That was a good, clear, understandable opinion. I appreciate the points you made. I purchased the zoom myself and I’m loving how versatile it is proving to be. The other day while using it, I was able to hover and film a Red Tail hawk while this beauty was perched in a tree, and zoom right in without scaring him off!! That alone to me, was a validation that I picked the right version (in my opinion).

Definately, zoom is still versatile, you can get more footage at sky, and tell your story, the dynamic range also still work really good.
I would say the Zoom is more bang for buck because the camera on both is very good but the Zoom has the smooth digital zoom.
I'd like to see more about that container home being built. Very cool.

yesterday i bought the zoom, absolutely no regrets, Mavic 2 zoom + 2 batteries = the price asked for the PRO 2
I’m late but you could’ve went with a factory refurbished pro 2 for cheaper than the pro. No charges on the battery. It’s basically brand new expect they can’t market it as new

Dave Haughs , there's some people on RUclips who are swapping the cameras in just a few minutes. I think if the camera become cheap enough it would be worth it to own both cameras and one drone.

Thank you for addressing the extra tools the Zoom gives you! I've done a lot of action videos and being able to fill the frame while keeping a safe distance from my subject is a huge benefit.

These cameras aren't really comparable or "which one is best for you" - because we need both in one. Pro cinematic 1" custom aperture hasselblad camera w/ optical zoom

A zoom lens with adjustable aperture for a 1'' sensor would be a lot bigger and heavier. So the drone would need more powerful motors and larger batteries. It would be in a completely different price range and weight class.
I like the Zoom over the mavic 2 I love doing nature shots and I don't want to have to be right on top of it and plus I am not a professional it all looks good to me
Im debating on wich one to get. I want to do a lot of nature shots. So would you suggest zoom? For example take video of blue herons nesting. Being we have to keep our distance, wouldnt the zoom be a better way to go?

your video quality is freaking insane. 30 fps is SOOOO much better than all these fools filming online content at 24 fps.
I would say the Zoom is more bang for buck because the camera on both is very good but the Zoom has the smooth digital zoom.

I do not know about that. I am doing some things with the Pro that I do not think I could do with the zoom.
There is a big difference between the HQ 4K (40mm eqv) and 4K FOV (28mm eqv). With these two views you can tell a story as well and the Low Light is awesome.
Jack Bisson I see what you are saying, But it’s just not the same!! Trust me! The zoom is what it is. And the pro doesn’t have the ability to zoom like its brother aka zoom!

I would love a zoom in a 1 inch sensor, maybe the Phantom 5 will have it. You are right though there are times that a zoom cannot be beat. I just love my Mavic 2 Pro and what I can create it with. Not sure the zoom would let me do what I am doing in low light.
It is all about the money , DJI SHOULD HAVE DONE ONE DRONE WITH A CHANGEABLE HEAD . ONE COAST FOR ONE DRONE . BUT THE NOISE FOR ME IS A BIG FACTER . AS I HAVE HORSES

Well, with the Pro version you can have cropped 4K version which has a narrower field of view having it at about 48. So you have the closer look right there. Of course, you can´t do the zoom but you could in post. For me, to be honest, it´s a no-brainer. Pro 100%. I am sure that whoever shoot at sunset or past sunset would run to buy the Pro. The Zoom, the Mavic 1 and the Air falls apart at night. Only the Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro can do some interesting shots at sunset, low light, night scenes. Again, for me, it´s a no-brainer.
I've found the Zoom to only come short in really low light scenes. Also found it's superior to the MP1 and of course the Air. When it's really dark yeah the PRO jumps ahead but that's not to say it's excellent, because it's not and even the P4P which I've found better than the M2Pro overall (in regards to image of course) is acceptable for dark, deep night shots and captures. The Zoom IMHO it's kinda good at dusk and dawn, especially for photography as long as you stay at 24mm and shoot in manual. I've taken some really good shots with the old MP1 ("old", mind that.. .LOL) in the past at sunsets and sunrises, needing only minor post touches to become technically good. Of course the superior aperture and the 1"sensor of the PRO makes for better contrast and light capture in most situations, and more flexible editing too. I just didn't like the cropped video and photo of the PRO, (and even less of the Zoom but somehow its more crisp than the Pro's and we have the zoom if needed). Even at 20MP I prefer the Zoom's High Res at 48MP (photo) which is absolutely insane, poster-like image.
I have Mavic Mini. It's fun. Been flying only 2 months. I am looking at the zoom because of the camera.

Now in 2022, and with around 500 flights on the Zoom, it is and always will be my "go to" drone. I have the Air 2 but I like the "feel" of the larger, heavier and more stable Zoom when flying distances. Plus being a non professional, the flexibility of the Zoom feature is much more important to me than the slightly better camera in the Pro. A serious drone pilot buddy of mine (who is also a commercial pilot) sold his Pro and kept his Zoom for it's more usefulness overall. AND he does lots of video editing and posting too)
From a safety point of view, when flying over trees and power poles, being able to fly higher and zoom in gives the feeling of flying at treetop level without the inherent risk. Only downside is the fact that DJI has abandoned the drone in favour of selling more expensive and advanced drone, so if you feel as I do, stock up on batteries as their availability in the future will limit the future usefulness of the drone.
I have 8 batteries now. These batteries have a known life of five years / 500 recharges, so if you are flying often, that will be your ultimate limitation going forward.
But overall...."long live the Zoom"....

