The algorithm). And there is an big difference in quality between full FOV and HQ, since no down sampling is done (the crop is a 1:1 pixel ratio to 4K). Using water footage is a perfect way to show the quality difference between the Pro and Zoom. If you can't see the fairly substantial difference, or don't need it, then you may as well choose the Zoom. But if you are into color grading and do Post, then you can get the zoom and dolly zoom effects, with higher quality output, with the Pro. Cheers!

  • @steves6767

    Thanks Brett, but here’s a question you may not get asked often. Consider a use where “art” is not a factor and the user is looking only for the “best” individual frame/image quality when digitally zoomed in to a very high degree post-production. Of course “best” is still a balance between actual resolution, bit rate, frame rate (particularly for moving objects), light gathering/sensitivity etc.
    For example, let’s assume you want to read the lettering on the side of a truck at 500 yards in early morning or late evening so light but not bright, and potentially shadows. From the same distance out, does the 2x Zoom more than outweigh the advantages of the Pro even in cropped view mode if my only interest is image clarity?

    I feel like the Zoom is the one i need, to me the difference between the respective FOVs: Pro FullFOV and Zoom 4K is not that huge, it sounds like basically the same. Also, i'm shooting with my GH4 which has CINELIKE-D profile and only the Zoom will give me that option, so my choice is more clear now.
    A bit silly for me to compare the NORMAL profile on both aicrafts with everything in AUTO mode lol You should definitely use at least D-LOG M and even CINELIKE-D profile in order to really see what details actually the cameras is capable to bring back or not!

    The ability to adjust the aperture is a clear winner and the pro crushes it in low light. Super obvious in your test too. The M2Pro with an ND8 will allow you to shoot mid day at 30fps with ISO-100, 1/60 shutter and you can play with the aperture from f2.8 to about f8 to achieve perfect exposure. Also, shooting 24fps will only look "cinematic" if its edited, and exported at 24fps and played back at on a 24 fps projector. Since we're all watching youtube on tv's, monitors and mobil devices, (which all favor 30fps delivery) 24fps is just humorous to me. This is why for youtube, FB, Instagram, Vimeo, etc., 24fps is never going to be as buttery as 30 fps. Basically, when a block-buster movie is filmed, they shoot at 24fps knowing that it will be played back on a 24fps projector to a silver screen... in a theater. Fun-Fact: Movies that are created strictly for TV consumption like Netflix, Prime etc shoot at 30fps and... AND... more and more modern theaters are now projecting at 30fps so... stick to 30fps buster! #SoapBox LOVE YOUR CONTENT!

    • @bryanauer
      @bryanauer 5 лет назад

      Brett Garamella Exactly. Doubling the shutter speed over your respective frame rate has more to do with looking cinematic than frame rate itself. But even guys like Peter McKinnon edit and render out and then upload to RUclips at 24 frames per second thinking it’s going to look more cinematic when really it’s more problematic. Keeping everything in a 30 frame per second timeline is ideal and if you do that you can’t shoot at 24 frames per second because you will be missing frames every second LOL RUclips and any other electronic device for that matter is going to deliver it at Frame rates that are multiples of 30 FPS so you may as well play along :-) I promise in the future I will not bore you with this soapbox of mine and I intend to come back often because I really do like your approach. I also think your transitions back into the studio with your green screen is so bad ass I have never seen anybody do that before. Super creative

  • @mikew7538

    I'm trying to decide between these two drones right now. I've read/seen a lot of ppl who say that the HQ mode on the mavic 2 pro is 'good enough' in comparison to the 48mm optical zoom of the mavic 2 zoom. But a cropped digital zoom is not comparable to an optical zoom correct? For example in a shot where you are orbiting the subject, if you shot at 48mm on the 2 zoom vs HQ mode on the 2 pro, the parallax effect would still be much more pronounced on the zoom correct? I feel like having the versatility of the zoom would be more useful than the features on the pro...

    So ..... go with the Hasablad or the Zoom ? I want the dolly zoom and to incorporate the zoom in or out effects paired with my other freehand skills. However, the Hasablad seems to be a beautiful lil camera with great dynamic range and rich warm open shadows and epic detail. Could always go the zooming effects in post , no ? Does it look the same? Does a dolly zoom in post look like the real thing ??? Thanks for the video and chance to have a look !

