Drone Landscape Photography Tips and Techniques | DJI Mavic Pro Tutorial

- If you’ve watched my videos before, you’ll know that I love taking landscape images with any camera like my DSLR, mirrorless camera or even my iPhone. But there’s another camera I use for landscape photography that gives me a perspective I can’t easily get with any of my other cameras and that’s my Mavic Pro.

Drones are getting cheaper and more accessible. While I initially bought the Mavic Pro to improve the content I create for this channel, I soon realised the power DJI built into this small package for capturing stills. But in this video, I'm going to take you through how I capture landscape photos using my Mavic Pro.
So out of all the drones available when I bought this, I went with the Mavic Pro, because I think that’s the sweet spot between image quality and portability. As I mentioned before, one of the advantages the drone has over any other camera I have in my hand is I can get this up in the air easily for that unique perspective. This opens up another dimension for telling a story, new angles on a landscape and different compositions.
Speaking of composition, I also have a lot more freedom when positioning the drone and composing my image. I’m not restricted by cliffs, hills or a lack of access because there are no paths.
Before we get going, let’s quickly check the settings to make sure we have the best image quality. I have the image size set to 4:3 for the greatest resolution possible using all of that sensor - this gives me the option to crop a little later if I need to. I always shoot in Manual mode. ISO should be 100 for maximum image quality. I also like to shoot in RAW and DJI provides us with that option under Image Format.
With those settings, we’re are now ready to fly and capture some landscape images!

Great work Andrew. Really appreciate your insight, technical explanations and technique tips. Thanks for sharing your craft.
No worries Gary, thanks for leaving you comment, appreciate the feedback mate!
Thank you for a very informative clear speech upload and of course, the super quality of both video and photographs - stunning.
Thanks Andrew, love your work. Beautiful scenes and photographs.
You are the first person I have ever seen point out the ability to adjust the gimbal roll to straighten a horizon for stills, bravo sir!!! 👍👏
Beautiful images and very well-explained. I like your style... straight forward, calm, no hype! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
What a great episode Andrew and the images were brilliant.
Always loved how you use your drone to maximum effect and have watched the end of your Iceland series a few times as the drone sequence in that was epic. A drone is on my list after I pick up a 16-35mm lens for my new camera.
Thanks for that Jim, glad you enjoy the drone footage. I love flying the Mavic Pro and when editing the footage I still get a buzz out of the perspective and view it provides. Iceland is amazing, I don't think anyone could take a bad landscape shot in that place. Exciting times with a drone on the cards, plus the Mavic Pro 2 evidently isn't too far away! :)

Somehow only just caught up with this. A superb video, beautifully shot. Thank you, Andrew. Hoping to put some of these techniques to use in my drone films.
Awesome vid Andrew, a lot of valuable info. Really enjoy going through the camera settings with the mavic pro, helps a lot.
I find your films so beautifully crafted, and that, together with your intelligent, informative, and passionate presentation, makes then a true ‘must see’ experience.
Wow that's so kind of you to say Andrew. Thank you for share your comment, that really means a lot!
Really nice Andrew! I've been flying a Mavic Pro for almost 2 years, mostly for agriculture use and did not know it shoots RAW. I have never ventured into the camera settings menu. As soon as I saw this video I realized I'm not using all the camera's potential. I can not wait until my next flight so I can start utilizing those features. So glad I saw this video....Thanks.
Really enjoyed this - has opened my eyes to the fact you can use a drone for "proper" landscape photography. Incredibly helpful to show us how you refine your settings as you go.
Great video Andrew with some really helpful tips and insight. A pleasure to watch. You’ve also inspired me to take more drone landscapes. Think I’ll give it a try today. Lovely shots too, that coastline looks like a dream.
Thanks for the video is a great help 👍🏻
I've just discovered your channel, Andrew. I have been keen on photography ever since I was a boy (long time ago!), but only recently I bought a drone and started to use a flying camera. I love the fun of flying and the new perspectives it provides for capturing images. Many thanks for this video - I thoroughly enjoyed it and I plan to watch more of your postings. Best wishes, John.
Thank you Andrew for your time and insights you so generously share. Yes I am new to having this wonderful tool a Mavic Air. Your videos are truly inspiring.
Thanks
Thanks Andrew for another great vlog, your images are excellent as usual.
that Road hitting the coast in that angle is just perfect, great video
At last, a still photographer’s unique best use of a drone. Thank you! ❤️
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Great photos!
I had no idea that a Mavic could take photos this amazing!!! Thanks for making this video
Good 'features' analysis and showing how these features change the final result of capturing the subject at it's best.
Great video Andrew. I have only just received my Mavic Pro and am looking forward to getting out there with it and taking some amazing shots like yours. Thanks for your information on how to use.
You really know stuff and the way you put together this video definitely says a lot about you and your esthetic. It was an honor to watch.
Blew my own socks off with my first AEB HDR picture with no photography experience and only a week of owning my new Mavic. I have no business making pictures that look good enough for a magazine but here we are.
Great vid! deffo incorporate this advise into my growing arsenal.
Your previsualization on the scene that you've taken shows that you've very sharp mind that able to see the beauty of any landscape that many others may not able to see beyond a plain landscape that doesn't have anything to impress at first sight. Some may have the best tools in photography or videography but do not have an eye and mind like yours will be ashamed. I'm ashamed and thank for the eye opening presentation. Bravo!
One of the best, if not the best drone photography video tutorials I've watched. Thank you. 🤙
Awesome video great pics ,was down there a year ago nearly lost my drone was very windy.
You have inspired me to try harder to get pics like yours.
Thanks Harry
Thanks for comment Harry, I had a similar experience near Dunsborough, I was out following whales and then when I turned round to come back, I was fighting the offshore winds...it was a very scary moment! All the best for your next flight, hope you get out there soon, mate!
Hi Andrew, absolutely superb, not only is your photography superlative, but your video's are crammed full of information and so good to watch, you are definitely the best channel on RUclips because you give so much and expect nothing in return so thank you.
Absolutely love your work! Thank you
Thanks for that John, appreciate your kind feedback mate!
Fantastic video Andrew, thanks for sharing your tips on drones, well done mate!
Great video Andrew! My DJI arrived today and I am so excited to take it out in The Lakes. Beautiful photos.
Thanks again for another great video , I have a mavic pro I brought second hand and after seeing you videos I can't wait to get out there and give photography a go rather than just footage for my normal videos .
I’ve had my drone for almost a year and never knew what it could really do until now. Guess I just have to knuckle down and start learning. Thanks.
Thank you for this incredibly helpful video. Your footage is an inspiration!

