You are totally right, especially for the sharpening. Seriously the settings 0-0-0 in dlog-m is perfect, and we always can just add a bit for sharpening in post. Quick comment on aperture settings between P4P and M2P. Testing both my drones, I found out that P4P had minimum sharpness loss on either end of the aperture scale, but on M2P on f/11 there was a lot of difference compared to f/4 or f/2.8. The sharpest setting for aperture seems to be f/4, on my unit at least. Also, your comment on M2P's log having no sharpness added, is the whole point on this discussion. P4P adds a lot of sharpness by default (on zero sharpness setting) even on its log mode (with fixed 500iso compared to free-to-set iso on Mavic2pro log mode), so many people comparing these two drones, miss this important detail and come to inaccurate conclusions. Nice video and thanks for clarifying some things to the community. PS: not so "quick" comment after all :)
Thanks for your comment. For sure, having a overly digitally sharpened image is not on my wish-list for a drone so the M2P is great for this. Lots of confusion on this subject.
7:51 F5.6 is clearly the sweet spot which is better than wide open or stopped down. I get that after the last few weeks of RUclips camera release drama (Nikon, Canon, DJI etc) it’s easy to just be over it all and say “screw it all, the only thing that matters is composition” which I 99% agree with but of all of the different topics of debate I would still have to suggest ND filters vs shooting F11. Now that the M2P is introducing an adjustable aperture to people who may not be familiar with one, it’s important to know what diffraction is (light ricocheting around the aperture blades before hitting the sensor) as much as white balance, shutter speed etc etc.
Hi Stewart. I made some videos with your settings. I used 4k 10bit d-log m HQ mode,30fps and 1/60shutter WB5500fix. Unfortunately, when I check some footage I have seen lots of noise. And the focus is the only centre? The centre is fine but the left and the right side is very blurring. When I watched second time your video I have seen 2:21 you said the HQ mode has more noise. I believed the HQ mode is of better quality than FOV mode. What do you think? Which is better? I am very said. How can I do less noise? I using the Final Cut Pro X. Have any plugin or any setup is wrong? Please help. Thanks in advance.
Absolutely brilliant Stuart, the M2P issues are very complex at the moment. This certainly provides us with clarity and authority regarding product expectations and practical use of the M2P in its current state of development. Thank you so much.
Thank you for an informative analysis on the settings. you didnt touch on shutter speed. asuming you can control the aperture and iso by using nd filters, what is your ideal shutter speed. i am pal so need 25fps playback. do you use the half rule and then shoot at a 50th/sec? have you compared that to 25th/sec and 100th/sec. would appreciate your feedback.
Hey! Like you say, shutter is best at 1/50th for 25fps but depending on whether there is much movement in the shot it doesn't really matter too much for drone footage. Here are two of our videos on the subject: ruclips.net/video/y6r3pE70KiE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/t30XXBvQAXI/видео.html
Stewart, What focus mode do you use with Mavic 2 pro. Lots of videos out there but not so good. I searched for a focus video but you don't seem to cover it. Please let me know. Tom in NYC
Hey! I use auto focus, but not AFC (continuous). So it will focus when you press record and you can touch the screen to re-focus while filming but it would automatically re-focus at will.
I noticed the flicker while circling around the girl at 5:24 in the video. I have this problem as well. In settings it has an anti flicker option but it wont come on. I'm thinking you need to have the settings a certain way in order to activate that option. I can get it on my P4P.
Great advice as always Stewart ! Sounds like you haven't noticed any less quality in the FOV mode say compared to the Phantom 4 Pro despite the resampling?
Correct, it's all blown up because everyone loves a good conspiracy theory and in the absence of ideas for original content, RUclipsrs tend to copy each other and pass off inherited thoughts as their own so these things get momentum. The M2P image is soft when shooting in DLog-M but it's meant to be and it's a good thing. No filmmaker wants an ugly, digitally sharpened image from a camera.
@@DroneFilmGuide Well, i do agree about content is most important thing etc, but then again why bother then with technology, resolution etc, you probably use best thing what you can buy, right and wan't to get maximum ouf of it? I do have eyes and so far every video i've seen my eyes tells me there better detail definition in let say p4p video and i would say even in original mavic pro. And in this videos, people are saying same as you in most times, so i don't know who is making hype now. It is not over sharpening etc, you could play with setting as much you like in the end, you'll get less details/more blurry video (for stills i think it's ok, but none of you did not bother to make also photo comparing, interestly) in m2p (which i do own, by the way). I challenge you take video with trees or grass and compare them. Just was looking video with footage of stadium with grass in the middle. On m2p just plain, smooth green blotch, on m1p there's clearly grass details of the ground (its not noise!). And another thing you keep forgetting: barrel distortion takes noticeable correction in post (where you end up with something like, i don't know 32mm instead if 28mm fov), which also takes a lot of format area ans also details along with it. Don't get me wrong, m2p is very nice gizmo in compact format, i do like it very much. But it's time to be fair and be honest about it's detail performance in video (i'm not talking about dr etc, which is great but than again, how many people does have 10 bit hardware -gpu, monitors - to work with). it is not hq 4k (which is not full 4k from start) and that's is clearly evident and it's definitely not sampled down video from whole 5k+ original pixel density of sensor. If it was, detail definition in video would knock of all similiar drones in this department (phantoms, original mavic, anafies etc), but it does not. I take a look in dissambled lens m2p assembly, and it is realy crowded there, so i tend to belive theory of overheating problem, if they used same hardware as in p4p, for ex.
