18 months on and the best Mavic 2 summary online from someone who actually uses it professionally.
Thanks so much, glad you found it useful
Incredible piece of technology
It certainly is
Great video for someone who is debating pressing the buy now button for a pro 2
thank you.. just received the Mavic 2 pro & found your video very helpful.... Much appreciated.
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video useful. And good luck with the drone, it's an amazing tool
Andy, amazingly good video. Being able to get such quality content on a topic that I am interested in, for free, is just amazing. Thank you for your work!!!
Thanks for the comment Ola, really glad you liked the video
OUTSTANDING! Thank you Andy!!
Thanks for the comment, really glad it was useful
Very helpful, I winced a little at 16:43 thinking of sand in the rear motors!
Thanks, glad it was helpful. As for the sand...I tend to be shooting a lot in quite harsh conditions and my stuff gets battered. This video is almost two years old now, and since then the drones been landed on more sandy beaches, dusty volcanic deserts, snow and mud, and it's still going strong. It's a tougher drone than you think
@@AndyMumford That's very good to know thanks.
New sub. The first RUclipsr that understands what hyperlapse is really supposed to be. ("there were no clouds") So far I'm tired of those videos with cars and people with sped up motion. In my opinion it only should be shown when one wants to demonstrate the process of building something to display the progress.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, it was for this reason that I didn't actually put any hyper lapse footage in the video...I don't really have any that can do it justice. I'll be in the mountains in January though, staying in a hut up amongst the peaks and I've got some ideas for hyperlaspes at sunrise as the light first illuminates the tops of the mountains. Thanks for the sub.
Great review of the Mavic 2 Pro. I think it's perfect drone for me. And thanks for including all you settings. Cheers.
Thanks, glad you found the video useful
Thank you Andy....great info! I have so much to learn and your tutorial was super helpful. As an anal retentive fellow I cringed when you pulled the Mavi and controller out of the sand! 😝
This is like ASMR for drone nerds. And I mean that in the best way possible.
Thanks....I think :-)
Best genuine review I've found, from a real photographer, unlike the many young guys setting up "master classes" claiming to be pro's. They fill their videos with few facts and much nonsense, Andy has done a spectacular job with his opinions and experience which surpasses many wanna be presenters. Well done and thank you. Subscribed!
Thanks so much for watching, really glad you enjoyed the video
Wonderful!!!. Nice and clear, fantastic photos and videos.
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you found it useful
Thanks for this Andy, just got mine today so looking forward to giving it a try, your video was very helpful especially a few of the settings.
Thanks for the comment Steve, enjoy the Magic...it's an amazing thing.
Andy Mumford Great video Andy! I was wondering if you used a corrective lut to correct your dlog m footage? If so which one? Also I can’t find the Panorama photo option in my DJI Go app anymore. What happened where is it?
Great Video Andy- thanks for the great tips and advice on the photography side of the drone. So often its easy to just focus on the MP2 as a video based device. Sending some sub love from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
Wow. You are an amazing filmmaker and photographer. I love your color grading skills and drone pilot skills and all of your camera talents. Just found your channel. Very well done video. I subscribed, hope to see more great videos like this coming!
Thanks so much for the sub Hank, glad you enjoyed the video
Thanks Andy, very informative and calmly explained. If your travels ever get you near our neck of the woods (North Borneo) and you need a free fixer, let me know. We have some stunning photography opportunities here - tropical islands, jungles, mountains, culture, rivers, wildlife - you name it - thanks again
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. Borneo has been on my list for a while, I was in Indonesia a few years ago and would love to go back. For sure if I ever get out there I'll get in touch
This is the best breakdown of the drone i've found on here. well done!
Thanks so much, glad you found it useful
Great info. Thanks! One thing kind of surprised me was seeing your Mavic2 in the sand. Won't ever see me doing that.
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment and glad you liked the video. With the drone in the sand, it was something I did just for the video because I had to use my hands to operate the camera. Rest assured thought it was only there for a couple of seconds and all the sand was blown off when I got home. I've been out shooting this coast for over 15 years so I'm used to dealing with sand on gear.