My sense is the Pro is for those who need more flexibility with light conditions (low light) and who like post processing. The 2x zoom of the Zoom, in my mind, can be more than matched with using the "Ken Burns" effect and the greater number of pixels on the Pro. Often in post processing, you can also rethink how you want pan and zoom and crop after the fact. With the Zoom, you need to live with how the shot was captured.

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to share this. Question: With the zoom, if you were say 20 feet away from your object and you zoomed in fully, would you be able to see detail on something say the size of a quarter? (later on with digital zoom on software)?

I definitely prefer the quality of the 2 pro rather than the poorer picture from the zoom

Was in Joshua Tree just last week drove through Yucca Valley also. Wish I already had the Mavic 2 Pro when I was there as the desert was in full bloom and the colors were absolutely amazing.
The desert is so alive right now!

A very nice comparison. I think the zoom is better because of its advantage to zoom, a footage can be edited a million ways to make it be how a shooter needs, color issues depend on the settings now, i think i am going for the zoom by 2020..!!

Really great comparison! I am looking for upgrading my DJI Spark and is seriously considering the Zoom! When filming in the mountains and rocker climbers it would be super awesome to do this from a distance. Now I have to fly very close. My only second thought is the weight as I am climbing myself and have to keep the drone in my backpack.
Just to follow up! I decided for the Zoom and had it with be to Cogne in Italy for ice climbing a couple of weeks back. Footage looks stunning, and the drone is just super for mountain scenery and to get close to climbers! 😄

Seems like they'd have a base platform to buy and you could outfit it with a wide selection of cameras of your choice with super simple swaps in the field. A pilot could arm himself with 5 batteries and 5 cameras, select the right camera for his purpose. They could charge less for the platform and a healthy price for each camera. Having NEVER flown a drone before and doing a little research on DJI's products, this seems obvious to me but I'm hoping some of you can tell me why it's not reality, not feasible, or maybe not even possible. My iPhone can video chat with people overseas with the touch of a button, there's no way my suggestion isn't possible, right?

I think the zoom has the cool perspective advantage because of how “close” you can appear to be, perhaps my eyes suck but i personally can’t tell the difference between 1080p and 4k since I watch most drone footage videos from either a tablet or cell phone.
That’s because it’s a 4k optical zoom. None of this footage is 1080p

Yes, very well explained and I was extremely doubtful about the zoom, as I have here a pro from a friend who let me use it for 2 weeks solid...;-), but now for what I need to do - I live 6/8 months a year in South Pacific Costa Rica, Pavones, where I want to film daily the surfers and the wild life - I'm definitely going for the Zoom! Hi Jeven I am a serious amateur photographer and only interested on images. Once both mavics were launched I thought that my option was "no brainer" with mavic 2 Pro but after seeing a lot of video comparisons and the fact that M2Z has the option of high resolution images now I am very confusing what would be the right option for me. I will appreciate your comments and thanks before hand.

Good review. But I wish if you compared the two drones at the same time. You filmed with the zoom mid-day and with the 2 pro during golden hour. I wish if we could see both drones filming at the same time.
Great vid :). Living in an Area with a lot of prohibited Airspace, I think I'll go for the zoom. Finally: I get that the DJI crowd with more money than sense is so big, it's "logical" to sell 2 versions of the same drone, but seriously, my mid-range cellphone has 3 different 12 MP lenses. ...

Great comparison. You're making total sense to me on this. It's still a bit of a trade off, but I'm glad you brought the post editing aspect into this. That could make or brake your decision here. Darn it, why didn't they just put the two together with the Hasselblad having the zoom also. Probably a marketing decision. At any rate, with all the extra sensors, and everything else. These two drones look like the cat's meow in this genera of drones. Marc Trainor.

I say zoom is the best in the Mavic family. However that is full quality and everything. If you want a really good drone budget wise, go for the mini. The zoom is like 1400 dollars while the mini is 400 dollars. Now the mini does not have as good of a camera. But for the mini’s price, it is a really good deal.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious they made the split so you've got to buy both if you want the best of both. No reason the hasselblad couldn't have been built with zoom.
I agree with you: Too bad DJI didn't make the Hasselblad a zoom lens. It would be nice to have the best of both drones in just one. But maybe DJI would sell less drones, and I think that was what was on the company's mind when they decided to make 2 different drones. Also, one drone with all the good stuff would be a lot more expensive. Perhaps we will see such a drone in a near future. Thanks for this video!

Hey buddy, a question from a total newbie who has never played around with a drone so apology if some of these questions sounds dumb. Im looking to finally educate myself with these machines for my travel videos.
1. I did not see a video screen on the controller. Correct me if I'm wrong but without a screen, you would fly blind right? You need to see what the camera is capturing.
2. Can you use these drones for hand-videos as well like a gopro? Reason why I ask this is because I won't have to carry a drone and a go-pro during my travel..I can just use the drone for both flying and handmade video shots.
3. Are they waterproof?
4. Is it beginner friendly for people like me? Or is there a steep learning curve to fly these stuff?

You know what I noticed today. The mavic 2 didn’t have dual compass, and also didn’t have custom battery discharge settings:(. I love the drone tho, it’s amazing.
I think to fairly compare the cameras, you have to talk about HQ and FOV modes on the Mavic 2 Pro. I want to buy one soon... or should I be waiting for the 3...?
You can swap cameras yourself. Buy a zoom and then buy a pro 2 camera.