Hi! would love if you could help me out... I have a problem... When I try to change the setting in video mode it doesn't let me, it is stuck in auto mode and i have no clue of how to get it back so it lets med change the setting manually! Alseo, i can only chose hlg, not dlog-m...Please help
Peter Fredriksson hey bud, you have to have the drone power on and not just the remote, second you have to change the codec. The remote with your phone attached will tell you what you have to change. I am brand new (2days old) myself, but I hope that this helps.
Interesting you haven't mentioned the 'issues' others have found with the camera, i.e HQ having a higher pixel count than FOV, and the aperture muddying at anything past f5 and the whole line skipping issue. Great review as ever :)
Loved its flying capabilities. ND filters arrived while I was out filming. They are certainly a must as couldn't get the correct settings on the drone for 3/4 of the day. Now I've got them should be sweet. Still need to have a look in the edit suite at my footage to see what it all looks like. Looked nice on the screen:)
As you'll have seen, there's been a lot of discussion on this since and DJI have put out an official response. Personally, as per the video, I can't tell the difference and it certainly doesn't bother me. Cliff points out that he is only addressing the issue of sharpness and on that note, my personal opinion is that digital sharpness is not something to be sought after. Seeing the comparisons in our video of the M2P picture, it is a far superior image in every way to the other drones and the softer image is a good thing. It's easy to add sharpness in post but it's much harder to take out digital sharpness that has been baked onto the image.
Some people reporting (and something I have noticed with my M2P) is about the auto focus, some guys sugesting setting it manually to the infinity stop option. Have you played around with the AF/MF options? Thoughts?
Kiter Miker Not true.. It works with AF - only because some RUclips bois tell something different doesn't mean every drone has bad AF. Mine works and I guess some others do as well
Yeah, I've seen all the videos. I didn't arrive at the same conclusions but let's say they're right, I would argue that it's so nuanced that it's irrelevant. MOV and MP4 are just wrappers for the H.264/265 codec so that shouldn't make any difference. MOV is aimed at Macs and MP4 for PCs.
I've seen it when the gimbal has had pressure on it from grass when sitting on the ground waiting to take off. If it doesn't sort itself out in the air I've had to land, switch off and on again.
Two questions : 1. My Mavic 2 Pro seems to take five (5) minute videos or breaks it into 5 videos even if I have it shooting for the full flight, 25 minutes. 2. How can you get the videos to play in your computer after downloading if you can even get them downloaded ? Great videos Stewart.
Hey! I didn't understand question 2...you can't play them because it's H.265 codec? As for the first question, it's probably because memory cards only support maximum 4gb files. It's to do with the FAT formatting.
@@DroneFilmGuide Hi Stewart. Thanks for the reply. I can download my Mavic video into the windows media player but it can't play the files, you think it's the codec? Any ideas how to change that? I can get the video to RUclips but it's from my phone, not the source.

It can be free or bought outright which suits me.
Hi :) I'm mainly going to use my Macvic 2 pro to take pictures. Would you recommend these setting for pictures too, or are they better for videos than pictures?
Photo settings are somewhat different. Shutter doesn't matter provided it is fast enough to freeze motion (so 1/100th and above for the sake of argument). Best to shoot RAW so you have some flexibility in post if you are at that stage but if not, JPEG.
No such thing as a silly question. If you're shooting RAW then sharpness, contrast and colour doesn't matter. If you're shooting JPEG then I'd say pick settings that are closest to your desired outcome. So grab a colour profile that looks good to you. I'll need to spend some more time with the photo settings specific to the M2P but that's the general idea!
Looks like Glencoe, the old hospital at the top (which I think is a hotel now?). Nice view of the Loch as well, my Gran is buried on one of them, on a good day its a cracking place to fly. Do you have any views on the YT videos circulating about not using the full 1" sensor on the Pro-seems to have kicked up a right stink!
I got that reference to the GH4, i own one myself and i set everything to -5 in order to get a very flat image, i was doing the same with the P4 with setting everything at -3 using CINELIKE-D profile. I enjoy grading with these highly soft images. It's all about personal tastes. Thanks for the great video as always! Happy midweek and happy flying :)
Actually you would shoot 30fps for PAL not 25. However this does not really matters anymore. Beside you produce for broadcasting. Most screens beside high end e.g. gamer displays have a frame rate of 60hz > 60 pictures per second. However what you want for really smooth movements is the 90° shutter angle. Some prefer 180° for sharper pictures... I say this depends on want better matches the story you want to transport. I typically do not want jumpy but razorsharp clips (created by short exposure) I want to have flowing motions in my images (created by longer exposure). If you have 30fps you should try exposure of 1/30, 1/60 and 1/120. Same with 25fps, try 1/25, 1/50, 1/100. Compare and see what style you like most. If you go for 60fps 1/60, 1/120, 1/180. You will notice that high frame rates comes with another problem, less light - so recording at 60 or even 120fps will limit low light capacity.