To be honest though I used the first Mavic in some pretty extreme situations - dusty windy places in Iceland, snow in Norway, and often it's difficult to give gear the proper "love" so it has to be able to deal with a bit of dirt and sand. Most stuff actually can quite well, as long as you don't overdo it and make sure to clean it properly with a blower brush later on.
Top drawer video Andy.
You also have an enviable lack of need to draw breath while talking!
Top flight stuff here Andy! I'm only a serious armature, not a pro, but this sure looks good to me. Very valuable info, as well as enjoyable to watch. I love your videos, and your photography is knocked out, really striking. Marc T.
Thanks so much Marc, glad you enjoyed it
Another great vid, thanks. Could'nt help feel sorry for your drone at the end on the sand though.
Thanks so much...and no need to worry about the drone....they're tougher than you think. I made this video about 18 months ago and since then it's been through all kinds of mud and dirt, and still works great
Absolutely amazing info. Thanks.
Thanks for watching, glad you found it useful
Should add that H.265 is a CPU hungry codec. Not all computers are capable of editing H.265. Try it before you use it for a shot you really need to use.
Great video.
Thanks so much for the comment
Awesome review. Thank you.
As an fyi if your'e shooting in RAW it doesn't matter what white balance you choose.
Thanks, glad you liked it. When I said to sett white balance manually I was referring to video settings because if you leave it on Auto it can change during the clip. For example if the sun passes behind a cloud Auto white balance will try to compensate you can end up with colour shifts in the same clip that are hard to change when editing the video.
Thank you very much sir, very good tutorial
Thanks for the comment, glad you found it useful
that image was in Portugal, gincho beach
Indeed it was. I live in Lisbon
I finally unboxed and updated my mavic 2 pro just now Andy lol.. i have been lazy! Thanks for the insights.
Love your deuter backpack. What model is it?
It's the Freerider Pro 30
Thank you for the great info.
Thanks, glad you liked the video
Perfect! Thank you!
Thanks so much

Thanks but most of us are also interested in the review.
@@bobcloughjr maybe, but a lot of us have seen plenty of reviews.
Thanks so much.
What about the EV when you're shooting?
Great work and video! But my eyes bled when I saw the drone and controller in the sand. Thanks for the tips.
Mine too, eyebrows reached for my hairline
The barrel distortion correction doesn't fix the completely problem, it's still there and sometimes there is absolutely nothing you can do for fixing it entirely and you will definitely face it in most of your shots...
A W E S O M E Channel!!
Good insight. Like you I had the AIR, I still have it for certain uses being os compact, but the Pro2 I have just moved onto - yes 2 years behind everyone else! You mentioned in the video something you had found for taking out the horizon curvature caused by barrel distortion from the lens. I haven't been able to find what you mentioned. Could you iterate it please? Or even put a link here in the comments? Many thanks.
Thanks, it's actually so long since I made this video I honestly can't remember now. Distortion can be removed in Premiere Pro quite easily. You just go to Effects > Distortion and there are various presets, or you can adjust it yourself manually.
I've actually recently switched to the Air 2S which does a much better job with distortion in camera
A really helpful and well presented video Andy. Full of important settings to get things looking good from the start. Thank you for posting. Have you done a colour grading video at all? I use FCPX, or maybe you could recommend someone perhaps? Looking forward to more Mavic 2 pro vids from you.....
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. I haven't actually done a video on colour grading - I still think of myself as learning with video. I use Premiere and basically just grade the footage till I get it how I like it using the whites/blacks/shadows/highlights, saturation and colour temp/tint. I rarely touch any of the other colour controls.
Great job presenting this information, straightforward, nononsense. Really enjoyed it!
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video
Fantastic video! Thanks for putting in all the legwork to make it easier for beginners like me to get started correctly! Just one thing. Isn't that sand that hitchhiked into your bag about the worst thing imaginable for your camera gear? And on that, what is the best way to clean the lens of both the camera and sensors? Thanks again!!