Nicely Done Andrew! Images look great, just bought my first Drone, Mavic 2 Pro this week, keen to get out there.
Excellent vlog Andrew, loved the images . I need to get myself some spare batteries ☺👏
Great examples of drone photography. I use mine mostly for B-roll, but I'll start taking more photos with it as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Lovely in many aspects of that word...the informative values, the narrative and for once..Music that enhances and doesn't destroy a video!! 10/10..Thank you.
Andrew, I am very new at drone flight and have now caught the fever to learn more about using my drone to catch landscape shots. I have always had that hidden passion for photography. I have found your video very helpful and look forward to learning more from you and your blogs.
Thanks Tim, welcome to the fantastic world of photography. I am so glad you've found my videos helpful. I have plenty more planned for the new year, so stay tuned. If there anything specific you want to learn, let me know, and I try and cover it in a video. Thanks again for sharing your story, cheers! :)
Awesome video thanks! the little tips for dealing with the bright aussie sun are great!
I love your blogs and I particularly enjoyed this one. I have the Mavic pro but use it mainly for video - after this I will use it for stills also. Did not know about the AEB of the system. Thanks for the info
Here in the USA there are so many restricted areas in the use of the drone
Thanks for all tihe tips! Amazing photos. I am in the process of buying my first drone.
Great video Andrew. I've not used my Mavic Pro for still photographs, but think after watching your video I am not using it to its full ability. I'm heading out in about 20 minutes (after my phone charges up) and will give it a go.
As a fellow landscaper photographer, this video is invaluable. thanks so much
Some fantastic shots. It does, as you say, give a whole new perspective.
Thank you Andrew for super tips ! You are the best !
That was awesome, Great advice mate.
Loving this review! Good job
Great tips and awesome photo compositions! Thanks for sharing!
No worries, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the feedback on the images. It's a beautiful location to fly and take photos! :)
My jaw dropped a few times. Thanks for opening my eyes!
Thanks for that Nam, Drones incredible little cameras for landscape images! :)
Thanks for this. Recently got the Mavic 2 Pro I love the still camera. This reinforced what thought with a few extra tips like the gimbal pine. I've never had an issue with that but good to know its adjustable.
Thanks for a great video. Came here via WA Camping's channel and was not disappointed. Will definitely be checking out more of your photography videos.
The areal shot at 14:35 is soooo sharp! Fantastic mate!
Great video. Would love to see more of these drone videos from this channel.
Thanks for your comment, I include drone images occasionally in some of my other videos, but I'll make sure I do so more often! :)
Cracking footage, looks brilliant.
Great insight on your drone footage, thanks!
This was a beautiful video and very informative. I’m super grateful for the info
You're welcome Jermaine. Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Stumbled across this video, what great content. And filmed in god's back yard of WA. Legend.
Thank you for Sharing your skills. I will try this with my drone here in Thailand in a while.
really good tips, thanks for sharing! keep up the good shots!
Thanks very much for that, glad it was helpful! 👍
Fantastic imagery and tips. Beautiful spot too. Best wishes to you Andrew, hope the D850 is still shaping up nicely for you.
Thanks for that, it's an amazing area, with so many landscape opportunities. The D850 is never to far away from my side! :)
Nice video and tips Andrew, just got myself a Mavic Air, I believe the camera settings are going to be the same as the Mavic Pro, so I am looking forward even more now, to getting out and about with my drone. Of to Malta for a few months soon, so looking forward to getting some nice images and video. Thanks again mate.
Wow!!! This channel has a very cool vibe and fab information for every detail. Well done. ( new subby)
Best happiness from nz. 👍🌏👍
Waiting for the book, lol. 😊😊😊
Very thoughtfully as well as tastefully produced. one of the best drone videos ever ! Your work made me want to subscribe to the channel straightaway ! Thanks ever so much !
Fantastic video and timely for me as I practice with my Mavic Air. Thank you