    Great job! One thought I've had and am curious about, if possible, is in low light and ample lighting how the two compare in clarity when zooming in on an image later on at the computer where the two are looking at the same object in the same light at the same distance and all, but with Zoom zoomed in optically. Not sure I've explained this well, but seems to me it would be interesting to see which would have better clarity?

    I had a question from a photography point of view. The Pro shoots at 20MP to a 1 inch sensor, the Zoom shots 12MP to a 1/2.3 sensor but can do an optical zoom. If the two drones are side by side and I take a photo of a deer or other wildlife, which will come out with higher quality when cropped to be the same image? The zoom at 48mm with less MP on a smaller sensor or the Pro at 24mm with its larger size and 20MP sensor. Once cropped in to be the same image you suffer the loss of digitally zooming the image with the pro but I don't know if the 2x zoom on the lesser censor will be enough to beet the sheer quality of the pro censor. Id love to see a side by side full res images to see which would work better from a wildlife/portrait point of view. Obviously these are both INTENDED for landscapes so this is outside the realm of their normal use but Id love to know from the perspective of someone who has both and can tell me from experience instead of just theory craft.

      An inspire is deff on my goal list, Ive just been trying to convince myself to settle for less to get flying now but Its hard with the cost to justify buying something I want to eventually replace. The portability of the mavic 2s give them a leg in the fight. Unfortunatly the 12MP on the Mavic 2 Zoom's camera is a tough bit to swallow when its still over a grand. That's why I was curious if the Mavic 2 pro could render a better result with its 20MP and a larger sensor even though you have to digital zoom it. Either way its 1/4 what you would spend on an inspire. I will probably just keep saving and dreaming for now. The Phantom 5 is likely on the horizon and might be a better bridge drone until I can justify an inspire. Thanks for your feedback!

A comparison image quality between super high res (48 megapixeles) in M2Z versus quality image of M2P (20 Megapixeles). I am a landscape photographer and use to take very few but special images. Have you already done this comparison?

    Great review. Question for you. I am a real estate photographer and am struggling with the choice between them. The 1” sensor is appealing but so is the option of the zoom. Wouldn’t the super high photo res mode negate the benefit of the 1” sensor for still photos of houses? Also which in your opinion would need less post production for the video?

    Haselbad: still waiting for its performance as it comes to shoot in dark areas. My wish so far because of its 1".
    Pro: I did not know the zoom did not feature the setting of thee aperture... My bad! So, this is a must have.
    Its con: the narrower angle. If shot it 4K, i can always crop/zoom, but I think in most aerial scenery, the wider it is, the more emothion it brings.
    Being way more a videographer than a photographer, I heard around that the MZ would be by far enough satisfying.
    The "real' (optical) zoom was also enjoyable as to restitute a more realistic, more dynamic sensation of movement, making subjects actually look in motion at a higher speed, than with the former MP. Today's video of yours clearly emphasizes this.
    Yet, I don't feel as much ready for this one.
    To put it in a nutshell: the absence of 4k60pfs on the MP2 being an intentional limitation to give some spare space to the next Phantom, I feel the same way about the MZ. It is more or less a flanged(restrained) version of the best one currently: the MP2.
    So, given an alternative, people rather go with the athlete rather than the crippled, right? (sorry DJI!)

      Here, portability is now becoming the key factor.
      Since this July, the new law is being enforced.
      Apart from the other many restrictions you obviously do not have (like: flyiong over habitated aeras, like these streets, seashore, and always minimum 50m away from any person etc etc etc), now every UAV above 800g of weight cannot be flown unless equipped with all sorts of tricks, and you have to pass an exam to be a licenced drone pilot (even not commercial).
      Reason why the astonishing Evo by AUTEL (reminder: 4k60fps!) will never be sold here.
      As for the MP2/Zoom, there will be a lot of troubles as well as soon as it will be bought, because it is slightly above this weight.
      I remember when I was still flying (uh... learning...training?) my prop-dinosaures, 2016-2017, like phantom2, CX, Syma etc..: It was long to prepare for before any actual shot, there were always tech troubles, I always had to carry supplies, so... yes! I remember the revolution that the Mavic has been.
      Today, with its successors, step by step, this only a matter of evolution.
      So you are being of big help for us to make up our minds!
      We owe you.
      For those who don't earn their lives with this yet, it is still an investment and certain amount of money that not everyone would afford.
      Keep on guiding us, please!