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. As for the sand...I know, I know...It was something I did just for the video because I had to use my hands to operate the camera. Rest assured thought it was only there for a couple of seconds and all the sand was blown off when I got home. I've been out shooting this coast for over 15 years so I'm used to dealing with sand on gear.
So, to answer your question, for cleaning the camera and lens body I use a blower brush and a microfibre cloth. For the glass in the lens, I've found these Zeiss wipes to be absolutely brilliant www.amazon.com/Zeiss-Pre-Moistened-Lens-Cleaning-Wipes/dp/B00GL64QG6/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1543148556&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=zeiss+lens+cleaning+wipes&psc=1 Cleaning the sensor is a tricky one, and it's something I've toyed with making a video about, but it's one of those things that people get very upset about if they see someone doing it differently than them, and I don't want to recommend something and then someone have an accident. There are a number of good solutions, but for all of them you have to be careful and do it in a well lit and dust free (or as dust free as possible) environment. Of all the things I've used, I find the Eyelead gel stick www.amazon.com/Zeiss-Pre-Moistened-Lens-Cleaning-Wipes/dp/B00GL64QG6/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1543148556&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=zeiss+lens+cleaning+wipes&psc=1 Again, you have to use it really lightly and apply very little pressure.
Andy Mumford Thanks for the reply and excellent info! Subscribed!
glad you could visit lago di carezza before the surrounding was destroyed some weeks ago
Yes, I was there a couple of weeks before the storms. My friend lives in the area and sent me some photos of the storm damage, and it's really sad.
Quick question...do you think that the HQ mode has more or less noise than the wider
FOV mode? Thanks!
It's not something I've noticed and from what I understand about how the sensor works the noise levels should be the same in both modes
Andy Mumford Thanks for you thoughts!
Very awesome sir,
Does the cruise control feature already exist in the DJI Mavic 2 PRO?
thx
Glad you enjoyed the review and found it useful I can't answer your questions I sold my Mavic 2 Pro over a year ago when I moved to the Air 2S
Bellissimo video 🔝
Grazie
Excellent Review, I own the Phantom 4 Pro and mostly use it for stills, but size is a problem. I m interested in this drone. Thanks for sharing your point of view.
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it.
portability is key
Andy, great video and really useful settings information. I'm curious how you perform focus on the Mavic 2, both for video and for stills. Would you care to share?
It’s generally touch to focus, As its shooting so wide and with a drone its rare that anything is close to the lens, touch focus will give you front to back sharpness
The absolute best review & helpful setting info. Thanks.
Thanks so much
I upgraded late from my Mavic Pro, so I'm late to the party for this video, but great stuff Andy and thank you for the recommendations on settings. Good grief you talk fast ;-) I can't tell that you ever took a breath :) ... Also I use squarespace and have for years. Can you tell me what your base template is? I really like yours.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. The Squarespace template is Foster, although I've made quite a few changed to the fonts and stuff. Also, instead of using regular pages I used Indexes a lot as it allows you to have a banner that spreads all across the page, and then I stack the banners.
Hi, theres no link in the description for the distortion correction?
Great video Andy. Side note, curious to what bag you’re using at the end of the video? It looks like a Deuter with a rear entry panel....
Hi, glad you liked the video. The bag is a Deuter...it's a Freerider Pro 30 with an F-stop Small Pro ICU inside. There are links to them both in the description. Bags designed for skiing and snowboarding etc often seem to have rear access so you can drop them in the snow. The Osprey Kamber is the same. I have quite a long body and most camera bags I've found aren't all that comfortable...they seem to be designed for people with shorter bodies.
Image quality of the Mavic 2 Pro absolutely destroys the Phantom 4 Pro. I have owned both. Mavic destroys the Phantom in all aspects.
from what I've seen from side to side comparisons the Mavik 2 Pro has a yellow murky tint which looks terrible compared to the much better picture of the phantom 4. Also only 30 fps 4k on the Mavik 2 Pro compared to 60 fps 4k on the phantom and the Phantom looks a bit sharper. I love the portability of the mavik 2 Pro but can you really get that yellow tint off the footage without ruining the natural colors ??.