Wonderfull images and tips . I will use your tips and techniques . Thanx
Mate that was awesome, as a local to the Sth West and owner of the same drone I loved every minute of it. I really need to start getting out and getting some shots
Awesome video - you have some helpful tips! 👍🏻
Thanks for that, Andrew. As someone who knew nothing about drones I found it fascinating. I can’t see myself in the market for one yet, but it’s a thought for a different type of photography in the future if the dslr should get too heavy to carry around. Nice to see you’ve a bit more sponsorship.
Excellent tips. Infinite number of vantage points with drones. Battery issues. Can’t always wait as long as you’d like for the light. But wonderful results!
Cheers Ed, with infinite number of vantage points it can be a challenge to decide on the best composition. Alway good to have a few batteries charged and ready to go! 👍
That AEB shot, you got me -new subscriber
Hi buddy! I appreciate your tutorial... there is two things i ´ve learned... first... i can set my camera even it is in the air... second feel the nature, feel the sun, and take your time... really helpfull Bro!
Great videography. I enjoyed the vlog Andrew.
Amazing video, fantastic production quality. Thanks for the help! I'm starting to use drone video footage for my car videos. There is so much to learn! Very exciting and rewarding though. Cheers!
Hey thanks mate, it looks like you picked up the Phantom 4, very nice done. I've always tried to incorporate some drone shots into my videos as it provides more context for the viewer and increases the quality of the video. I've managed to capture a little footage while I'm drive around in my car but it something I'm going to do more of in the future. I think it a great way to share the story of the trip. Good luck with your up coming travels! 👍
@@Andrew_marr Thanks! Yeah, it's such a great new perspective to give viewers. I'm kicking myself for not buying one sooner! I'm two years and 50+ videos into starting my channel. Haha. Oh well, I guess I'll just get out there and keep going! :) Keep doing what you're doing. I've just binged watched a ton of your videos. Really great stuff!
Excellent tips! Congrats.
That was a beautiful video Andrew, well done, one of the best and simplest, and straight to the point. I have the Phantom 3, but I am having a nightmare just keeping the video signal. Even when it's not that far away, I shoot real estate, and lately, it has been just a nightmare. I have searched everywhere on how to fix this.
Thanks very much for your kind comments and feedback. I haven't had an issue with the signal on the Mavic Pro, I hear the signal of the Mavic 2 Pro is even better.
Great video! Just bought my first Mavic Pro and this video helped me a lot! Thanks. :)
Very inspiring video. Has given me some tips for stills using AEB on my M2P in Tassie. Many thanks.
Outstanding video. Great tips. No drone, yet. My next major purchase so this was most timely.
Beautiful video, thank you so much👍
Enjoyed this - using the DJI Mini 3 Pro now!
Thanks for a great video Andrew, this is the first time I've seen the drone used for stills!
That’s funny! I have yet to use mine for filming! :-P
I spent many years shooting stills and just a 'hint' of GoPro footage. Only just ordered my first drone today (Mavic Pro2) so watching loads of RUclips about it of course. You shots are so simply done but thanks to the thought and attention to the details and lighting they come out stunning. I have just subscribed.
what a fantastic video, I totally enjoyed this. I have a mavic pro platinum and you have inspired me take more pics.
Thanks very much, I really enjoy taking stills with the drone and and the unique perspective always blows me away! Thanks for sharing your comment :)
Great video mate and love your pictures keep it up 😍👌
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I still have the Magic Pro and use it often. I will follow some of your suggestions.
Great info on settings here. I enjoy out in the country videos and photography. Thanks!!
Thanks guys, I find flying in country areas a lot easier than the city with our laws in WA!
Brilliant and informative. As a new drone owner this was super informative. Just completed a sunset with my drone
Great video. I don’t have a drone but really enjoy the videos. Thanks for sharing this video!
Amazing man very inspiring might consider doing that
Fantastic tips and footage, well done. Just got drone and intend to take photos and videos