Nicely done. Other "reviewers" claim max sharpness between f4 and f5.6. No matter what I've shot between 2.8 and 6.3...always looks very sharp. Not sure if diffraction is an issue, but for my mildly tech-y brain it should exist on this camera as it does on my micro 4/3, too. Tech-ier folk than me go ahead and laugh at that statement. I can take it! Please explain what I'm fumbling at here, though. Thanks!
For sure, maybe it's diffraction that knocks it off a bit up at f/11. Mind you, was out taking some slow shutter photos with ND16, 100 ISO, 1/5th shutter and f/11 and the photos were perfectly sharp. These days we keep the aperture between 2.8 and 8ish because, don't get me wrong, we also want the best possible, sharpest picture. But beyond that, we try to focus on our cinematography more than our settings. Cheers!
Great video-great tips as usual...but i really do see a better image from my P4Pro than on the M2P - which does give a great pic but you get the finished article out with a lot QUICKER workflow when using the P4Pro .... and an average pc - sorry :(
Daniel Vieira Yes I am aware of that! - I just say the M2P aint as good with the camera as the P4P - as it takes far more post twiddles and take too long to process in 10bit for no noticeable difference - for a folding drone the P2P is great Not knocking it - Its just the camera gets too much hype!.
Aerial Image Its down to preference but I prefer the more natural looking image I get off my mavic pro 2 as opposed to my P4P. I also find it has better dynamic range and can be pushed more in post. But if you don't want to work on your image in post then shooting 10bit D-log isn't for you.
Thank god a video by someone who knows what they are talking about and not another 10min of bullshit by some idiot bitching about how it uses the sensor, soft image, not as sharp as P4 etc. So refreshing.
The Mavic 2 Pro is great but flawed! It doesn't actually shoot 4k in FOV mode since it appears to line skip. In HQ mode we have better sharpness but more noise since we are not using the full 1 inch sensor. Photo settings are somewhat different. Shutter doesn't matter provided it is fast enough to freeze motion (so 1/100th and above for the sake of argument). Best to shoot RAW so you have some flexibility in post if you are at that stage but if not, JPEG.
Hi again :) Thank you for your reply. I was thinking about the settings for sharpness, contrast and colors. Maybe a silly question?
I'm just interested in the results in all honesty and as you can see in our video, the picture is fantastic!
How do the exp settings compare to the mavic pro? I notice theirs a lower range on the m2p. I still keep exp 20,10,15
Give or take I'd say it's about the same really.
Indeed, it's an old discussion!
Cheers!
Great video-great tips as usual...but i really do see a better image from my P4Pro than on the M2P - which does give a great pic but you get the finished article out with a lot QUICKER workflow when using the P4Pro .... and an average pc - sorry :(
This review is about M2P not P4P, thats the mistake....M2P is the upgrade for M1P, not P4P. Foldable drone vs Full size drone!
I feel 24 or 25 fps are low fps to drone footage unless u fly very very slow….. that low fps always looks stuttering for me
why can’t you use 25 in USA? thanks
i flew today right after taking the trust test...got 4 warnings while i was flying,,,,legaly? wtf??
Thank god a video by someone who knows what they are talking about and not another 10min of bullshit by some idiot bitching about how it uses the sensor, soft image, not as sharp as P4 etc. So refreshing.
Yeah, a lot of bad information going about now about this.
Set the settings to HLG mov sharpness 2 contrast 1 saturation 0 put the files on a iPhone12 and enjoy 10bit HDR without any edit!
Discount link does not work :-(
Hey! That's no good. What's the problem? I've tried them here and it's showing up fine so please do let me know. Cheers.
I'm here to get to know whether to use HLG or not... and there's 3:05, lol.
You need to explain WHY in Europe you shoot in 25fps and in the State in 24fps so people would know and understand.
Tell me more about that amigo?
I use 30 fps in Europe is that not ok? Should i use 25 fps ?
Ntsc 30 fps dude
The Mavic 2 Pro is great but flawed! It doesn't actually shoot 4k in FOV mode since it appears to line skip. In HQ mode we have better sharpness but more noise since we are not using the full 1 inch sensor. If you haven't already seen the truth behind DJIs 1 inch myth check out what this RUclipsr uncovered: ruclips.net/video/EpETzfvbmD0/видео.html lastly, just wanted to say, I love your channel!
just got a mavic pro 2...its a brick.. in my opinion......a technical mess... for sale!??? magnetic interference mu sistas ass....lol
Great helpful video guys!