Awesome Review! Thanks a lot! Do you use ND Filters or ND-Polarizer Filters?
I did on my old Mavic, but I haven't got around to getting any for the Mavic 2. I should get some actually
Hi Andy thanks for this well done video ! One question, my OS 10.12 computer doesn't recognize H.265 videos sadly, what you recommend ?
Hmmm, I don't know really...I guess in that case you have to go with H.264
Andy Mumford thanks ! Yeap I ll wait a bit and get a new computer soon !
Very useful video and information. Thanks for that. My only ask would be to speak a little less fast and make anew pauses. Would then be much easier to follow.
Hi Andy,
I have just purchased the Mavic 2 Pro and been using for dome Field Geology shots. I was using HDR and Panoramic but one day they were not available on my settings anymore, only single shot. I have been looking for answers online and tried pretty much everything on the drone and can not get the settings back.
Could you simply refer me to a video, tutorial, or simply explain to me how to do it?
Much appreciated!
Sorry I can’t help you, I’ve not encountered that issue
Great advice. Still relevant even today. Still a great UAV.
Indeed, there's not much about the M2P which doesn't stand up today
Great video and info :) btw did I see some slightly out of focus clips? Did you use XT2 in Continuous because I have been having similar issues.
Not sure. I’m away at the moment and it’s hard to review the video, but I generally shoot the videos at home with the focus in manual.
Thank you thank you thank you I love your tutorial! Very helpful. After hearing you I will go ahead and order the Mavic two. I’ve been tentative to upgrade since the negative comments about the sensor. But you make perfect sense. Thanks again
Thanks for the comment John, I'm glad you found the video useful. I find negative comments about the Mavic 2 sensor a little surprising to be honest. I think sometimes people seem to expect every product to be amazing at everything for everyone, and see any element that doesn't compare favourably with another product as a failing. For me the reality is that everything is a compromise in some way. A drone like the Inspire or Matrix will give you better image quality but the compromise is in how portable it is. At the other end you've got a tiny drone like the Spark or the Air which are incredibly portable but you compromise on image quality, so the question you need to ask yourself is what areas you're willing to compromise in and how much. The Mavic 2 Pro isn't supposed to replace the P4P, it's supposed to replace the previous Mavic Pro, and in that respect it's a huge improvement.
The sensor is excellent. Shooting in D-LogM I've been amazed at the detail, dynamic range, and lack of noise in the image. The P4P might be slightly better, but would be less useful for me as I'd usually leave it at home due to it's size and how problematic it would be to carry it along with my camera gear, so in that respect the better image quality is irrelevant...what's the point in having something with better image quality if you don't carry it with you?
So have fun with the Mavic 2, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed with it.
Really Helpful Andy - I am a pro landscape photographer but new to the drone (Mavic 2 Pro ) world so really appreciate your input
Thanks for the comment Steve, glad you found the video useful
Hi Andy, what a great review. I don't see the link for the barrel distortion fix from Matt? Thanks
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. Here's the link for the barrel distortion fix thefilmpoets.kartra.com/page/wEn20
@@AndyMumford Thank you, that is great.
hi andy, one quick question, i shoot at H.265 after editing i have option to export at 264 is that okay?
That's fine. It's pretty standard to export in H.265
I just bought this drone...very cool to see the various features used.
Yup, it's a great drone
9:25 is that in guincho/Portugal ?
Yeah, I live in Portugal
Andy Mumford nice! I’m Portuguese, I live near Guincho
Keep these video coming. Excellent resource for information
Thanks so much, glad you enjoy the videos
Dude 😂 you should never, ever put your drone on sand or even launch it, its dangerous for your drone
Haha, it's fine. I made this video almost 3 years ago and since then that drone has been in all kinds of stuff. Sand, volcanic dust in Iceland, snow. I've been a photographer for 15 years and most gear is pretty tough
That worried me too, not so much about the drone but grains of sand ending up inside the backpack and getting into the drone's motors or scratching expensive camera lenses, etc.
were setings ?