    Its better to capture more detail and sharpness in-camera first. Softening is a DESTRUCTIVE process. Once you kill detail in-camera, it can never be recovered in post. However, if you do a +1 sharpness, you get more detail, less noise reduction "waxy" artifacts in your file. Its very VERY easy to soften your image if you want in post editing. This way, you dont destroy the resolution and detail, you bring it home and soften it more precisely there. This is a non-destructive approach.

    • @clifftotten7609
      @clifftotten7609 6 лет назад

      One of the problems about Ambarella processors is that they use a very heavy handed temproal noise reduction. It's not just a bad algorithm, it's bad algorythm that is applied way too heavily. The Ambarella A9 was disgusting. It applied severe amounts or noise reduction progressively worse the further down you went from middle grey. It's mult filter reset every 12 frames (about) and cause the worst flickering of pixel clusters. Lowering the sharpness added more reduction and raising the sharpness pulled that circuit back. Yes, the Ambarella H1 and H2 are much better processors, even on the 1/2.3 sensors. However, I still hold that Ambarella sharpness reduction is still crude. The options you have for guassian blurs and other softening tricks are for more accurate and "surgical" in post tools like DeVinci or Premiere. Even post noise reduction is 10 times more accurate using noise prints and extensive frequency and temporal tools. It FAR exceeds Ambarella's real time in camera noise processing. Noise reduction is not our friend. In high end productions that I have worked on, we shoot 12bit raw with no sharpening, no softening, no noise reduction and no color LUTS applied. Just 12 raw RGGB sensor data. The best thing a colorist could ask for. The idea is to have the very most image to work with in post as you possible can because those tools are accurate. In camera processing is not and it's not reversible. I do agree with you for people that want a WYSIWYG workflow. Not everybody wants to do post work. Check this video out that clearly displays the Ambarella A9's disgusting noise temporal reduction. ruclips.net/video/5WDc9PKCDm0/видео.htmlm58s

      @@brettgaramella Don't do it!!!! I'd say go for the mavic pro 1 instead. Lack of occusync is a HUGE downside and it ended up costing me my drone, went down over the water at only 500 feet away due to lack of signal. No clue why it didn't return to home, but buying a mavic air is a very expensive mistake. I am only curious if the camera in the mavic zoom is basically the same as the mavic air only with optical zoom.
      Side note, at 5:33 you can really tell just what a difference 10 bit color makes! Look at how the zoom just throws away all that subtlety and replaces it with just a muddy reddish color. The pro really captures all of the reflections of the sunset accurately.

    • @ElevatedViews
      @ElevatedViews 6 лет назад

      I suppose. But it's a tool... And as such, if I am going to do work with it I plan accordingly. For example, if I was going to be shooting anything that had to do with a movie, I wouldn't be using a mavic. i would use the Inspire 1/2 or even something heartier. The P4P would be for B-roll or a backup. If it's windy outside, I would not opt for the Mavic at all... It's just not as stable. Yes, I have seen videos with the mavic being used in heavier winds but it's not by any means confidence building!
      It has it's place I suppose... but again, I wouldn't be dropping my P4P for that. Maybe if I was going to the beach or traveling somewhere but meh... =)

      Brett Garamella I have been experimenting with the Osmo + to try out DJI’s technology. With the Osmo + having to deal with it’s limitations, but I have found that daylight running ND 16 and even ND 32 keeps me in shutter priority at 1/50th my iso 180-400 most times. If I picked the wrong ND filter and I’m still over exposing increasing shutter speed a little say to 1/80th or even 1/100th and I move steady then I don’t see the stuttering much, but I keep the shot from being blown out. With the drones I expect you could if you had to easily run the shutter a lot higher since most of the time what is on the screen isn’t moving that fast unless you are close to the subject. Have you found the Mavic 2 Pro having a sweet spot for aperture? Like most lenses about 2 stops from wide open?