Awesome video, Great work. Thanks
Thanks so much for the comment
Great video, many thanks as a novice. Very interested in the back pack you show as I carry a DSLR camera also and want both drone and DSLR in the same carry bag. what name / manufacturer is the back pack? P.S OMG I must visit the dolomites and great plug for Squarespace... Im on it...
Thanks Andy, glad you enjoyed the video. The pack I use in the video is a Deuter Freerider Pro 30 with an F Stop Small Pro ICU for all the gear
Thanks for taking the time to post the video top quality content as always👍
Thanks, glad you liked it.
Thank you, Andy, for such clear and precise instructions on the settings for best video footage with this drone! Some guys recommend Setting the custom style at: +1/-2/-2. But i am going to try your settings. Thanks again!
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us. Love your channel, keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate the comment
Brilliant video, Andy! A great prospective to analyze this absolutely stunning drone. Too much people don't understand that the perfection doesn't exist. What means "the perfect drone"? It makes more sense to think about the most appropriate tool for the purpose. My Gosh, humans! Oh, I almost forgot, I just got the Mavic 2 Pro :) Have a nice one mate!
Thanks man, glad you liked it. And glad you've got your Mavic 2 Pro. I was using it again the other night to shoot some clips for this video and I'm still blown away by how good the image quality is...it's really really nice, you're going to love it :-)
That's a bummer you've had problems with the WiFi on the Mavic Air. 2 weeks ago I was flying out near the mountains here in Cedar City, Utah and view distance was really far and clear. I figured I was about 1.5 miles from the mountains before they inclined. It was a bit windy too. I went pretty far, like I knew I was pushing the limit, so I hurried and turned around and headed back. There were a few small drop outs on the screen but i just made sure to keep the handheld point towards the drone. So I landed her and took out for home. I got to looking at the footage when I got home and I was going through some settings too. I noticed a video clip that said 14,500 feet in distance... I was like... WHAT?! That can't be right can it? I inspected further and sure enough, the drone had traveled almost 3 miles away. It's 2.6 miles. I was like dude! I better pay closer attention. Plus, I don't know how to calculate on the fly feet to miles. But it sure captured some sweet footage.
Think he said Mavic air mate not the Air 2.
I can't believe you put it down in the sand!!!!
Yep, and it continued to work perfectly until I sold it two years later. It’s just a tool for working, it doesn’t need to be babied. If a piece of equipment can stand up to a few second in the sand then it’s not going to last in the places where I’m usually working. Fortunately most gear now is well made and can survive a bit of sand as long as it’s cleaned a little afterwards
That's quite a gift you have ! It's nice to have someone who can deliver useful content while sitting still and not liking the sound of their own voice, thank you! subscribed and I will be back!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video
Great content, thank you for it. I just have a quick question related to the microsd card you are using. I know that for images some cards are just good, but I saw that you did some movies too. Can you tell us each memory card you use and what is your video configuration? Thank you one more time.
Hi Lucio. My Micro SD cards are all Sandisc Ultra (100mb/s). The video configuration I explained in the video. 4K FullFOV, H.265, DLog M and all exposure settings at manual.
@@AndyMumford Thank you one more time. Now I have a good reason to check my drone. I have a M2P and I use a MicroSD Extreme 128Gb (100mb/s) too. On this confirmation I'm experiencing a 5 to 9 seconds of lagging on video transmission flying less than 100 meters away. This just end if I lower the configuration from 4k to 1080p 30fps or less. I just tested 3 microsd cards and the result is the same, unfortunately. Any suggestion that can help me?
Really awesome footage mate! Happy to see someone finally mentioning the original Mavic's over-sharpening and moiré issues. That was the main reason I went for the Air - waiting for my XT-3 now!
Thanks for the comment Titouan, glad you liked the footage. I've had the X-T3 for a few weeks now and it's really good.
Hello! How big memiry can I use in this DJI Mavic 2Pro
Excellent video mate thank you. However, I almost spat my tea out when I saw your drone go from a sandy beach into your camera bag! 😨
Yeah, a couple of people have mentioned that, but in my experience most stuff is built to survive a bit of dry sand. I’ve been photographing on the coast for almost 15 years and using drones for about 3 and never had sand cause a problem. This video was made a year ago and the drone is still functioning like new....this morning I launched it from wet grass in the Dolomites. I don’t baby stuff and I’ve never had a single equipment failure so it’s really no big deal. Glad you liked the video, and thanks for the comment. All the best
Have you ever used the viewing goggles with a mavic drone. I imagine that would be incredible. Obviously not suited to what your doing with regards to landscape footage but as an experience I image it would be fantastic
I haven't actually. It must be awesome.
goggles with drones in general are great :D
Thank you Andy, at last I've found a real-world look at the 2 Pro from a proper photographer - very very useful. I'm wondering if you have time to add anything new now you have had another 6 or 7 months using it?
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. Honestly, no, I don't have anything to add other than that I'm still as impressed with it now as I was back then. The image quality is fantastic for such a small drone
Great video
My question is why my mavic 2 photos always blurry ? What is the best photo setting?
I have no problem with the video quality
Only the photo plz help
Hmmm, I don't find that with the photos. I shoot RAW and keep the aperture around the middle of the range. Then I sharpen in Lightroom
WOW, thank you for your very useful insight. Practical no nonsense advice.
Thanks for watching :-)
Thanks Andy, great video! Quick question. Are you using any particular presets or LUTS for your grading?
Thanks so much. I don't use presets of LUTS for the grading
@@AndyMumford Thanks Andy, where did you learn your grading?
Thank you. What backpack are you using to carry it? Nice! Cheers from Canada!
In this video it's a Deuter Freerider 30l backpack with an F Stop Small Pro ICU for the camera gear
@@AndyMumford . Thanks, thats been my challenge. Finding a backpack for dirtbiking that can carry my drone and crystal sky monitor. Cheers I'll see if I can find it on their website.
I have a question on a backpack, which model of backpack did you use here?
It's a Deuter Freerider Pro 30 with an F Stop ICU Small Pro camera insert.
Thank you for that excellent video Andy
Thanks so much
Great tutorial! You provided quick and relevant information for Mavic’s camera settings.
Thanks so much, glad you found it useful
Wood you share what ND filters you use with this drone?
I generally use Moment of Polar Pro vari NDs
Did you just lay down the Mavic on the sand?
I saw the same thing. Egad... :) Still, fantastic video.
Would like to know where can i get that camera bag on the beach
The bag is a Dueter Freerider Pro 30, and the camera insert is an F Stop ICU Small Pro
Another very useful video Andy. Thank you. I’ve just got the same drone so any more tips and tricks you discover would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Lyndon, glad you liked it
ARE THESE VIDEOS MADE WITH ANY ND FILTER?
Hi Andy, thanks for the womderful videos. I recently bought a Mavic 2 Pro and I'm finding that the colours in my still images are a bit off! The greens and yellows look a bit on the neon side. What settings do you use for still images? Any tips? Was thinking I could maybe create a colour profile for the camera using a Colour Checker Passport? Cheers Keith
Hi andy do you think that the mavic 2 pro is still good in 2023 worth buying
It’s still a great drone, the image quality is as good as the Air 2S, and probably better than the Air 3. It doesn’t have as good battery life or connectivity, but if you’re not sure about whether you’ll get into drones, and you can find one at a decent price, then I reckon its worth it
Dear Andy, finally a great review video without ego. Well done, enjoy your work, look forward to more content from you. All the best. Rowan
Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching
whit video maker you use to merge youre footages? and which codec i need to play on tv?
I use Premiere Pro to edit the footage. H.264 or H.265 are both fine.
Clear concise and not fru fru just how I like it
Thanks
